When to the Renton store today rang the help bell 5 times in the hardware area ( Nuts and Bolts ) and waited 10 minutes no one came, went to the counter were the Keys are made no one their. I can understand this type of services from the big box stores but really surprised about McLendons Renton store. I have noticed the last 4 times down their very hard to find help the new ownership is running this place into the ground sad. read more

I think I came here on a bad day or something. I was having a hard time finding a metric bolt so I asked for help. The lady whom helped me was yelling at me because I grab the wrong bolt that was on the bottom rack. Wow! Rude much? Not the cheapest compared to other major hardware stores. Read all the goodie goodie reviews on this store (most likely paid reviews.) and went to this store to familiarize myself where everything is. Guess wearing a mask I looked suspicious, but wait, everyone was wearing a mask. So I locate the decking material and no one around or brochures or anything to give an idea of cost of composites and railing systems. So I grabbed a bunch of stuff I needed to get going on another project. So I'm waiting in line with 2 people ahead of me and standing there 10 minutes at least. People are coming up behind me so they call in cashier reinforcements and take the people behind me who've just got in line. I set down my stuff and left. Hoping that they finally carry cabinet/furniture grade lumber, I made a trip to Renton just to see for myself. WRONG! Still just the same old stuff good only for rough work. Ever walk into a hardware store and see 20 cash register lines, 30+ people standing in line and only one cashier? Well you weren't at McClendon's. The fact that they have enough cashiers to get you out quickly is more than reason enough to shop there. Add to that, the awesome staff that really knows their stuff and can give fantastic advice, the super great wall of soda (yeah in a hardware store right?), and all the cool things that keep a DIY home improvement person happy. The tool department is actually larger than the other two box stores, everything we have bought for the garden lives longer than the stuff from the box stores and the employees know what they are talking about and can do more than just tell you which aisle something can be found. I really like shopping here, mostly because the staff are very knowledgable and helpful. They have an electric and plumbing desk I use a lot, there is usually someone at the desk and can answer questions, and seems to know the subject real well. If you want hardware geeks, this is your store. These people absolutely know what they are doing. If you simply want a smiling face who doesn't have a clue - you won't find them here. Went there recently to research a sump pump. I thought I knew what I wanted but figured I would double check with the plumbing department. Turns out I needed something else altogether and they saved me 3 hours of work and probably $50 in parts. So I just stopped in because I saw a rocking Adirondack chair outside. All of the regular ones were on sale so I was hoping that one would be also but there was no price on it. So I went inside all the cashiers were busy so I went over to the furniture section there was no one there. I found a employee that worked in the flower department and she came over to look for me. None of that furniture was inside it so she try to look for in the computer and couldn't find it so then we walked outside to get the chair to get the price. I love this location, for the most part. Give me a second to explain... Every time I go into this location, again for the most part, I have a great experience! I've had a run-in with the store manager who is completely aloof to customer service or even wanting to help customers, but regardless of him his staff makes up for it 110%. I went in to buy an air conditioner and the assistant manager and store manager were ZERO help. Treated me like I was stupid and/or that I could not read the AC box... I am immediately defensive when I hear condescending behavior! The managers should be ashamed of themselves, but I'm sure they simply do not care. I mark this place as four stars not because of the asinine management but because of the fantastic staff. I've been in there on multiple occasions to buy products, cut keys, even go into their gardening/lumber section for unusual cuts of wood etc. The staff is always friendly, quick to respond to questions, seemingly very informative, I feel like I learn something every time I go in there, overall they're just very friendly. The store seems very organized, easy to maneuver around, well lit and labeled, and prices are marked on all products. I would like to believe that that is due to the very competent staff taking pride in their work, which shows. Now if you guys could just get rid of that manager LOL I think your store would be a fantastic five star location! read more

I wish there was a McLendon Hardware near my house. They always have those hard to find parts that the Big Box stores could care less about. Mclendon's is operated by people who care about the community and the world. They have just added two ELECTRIC VEHICLE charging stations to the Renton location. This is your grandpa's hardware store, with the good and the bad that comes with that. The staff is pretty darned knowledgeable. Looking to add a circuit to your breaker panel? The woman at the electrical desk is likely to be an experienced electrician. She can tell you what to do. Same with the plumbing department. If you are stuck, they can likely get you unstuck. Pretty much every department has at least one specialist who really knows their stuff. That's a fantastic thing in a hardware store. The downside is that the store seems stuck in its ways. You won't find the latest products here. Nest thermostat? No way. Go to Lowes. Smoke detectors with wireless connectivity for redundancy? Again, not here. The approach seems to be to stick with old school, proven products. Which is smart in most areas, but really frustrating with others. Still, I go here first. Then if I must, I try Home Despot or Lowes. But I don't bother asking the staff questions at those stores. Heck, even the McLendon cashiers know more than the big box staffers. read more

It's not perfect and their selection with certain things (like light bulbs) is a bit limited but in most cases I would stop here before going somewhere else. I need to come to McLendon's more because the employees here are BEYOND helpful. I came in to buy some electrical items that I did not know much about and the people here answered all my questions without being annoying or aggressive (come on, you know what I'm talking about). The best part about it is that they have a doughnut stand (Top Pot anyone?) right in front so if you're there with your spouse, partner, parent, etc - just park them in front of the mobile Top Pot stand or sit there yourself and enjoy a delicious maple bar and drip coffee while the other person shops. Just an update - after discussing the situation with the dealership, they really encouraged a talk either the store manager at McLendon. The store manager gave a gift card for the cost of the key. I guess the best they can do, given that their store policy really isn't to cut outside keys. I suppose they need better communication between the staff. Main review. Two notes. The first is that an employee (possibly store manager?) was hovering in the area and randomly pulling some of the employees aside and whispering in what appeared to be condescending tones to some of the employees. I found that rather distracting. The second is that I needed to get a new key made for my car. I wanted an original key however the dealership is unable to cut key. They sent me here to McLendon Hardware and said they should be able to cut the key and then I could get it programmed. The folks in the key area here at McLendon seemed nice enough. I'm assuming the first guy I talked to was the department manager. He mentioned since it wasn't his key he couldn't guarantee that everything would be functional. He let his "teammate" work on the key. The teammate seemed basically clueless throughout the process. Ultimately somehow they made the key uneven and with a completely different cut on one side. Needless to say the key doesn't work. And they just basically said that it's not their issue. I'm a little baffled how they could cut a key that poorly. But considering the way the teammate worked I shouldn't be surprised. Very poor experience in the key department read more

I'm new to Woodinville, and came into the store this morning for several things. They have a lot of stuff. It's crowded, with small aisles that can't fit two shopping carts going by each other. It is expensive. They have a lot of employees, most of whom were friendly and all of whom were helpful. But my criticism is something I overheard from one of the more friendly employees saying to a group of employees. They were unloading bags of garden supplies (something in a large bag - either grass seed, fertilizer or bird seed) when one of the employees pointed out that there was a hole in the bag and it was leaking. She happily said, "That's okay, let's turn it around and put the bag over here in the back. People will probably buy it anyway and won't notice. Then they'll think they did it themselves on the way home when they find the hole." The thought that went into this employee's plan to deceive customers and her happy attitude about it made my stomach turn a little. I purchased a grow light, and lo and behold, when I got home I noticed that the box had been opened before and that one of the clips that holds up the light and the instructions were missing. The thing still works, but it's inconvenient. It makes me wonder if they knew a part was missing and just put it back on the shelf hoping some sucker like me would buy it anyway. When I go to a store, I don't want to have to worry if they are trying to pawn off used or broken inventory on some poor sucker - in this case, me. I'm disappointed. read more

7/14/16 I need to update on our experience, when a problem occurred but now seems to be fixed, but first, here's the good part which I'll leave as is, then what happened afterwards. 7/13/16 Our water heater flood alarm went off last night so we decided to use McLendon's Hardware to have a new one installed because we're concerned it might start leaking more and the shut-off valve is very difficult to reach so keep that in mind if you need a new unit and be aware of where your main shut-off valve is if you have one (apartment) and not waste valuable time in an emergency. I'm writing a review because we've always liked McLendon's customer service, and because one of the managers, Ameren, gave us a senior discount, even though it's normally only on Tuesdays, and military personnel get 10% off every day. And while I'm thinking about it, sign up for emails because sometimes they have Tax-Free days I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Aside from all this, you might be helping support your local economy compared to Lowe's or Home Depot, and today I learned they have community outreach programs. And I was impressed with the way in which we got an appointment, living in Renton, with heaters in Pullayup, and who would do the store transfer in time for the plumber, so I commend Taylor who runs their home service department, and the worker who processed our information but I'm not mentioning their name because they didn't seem comfortable when I asked their permission. McLendon's also has scooters that are really fast, but you have to give your ID to customer service because too many scooters had been stolen. So overnight we learned the water was only lukewarm, had to wait until today to call, got a second callback asking if the circuit breaker tripped and it did but knowing why is important, and the person who installed the heater said the model/serial numbers can be found for insurance/warranty purposes but they must be on the opposite side so whomever comes out will need to assure us of all the concerns found online for what the problem could and when we were told the reason, that the wires can pop out and cross, then why are we now getting hot water if that's true because wouldn't the wires remain unplugged so we're disappointed being told this because it doesn't make sense, and the person who told us should know as well. Not to say you won't have a good experience because most people need a job and I don't want my feelings on the matter to unduly influence you, just be aware of potential problems and note the model/serial before installation and do research online in order to ask questions if they have to come back. And finally, another technician came out, couldn't find any problems, took a picture with his phone of the model/serial and found the warranty/instructions so it's a good experience now. read more

Not impressed with the selection or the service. I went there to buy faucets and they had very few options. Many of the options they did have were cheap knock offs. I asked the lady what makes their $40 faucets different from the $150 pfister and kohler faucets I've been looking at and she said, oh, not much difference. I questioned her further and she finally offered that they are much cheaper and you might not want to use them in your own house -- maybe in a rental. You might get lost in the shuffle at Home Depot but their selection is awesome and (if you have the time to wait for an expert to emerge) you do find people who will guide you honestly. read more

Look Pay n Pak, Ernst, Home Base and Eagles are long gone and there is still a McLendon Hardware! 40 years ago I was hired by Dorthy Thompson (Manager) who for the next 8 years was the best friend and boss that I ever had next to "Bob" my Mentor, Ted, Jan & Pat and Wanda was the sweetest smartest and kindess of all. I was raised in Hardware with my family purchasing Lake Hills Hardware in 1957 in East Bellevue where I worked after school, Saturdays and summers for 15 years! We used to tell our customers "If we don't have it you don't need it" Which also meant we can figure out a cheaper and better way for you. I miss them all, Graham (Electrician) his friend Dick Toupin (Stove pipe, visqueen) Harold O'Hara (Plumbing) and all the girls at "Counter 4" Lisa, Pam, Tammy and more! Go to McLendons and get to know the clerks, they will help you and if there having an "off" day then get another one. They aim to please. Wow what a refreshing change. Had a faulty shower compression faucet cartridge. Took it to McLendon's in Renton and the guy in plumbing not only was knowledgeable, he took it apart figured out what was wrong, got me the replacement washer and O ring and installed them for me! I could get used to this... It's now my go to hardware store! read more
