So for starters just not a big fan of McMillan's food.. Never have been. It's the ruby I love. (Beer). But I always Get the tots and a burger because they serve Portland catch. For those of you that have had Portland ketchup know the difference. Try a bottle of you ever see it! ( They carry it at whole Foods). So tonight got my Ruby, burger, tots and the bottle of that awesome Portland ketchup... But something was wrong! Did not taste right!! So I asked the server.. And she went back to check what the big tub was that they were using to refill the ketchup bottles.. She very honestly told me it was Heinz ketchup! What the heck?? I was right.. I am posting this review 18 months after the event in question occurred because I'm still pissed about it, it has been sitting in my drafts folder all this time. Last week I called and made reservations for a party of 12 for my 30th birthday for 1:30 on Sunday. When we showed up our table was not ready. The gal that helped us said they just needed to push together a few tables-the place was only 1/2 full. My group including my 93 year old grandmother and 1 year old nephew continued to wait. After checking in a few more time there was no progress. At about 2:05 my Aunt suggested we go somewhere else. My husband informed the hostess we were leaving at about 2:15. No apologies or explanation. I am very disappointed to be treated so poorly by a company I have supported over the years. My husband and I were married at Edgefield in 2006. Frankly this experience makes me hesitate to plan any special event with any McMenamins location in the future. I was embarrassed and stressed out on a day that should have been festive and fun. I emailed the manager so they would know what is going on in their restaurant and they sent a $50 gift card- gee thanks. read more

I'm going to give them a 4-star review because we stayed the night and the dinner service was stellar. We had a huge table of almost 15 people and our server was amazing, keeping everyone's drinks refilled and bellies full. The restaurant was operating at full capacity also, so whomever managed the dinner service team... kudos. Now, the morning service... oy. Not so great. The server was all over the place, she was the interrupting-impatient-kind. Look.. I get it, it's the morning (not a morning person)... But chill, it's Sunday and I'm on my weekend away. I normally love McMenamins - especially Kennedy School. Both times I have been to Grand Lodge though, it has been atrocious. Last time we went, here is the brief version of what happened: We went to the outdoor area and asked a waiter if we should just seat ourselves outside, they replied yes and handed us menus. After waiting and watching several servers walk by, I finally called one over only to be told quite rudely that they were no longer serving the outdoor area. Nice to have been told that in the first place. We moved inside where we again waited forever for a server. We finally ordered and then sat while our food never showed up. I finally went up to the bar to order another drink and asked about our food. Turns out our server had "forgotten" about it and when the bartender brought it to us, it was all cold and dried out from sitting around so long. My other experience here wasn't much better. It's a shame that a place with so much potential is in the hands of such a worthless franchise. The service like all Mcmenamins is horrible, all the bartenders are slow and act like it is their first time pouring a beer or a drink. That wouldn't be so bad, if they were nice, but everyone acted like I was interrupting their other work even when i was the only one ordering. Maybe if they hired a real bartender and wait staff this place could be cool. The crowd that hangs out there is another problem. It really just represents all the people that felt like they were too good to go to a bar with a smoking section. Guys with their big trucks trying to prove their manhood by drinking strong beer like it is budweiser. It would be one thing if they had great beer of food, but none of their beer is that great and the only thing worth ordering is a burger which you can get anywhere. Their staff and the people would be the only reason to hang out their and they have failed miserably. If I had to hang at one Mcmenamins I would say Edgefield would be win by default. It is not great but the lesser of many evils and for seems easier to escape, but I hope I am never really forced to make that decision again read more

The ingredients are clearly excellent, but the service is inconsistent. A significant portion is clearly the coordination and communication between the kitchen and front of house. Dinner: We ordered the Thai sweet potato appetizer. It never showed up. The fresh, wild salmon we were both craving was overcooked to leather and the meals were not even hot when they arrived. When they came back, the food was hot, but apparently the cooks have no respect for salmon, because it was still WAY overcooked, just not quite leathery and if the salmon has been seasoned, it was only telepathically. The rest of the plate was delicious, but who wants to pay for ruined salmon? The bread pudding was excellent, but my family had already left me alone to pay the bill because they were unhappy with their meals (and eager to get in the soaking pool). Breakfast: the menu looked promising, but again the service was sub-par. The homemade corn beef hash was excellent, if under seasoned again, but it arrived cold except for the eggs, which were lukewarm, and my wife's breakfast never arrived. We canceled her order when we were ready to leave and the waiter never checked in or gave us the opportunity to ask why the order had not arrived until then. In both cases, we arrived early for service because we have 2 kids and wanted to avoid the crush. By the time we left, it was crushed, and obviously popular. We were there WAY longer than should have been necessary. The service didn't check in very often, and while they were embarrassed at the gaffs, and comped us without prompting, they never did any of the simple things that they could have done to either minimize the kitchen incompetence or find out if things were ok. In conclusion, I really still want to like this place.. The atmosphere is great, the ingredients show care of selection, but the service and most particularly the kitchen are clearly missing a beat. read more

Update: The Grand Lodge has added High Pasta back to their menu. HOWEVER, they are making it with penne pasta rather than with linguini. Fail. Update: The Grand Lodge has taken the crab cakes and crab cake sandwich off of their menu. This was the ONLY thing that I loved there!!!!! Fail. The restaurant at this location was not bad. I had a hamburger with the handcut fries. I really like their fries and the burger (made from natural raised beef) was good too. They offer pizza, but I haven't tried it yet. They also have a hotel, hot tub and movie theater at this location. Great place for lunch or dinner. Love most decor at McMenamin restaurants. The bathrooms for the men's room are so tiny you have to step over the toilet to close the door. I order the captain neon done with a side of blue cheese for my tater tots and my wife ordered the lamb. No blue cheese on the burger only a side of blue cheese you would think I would have just ordered the bacon burger or a cheese burger at the price point, done doesn't mean drink a gallon of water with every bite plus it was luke warm. The lamb also very very over cooked. Waitress was nice though. Honestly I would not here at this price point. read more

Wanted to update this review because Mathea from McMenamins contacted me and made things right hoping we would come and give it another try. Things were better right off the bat. Aaron was our server he made suggestions on cocktails and had great menu knowledge helping us get dinner as soon as it was available. He even returned to fill water without us having to ask. We had the ribeye with mashed potatoes and veggies. Everything was very hot and delicious! We were checked on often and extremely pleased with the service and food this time around. Thank you Mathea and Aaron for making our experience awesome, and making things right. The experience was spectacular if what you are after is room temp food and slow service. Our drinks were rarely refilled unless we asked. The place wasn't packed yet our server kept disappearing. The prime rib was an atrocity. It's either frozen at some point or the cook who makes it should be replaced with a microwave. The rest of our food should have been hotter. Overall this was completely overpriced even if it was half priced. Not likely to ever come back. read more

Oof! Small parking lot, but I managed to find a space closer to the exit. We were supposed to have a reservation for 13, but it wasn't officialized :( on a Friday night, I thought we'd be in trouble because the place was pretty busy! Luckily, our hostess was able to accommodate our party with just 10 minutes of waiting. The noms: I had the Oktoberfest plate. The mashed potatoes were a little dry, but the buttery caramelized cabbage made up for it. We've been here many times and usually the food's pretty good and the service is okay. That's until we tried to come on a Monday night... Service was really slow - we waited 20 minutes just for water in tiny glasses that were rapidly emptied (and not refilled). Even the food was off its game - my burger was not well built, and my wife's plank smoked salmon was lacking - there was barely any cranberry butter on it. My bar order also wasn't filled correctly and took way too long. I heard our server helping another table where she got all of their beer orders completely wrong. The only thing that was okay was my son's pizza, which frankly isn't hard. My best advice would be to come on a Friday or Saturday night when their A-Game people are working and not come at any other time when the bench warmers take the field. read more

We just returned from 2 nights at the Grand Lodge. Had dinner there twice and breakfast twice. Food was very good. The halibut fish and chips were our favorites. Had omelets for breakfast and were great. Service was friendly and efficient. Only negative was they brought a regular crust pizza for our son instead of a gluten free crust. The server made it right though and apologized several times for the error. The attic room we stayed in was great. We loved finding all of the secret rooms and passage ways. read more

This review is ONLY regarding the restaurant. The hotel / place is very interesting and eclectic and I'm sure it has enough pop to drive a great review. We had excellent service from our waiter. He was super responsive and on point, with magnificent communication skills and knowledge. Where they fell short was the food. Both our salads were SWIMMING in dressing, which ruined the salad. For those on a diet this was a dead kill. They hid it underneath the salad and you don't realize it until it's too late. I should have sent it back but it was undetectable and made the remainer of the salad was super coated. Very disappointed. My other fellow diners ordered typical Americano Food (hot wings, hamburgers / pizza) and they had no complaints. Beware the salad. Going to cautiously upgrade my 2 star review to a 3 star one. I was in the area doing some wedding venue research and stayed at the Grand Lodge again. Having driven down from Seattle in a crazy storm that morning and then spending all day driving around looking at wedding locales, I was completely exhausted and not in the mood to drive out to find food. So I decided to give the Ironwork Grill one more chance. I must admit that it was definitely a better experience than my previous one. The food still took forever and a day but the service was markedly better and the food was better as well. Granted, I didn't get the same thing (they seem to have changed their menu recently too) but it was pretty good. The SO also thought his was much better this time around. Was it perfect? No. They didn't have any mint for a mojito and like I said, it took forever to get our food (they actually comp'd the meal to the people seated near us since it took so long) but it was a vast improvement over our last visit. I think the biggest difference overall was the service. Last time I felt like I had to literally tackle someone to get attention and this time our server was super attentive and friendly. Since my entire family is staying at the Grand Lodge in April for my wedding I probably can't avoid eating there again so I guess I'll give it the good ole two out of three next time I am there. read more

What a fantastic place and awesome burgers! My husband and I had the communication breakdown burgers (Tillamook cheese, bacon, mushrooms, red peppers & the works - No onion though) - - I had tator tots and he had French fries. Our Uncle got the fish n chips, and our Aunt got the bacon cheeseburger (with the works) And all of us had nothing to complain about! Our server was very kind and knowledgeable about the specials and was quite on her toes zooming from table to table to make sure all guests were taken care of. It is a bit of a quirky, dark place. You don't go here for the food. The food is average at best. The kids menu is terrible. Their cheeseburger kids meal is one tiny slider that doesn't even fill up my 3 year one daughters. My third year here attending a Renaissance fair on the grounds. Wait staff was very attentive but that's the end of the positives. We were shocked to see $15 hamburgers. Skip that and go for a humus plate appetizer ? - also $15. If these were amazing dishes - I wouldn't mind but it is fair to middling bar food. I'm kind of shocked by the negativity towards this place. The building is old and that is something that is a bonus to me. Great character, well maintained and decorated. They clearly employed a lot of artists on the remodel. We had both dinner and breakfast here. Beer is ok by Portland standards, which means excellent by American standards. Food and service were very good and affordable. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't expensive either. Compared to typical restaurants in most american hotels the food is better, cheaper, and the atmosphere is way more interesting. read more

McMenamins Ironwork Grill is A-OK. As always the décor is the best part of any McMenamins. It's comfortable, interesting, and there really isn't a bad view no matter where you are seated. The food is solid average McMenamins food. It is good quality, plain tasting food at higher prices. I figure I'm paying for the fun of being at a McMenamins rather than just the food on my plate. Our party of 4 ordered a couple of burgers, a special of the day croissant sandwich with shrimp and a crème brulee. I ordered the Dungeon (I think) it was grass fed beef on Grand Central Brioche bun with Swiss and Mushrooms, side salad of fresh greens with blue cheese for $12 or $13. It was served in a timely manner, although the dressing was missing, no big deal. It all tasted fine but boring. No condiments were offered and none were on the burger. My friend loved her crème brulee. McMenamins is happy to provide separate checks. read more

OK - I should have known better...this is McMenamins and well, er, they aren't known for their good service. But, a visit this past Monday takes the cake. We took our 2 kids there for dinner. We first sat down in the back patio...and after 10 minutes without any server approaching us thought that we should move to the main restaurant because the kids were hungry and impatient. We sat down near the kitchen and a server did stop by and say hello. 5 minutes went by. 10 minutes went by. 15 minutes went by. No one still had stopped by even though people were frantically running back & forth to the kitchen. We tried to get a few people's attention, but without luck. After 30 minutes, we got up & walked out. On the way out we passed 3 servers just standing around & chatting (even though clearly there were lots of people waiting on things)...they saw us leave & didn't even ask us why. I have no idea where the manager on duty was...probably the reason that the servers were not really working. I think it will be a LONG time before I consider going back to this place. read more

Went there last night 5/5/16. It has been some time since I had been to the Forest Grove Ironwork Grill. The service was the best I have had there so that was a good thing. My only reason for giving it 2 stars is cost. I was there with my 16 year old daughter and for 2 burgers and 2 ice teas it was over $30.00 not including tip.
