This places was soo unique! When I travel I love to find a good cigar lounge and they can be tough to find. We went first to the Bagdad Theater restaurant and they recommended since we have the passport for McMenamins to try a few other places as well, this was one. They also had the tall windows that swivel open on a nice day so you can open up the lounge to their patio seating that had a very nice bistro feel outside with their beautiful jazz music playing. You can also order food here as well. The cigar had vanilla flavors and was very smooth. The server was there just not as attentive as I think one should be but it's all opinion. Definitely a nice little relax and conversational spot for light and easy feel. read more

Indoor or outdoor seating is available (depending on the fickle PNW weather) at one of the handful of tables and benches. Despite it's size, Greater Trumps is both cozy and roomy. The quaint bar offers a surprisingly large selection of drinks, most of which use McMenamins brand liquors as the base, but they would be remiss if they didn't have a healthy selection of scotch for the discerning smoker (fortunately, they do). Greater Trumps is a step back in time. A time of prohibition, the roaring Twenties, early Jazz music and one bartender that does it all. When that place is maybe 3-400 square feet (I'm not off by much) said bartender has no choice. She was chief, cook and bottle washer, and coffee maker. This is a place to sit and enjoy a cigar or a pipe, slosh around a good bourbon or whiskey and play a game of cards or dominos. You can chat with the neighbors and even notice a gentleman studying Tarot cards. Dark lighting, cigar wrappers gracing the picture frames and a bathroom so small, the sink was outside in the main area. It was cool, it was kitch and it was unique. I will admit on the day after the "big snow" of 2014, it was hotter than hell in there. They needed to crack the door open but the smoke-eaters were doing the job they were suppose to do. They do serve some food, but I have no clue where the "kitchen" was. I did say this place was SMALL. It is a great place to relax with a friend or two, not a whole party because you won't fit in the door. But a neat experience. read more

Pleasant surprise to find this place close to our Airbnb. I followed the map on Yelp but you need to go down a couple stores off Hawthorne to find the place. They have a full bar with nice bourbon and scotch selection. The day I was here they had a nice selection of My Father cigars which happen to be one of my favorites. I ended up getting a local IPA to accompany my cigar. They have small plates of food if you are hungry. Great way to kill an hour on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. read more

Service is without a smile and most unfriendly. Ambience is great. On this day the windows which were the full length of the bar were opened and it was a great feeling, reminded me of North Beach bars in San Francisco. It was my First Time going in to Greater Trumps, which is a McMenamins establishment,.... I went in for a Very Taaasty Mint Mojito. It was Deeelicious. I headed towards New Seasons after this... so... I didn't Drink it all. I had just enough to know it's Very Taaasty! I think the Bartendress had recently gotten her haircut and colored, as well. The Bar has a Copper Top. The People who constructed it wrapped the Copper around the sides as well. It looked Very Professional. I wonder when that was put in? I sat in a Booth by myself ... there's not much room to sit at the Bar. There are Four Barstools in total. Today, two of the seats were occupied by other people. After reading the Bar Menu,... they have " Scooby Snacks " listed... I plan to go back and try a few items sometime in the Future. read more

My friends and I started visiting Greater Trumps in 1995. I am happy to say it hasn't changed much since then. As far as I can tell the decor has shifted a bit, but almost imperceptibly. There is a quote from Charles Williams painted on the wall a giant frog near the ceiling, and the same booths and tables as always. For years the greater trumps has specialized in two things providing a place to smoke cigars and try lots of different ports. They offer a full bar and many beers and food from the Baghdad next door as well, but cigars and port are the focus. It is a dark moody space with an aura of mystery and intellectualism about it. It is not a "swanky" cigar bar. My friends and I tend to have philosophical talks there that don't seem to come up anyplace else. With the new smoking ban McMenamins applied for and received clearance for Trumps to remain a cigar bar. The only thing officially allowed to be smoked inside now are cigars. I think the occasional pipe may not be noticed but they do have to be strict on cigarettes... no cigarettes, but OK for cigars. seems silly to me, but that is the rules Tonight had a nice port, watched my friend smoke a fancy cigar and discussed the veracity of religion, and the priority of individualism Good times! read more

Have I ever mentioned that The Big Man is from Miami Beach, loves cigars, and playing dominoes?? No, he's not an elder Cuban exile. He is a fan of dark, smokey, slightly mysterious bars. He likes the occasional high quality cigar, and he enjoys a tasty beverage with said smoke. I do not begrudge him any of this. I actually enjoy coming along on his Sunday afternoon swings by Greater Trumps, as long as I get to have a delicious Sidecar! He always brings the Sunday New York Times, despite the fact that it is too dark to read a darn thing, as far as I can tell. We sit in a booth, in the back, in a corner, in the dark (are any Yelpers even old enough to remember that song lyric?!), He orders some sort of frosty McMennamins' beer or ale, I have my Sidecar made with fresh juice, and then he purchases the cigar...it's a ritual. I fear this will soon go by the wayside due to the new smoking laws soon to be enacted in Oregon. I don't mind a cigar, and I actually relish the scent of good pipe tobacco. It's the cancer sticks I cannot abide, and for this egregious habit, I am thankful for the new law. This will, however, put a damper of our late Sunday afternoon ritual, so adaptation will be in order. I hope Greater Trumps can figure this out, tho' I am sure they will come up with some inventive plan. For those who do not enjoy a cigar, food is available from The Baghdad Theater. It's only fair-to-middlin', as most food offerings from McMennamins' seem to be. Why can't they put as much time into their food quality as they do their cool & atmospheric places?? Anyway, for not much cash-o-la a swell time can be had! If they had a tiny bit more light & some tastier food, this would be a 5 star spot for me, without question. Try it before January 1, if you're so inclined for the old fashioned trifecta of drink, smoke, and darkness (but zero sleeze-factor). read more

Amazing place and all the more being in progressive-villa Hawthorne district that with 50 non-smoke lounges nearby around here (people would still complain of the one cigar lounge-go figure -don't ya love Portland!! Regardless a great place!!! Old dark wood , old cigar and tobacco signs on wall-well ventilated for non-smokers as windows pull back for ventilation. Great selection of fine whiskeys including I believe all of Macs distilled libations which are all quite nice. Limited Macs Micros but cheap Hamms available for penny pinchers. Maybe I wasn't there to smoke a cigar. Maybe it was raining and I was a little soggy, but I think there have to be worse reasons for a waitress to treat you like a measly pile of...(well you know what). In Greater Trump's defense, I was not there to smoke a cigar, but happened upon this lovely little nook during a Portland down pour with some friends and hoping to catch up and relax over a drink. If you smoke cigars, I could see this being a fabulous establishment. The cozy and relaxing vibe, an open outside wall facing the street with heat lamps and blankets to keep you warm against the Portland chill while you enjoy your cigar, fabulous idea! Greater Trumps also offers a small bar-food menu and drinks. I was not impressed by the service, and it's true, perhaps our waitress had reason for her rude-ness (a very large wedgie?), but I was so hungry from being table neglected I nearly ate a coaster. If you are looking for a cool, unique place to smoke cigars while having drinks I recommend Greater Trumps; if you are looking for a nice place to have a drink and light snacks and, don't enjoy rudeness nor eating coasters...I would advise against it. read more

Greater Trumps is a McMenamin's owned establishment; therefore the beer and wine selection is not the greatest as a general rule. This is something of a cigar bar. On that front, it appears to be great for this purpose. I'm not an enormous fan of cigars, but I will enjoy one from time to time. Further, I happen to enjoy the atmosphere of cigar lounges because they are usually pretty laid back interesting places and I seem to just about enjoy the lingering cigar flavor in the air as part of the ambiance. While I'm sure that, in this day and age, many people actively avoid places like this due to the smoke, I believe it is possible for non-hardcore cigar smokers to enjoy cigar lounges without actually smoking a single cigar. So, I am of the view that, all types of people have the right review this business how they see fit. In reality, if you are a business and you have more than one option and you have more than one type of customer, you are likely going to be judged on the entirety of your business as whole rather than one small aspect that you don't even directly charge for. Beyond Cigars. The ambiance is pretty great. The street view is a plus, and they have heaters that they use often. The lighting is delightfully dim, people go there to play chess or cards, have interesting conversations, etc. It is in my view how most places should be, but for some reason aren't. In the end, I think every related business in town should learn something from Greater Trumps. Even if it is a McMenamin's it seems to be the most 'real' of the lot where others feel like sterile Disneyland. The bar selection is great. The ports on hand are standard but great. The juices are slightly overpriced but of a high quality. The food selections are standard McMenamins, but wait - they have a great happy hour deal on basic food items such as burgers and tots and fries. So, depending on the hour, the place can also be great on value. In the end, I'm going to give it 4 stars and yet somehow I feel pretty confident that it's not going to close anytime soon. I will also probably go back there from time to time because it's a pretty decent place, certainly the only McMenamin's I'd actually frequent in the southeast area. read more

I am a sucker for Mcmenamins. Any of 'em. I love their beer, their food. Any place serving up tots has a leg up. I used to be a regular bar fly at the Backstage, part of the Baghdad complex and have also been known to fly around Greater Trumps. Greater Trumps is a quaint little hole in the wall, almost literally. The small atmosphere can sometimes be annoying, but then why the hell did you come. what did you expect? The place still serves cigars, which can be smoked inside *gasp* but cigar-ette smokers have to step outside. Most of the bar staff are polite and friendly, a few of them do serve up some sass with the beer. The ports and wines are fine, though i usually hit the taps. One of the best things about trumps is the Monday Night Trivia Night. The friendly host is excellent about the wide range of questions. The rivalries are always friendly and the prize is a free round....so cha ching! Anyways, all in all...its a great spot. Sat on the patio to people watch while enjoying a delicious salad and Apricot beer. I could have had a second helping of salad, it was so good! The staff was laid back and friendly.
