This catfish is AMAZING! In fact, everything here is amazing! I was at Lake Murray years ago (15+) and some friends said "let's go to McGehee's", so we did. We swore that they were taking us out in the country to kill us...lol. That's how far out in the boonies this place is, but well worth the drive, even from OKC, which we have made several times over the past 15 years. On my way home from OKC and I stopped in here having heard a lot of positives about it but never having stopped. I was not disappointed. Service was quick and very hospitable. A few locals were in but otherwise it was quiet on this Sunday evening. The setup was cole slaw, hush puppies and their famous green tomato relish. The hush puppies and tomato relish were fantastic. Admittedly, the cole saw tasted like grocery tore cole slaw and that was skittle disappointing. The catfish was fresh and tasted like it was just caught, that delicious taste of fresh caught river cat. Food was delivered quickly and I was stuffed after just two pieces of fish and devouring the setup. If you're in the Marietta area, on on your way home from WinStar, check them out. read more

My previous visit here was about 6 years ago. Ate there last night and I was disappointed with the food quality and table service. My wife and I ordered all you eat catfish. Our order came out immediately meaning everything was precooked. The catfish was luke warm, fries were on cooler side and hush puppies were cold as well. We also had several fish on our first platter with really bad gamey taste. We've eaten a ton of catfish and this was a bad taste we've never had before. The second platter of fish and fries were hot and all tasted good. The only waitress working was busy and slow to respond. Also the women's restroom was dirty and the front doors to the restaurant was full of glass handprints and needed to cleaned. (Not a good first impression) This place use to be awesome but based on my visit last night it's doubtful I'll be back unless big changes occur. read more

The three of us(two adult and one child) arrived at 5pm today. We drove for over an hour to experience a dirty environment, filthy restroom and had to get up from our table several times to ask for tea refills and other service. We won't return but hope to save others the trouble. The server told us intitially that the place used to be much busier but she hadn't seen that in the six years she'd worked. read more

Ate at McGehee on Sunday, January 6, 2013. I had eaten there several times before. It should have tipped me off when we pulled up and there were only about 8 vehicles in the parking lot. The parking lot use to stay full. I'm sure some of them were employees. The catfish is only average now. I believe they have quit using peanut oil or they are not changing the oil regularly. Or maybe they got rid of the cook as the french fries were all soggy and taste less. The cold slaw was sub par. When we ordered we told the waitress that one in our party was a vegetarian and would only eat a little cold slaw and fries. They still charged us full price; almost $17.00 for a serving of cold slaw and about a dozen fries. Very disappointed, to the point I won't go back. read more

Dear JP from Plano, Boy, you sure must have got up on the wrong side of the bed when you wrote your review of McGehee's. A rating of 3-4 out of 5 is very fair for this restaurant (both food and facility) and I am not even a fan of catfish! Their green tomato relish is "to die for". Only two stars, at best. The facility smelled badly and was very run down overall. The fish was just okay, not seasoned. The hush puppies we very bland, no onion or peppers in them. The French fries were good. The meal was quite overpriced. We will not return. Make that one star. read more

All I can say is that if you've never been here, you need to make the trip. I found this place about 35 years ago and have driven there from Dallas at least once a year since then. The last time, I brought someone who "never did like hushpuppies", I thought, "just wait." She became a hushpuppie eating machine; I think I got two! Anyway, looking for a good day trip? It's not often that I rate five stars but this place deserves that and five more! Their fried catfish is fresh, crispy and seasoned to perfection. My husband and I, along with his parents, go there two to three times a year at least. They have a menu with other items such as burgers and steak, but most people order the all you can eat catfish. That comes out family style along with home cut fries, coleslaw, hush puppies, tomato relish, pickle slices, sliced onion and banana peppers. They give very generous portions so you never leave feeling hungry. It is quite a drive and it's hidden if you aren't familiar with the area. We had heard good things so we drove up from Denton, TX. We had a party of 9, 7 people having the catfish. It took a long time to get our drinks and longer to get the food. The place was not that busy when we got there at 5:30. The food was actually very good. The service was some of the worst we had ever experienced. It is family style. They brought a platter of catfish which was just enough for each of us to have 1 and 1/2 piece each. It was 20 to 30 minutes later before we got anything else. That was after we made the owner (I think) /server mad by complaining when she FINALLY came back by our table. We will not be making that trip again! read more

Best catfish restaurant in this part of the country; south Oklahoma, north Texas, almost anywhere within driving distance of the place. Catfish and hushpuppies are outstanding and the "real" french fries were unbelieveable! Anyone I know who "knows" catfish will recommend this place. read more

For you disappointed/illusioned folks - you should try BGs Catfish in Kingston, OK. It is easier to take 377 north from the Denton/Aubrey area than getting there from I35. Great all-you-can-eat place and the fish is always perfectly seasoned and fried. You will also find other items like shrimp and chicken with a salad bar and dessert. read more

I was at the restaurant last Saturday evening and was very disappointed in the food quality. I have eaten there many times, but this time wasn't a good experience. The hushpuppies were very hard and over cooked, The catfish was also over cooked and very thin. The filets usually are at least a 1/2 inch thick but these were only 1/8 inch thick. Well, after much hype from fellow church members, my husband and I went along with a group of 23 in caravan. We had reservations for 5:00 pm (when they open). The doors were finally unlocked at 5:15 pm. Our reserved tables were all in a straight row, crowded together so tight that you literally couldn't push a piece of paper through much less the fact that we literally had to eat with our arms held in very close. I had been told by several Sunday school class members that you couldn't get better catfish than McGehee's. We finally arrived there after 1 1/2 hours (from Ft. Worth/Dallas area), got lost 2 times because the GPS couldn't find it and their signage on I-35 was lousy. Had to ask 3 times for a menu since I don't eat catfish, only to discover the only thing on the menu is catfish. They do have chicken (deep fried in the same oil) and cold potato fries (would have been good if they had been hot). Nothing else offered except FRIED food, no salad or veggies, albeit slaw & pickled green tomatoes. Service was lousy, we were constantly having to ask for refills on what was supposed to be endless food and I finally was able to get a refill on my tea just as we were leaving. Ambiance was supposed to be great. NOT!!!! The view of the Red River didn't exist although they can't control mother nature. This may have been salvageable if they hadn't charged $18 per person without tea for mediocre fish, lousy boneless chicken patties, cold fries and tasteless slaw made with horseradish. Best thing I ate, cold hush puppies. We WON'T be going back, period!!!! read more

Excellent catfish. There are very few catfish restaurants in the south that I have not had the privilege to visit. My wife and I grew up on fried catfish in East Texas. Eating is one of my great passions and I highly recommend McGehee's. I can say out of at least 30 visits my wife and I have never been disappointed. We would not drive from Dallas unless the fish was excellent. My other favorite are the french fries. read more
