This is our initiation place for friends that we bring out to our vacation spot. We LOVE the veggie burger. It is by far the best in town. I am partial to the Shepard's Pie as well. We have never had bad service. We have had strange situations where the kitchen runs out of items or is backed up, but the servers always make up for this. They are fantastic. I was also lucky enough to go on a day where Great Lakes Grassroots was on tap. That is a seasonal beer, which I could not find anywhere else in the city. Actually, just this past weekend, I was able to get Loose Cannon (another pretty rare beer in P.C.). I remember the Grassroots only costing a little over $2. I will happily eat here 3 days in a row. read more

The food here was AMAZING. I seriously might make a 2 hour trip once a month to get more. My brother, mother and I had our eyes on it for a few days and finally made it there for dinner. We started with the Scotch eggs...DROOL...the sausage has just the right amount of spicy and overall it was just amazing! For dinner my brother ordered some kind of ultimate burger that he loved. It was a bit over cooked....but he loved it so much other than a quick observation he really didnt notice. I ordered the bangers and mash which was wonderful! The sausage wasn't as spicy as the scotch eggs and went perfectly with the sauerkraut. Mash is great...just needed salt and butter...which was brought with it so I could add to taste...which was appreciated. And the best for last....the ruben boxty that my mother ordered....holy magical morsel in my mouth!!! I could have a love affair with this dish. I wanted to order 5 more to take home with me to eat the next few days straight....I could not take my fork away from her plate. I wouldn't let her eat it all just so I could take some home and slowly eat it for a late night snack. Everything was just amazing together....honestly I think it was the best thing I've ever eaten! Over all our experience was fantastic....even when our server couldn't be found another server came and checked on us....I'm sure our server just got caught up doing something and asked someone to look after us. Which as a bartender...I understand. He was very helpful with menu suggestions and very sweet. Even the hosts had a great attitude when we came in. Prices were fair for food quality...and obviously the food was amazing. I simply can't wait to get back there....or maybe I can ask nicely and they can move closer to me ;-) read more

Was in town for a JROTC airsoft competition. Everyone loved the shepard's pie boxty and stew boxty so much that we ate there every day during our visit. My nephew still talks about it 9 months later. read more

Bump to recommend their draft beer selection, which included Kentucky Ale (not the bourbon barrel, which was actually impressive because that's the only one you ever see) and a rotating Catawba Island offering. Standard Irish choices fill the other slots and the prices were great. Need a decent vegetarian option. Badly. Come on. Recommended for a beer and appetizers. read more

Stopped for dinner on Thursday 10 July with 5 friends. One friend and I ordered the Walleye basket - his with homemade potato chips and mine with fries. My friend eats a fair amount of Walleye as that was the quarry for this particular visit to Port Clinton. He said this was the best Walleye he had eaten, and I easy agreed as the fish was battered and fried to perfection. Accompanied by a Guinness on draft and made for a great meal. read more

Decent little place. Stopped by there on our way home from Erie Islands Resort. It was around 3pm, and it was half full but service was very fast. Menu was interesting - boxtys sounded neat as they are Irish potato pancakes with different toppings. The one with maple syrup, bacon and butter was very tempting, but the low carber in me won out and I ordered the corned beef and cabbage, with mashed potatoes quickly passed on to the boyfriend. He also had the house chips, and corned beef potato skins. Potato feast, which is fitting for an Irish pub. Corned beef was a bit salty, but pretty good. Standard cabbage, great potato chips and interesting take on skins. Wholly decent meal for a decent price. I would go back if back in town again! That's high enough praise, right? read more

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food was delicious! My boyfriend & I stopped in for lunch and we started with sauerkraut balls and they were yummy and for lunch we both had the perch I had the wrap and he had the sandwich which again yummy! We had dinner recently at mcarthys restaurant in port clinton for the first time. We were so impressed and delighted that we made an account just to add our review to the others on yelp. First, the greeter was such a sweetheart! She was very polite and pleasant! The place was clean and inviting. We were seated and within a few minutes our waiter Larry introduced himself. And even though he was obviously busy he took his time with us, never rushed, and made us feel like we were his only customers. He went over the bar menu with us answering our questions patiently. He was very knowledgeable and suggested beers that we both loved! He also has a great sense of humor! I asked what Leprechaun potato soup was and he said it was made with fresh leprechauns when they are in season. It was so unexpectedly funny! He assured us no leprechauns were actually hurt in the making of the soup. In just the short amount of time we interacted, he made us feel comfortable and welcome. It's refreshing to watch someone enjoy their job so much. I ordered the perch sandwich and my husband tried a boxty. It was incredible! The kids both had burgers and loved them. And I still cant say enough good things about the service. Our waiter was attentive, checking on us periodically. When it was time to box up our leftovers he brought an extra tartar sauce for me to take home. He must have noticed that I had used mine up and gave me one to take home. It was a very thoughtful thing to do without asking. He was on top of everything, making our first visit absolutely exceptional! I live in the Chicago burbs and was in Port Clinton on business. this restaurant was an easy walk from my Airbnb. Very popular Port Clinton restaurant and there was a waiting list when I arrived Friday at 6:00. I had the perch dinner which was god but honestly the perch down the street at Jolly Rogers is better. However this is a full service restaurant, Jolly Rogers is not. If I can I will return. Excellent staff service at McCarthys and they work very hard. read more

I really can't complain. The menu had a lot of good-looking stuff on it. I went for the reuben sandwich. The sandwich was thick with the ingredients I came to expect. The corned beef was the tender kind that crumbled apart, which is a good thing. I've ordered Irish corned beef before where restaurants try to serve the deli meat kind. It was also served with a side of kettle potato chips that were delicious and crunchy. My 4-year-olds ordered sliders off the kids' menu. They each received 2 sliders and the boys chowed down. The beer menu include all of the staples one would expect from an Irish pub. read more

Excellent Boxties(potato pancakes), which were served with hummus as well as ruebens. They had a large variety of vegan and gluten free food which was fabulous! Also had a great variety of draught beers from local breweries, great place highly recommend. We sat in the dining side with our young kiddos but there was also a pub side. read more

Not bad. I don't want to be stereotypical but the best food I've had here are the potatoes. Homemade chips and dip excellent. Perch basket pretty good. Beer selection good. Service friendly and decent. Feels like a family run place and I like that. I also like that instead of a sign that says "restrooms", they have a big arrow with the word "toilets" on it. Meh. I ordered the fish and chips. Usually when you order fish and chips you get thick cut french fries. They send out chips as in potato chips. The fish was okay. The rueben sandwich that my friend got looked pretty good . The problem is is that it was hotter than Hades in there. Waited over 2 hours to even get seated because the person up front told us "he didn't know" when we could be seated. I get that it's a busy weekend but to not even hear about when we could sit down and at least order was very unprofessional. Also, never received a text message about getting seated even though I had a 4-person party. You can't clear 4 seats ? Maybe go to a place that can give you an approximate time to be seated if you're going on a busy weekend. read more

I'm sorry that this is not accompanied with a picture but trust me the food is very good and surprisingly filling even though I could have went for a bit more corned beef...the Reuben was hands down one of the tops I've ever had . A good local spot in a very quiet area between Cleveland and Toledo worth the visit whenever you come this way!! read more

Was in town from Alabama with a group of kids and parents shooting at camp Perry and had a great lunch experience at McCarthy's. Food was delicious and service from Niki was spot on perfect! Various items ordered; fish and chips (good and plentiful), Ruben sandwich, Shepherds pie, and the best tasting Ruben meatloaf! I personally had the fish and chips which was really good and more chips than I could ever eat but a dad in the group got the Ruben meatloaf.....Oh my!! Had a small sample and was totally hooked! Such a great combination of flavors. The plate also had mashed potatoes and a side of green beans and carrots....for a little healthy! Port Clinton overall is a great area and my experience at McCarthy's definitely means whenever we're in town we'll be stopping by. read more

Horrible food horrible service! Waitress had no clue how to answer questions about the menu. Took forever to get food. The food was freezing when we got it. Our party of 7 was seated for Saturday (8/15) dinner after a 20 minute wait. Our server was attentive and took our drink & food order within a few minutes of being seated. She returned about 15 minutes later to inform us, that because of our large party, our food would take an hour to prepare. We were surprised that 7 diners was considered a "large" party and that despite their reduction in seating by at least 35% it would take so long for our food to arrive. We have eaten here for 10+ years when we come for vacation and have found the food very good so we decided to wait. Unfortunately our food did not arrive for 75 minutes. While we watched at least 5-6 parties of 2 to 4 diners come in and be served their food and leave. Our server had no real explanation why these diners could be served in a manor of minutes while we sat and watch them eat. The food was just ok when it finally arrived. Met a few gfs here for a GNO dinner and drinks. Was pleasantly surprised by all the choices on the menu. Everyone's food was good. I had a salad with blackened salmon. Others had the Guinness beef stew, Sheppard's pie. Wish the had a martini menu or special martini of the day, would have made it easier on bartender and me! read more

I went here on a Friday night and was excited to hear that they had an all you can eat fish special. I started with ordering an Old Fashioned". It was terrible and tasted like it had no alcohol at all. After refusing it we went on to order. The fish will be good, right? No such luck. The fish was way over cooked. The atmosphere was typical..in a good way. They were one of the most visible places in port Clinton. The service wasn't bad, not warm and friendly but things got done. Cajun wings recipe isn't anything special but they hit the spot. I had steak and perch and it's worth mentioning that while the perch was decent, the steak was bland and undesirable. My wife got a breaded veal special and it tasted fantastic. Best I can tell this is a hit or miss place. The menu was kinda large if I remember right, so it may explain why. Food was decent and drinks were okay. Service ruined it for us. We sat down only to be instructed that "the kitchens closed" before any initial greeting whatsoever. I point out the part of the menu that says the kitchen serves fried food until 1:00 am. The waitress begrudgingly admits that only SOME of those selections are available and that's what she meant by the kitchen is closed. Despite her poor attitude, we get our food which isn't too bad. Nothing spectacular but it was fresh and warm. The waitress didn't come back to check on us. She seemed pretty annoyed that we even existed and dared to come into the restaurant. Was in town for the weekend for a friend's wedding. A big group of us went here based on local recommendation. I had the Irish beef stew on mashed potatoes and it was amazing! I wish I could've finished the whole entire bowl because it was so good, but if I had I definitely would've made myself sick. The service was decent considering it was St. Patty's Day. The waiter forgot a couple of things, but he apologized profusely. An overall great experience and would definitely return if we are ever in the area again. read more

While I enjoy the place it does have some deficiencies 1) a small draft beer selection 2) Service was a bit slow 3) They close at 10 on week nights with the pub atmosphere I was surprised that at least the bar part did not stay open later read more

This place has so much potential but it really fell short. We showed up when they opened this watch the Mexico vs Germany game. No one was at the front to greet us, and we waited for a few minutes with another family. My husband had to call to get someone to come out and seat us. Finally when we sat down they brought out our drinks and we waited about 10 minutes before someone came back out. THERE WERE ONLY TWO TABLES TO SERVE AND TWO SERVERS AND NO ONE CAME OUT FOR 10 MINUTES?! Finally they came out and took our order. The food was actually really good !! And our server was soooo nice! But service took so long. We saw 4 groups leave because they weren't being helped at all and the only reason we stayed was because the game had already started. The only reason I gave two stars was because the food is good and our server was really nice but that's it. Service was awful and that is really unfortunate because as I mentioned before , they really have potential to be a great place to dine at, and have a good time. read more

Stopped by on the way thru town, it was our first time there. We had the cheese curds, side salad, a wrap and a bacon cheddar burger. Being a burger snob (as I always order one and usually end up disappointed) the burger was great! Salad was huge and the wrap was more than expected in size and quality. Cheese curds were pricey just looking at the menu but again they were good and a great portion for the money. Everything came out the way it should have from the kitchen and no complaints there. The place was clean, a bit loud as you'd expect from an Irish pub but not crazy enough that I wouldn't take my 4 year old back to. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in town! Note: I would have given it 5 stars if it was a little quicker on the service, I don't know if they were just extremely busy, short staffed, both of the previous or they're just like this normally. At this point I won't know until we visit again. read more
