Was not impressed with neither the fish and chips nor oysters. This was by far not the best fish and chips I have ever had,and this restaurant did not live up to its hype. There were four of us who went to lunch on our visit to Galway, and none of us were remotely satisfied with our food. They keep their fish under warmers like McDonalds...my fish tasted like rubber! I still can't quite get over the value. We bought a ridiculous assortment of fish (FYI- Mackerel-not my fave- too... strong?) and chip combos plus homemade tarter sauce ( you MUST order this, even if you hate tarter sauce.), curry, mushy peas and paid only 30 Euro. We went next door and picked up a couple of pints, and enjoyed the feast on the patio, soaking up the excellent people watching on Quay St. We went back for oysters. Equally as delicious! read more

McDonagh's has good fish 'n chips. The fish is fresh and I would recommend getting curry with your chips. The portions are probably too large for the average person. This is a great place in Galway for fish and chips. There are two parts to the establishment. On the left, you can place orders up front for either quick eats there or take-away. On the right, it's split off for full-service dining. The staff is very efficient and friendly. We ordered for take-away. It was very convenient because we found that aside from fast food like McDonald's, not many restaurants in Ireland offer take out. Anyways, we ordered the plaice and cod fried fish with chips (tasty!), the chicken pie, the chowder, the fish pie and a ton of sides. The mushy peas were not great in appearance but exceptionally delicious. The chips (french fries) were sooo good! Onion rings were also very good. The portions were huge. Based on the earlier reviews, it seems McDonagh's is THE place to get the best fish and chips in Galway. My boss rates them as the best he's ever had, but then he's from the middle of America... However it was my first night in Galway and I was roaming the Latin Quarter looking for a small and light bite. Most of the other places looked great but heavier than I wanted and then I saw McDonagh's and though a simple piece of grilled fish might work. It took me a while to work out that there are two sides - the left is a simple fish and chips only menu and the casual side whereas the right side includes table service and a more upmarket (and expensive) menu. I felt like a more casual meal but unfortunately all of the fish on the left side comes battered so right side it was for me. They had an excellent 20 euro special where you could get two courses but that didn't really meet my 'light' requirement. The rest of the meals sounded nice although again, a bit more than I wanted. Eventually I settled on a starter portion of the mussels (6.45) and a side of vegetables (3.00). The mussels were a large portion of 20ish mussels cooked in a coconut and lemongrass broth, which I though was a bit odd for an Irish place but hey, why not? The mussels were all quite tiny in comparison to the ones I was used to in Australia but they were super tasty and I thought it was a pretty reasonable price for the size. My side of veges included a mix of mashed carrot and potato, peas and a few pieces of broccoli. My meal was an odd combination and I wasn't feeling like a drink so although I really enjoyed my meal, I don't think it's what McDonagh's is really best known for! I saw some of the other meals from the restaurant side and they were pretty generous looking too. Decor of the place is very in theme with some amazing ceiling decorations. One of the best fish and chips I had while in Ireland. Difficult to find seating if you have a group of people. The weather was nice though, so we got it to-go and ate down by the water, which is right by the restaurant. Good food, and great if you're looking for something quicker. Place was full so ended up on the restaurant side. Had the fish & chips that came with mashed peas and the Monkfish with wild mushroom risotto. Risotto was delicious with everything else being just okay. Supposedly the restaurant side of the fish & chips is more expensive as there is a larger portion. Great fish and chips! We were a little confused when we walked in because there's a fast food side to the left, and a sit-down restaurant to the right. Prices are much more affordable if you order at the counter and seat yourself at a table! I highly recommend the chowder, especially in the colder months when all you need is something to warm you up! And of course, the chips were delicious. read more

We had to have seafood during our stay in Galway City. We selected McDonagh's based on Yelp reviews and its location on the pedestrian way. We were there on a Sunday night so there was no table service but the young lady at the counter was very helpful and warm in assisting us with the offerings. She brought our fish and chips orders over when they ready. The food was very good. I also noticed that it seemed pretty popular with the locals. I would go back there in a heartbeat. All I can say is that I am a fan, and comes well recommended all around town. Our lovely waitress was patient and work with us so. The food is fast, but oh so good. We chose this restaurant because it was recommended for families with children, and it did not disappoint in that respect. There was a long line for table service, but once we sat down, the servers were attentive and friendly, getting our toddler settled with some milk, bread, and crayons right away. The fish was basic but fresh and well prepared. Our server recommended a reasonably priced wine that ended up being wonderful. I traveled to Galway during a backpacking trip through Europe, and the UK, and a good friend of mine (who does not eat seafood) recommended McDonagh's for Fish n Chips (as I was on a mission to find the best around) and I was not at all disappointed. This place is fast and delicious and though the seating for the take out side was small and somewhat cluttered, I imagine this place has been in business for awhile so they know what they're doing. We were told this was the "best" fish & chips in Galway City. While it was the only one we had in Galway, I wouldn't go as far as calling it amazing. They fish sits in a warmer, so it's not freshly made-to-order and the chips are prepared the same way. The taste was good and the serving size was very generous.
