This was our first time at McCreary's and it was fairly busy, always a good sign. We stopped after church 'cause my husband was craving a Rueben. He said this was a really good one. He was disappointed in one good sized piece of fat in the sandwich but otherwise he enjoyed it along with some great hot fries. I ordered the half sandwich/salad combo which was very good. The lemon vinaigrette was a nice touch. The ham and cheese sandwich was tasty, and I did have to pick out a couple of tiny pieces of fat that I was unable to chew. I ordered the Dublin pot pie....the flavor was 10/10 delicious, but it was less than half filled, and the bowl was small. As someone who normally always takes home leftovers, I was left hungry after this meal. It felt like a trick to cover the pot pie in a puff pastry yet barely have any protein contents inside. I was so bummed! And the Irish crème cheesecake barely tasted like Irish crème - it tasted like a subpar cheesecake. Maybe it was just an off night, but it felt like a letdown. I had fish & chips and the battered fish was not greasy at all and the homemade sauce was very tasty, My wife had the Sligo whiskey salmon and she kept saying how delicious it is . So the first time I came here when they opened I got a Rueben and it was really anemic. Like one piece of corned beef. It was disappointing enough that I just came back and this time was worse. I came in because my little girl wanted soup so I decided to try the fish and chips. The fries were whatever, but the fish was really bad. Like mush. It tasted like something you would buy at Walmart and air fry. I took 2 bites and felt sick. I let my waiter know. No one said anything to me. The only thing he said was "it's a 3% charge for credit cards". Nothing removed from my bill no apology nothing. This place has a good pint but so do a lot of places. The table next to us order a shrimp dish which I ended up ordering too. My wife ordered the soup, salad and a hot beer cheese potato. For a starter, we ordered the pork bangers and mash. The pork banger with horseradish sauce was a pleasant surprise for me. The shrimp was excellent along with the, white chicken chili. The salad tasted good but the portion was fairly small. We finished our meal with an ordinary slice of Irish cream cheesecake. We ran into problems when it came to the beer cheese potato. It was dry and the beer cheese was lacking. When we asked for some beer cheese to go with our uneaten potato, we were told it was an up charge of $2... the portion presented for the $2 up charge was amusing. (We were not told it was for 2 ounces.) When the manager came to the table she said the $2 up charge was because they use 2 different beers. She corrected me when I said it was an oz of beer cheese. In the end she gave us a 2nd "serving" of beer cheese for free.. Hmm you be the judge. (If you look at the 2 oz cup I was given, you can see how little cheese was inside. I am usually a very reasonable person and will put up with a lot before complaint and always try to give a business the benefit of the doubt BUT in this case, the service truly is horrible!!! All the staff that helped us were more involved in their side conversations instead of doing their job! When our server, David Y, took our order, he was interrupted by the bar tender with a question, I mean come on guys, that's so rude and unprofessional! Our food came and they gave me the wrong item, told me they wouldn't charge us for it and then still did just because I said "it's ok" originally. You should keep your word! Since McCreary's has opened they have improved to one of the better service, food, and live music venues in Columbia. Homemade cured corned beef and Irish pub traditional foods, Guinness, Harps, and fish offerings are tasty and avoid the frozen GFS treatment with the exception of the fish and chips. I thought it was expected to get a fresh homemade recipe for fish n chips when I go to an Irish Pub. it was just from frozen to fryer, and it wasn't hot, but warm. The housemade tarter sauce was really good. The steak fries were exciting to see until I tasted them and they were not hot, warm as if the basket had been sitting on the line for some time.
