The food here has really fallen off. The menu is expanded but the quality is sub par at best. The bangers and mash: the sausages were horrible. Tasted too sweet and like they were filled with gristle. The mash and beans are good but seriously, avoid this dish. However, I met a friend of mine here for drinks and appetizers last week. The crab dip was pretty decent, and sufficed for a late night meal. The drinks were good too, and not weakened or 'syrup-ed' down as I might have expected. The guy on the guitar who serenaded us all night was pretty cool, too. It's too bad he really didn't know any John Mayer songs. Although his rendition of that "Hey There, Delilah" song was fantastic. I am not a pop culture follower, and I swear I never know how I know the lyrics to such songs; because my radio is never on... but, that is one of my favorite songs, and he got the notes just right. Was pleasantly surprised to find out this place has such a great 3 course brunch for just $20. Crepes Brulee (4/5 NOMs) When desserts fall in love. Its as if crepe and cram brûlée got married and had a baby. One very delicious baby. They combined the best of two things with crepe covered in lemon custard base cream and topped with berries and toasted pecans. It wasn't just sweet, it was super sweet with a mixture of soft and crunchy texture. Kind of wish they give you a knife to eat with, because the spoon is just not sharp enough to cut through the crepe. Crab Cake Eggs Benedict (4/5 NOMs) I might have brunch eggdiction. It really is hard to pass up ordering Eggs Benedict, we might just have a problem. Love poking holes and letting all the runny egg yoke flow everywhere. After all, why order poached eggs unless they flow. So many places do it wrong, but here they do it right. Comes with two solid crab cakes that would make Maryland proud as a crab state. They are not too big and kind of left us wanting a bit more. What really set this apart form everything else were the potatoes. Don't know what they did to them, but they tasted so good. Almost asked for extra. Brunch Tart (3/5 NOMs) Mcbrunching tart away. Its a big Boris fist size square crispy tart filled with a mixture of avocado, tomatoes,mozzarella and scallions. All that topped with a sunny side up egg and a piece of bacon. This is one of those dishes you got to enjoy little bit of everything together in every bite for the best flavor combination. Tart is a little bit dry so make sure to get that sunny side up egg everywhere. Still every flavor seem to fit just right and a light flavor was quite enjoyable. Just an update - we recently decided to get a bite to eat here after seeing a movie. A tuna tartare was on the menu, and it was phenomenal! For dinner, I had the club sandwich. What an amazing improvement over the previous chef's version! It was toasted, the bread was buttery without being soggy, and the Dubliner cheese was perfectly melted into the sandwich! Getting some food after a movie in Silver Sprung can be problematic - most places are closed or about to be. And besides keeping bar hours, McGinty's is right across the street from the theater. There are three seating areas: sidewalk, downstairs, and upstairs. I went to the bar downstairs, pub style without trying too hard, and ordered a pint of Smithwicks, one of my favorite brews, and the Irish Breakfast. Very nice protein loading - three kinds of sausage, eggs, some delightfully smoky gammon (that would be rasher on the menu, it's lean cured pork much like Canadian bacon), straight up mashed potatoes garnished with home made chips, grilled tomato, and beans. Tasty, stick to the ribs meal, my only gripe is that I'm pretty sure the beans came out of that familiar red and white can. And while I enjoyed the classic rock in the background, it didn't fit the rest of the atmosphere. I've had pub grub in England, and this was on point. Friendly service, honest prices, all the Irish classics on the menu, and signs for an upscale restaurant-within-a-restaurant upstairs. Silver Spring downtown has come a long way, it's been quite sometime since I visit the downtown area. The restaurant selection was not the greatest mainly filled with franchiases but we ended up at McGinty's, it had a downstairs bar but the upstairs bar was way more spacious. For that reason, I hadn't eaten here in 3 or 4 years but I recently noticed they have a revamped menu and was hoping they turned the kitchen around. Nope. The chicken and waffles were disgusting. The chicken was greasy, the waffles tasted like cardboard, and the bacon strips were covered in a thick glaze that made them inedible. So disappointing. McGinty's is the definition of an Irish bar. Home style food, whiskys and pints, European leagues on the tv and the occasional live performance. We've had the food here many times, plenty of snacks on the menu, as well as some quality home style Irish dishes, the Sheppard's pie is definately a must-try! Staff have always been great, service is quick and the bar is plenty big with a good amount of bar seating just beyond. They host some cool events here as well, we had custom Guiness glasses made when the rep was visiting and we've been to a charity silent auction here. Definately recommend a visit, a great addition to Silver Spring and a great spot for some drinks with friends or a happy hour/ pregame before going to the city! read more

The place was so good I ate there two nights in a row. The Shepherd's Pie was outstanding. The second night I ordered the sampler and the lamb stew was equally enjoyable. The grilled vegetables were seasoned well and lightly cooked, leaving the nutrients in the crunch. Pretty decent beer selection on tap, probably 10 or so? I have slept on McGinty's for a while now, but I think I have finally seen the light! This is a great neigborhood bar, and certainly my go-to in the DT Silver Spring area. The bar is always full, most of which being regulars. My review is for their Turkey Burger. On the menu it is called something different, "Green rabit" or something like that. Regardless of the name, I have to say it was one of THE BEST turkey burgers I have had. The patty tasted almost like a meatloaf if was so moist and flavorful. This was a pleasant departure from the usual turkey burgers that I find to be dry and flavorless. Additionally it was topped with a avocado and creme fraise.. and some other unnecessary ingredients. The bottom line is, this has become my choice burger spot in the area and I will definitely be back. The fries are also outstanding! Came here for a friend's birthday after work. All the other reviews are pretty accurate. The upstairs is a nice big room with lots of seats. There was live music which was really good. A guy was playing 90's music on his guitar and he was good. Service was great. Our waiter was cool and friendly. He joked around with us and got our food and drinks fast. The atmosphere both upstairs and downstairs is great. Lots of room to hang out and talk. Great place to chill for a happy hour. 3 stars for the food though. The food was really bland and just ok. Tried 2 or 3 of the dishes and everything was just ok. I would definitely come back here for happy hours and to hang out with friends, but would rather eat some where else. read more

Almost every time I wander into Silver Spring, I seem to wind up at McGinty's Public House for some reason or another. Honestly, I really enjoy going here. It's not exactly unique or remarkably innovative....it's just a really solid, reliable, fun Irish pub that serves good drinks and tasty food. While I seem to go here often, I can't remember having ever before tried a full meal. That is, until one recent evening when I joined some friends for a rather long visit that included a full meal, so I finally felt qualified to really review the place fairly. We ordered several beverages ranging from beers to mixed drinks, and all were good. They have a reasonable selection of drafts and make a sizable, strong cocktail. I was very happy with their whiskey sours - my go-to drink. For food, we shared some hummus as well as an order of spinach and artichoke dip. Both were quite enjoyable. The hummus had a nice texture and came with warm pita, which is always nice. The dip comes with tortilla chips and is very smooth but chock-full of spinach, as you can tell from the color of it. For my main course, I ordered the veggie burger with a side salad. They seem to actually make their own veggie burgers, which always bumps a restaurant up a notch for me. Warning that they are messy -- I couldn't eat it with my hands because it kept falling apart -- but it's delicious even with a fork (as awkward as I looked eating it that way). If you are looking for something extremely authentic or out of the box, I doubt that this is the place for you, but if you want a fun, relaxed environment to hang out with friends and share a meal and/or a stiff drink, then this is a great spot for it. I have been here for food only. I especially like the Shepherd's Pie, and other dishes have varying degrees of success with my friends. Regarding seating- my friends and I have sat in the downstairs dining area (crowded although there are two to three tables that are set apart in the back) and an upstairs. I think that service might be better downstairs than upstairs, but I haven't come often enough to judge that with certainty. The Shepherd's Pie is really good but not always consistent- I once ordered it and was disappointed because it seemed like the ratio of mashed potatoes to meat was off, but it turned out that it was because the layers were not evenly distributed. Next time I might just mix it all just so I know I have an even distribution! It also comes with some steamed vegetables (nothing special there but there's a good amount). PS: Don't get coffee here. Friend got some because he was going to a midnight showing and wanted to stay awake and it was apparently really bad. Too bad Starbucks was closed! read more

3.5 stars. Thursday night was my second visit to McGinty's. The first time we sat at the upstairs bar for dinner since it was late. Last night we were downstairs in a booth around 8 o'clock. Even though the place was packed, our server was right on top of things. We put in our drink and appetizer order right away and the drinks arrived promptly. Followed shortly by our mussels. The mussels were steamed perfectly, the broth addicting, and the garlic bread was toasted just right. For mains my friend and I shared the bacon wrapped roasted salmon with a bell pepper sauce and McGinty's Irish Casserole Sampler (Beef and Guiness Stew, Lamb Stew, and Sheperd's Pie) which is served with steamed vegetables. The ends of the salmon were a bit overdone but the middle bites were cooked perfectly. This was a good dish. As for the Casserole Sampler - all three dishes were quite tasty. I don't always like big pieces of lamb but was curious about the stew so the sampler was a nice way to try it without having to order an main course sized portion. I liked it but I liked both the Guiness Stew and the Sheperd's Pie better. Luckily my friend really likes lamb and was more than happy to eat the majority of the Lamb Stew. The Beef and Guiness stew was a delicious blend of flavors and tasted like it had been slow cooked. I would definitely order this again, but my favorite dish of the Sampler was the Sheperd's Pie. I've made Sheperd's Pie a few times, but there is something in the "gravy" in McGinty's that is just so delicious. I'm now on a mission to figure out how to make mine just as good. McGinty's is a solid restaurant. I've had good service and good food on both visits and the next time I am in that area of Silver Spring I would be more than happy to go back. read more

This is our go-to spot in Downtown Silver Spring. Good beer selection, great food, and awesome bartenders. The fish and chips is a HUGE portion, but awesome. Average venue with outdated, heavy bar food and an ho-hum draft list. Service was poor on our latest visit. 3-4 visits here and it's a very average Irish pub with average food. The draft list isn't impressive with mostly macros on draft like Stella Artois, Yuengling, Bud Light, Shock Top. Happy hour got you $1 off certain beers. On our latest visit with a group of 8, we ordered a bunch of plates to share: stuffed potato skins "Irish Boxty", fish & chips, hummus & pita. I think most people were underwhelmed with the food as much of it went uneaten. I went with one of the few craft beers on draft and it was tasting not super fresh, but was still drinkable. Popped in for a hot minute whilst lost in the local market with family. I was in for a total of maybe 5 minutes. I bellied up to the bar, and a young lady immediately asked me what I was having. A asked for a Guinness and she poured me a proper, correct Guinness. I slammed it and had to leave. It was $7.90, on par with Manhattan prices so I can't complain too much. Will definitely be back to eat and see about that 5th star! read more

Last night my wife and I ordered a corned beef plate and a hamburger and fries. Both were bland and poor quality. My burger was so dry, there wasn't any juice left, even though I ordered medium well. There was almost no seasoning, and the only discernible flavor was the Irish cheddar on top. I could only eat about 1/4 of the burger because it was so bland. The meat was poor quality and was overly chewy. I tasted my wife's corned beef, and it had almost no seasoning either. I'm part Irish and grew up on corned beef, this truly was a pathetic representation of the food. My wife told the server it was bland and asked for fish and chips, which also lacked any flavor. The fish tasted like hot water. Three out of three dishes were a fail. Can I say the fries were a total disappointment too? The potatoes didn't taste fresh, and there again, was no seasoning except whatever fat they were cooked in. We ate downstairs, and the server was the bartender, who literally turned his back and walked away while my wife was still talking. It was so rude. We will not be returning. Came here for lunch this past Saturday and we had an amazing experience. My husbands sister and her husband and their baby are in town and we were starving. So we saw this place in downtown silver Spring and decided to give it a try. I ordered the turkey club with a side cesar salad and a Bloody Mary and everyone else ordered the cheeseburger. All of our food was amazing and so were the drinks. I believe the Bloody Mary was on special along with mimosas for 4.00 a piece which is a good deal. The only thing I would recommend is they need to have a broader lunch menu. I think because it was the weekend they only offered brunch, which I understand, but for those of us who have families and kids we don't want the brunch vibe. Other than that everything was perfect. COCKROACHES- Worst experience ever!!! Saturday night a friend and I were sitting at the bar. I saw a cockroach walking on the bar top & I notified an employee. He came, picked it up and walked away. He didn't acknowledge us or the incident. I informed the bartender and about five minutes later the Manager came and spoke to us. He asked us if there was a problem. I let him know that I was surprised he didn't say anything about the incident. His response was "did you want me to say something to the cockroach?" Really??? Ok place to drink. Came on a Wednesday at 7:30pm before a movie. Sat at the bar upstairs. Service was very slow. There were about five people at the bar and the bartender was chitchatting with one of the patrons. He got me my first drink in a timely manner but after that it was really hard to get his attention for anything. He was continuing to chitchat or he was not paying attention to my side of the bar even though he hadn't looked our way in a while. My friend and I had to wave our arms or say "excuse me" across the bar to get his attention. Another employee walking by got us our menus. It took a while to get our second drink, to order, and the check. He also did not make my drink properly. I ordered a Jameson on the rocks with a splash of ginger beer. He did not put in enough ice and it was syrupy. I know because I went to bartending school. Stick to beer. I ordered the turkey burger with a salad as my side. I liked that the salad was field greens and not iceberg lettuce. The turkey burger was ok and had cumin, which I liked. That patty was pretty soft so it was really hard to tell if it was actually cooked all the way through. It was that mushy texture where you might think it could be raw meat, but you're not sure. The avocado was the right ripeness. Couldn't taste the Brie. I'd come here to drink beer in a laid back pub atmosphere because there aren't any other pubs around there. read more

We ordered a take out dinner from McGinty's, which was given to us curbside on time. We ordered a corned beef & cabbage dinner and a hamburger with fries, along with an order of their wings. The cabbage with the corned beef needed a bit more cooking and care removing the tough ribs of the savoy cabbage. The crema sauce didn't have a lot of flavor, but the corned beef & red potatoes were very good. The hamburger & wings were really good. We hope that everyone takes advantage of their curbside pickup and ordering from our local restaurants in general to keep them in business during our lockdown. read more

Linda was my server, she was great. I had a Waredaca Revelle Stout while I waited for the Elite Event at BurgerFi to begin. The only downside here was that the Bartender I encountered first, although he dropped off a napkin, didn't even ask if I knew what I wanted. He was so busy chatting it up with two young waitresses at the service bar that he couldn't come down and help me. I stared at him, and he stared back. I couldn't help but think that the waitress was saying: "I think that guy down there is ready to order or something..." I could practically read her lips. I was literally about to stand up and leave when a lovely lady got behind the bar. She made her way down to my end and helped me come to a decision. She let me taste a beer and talked over possibilities and flavors with me. Oh yeah, and she was authentically Irish, so that was a plus! Anyway, the beer was fine. The price was fine. This bar almost suffered a catastrophic review because any bar can serve me an overpriced drink, but they'd better make me feel great while gouging me. McGinty's almost failed at that. Lucky for them, Linda showed up. She was the face of the bar that actually cared about the customer. So I'm back with a full review of @mcgintys_public_house in Silver Spring, MD. I went a few months ago and I didn't have a good experience. So McGinty's is an Irish pub offering standard bar food and some traditional Irish dishes. I tried their Irish nachos, their wings, and their Maryland crab cake sandwich. The nachos definitely looked good but, as you know, looks can deceiving. The pulled pork on them was tough and poorly seasoned, and the chips were soggy too. The the Maryland crab cake sandwich was a joke. I took one bite and told the waiter to take it back. I didn't see any crab meat in it, and being from Baltimore I know what crab meat looks like and taste like. I didn't know what I took a bite off lol. So they took it back, and I got their BBQ wings instead. They were the worst wings I have ever had in my life. They were over cooked and it seems like they poured beer in the BBQ sauce because it sour. Honestly I can't even recommend this place for drinks. Take my advice, if you are in the area just eat and drink at @daveandbusters! You can thank me later! read more
