Used them when my car was rear ended, at the request of the other driver's insurance company. My car was extremely clean and detailed when done, but the bumper isn't aligned right and I had to fix the taillight (they failed to put in 2 screws needed to secure the light). Last week my wife took in our other car after she grazed our garage. They told her the rear passenger door needed to be replaced and quoted $2600. Went to another body shop who quoted $1600 and said the door did not need to be replaced. Insurance company appraisal was also $1600. I would strongly recommend getting a 2nd quote before using them. read more

I've been taking my cars to McCormick Auto Care for over ten years. This is a top-notch organization. The people who work here are friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and honest. I have never had a bad experience with these folks. Sure, as with any auto repair, there's never a good time for your car to break down or a warning light to come on, but these things happen. McCormick Auto Care will take care of your vehicle's problem and do it for much less than your dealership would charge. They also don't try to up-sell you or pitch services that are not necessary. Their garage bays are always full. This shop is constantly busy for a reason! That being said, you'll always get top-notch service and great advice. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

I discovered a screw stuck in one of my car's tires late on a Saturday evening. I quickly discovered that that's the worst time to come down with an urgent car repair need. No repair shops around me were open, so I tried to find a place with Sunday hours. A few minutes of searching on Yelp led me to McCormick Auto. I left a voicemail for them, and they promptly returned the call on Sunday morning, telling me to bring it on in. I got there around 9:30 on Sunday morning, and the place was jumping! Lots of employees, customers, and cars coming in and out. The fella who helped me could not have been nicer, even with the overflow of business. One or two cars were ahead of me in line. After an hour wait, he handed me the screw (a memento which I requested and which I will cherish, certainly - haha) and gave me a heads up about over-inflation of my tires. Very cool. The final bill was very, VERY reasonable, especially considering they squeezed me in with little notice on a Sunday morning. I highly recommend this place. read more

Awesome. Honest, fast, really, really good service. I came to them for a second opinion after getting a ridiculous list of issues (with accompanying ridiculous price quote) from the Subaru dealership in Skokie. Larry looked at the list, said he would do a complete once-over of the car, and gave me an estimate that was $6,000 less than what Subaru told me. He helped explain what the issues were, what Subaru was telling me, what tests would determine what work my car would actually need, and which issues should be done very soon and which could wait a little while. He actually seemed angry at Subaru for screwing around with me, which was also nice to hear. I will never go anywhere else with my car. read more

I stopped by on a whim because an error light had turned on that day, which I was pretty sure meant I was low on tire pressure, but, sadly, I don't know how to inflate my own tires (don't judge me! Relatively new to car ownership!). They were able to take a look at it while I waited and inflated all of my tires for me, no charge. Wonderful! Their good reputation is deserved. Though I had a somewhat frustrating experience, they earned my loyalty. I had a brake issue that they diagnosed and fixed at a fair (though expensive) price. Over the next several weeks, a new problem cropped up-- an intermittent creaking from the brakes-- which I suspected was the result of the earlier work. They diagnosed it as being unrelated, attempted a fix, and charged me a reasonable shop rate for their time. However, the problem continued, and I brought the car back the next day. When I got it back, they informed me that in an attempt to identify the source of the noise, Larry had driven it home overnight. We're talking about an old, uncomfortable car, so this was no joyride. It was clear that he and others had spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what was wrong. And they didn't charge me a penny. As of now, the problem does seem fixed. But more to the point, they showed they're an honest operation and that they stand by their work. I plan to return and recommend them to others. read more

My opinion of McCormick is less than stellar. I started going to McCormick on the recommendation of friends, family and AAA. My recommenders swear by the service at McCormick, however in the past year, I have had two major repairs done by them (clutch and timing belt service @ 105k), both of which failed on me within 10,000 miles after the repair was done (done right, given that my car is well maintained and in otherwise good working order and I tend to drive like a grandma, these repairs should have lasted minimum 6x that). I've also had them start work on my car without contacting me and asking me if that's what I wanted. Another thing that potential customers should know is that unless you ask, the techs at McCormick do not present various options for repairing your car. In my experience, they are a 'locate the problem and replace the part as recommended by the dealer' type of place. They have never offered me a preference in which type of parts I would like (the quality of parts available in the US varies drastically). I have reason to believe that my two major repair failures by them were a result of simply going by the book and not bothering to check surrounding parts/problems related to the repair that may have caused the need for the repair in the first place. In general they are open and helpful if you ask the right questions. They will give you answers if you know what to ask, but they do not offer any explanation or options up front. They also completely stripped the threads on many of the bolts they had to deal with for the clutch job, which is uncool and ultimately unsafe. In a nutshell, their work is costing me an arm and a leg in time and money to re-do it right this time. I won't condemn them completely, as a number of friends and family who have been going to them for years have had great success. Perhaps they just don't do so well with my make of car, but I won't be going back there. read more

They have so much experience between them so are able to really explain the details of a problem. They have on more than one occasion explained what other shops are trying sell us to let us know how this may lead to unreasonable charges. This place is great, they're always very helpful and have never done unneeded work. My wife has gone in and had a headlight replaced in a few minutes (she called ahead to make sure they could squeeze her in), because on her car you have go in behind the wheel well and its hard to get to. I came in with a sensor light on, in my 98 nissan, which they diagnosed and fixed the same day so my car could pass the emissions test). Another time they fixed my AC. Another time they fixed the starter on my engine cuz I kept having to get a jump (battery was fine, had that checked at auto zone). I'm really glad to have found them because otherwise I dunno what I'd do. read more

***UPDATE AND RESPONSE TO MCCORMICK AUTO'S 3/3/2015 COMMENTS*** I was customer of McCormick Auto Care for nearly 10 years and spent literally thousands of dollars on repairs, so nothing in my review is fabricated. The rubicon for me occurred when I received what I suspected, and later confirmed, as an exorbitant price quote for a repair that another mechanic did for less than half of McCormick's quoted price. After I decided to leave this shop for good, I reviewed my previous invoices (yes I kept them all) and noticed that this shop never indicates the actual number of labor hours on the final invoice, nor do they display their labor rate per hour. I also noted that they charged me for a part that I bought and provided. For that particular project, all I wanted them do do was install the part. Ultimately, that oversight is my fault, as I should have paid more attention. Nevertheless, the charge for that part should NOT have been included in the final bill. That's why if you are a current customer of McCormick Auto Care, I strongly advise you to carefully review your invoice before paying. Another instance of shoddy repairs occurred when I had McCormick Auto Care do a radiator flush. About two weeks later, my radiator overheated and I eventually needed to have a new radiator installed. Prior to that flush, the radiator never gave me any problems. And one more thing: that Chicago Magazine top ranking this shop brags about occurred in 2007. read more

This place is a rip off. Save your money. I went here 2 years ago to about a noise that my car was making. They charged me $800 to fix the issue for the same issue I needed to get done again just a few days ago just to find out the part only cost $72 and only takes an hour or two to get done. I paid $155 for the total with the new mechanic I go to now. When I talked to the mechanic they told me that they never even replaced the part and this whole time I was driving in with loose wheels. If I would've gotten into a car accident because my wheels came off these people are to blame. It makes me sick that they would try to rip me off and not really fix the issue! Money hungry pple! We'd been taking our car to a certain nearby dealership and they were always trying to upsell, so I ended up not believing them even when I really did need something... After driving my car across country it developed a vibration, which I thought to be a tire weight off. I first took it to Goodyear where I was told that all my tires were out of round, "the belts were separating from the sidewalls" and oh yes, I needed new shocks & struts too. Even I who know little about cars knew all those things could not be true, especially as I'd had the car checked before the drive. I took it to McCormick (AAA recommended:-) where they gave me an accurate, honest opinion (tire weight was off), fit me into a busy day, and a reasonable price on the work done. read more

Check engine light was on. by recommendation took it to this place and after being looked at I was given an estimate that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced for excess of $1200.00. It's never fun to have to drop a wad of cash to get the car fixed. But it's an easier blow when the business is honest and does good work. A "check engine" light appeared two days ago and I took the car to a local auto repair shop. Ugh, utter highway robbery over there. I felt something was very wrong in my gut and I am by no means an auto mechanic. I emailed McCormick with the list of what I "needed" per the other shop. I promptly got a quote back that was substantially lower than what the others were going to charge me. I took it to McCormick and told them what my budget would allow and Larry told me to let go of the maintenance items and go for what was imperative. I appreciated his honesty and took the recommendation and proceeded. I was able to get the car today and am very happy to have the car fixed knowing that the real issues were addressed and that I have a 6 month window of guarantee time. *The kicker is that one of the items listed from the dishonest shop was unable to be quoted by them because it was going to take so much labor time to replace the back license plate bulbs because the screws were "so stripped and rusted"..... At McCormick, it was never mentioned and seemed rather effortless. The bulbs cost $3/pc. Hmmm...... read more

I had my brakes repaired here 2 weeks ago. Last week I began hearing a scraping sound when braking and this past Sunday while braking at a stop sign, my car abruptly stopped. The engine was still on but I could not move forward. I had to first reverse then proceed. It happened every time I had to stop at a light or stop sign. Very dangerous situation with cars behind me as my car is inadvertently doing a hard stop that I could not control (not to mention my kids were in the car). I had the car towed to McCormick the next day. I had to call and ask what the problem was. They said the bolts were old and not put on tight. What disgraced me was that they were very nonchalant about it and I received no apology for the subpar work and my inconvenience. I told my friend who is a mechanic and the tow truck driver about what was going on with my car and both said the brakes were not done properly. It was clearly McCormick Auto Care's fault and not getting an apology/admission of fault loses this customer of 2 years. Hopefully the fix was properly done - time will tell. read more

I can't say enough good things about Jeff and the entire staff at McCormick. I have been going there for many years, and they are consistently efficient, effective, HONEST and TRUSTWORTHY. As a woman, there are not that many car repair places where you can feel confident that you are not being treated as a easy mark and someone who can be ripped off. That is NEVER the case at McCormick. Today I picked up my car from the body shop where I had collision work done after a car accident. I also needed mechanical work done as my car had recently failed the state emissions test. The body work was beautifully done, and when I looked inside the car , it was spotless and looked brand new- they did a complete interior cleaning and detailing, AT NO CHARGE. Then, Jeff mentioned that my car had passed the emissions test. How did he know this? Because he had one of his employees take my car over to the nearby testing facility earlier in the day to get the test done and the paperwork taken care of. I had not asked or expected this to happen. They just did it, again , at no charge, just to be helpful. They saved me time and hassle, and delivered my car in much better condition than I ever expected. These are people you will enjoy doing business with, because they treat you fairly, and they exceed expectations on many occasions. read more

Rip off joint. Brought in car with broken wiper arm bushing linkage. Had had the same part replaced before elsewhere for 1 hour labor and $25.00 part. However, the first shop didn't set the arm in the right place when they put the assembly back together, so a month later it got caught on the left windshield frame and popped out of joint. Took it to McCormick because they were open on a Sunday. Told them exactly what happened, but they didn't believe that that was how it broke. Left it with them overnight and said that I had to get up to Lake Geneva WI, but ended up just staying at my girlfriend's apt 3 miles from the shop. Next morning, they told me that the part that the other shop had replaced couldn't be ordered by itself and that they'd have to order a whole assembly for $370 and it would take 3 days. A quick internet search proved that this was a lie, so I told them that since it wasn't raining, I'd just come get the car. Larry told me, "Where are you? It's raining here." I was 3 miles away and it hadn't rained a drop all day. He was trying to get me to leave the car there for repair. I picked it up, ordered the part he said he couldn't get by itself, replaced it, and it works fine. Don't trust them. read more

I have gone here twice now. I was very upset with both experiences. They wouldn't take the time to explain the problem to me -I don't know if it is because I am a single, petite, Asian female or not, but- I asked about various issues the guy Jeff said he didn't see any note about issues and that the car was okay. The first time after I left, my car made a squealing sound and started to drag to one side when driving, which it didn't do before I went there. I complained and he said thatI should drive it for a while and if I had a problem come back. I ended up taking the car to another place in Wilmette because people had recommended that place. This time I brought the car in and said specifically that Duxler's when they did my oil change had said I needed my brakes and transmission solenoid replaced and wanted to charge me $1400 for it. The guy said ok we will do a safety inspection. I asked how much it would cost and he said we'll do it for free. I went in to pick up the car and the guy had nothing to say about the brakes or transmission except to say they checked the tires, the oil, the brakes, transmission fluid, and lights and it was ok. I asked, so what about the transmission solenoid and he said, I don't know it isn't written on here, but it's probably okay. when I tried to ask more he said, that there were no notes written down so he didn't know. Then he said this would cost me $65. I am so upset that I neither got any information about the car and that it wasn't free the way he said earlier. I am also really upset at how I got brushed off when i asked. I will never go here again. read more
