Stopped by after a Warriors game, hoping to catch some late night appetizers. The kitchen was closed, so no grub, but the party at the bar was in full swing. Had a few relatively priced drinks. They earned an extra star just by carrying my favorite rum, Flor de Caña. Friendly barkeeps a bonus. The ambiance was a quirky mix of young hipster types and old retirees, of blue-collar with a small element of thug thrown in. I dig the jukeboxes & pool table & flat panels lining the bar. I went to McGee's a couple weeks ago with a friend to watch a Warrior playoff game and I must say, I was impressed. I went to high school in Alameda and never heard of the place but I'm glad I found it now. When I first walked in I was surprised to see such great decor. The wood furnishings are great and I love the layout. The bar is a bit small but well stocked with some great beers on tap. To order food you have to order at the kitchen where you receive a number and the food is brought to the table of your choosing. I had the blackened chicken sandwich which was great. Other menu items sound really good too, I can't wait to come back and try them. Just a quick look in the kitchen and you'll see some great cooking going on. Last night I went to McGee's again. It's like my 5th time. I've gone with family, I've gone with friends, and I've gone alone. This particular time it was alone for dinner cause I was too lazy to cook. I Love the slow paced, no pressure, relaxed neighborhood vibe here. The bar is frequented by locals and seated at the tables are families in jeans/tshirts. Food is semi cafeteria style and you can see them cook. Good fried foods but mostly fried foods. Don't expect fine dining here buddy. I recommend the burger, turkey burger, blt(lots of bacon), patty melt, and ceasar salad. I don't recommend the roast beef or french dip. Even in Alameda... you can do better. Someone I know forced us all to go here for New Year's Eve. He said "We're going here and that's that". This is the place to go in Alameda. The owners are awesome the bar tenders very very awesome and the waitresses are prompt and on the ball. Me and a co-worker come in for lunch and have a wonderful meal and some drinks and maybe a few shots to go with it. Waitress and food staff are always on point! The next time you find yourself in Alameda and you are able to partake in some adult beverages, then go to McGee's, step up to the bar and order a "Mussolini." A friend of mine once described it as "It's like Tiramisu, but liquid and it will get you drunk." Apt description indeed. The kitchen gets all of the bar basics down pat. The hot wings could be hotter but are otherwise pretty decent, fried chicken is awesome and they even have "sliders." If you want gourmet cuisine, don't come here. It's a bar and grill in the truest sense of the word. This ain't no Applebee's, it's a real bar and grill They have a shuffleboard, a decent jukebox and plenty of TV screens to watch sports. As the holidays are now over, I can sit back and quietly reflect on the weeks of gluttony and sloth I have endured and enabled in others. I can also try can catch up on my reviews. I agree with Steven B., if I wanted the equivalent of a Shady Pines in Alameda, I'd go here on a Sunday afternoon. The problem was, this was a Saturday...and I felt that fruit cups and sides of ice berg lettuce made my ladyparts shrivel and think prunes for dessert was a good idea. The pub fare is grand and the price is just right for this jobless wonder. It's a simple "order from the chalkboard and wait for your number" type service. I was prepping for a day of drinking at Hangar 1, so I wanted some fried goodness to start me off. Carb loading if you will, for the marathon ahead. I had the calamari which looked like onion rings--that made me suspicious. Where did all the squiggly parts go? The homemade potatoes were like a potato, cut into four pieces, barely seasoned. You know my fondness for spuds, and well, these just didn't float my tater boat. They were neither fries, nor home fries. I'm glad I experienced it, our server was awesome and sweet and it's a locals kind of place. Problem is, I'm not a local there and well, I felt about 20 years too young and not into football. Came here after a night at Drake's Barrel House, meeting with a bunch of friends late in the evening. The place was really lively. Lots of people, lots of TVs and sports - quite the place to be at night with buddies for a beer or two. (or more~) Our group arrived a little before the cook closed shop, so we were able to get our grub on with lots of finger foods (cheese sticks, fries, and chips w/ guacamole). Good stuff, and the guac had a little kick to it which was delightfully surprising. :) The place was pretty rowdy with all the people, but not in a negative way at all. If I had to recommend a local bar in the Alameda area, I'd come here. read more

This place is a good simple traditional bar. The food is nothing too special (although they are trying to make it fancier with items like a Pork Confit Quesadilla!) and the drink selection is decent. There are always lots of people having a good time and TVs and Shuffleboard! For dinner we split a couple of Appys - the Pork Confit Quesadilla and the Zucchini Corn Fritters. The Quesadilla was great except for the presentation/plating sucked. They drizzled sour cream all over it in a messy fashion which turned a good tasting appy and made it soggy and gross mess. i was really disappointed. The fritters my wife loved but I hated. They are more zucchini than corn, and not what I was expecting. Again they drowned it in sour cream and it got gross. I thought it would be a traditional corn fritter with some zucchini in it, but it was not this way. If you're a huge zucchini fan you might really like these. The beer selection was decent and the merlot house wine was actually good - something you don't typically find in a bar. My husband and I ordered the salt and pepper wings, braised beef short rib sliders, and onion rings. The sliders were so flavorful and the meat was so tender. I would highly recommend this! The onion rings were light, crispy and had a rich flavor. Not too greasy and oily. I loved that about them! It's hard to find onion rings that aren't super oily. Good place, good eats, good drinks, good friends..... you choose the order! They have a fully stocked bar, and the food.... well, the menu is overwhelming as you would like it ALL! But, not to fret... it's a place you wouldn't mind frequenting time and time again. It's kid friendly during the day/evening, but when happy hour hits or night time, maybe keep the kids home so they don't see the parents having too much fun! :) There's a smoking section in the back/outside, so you don't have to worry about having stinky cigarette smoke blown in your face as you walk into the establishment. There are pool tables, and that air-plinker type of game (can't remember what it's called), and a lot of tvs. There's history to the McGee's Bar & Grill place.... it's actually NOT the only one.... there's another one.... in another state.... and history behind it.... and I won't spill the beans. You should go there and find out why we have a McGee's here in Alameda! I'm happy that if you can't find street parking, then don't worry! There's a dedicated FREE car park right next to the bar that is shared with the Alameda Marketplace (I've done a Yelp review for that place already!), and they are across the street. It's not a high end pub, but it's an "old wealth" type of place. While there are many other bars/pubs in Alameda that have been around or changed ownerships or names, this is a true Alameda establishment and has been around and the "Old Wealth" or "Native" Alameda folks go here, where as other pubs/bars cater to the Military, "Transplants", visitors, or those who don't have a clue about the "Politics" of Alameda. And..... during happy hour, I believe it's the cheapest place for a Grey Goose or Premium Label drink! Either that, or other pubs/bars are charging more for their Well Drinks! :) read more

My boyfriend and I have been here a handful of times in the last few months. We were happy to find it because we've been on the hunt for a good sports bar. The food has always been pretty good and overall it's a good place to watch a game. We went last night to find that the kitchen recently changed ownership. Naturally, we were a little nervous because we've always been pleased with the food. I'm happy to report that the new kitchen did not disappoint. The burger was fantastic! Other than Lucky 13, this is a place to go for a heartier beer selection on Park st. McGee's however is not dimly lit and does accept credit cards. More of a mom and pop type bar and grill with a truly unique "old school" feel to it. Most of the bar staff are seasoned vets, you want to know the right way to make a drink, ask them. You order your food at a counter in the back, most of which is above average for pub fare, and essentially serve yourself the entire time. Good place for a game as they have a giant projector screen in the back, but a very narrow bar makes huge events a little more tricky to find a comfortable spot. I'm just gonna start off with a fact.... I love McGee's. It's a great small-town eatery and bar. It's the perfect place to bring your family for dinner if you want to have a beer and watch a football game. There are plenty of TV screens, so it's not likely that you'll miss the game you want to watch. You order your food at a walk-up counter and they call your name when it's ready. It's kinda like eating at Grandma's house. Their burgers are pretty much... amazing. They have delicious home-made soups too. Most of the regulars here are long time Alameda folk. It was Thursday nite, drove down High St. to pick up my friend who's I haven't seen in years. We were deciding where to get a drink as I turned onto Park St. I was taken back how much my home town had changed. We kicked around a few places as options, turns out McGee's is still around. She's been living in Alameda for 5 years, but she never set foot inside, what's up with that? I pull up the parking lot and it was completely full, but I managed to snag a spot when a car left. Inside was also full, bar and tables alike, I got a Fat Tire, and she a Stella, with the 9ers game on, we sat against the wall and waited for a table, didn't take long and we soon found ourselves seated next to the other entrance where people would go and smoke, cough cough. We were almost done with our first round and the aroma from the kitchen got us hungry. We ordered up some spicy wings, she had a cheese burger, and I got the buffalo burger with string fries. It soon got super noisy after a large group sat next to us, I could hardly hear myself let alone my friend. I got a Hefe and a Blue Moon for her to wash down the food. The wings, fries and burgers were tasty, except my buffalo patty was tiny, not even close to the diameter of a baseball, I know it's lean meat, but come on! We finished our food and drinks, was about to go for round three, but the people in the big group started to play quarters, the volume went up another 20 decibels, and more cigarette smoke came in outside. That was our cue to make an exit. Food is good, staff is friendly, beer is fresh, next time I will bring some ear plugs and brush up on my sign language. read more

Decent food, pretty good atmosphere. Although the kids playing shuffleboard is not what I look for in a bar. It is kind of a neighborhood, family bar. The crowd gets younger and hipper as the night progresses. The beer is a little bit steep and they only have one dark beer: Guinness. Now I love my Guinness, but I consider it the crap end of dark beer. Like Bud for Pilsner. I asked for something dark other than Guinness and the guy poured me something that wasn't even an Amber. My one knock on this place is that the kitchen and bar are run separately, and that I've been asked to pay separately in the past as well... That being said, the food here is consistent. The smallish bar gets packed easily, but the crowd is friendly. The selection of beers on tap here is impressive. $4.50 for Racer 5 can't be beat... The service here sticks out. I'm starting off my rating of this joint with a lowly three stars only because my burger and my friends were really, really crapola. Like stale buns, soggy fries and cardboard like patties, c'mon guys, this is easy sh!t, get it right. Really, not impressed. Actually left me hungrier after I ate it for want of some actual flavor. And the clam chowder (yes I have a misguided weakness for it and order it in all the wrong places) was just salty muck. My other friend (regular here) says the fried action is really good and enjoyed his fish n chips. So the good range of beers (inc Drakes which is excellent) and decent prices, game options and mostly good music along with the relaxed atmosphere will get me back here again- to try some fried grub and hope they do better on that effort.. read more

Eh my girlfriend used to work here for a year or 2, I've been here plenty. I suggest getting the home fries over the shoestring, and maybe a sandwich... I normally ordered a swiss grilled cheese on sourdough with onions, lettuce and tomato.. Pretty good actually. Brian (one of the bartenders) will make you a great mussolini if you catch him in there (usually works nights I believe..) Oh and they have free SHUFFLEBOARD!! Just the half sized table with the bumpers though. Keep in mind this place has cocktail waitress service only, you have to get your own food from the grill, they're separately owned. One thing that tends to bug a lot of people from what I hear... The crowd tends towards sports fans and families in the daytime, in the evenings expect a mixed older crowd for the most part. read more

We were fortunate to come here the day of the art and wine festival, and had practically the whole patio to ourselves..while watching the bay to bridge series..anyhow our busboy David was awesome. Sadly my previous review of 5 stars is no longer valid. The last 2 burgers I've had, have been very dry and just unpleasant. The fries have also changed and are no longer thick cut. The other night I headed over to 1645 Park Street, many of you may not know the building by address but if you live in Alameda you know it by name. The Victorian building houses an Alameda Institution, McGee's Bar and Grill. I am very partial to McGee's, in part, because owners John and Linda Costello gave me a job when I was in college and more importantly because I always feel like I am at home in this Pub and Bar. A friend of mine and I started the evening down the street at another bar, but after poor service from the bartender and the wrong drink we headed to McGee's to salvage the evening. That night, both John and Linda were in the bar and I got a chance to talk to John for about 30 minutes and I realized that for most of my life and all of my adult life McGee's has been a part of it. We talked about changes in Alameda since he bought the bar over 30-years ago, at the young age of 25. This place is his life and he treats customers with respect. Linda always add warmth to the place and customers come and go like family. General Manager Tim Goodman works the crowd and make sure that the operation is working for the customer. The staff knows the regulars and what they drink. McGee's serves as an informal gathering spot for long-term Alameda residents who have left the Island and want to meet up with old friends. McGee's is a very friendly and comfortable place. It's also a great place to go watch a game without being surrounded totally by "sports bros." I think this is because, while a bar, the full service kitchen makes it an all ages establishment. It's not uncommon to see a full little leage or soccer team pile in after a game.
