Yes, I'm a raving fan! I can't believe it's my original review dates all the way back to 2009 already. I've been here dozens of times since then and thought I'd chime in with an update. McLendon Hardware is still as good a hardware store as ever. We went in to get a few items and try to repair a hand-cart that I had bought there a while ago. With the cart I had bought, the bolts were vibrating out when driven over rough floors. Ends up, enough bolts rattled out that one of the wheels bent while the cart was loaded full. Rob went above and beyond just finding bolts to repair the cart, and was able to help me get my warranty on the cart. Additionally, Rob then advised on how to prevent the bolts from rattling out by using bolt thread-locking adhesive. It's great to see customer service that's not about just doing the minimum, but instead surprising and delighting the customer by going further. read more

Great tool selection, out of the way for me but worth the drive for a few odds and ends that I would otherwise have to order online since no one else in the area carries them! My only complaint is that the selection of various brands is lacking, they have lots of great products but not as much choice in some products (space heaters for example). However, you can always shop around for more selection and what they do carry stays in stock. Employees are knowledgeable and friendly (and easier to find help) compared to the big box stores. It's a Mom and Pop type shop with the size and selection of the larger nat'l chains. Stop by and check them out! read more

At least an hour till close you'd think if you go in the North entrance they'd announce it was closing. I'd come in it less than 10 min before. I carried 10ft wood plank and some plants to load into my car. Get there and it's locked up tight as Fort Knox no announcement, no signs as I came in. Not there first blunder of services but I'm done. Finding own price codes, unload and load your own cart of stuff. The prices are not as low as big box store but they treat you like they are one. Maybe 2 people have been very helpful at times so deserves 1 star but my thousands of $ in home renovation and yard work will not be spent here. Post note: The store says it can do better. When you think of your "neighborhood hardware store" this is exactly the place you expect in your "Pleasantville" dreams. The staff is friendly, the place is extremely well stocked, the aisles are always clear, and there are ALWAYS people on the floor waiting to help you. Not to mention the fact that they always have enough cashiers that you don't feel like you're wasting your life away in line. I have recently attended quite a few of the gardening classes and they are absolutely positively the best. They are free to the public and Robin is so informative, knowledgeable, and good-natured that she is the perfect person to go and see if you have any questions. Most weekends it also seemed like they had master gardeners there as well, and the staff alone is so nice. One person even offered to give us some of his tomatoes because they're so abundant! (How NICE is that??) Everyone here is so knowledgeable, from Copper tubing, to work tables, hand saws, miter boxes, lightbulbs (and those fantastic new LEDs), gardening, pruners, wood, etc. We've had a myriad of projects that have brought us to all corners of this place and there has almost always been someone there to help if I need it. On top of it all? They price match. We'll be back, obviously. Oh and they have Top Pot donuts outside! Ahhhh. This place is great. read more

McClendon's Hardware rocks! After things started to warm up following the recent storms, approximately 8,750 lbs of snow fell from my roof onto my front porch at approximately the same time. A fair portion of this landed on our BBQ grill. The grill itself is quite the trooper and came through this onslaught with nary a scratch. The BBQ grill cover, unfortunately, did not live to tell the tale; it was torn to shreds. Even though I am not expecting another blizzard of the same proportions for another 15 years or so, I do expect to see some rain over the next few months and, so, want to keep my grill covered. I was afraid, though, that I would not be able to find a BBQ grill cover in the middle of winter. But, then I remembered having seen a pretty full BBQ accessories section at McClendon's even after summer was over. We made the trip down there and I found my grill cover. My grill and I are very happy. We are pretty frequent customers at McClendon's. I love that there is this huge, locally-owned, store whose prices and selection compete with the big, national chains. I love their plants. We've found the staff here to be friendly and helpful and have taken advantage of a few of the many in-store classes that are offered here and found these to be informative. I'm glad to have these guys a relatively short trek from my home. read more

"Don't ask if we have it, ask us where it is!" Early on while shopping at McLendon's Hardware, i mistakenly asked one of the many employees in the store if they carried a particular product. I found that the response is usually true. They carry just about anything you could be looking for. Here is the deal. If you know you want a mass produced hardware item like an extension cord, you can probably get it cheaper at one of the national hardware store chains. but if you want to solve a problem and don't know how to do it, go to McLendon Hardware. They have so many helpful employees and a product selection much larger than any of their competitors. You may pay a little more, but you will reduce the number of trips to the hardware store for your project, which will offset the cost. read more

I enjoy the free pancake breakfast, on May 4th, we make it a go-to event every year, even though it's not the best, ( it's free so what can you expect) but it's a social event and a good reason to get plants for spring, we meet friends and have a good time. Plants are reasonable, although they are a little more expensive than some places, the quality is good. read more

McLendon's is the BEST! The staff is so helpful, the garden team so knowledgeable, and location so convenient! I always find what I need and find the selection to be large. The prices also seem to be on par or less expensive than other big box stores. I also find the layout of the store to be much more intuitive - it helps that there are maps available when you enter! I've also to a few classes here and was so pleased with the outcome. I've attended one on container gardening and a second on herb gardening. The staff was helpful and the class size was small (about 12 people per session). We each got to make a garden to take home for a small price - $25 per class. What really sets McLendon's apart is the staff. They are so considerate and helpful - willing to impart knowledge or give tips anytime. They've helped me with the smallest of projects (like the time I decided to make a purse out of a cigar box and needed a piece of balsa wood cut very specifically so I could cover it with fabric and batting) to the biggest (kitchen re-do). I honestly can't say enough good things and wouldn't consider going anywhere else. The icing on the cake is McLendon's considerable contributions to the Renton community - they are a community star! read more

A co-worker recommended this hardware store to me when our kitchen dishwashing spray hose sprung a leak. One of our faucet spindles was stripped and also needed replacing, so I looked up McLendon's online and took in both the spindle and the spray hose assembly. I brought the parts back to the Plumbing department, and what a pleasant experience! There I met Diane, who provided the best Customer Service I have ever had! Not only did she take the time to find the proper parts for me, but she also took the spray hose to the work bench and replaced the hose then and there to insure that it did indeed fit. She also answered my questions (I have no plumbing experience, by the way) and explained the proper replacement procedure for the spindle so that I would complete my project at work without losing parts. I had brought only part of the spindle assembly in, instead of removing the entire piece, so the advice was very helpful. She showed me how it worked so I understood what to do. I left the store with the proper parts in hand, and the knowledge and confidence to complete the repair. Thank you, Diane!! You made this repair a success! My father has raved about the store as long as I can remember. He is now an older man with health issues. He has been told he cannot wear a mask. He has gone into the store many times since the mask mandate and has never had an issue. Recently at the Kent store he was berated by a female employee in the paint shop for not wearing a mask. People without health issues do not understand what it is like. Many people feel the heat and difficulty breathing but it is so much worse when you are sick that it cannot be quantified in this way. To be illegally discriminated against due to health is unacceptable. And I have tried to call the corporate number without success. This may be the last time anyone in our circles try to do business with McLendon's I am very sad to say. read more

I went into a serious fugue state here. When you are used to Lowe's, Home Depot, and "independents" that are really Ace Hardware stores, a place like this rocks your socks. Prices may not be the best if you are wanting standard lumber and building supplies. If you are a tinkering / repairing type OR if you want a certain style of something and can't find it at the clone shops, this place is going to be right up your alley. McGuckin Hardware in Boulder, CO is the only other hardware store of this caliber that I know; it is probably a hair better. read more

I loved (past tense) McLendon's, but I am done. Called ahead to verify that they had what I needed. Drove a long way to get it. Arrived and was treated rude from the minute I walked in. After standing in the aisle for 15 minutes for the promised help to arrive I went to the front and asked again. "I told you......" how rude. Then I flagged down an employee who groused "I don't know, I'm in paint and walked off." "We're short handed." "You're going to have to wait like everyone else." "I don't know if we have that." Rude, rude, rude. I drive there because in the past they have everything and are polite and helpful. That's a thing of the past. Tried for OVER AN HOUR to get help and drove away for the last time, empty handed. Headed to the Tukwila Home Depot and was treated like a king. The store was enormous, far larger than most, the greeter pointed me the right direction the moment I walked in, people were helpful and polite, got everything I needed and was on the road home in 15 minutes. Place has a feel like its slipping away - wanted to buy a multi tool and wanted the good old "McLendon hardware" opinion as to what to buy because there are so many - walked in to tools - gal said she didnt work in that dept and had no idea what a multi tool was - plumbing - past the plumbing guy on way to his dept - fugured someone there was relieving him or he would be right back - so sale - stood back there for 1//2 hour waiting - so I walked to front of store (no small feat becuse the place is huge) and had someone page a plumbing guy - in fairness the guy that arrived was helpful and knowledgeable .. phone calls to store: see attached .. 1 hour and still never connected to dept ! Screw this place - I am done and they are not cheap either - McLendon - fill your customers in " what value are you bringing to this competitive arena, besides the privilege's of shopping in a Seattle landmark ? read more

While this store does have a fairly wide selection of general hardware and lumber, it is almost always over priced when comparing to other hardware stores in the area. Service-wise it is split 50/50. While the staff are fairly friendly, their knowledge base seems very limited. I'm better off consulting google before I leave the house if I have a question about something. read more

They are always trying to help, they get it. Of course you will find a bad apple at any business, sooner or later they go away. The overall treatment from Mclendon's has always been good. You get an electrician in the electrical department and a plumber in plumbing. If they dont have a answer for a problem they go out of their way to find it. Now if only McLendon featured a more wallet-friendly price in its gardening/planting/landscaping department a five star would have been given. But let's move past that...THIS McLendon's is the first McLendon's and it's huge compared to at least one of it's other locations. The reason I continue to check in?: Not only do I want to support local, I haven't spent time in any department wherein the customer service was exactly perfect. The paint department is chock full of products for refinishing that other box stores don't carry and there are plenty of name brand choices. But the paint department isn't the only department with a plethora of selection. The tool department has it's own desk and employee(s) and they have always been able to direct me in a knowledgeable way. My husband and I have come to find that McLendon's has comparable prices but their customer service is FAR superior to its competitors. As a homeowner, we still make purchases as competitors, but when it comes to a specific piece at a fair price, McLendon's is our choice. read more

This could well be the best hardware store anywhere in Western Washington. It certainly wipes the floor with Home Depot or Lowe's. But some of us oldsters will remember days before the Great McLendon Fire. The previous building was even bigger and its furthest corners had slow-moving stocks that would qualify as vintage, they had room to keep everything forever, and it was a wonderland of interesting and even discontinued items never seen in as-new condition. Do I ever miss treasure hunts in those dimly lit corners! But of course the store today still outmatches all others (including other McLendon branches). read more

I appreciate having McLendons so close to home. They are very helpful and everyone working there seems to really enjoy their job. I've come in before with some pretty unusual requests for obscure parts or supplies and they have always helped me find what I need for a fair price. My dad loves coming to McLendons because he doesn't have one as close to his house, and they are a great family-owned operation. I love buying plants and baskets there in the Spring, and after they recently renovated their front sidewalk to offer more seasonal sidewalk sales. I love the big spacious parking lot too! I can get in and out in a hurry, which is always nice! read more

I have been frequenting this home improvement store quite a bit this past year. It feels local and small business (even though it's part of a small chain) so it has it's endearing qualities. The staff in the garden section are very helpful and usually know off the top of their head if a product is available or not. They carry most major brands of soil, compost, etc. And even have my beloved cedar grove items. The plants I purchased from them survived and produced harvest (so no cheap methods of plant starting, I guess) and they have awesome vintage brand soda available! So yummy. Red cream soda is my jam. I will recommend this store (specifically Renton) to anyone that needs garden supplies or any home improvement materials. read more

I'm in process of remodeling my kitchen. You can only imagine how chaotic it can be. I went to the big box stores, Lowe's and Home Depot with no luck in finding what I was looking for. I went to McClendon's and immediately found my sink, and hardware for great price. When you walk in store you don't have to search for salesperson to help you. They knew what I wanted and patiently assisted me. It's often the small details that set stores apart. I do not know if anybody has noticed that there has been a change going on at the store since it was sold-and not for the better. Since moving here in 1981, McLendon Hardware has been my go to store for many items that the "big box" stores didn't carry. Slowly since the change of ownership, things have been disappearing. What I bought there a year ago is no longer stocked. Simple things such as a small package of composite shims, decorative acorn nuts etc. Many things have been replaced with items of unknown quality, and higher prices. Many people do not realize that companies like Moen, and Delta carry many grades of plumbing fixtures. Big box stores , and now, McLendons carry the lower quality. I now use the internet to purchase the quality items I want. I may be more expensive BUT they last longer. The staff is as friendly as always and frustrated that they no longer carry what one used to purchase there. There is a noticeable lack of staff and many that are there seem to treat you as a potential shop lifter as you search for bolts and nuts. They are also harder to find when you want to get a couple of cobalt drill bits or taps. Last night a friend confirmed my observations as he shops in the Sumner store. I suspect my favorite store is turning into another "big box" store with lower quality goods and higher prices. So, now when I want that left handed wrench, I'll add it to my list for my visits to Bellingham and true hardware store much like the old McLendons was. read more

I came to pick up an online order and have them load it into my car. When I called they said they would send someone out to help me. Mavi came out and said they do not have my order, but that I could look up the items and he would get them for me. That's when I decide to come into the store (face masks for the children is my idea of fun!). Turns out my order had just came through and Mavi was looking for me. When he found me he apologized for the inconvenience, and said he would get help for me to have someone load the large item I ordered into my car. I was relieved and said that I had one more item that I wanted to add to the order. Mavi said he would make it easy and that he would process the order and that I could just take home that extra item. He felt bad that I had to come into the store. I wish I could remember the name of the guy who helped me load the item into my car. He was very competent at loading even though he had to take a piece off to make it fit. I liked how he made sure I knew how to put it back together. I love this store. The products and the people are awesome! read more

I have been shopping regularly at Mclendon's for 5 years. I loved going to their old store. It was crowed, and had great atmosphere. Very cool. This store is very much like the "big box stores". Not nearly as old family. They have a good selection of just about everything. Especially hardware, and building materials. I find that their plant selection is good when it first comes in, but they don't take care of it. All in all it is a great store to go shopping in. read more

I bought some middle grade cedar siding after seeing their display. The display was at the lumber desk and showed the three grades of cedar siding that they carry. When I went to the lumberyard to pick it up I realized that the cedar that I would get bore no resemblance to the displayed wood! Their so-called middle grade was just crap wood. Nothing like the display. It was the WORST grade of fencing and, in fact, Their best grade wood was terrible! I went to Lowes and bought their CHEAPEST cedar fencing at nearly half the price and got better quality than McLendons best. Since McLendons got sold to an out of state owner they have lost some of their best employees and some of the replacements seem to have little, or no hardware experience or expertise! Their stock has suffered too. The 2 stars that I gave them represent their one good point. . . the very helpful people at the check out stations. read more

Absolutely Furious. I emailed this store about duplicating a programmable key for me. The Puyallup store called me at my home and had about a ten minute conversation about the key. Turns out they have 3 in stock, cost is 85 bucks, please bring the vehicle so the key can be tested before you leave. I was so happy. I drive the hundred miles round trip to get the key. When I get there a lady behind the counter tells me they cant do it. I tell her she can. She calls Manager. Manager tells me they cant. Well crap, the reviews about how terrible this place has become are true. And that old lady behind the counter at the key station, she isn't doing the store any favors, she kept putting her two cents in even after calling the manager. What a shame, another western Washington company has become indifferent to their customers. Bottom line, go somewhere else, They will not honor even their own invitations. read more

This is the second time in a week I have tried this store. The first time the staff were no where to be found and the few available had zero product knowledge or awareness. I tried to go back today for a second chance and they blew it again. The only staff I saw on the floor was stocking tools while I patiently waited to ask a question....zero acknowledgement. IMO, if you are in need of a bit more specialty hardware/fasteners and can't get to Tacomascrews then Mclendon Hardware is your spot. I'm a wrench head, to a certain degree, and these damn imports I own always use metric bolts. Home dept and Lowe's is a far cry if you need anything metric. They only stock what is on the shelf. But here at Mclendon's, they have all sizes in stock and can be purchased by the box load. They are a time saver when I need 30+ metric hardware. read more
