In general, McMenamins is one of the most innovative full service restaurant chains out there. No two are alike, and all of the ones I've been to (10 or more) are charming and incredibly well done, with dark wood, comfortable lighting, good food (nothing fancy, but way better with more variety than the typical tavern). They all feature a long list of draft beers, a full bar, and great friendly service. They brew their own beer and distill a number of spirits. Their Rock Creek Tavern is a gem. It's an enormous cabin-style building, with high ceilings, large weathered beams, comfortable seating (upstairs, downstairs, outside and at a long wooden bar). There's a large fireplace, and a giant wood fired stove in the rear that they fire up on cold days. Check out their rare giant mushroom lamps and long list of eclectic objects on the walls or hanging from the rafters. The Rock Creek Tavern is a short drive north of Hillsboro, OR, on a quiet stretch of NW Old Cornelius Pass Road (a northwest offshoot of the much busier Cornelius Pass Road). This is by far my favorite McMenamins location... definitely the standout among the freestanding options that are non-hotel properties. A bit out of the way from the city, but undeniably worth the journey. The open floor plan is amazing to create a warm and welcoming environment. However, noise carries a lot because of the layout. The fireplace downstairs is such a lovely presence... and the artwork/decor is amazing. Standard pub fare that is mostly what you would expect from a McMenamins. Cajun tots, burgers, salads, sandwiches and fresh beer. Try the Ruby if you can't decide what you drink... you can thank me later. Service is good but not great. That's not unique to this location; it's part of the McMenamins experience. However, the ambiance and old woodsman tavern flairs make this one worth the trip. read more

This is one of my favorite McMenamins locations! There is lots of parking and tons of room inside. The staff looked stretched to the hilt! We wanted to sit upstairs and the team said that was fine, but we would have to order at the bar downstairs and bring our drinks up ourselves. I got some blackberry ciders and some waters and we sat on the quiet patio that looked out over the chicken coops. It's a perfect spot when the weather is right. I got my sister into the McMenamins passport. It's been over 5 years for her on her current passport because she works a lot and don't go out to McMenamins very often. We were taking a water color painting class at a nearby winery. Before heading to the class, I asked if she had the stamp for the Rock Creek location and she didn't have it. I suggested that we go there for dinner after our class. Rock Creek was the last stamp for the West side locations. At the other locations, we've always been able to redeem the prize as soon as the last stamp was collected. The server told my sister she could redeem her burger prize on her next visit. I was surprised by this. Like I said, she doesn't frequent McMenamins very often, though we are planning road trips to some of the other locations. I hope the far locations are of the mindset of letting us redeem after last stamp! Also, 2 burgers, I had the vegan mystic burger with a salad as my side, my sister got a regular cheeseburger, she chose the cream of artichoke soup as her side. We both got an iced tea. Our check came to over $50, rather spendy. The restaurant was pretty dark, we had to use our phone flashlight to read the menu. We sat close to the wood stove which was nice and warm, but the chairs were wood and hard. Server was friendly and efficient. Before the crowds this was the spot. the fireplace going, the old lodge feel was just perfect. it is more difficult now to get a table, even more so near the fire. but it is still a great go to for a wonderful, warm, down home dinner. If you challenge yourself with one of their large filling burgers, don't forget the Cajun tots. done just right. not overly relying on spice, but letting the flavors do the heavy lifting. Rock Creek Tavern is one of the many McMenamins locations surrounding the Portland metro area. This one is way far out from the city but the more remote location adds to the charm of the place. The restaurant is in a barn but it isn't the original building. The original burned down and so it was rebuilt to the same detail as the original. Very atmospheric here and love the mushroom decor and themes that they have going on here. I didn't miss the chance to get the seasonal Black Widow Porter which is typically only available in October and once again had their delicious Dill Tuna Fish Sandwich. The upstairs is really cool as the mushroom theme continues and on nicer days you can eat outside from the upper floor. read more

We came here years ago...on multiple occasions simply for the ambiance. This place is way too cool for school. However, besides good beer, there wasn't much going for it, especially since it was so far outside the city limits. The years go by as if they were days and one day we go to another McMenamin's and the food is infinitely better! They've done some moving and shaking there through the last few years and I'm thoroughly impressed with the food...making this my absolute favorite location in the entire empire. I can say this because we are working through a Passport and have been to nearly all of the properties now...there are some great locations...this being one of the best! Had a table reserved for 10 people. It was dark and quiet ambiance, when we first sat down it took 15 mins to order drinks. After ordering drinks, it took over 40 mins to get our food. I ordered the cheesesteak and it was an average cheesesteak, 6/10. I would probably choose a different restaurant next time. read more

Here from out of town. The restaurant was practically empty. Three tables with people. We were sat. Never given water. Tried multiple times to get one of the two waiters attention. Walked out after 20 minutes. They saw us leaving and we told them why and they both looked at each other and said-I thought you had them. We came here because we like the overall cozy atmosphere, but there's some major concerns that will cause us to not come back. Our family has been here twice in the past few months, once with outdoor seating and the other indoor. While sitting outdoors, we had a waft of really nasty sewage smell blowing over into our area, and we were not encouraged to find that coming back months later that it still smelled the same outside. Pretty unappetizing. While sitting indoors we sat in a cozy nook, and while we were asked if we wanted to sit there, we were happy to do so as we were next to the wood stove, but throughout the time, with temperatures near freezing outside, the draft from the outside kept overtaking us from the side door opening over and over again as we sat waiting for our meal. The door would automatically prop open and we would have to stand up and go close it. Then the food was subpar, the $22 fish and chips meal had two very small pieces of fish and a huge plate of French fries that tasted frozen and like cardboard. The fish seemed like it was also frozen prior to frying. For the amount of money we paid, we've had better success with good food at food trucks. I had a pulled pork sandwich and the sauce wasn't my favorite, a little too sweet, but the tots were fried fine. Our tab for two meals, two kids meals and soft drinks was about $90, and I can think of many other places to eat for less than that and get better food. read more

Three of us went on a Sunday night for dinner, we had been here before but it had been awhile. It has always been a unique place with an interesting look to it, very rustic and big. There are 2 sections the main floor with a couple of levels and an upstairs area (very steep stairs). We weren't looking for anything special but they did have a couple of guys playing Irish music, violin and guitar, they were ok but a bit loud if you wanted to talk. The place was very busy and seemed to be understaffed as service was slow and spotty. We all had burgers and fries, one was a veggie version. Both the meat burgers were way over done and actually burnt and crunchy on the edges. I only ate about half of a half and my wife ate about the same on hers. Our fries and tots were cold and not very good. We ordered a starter of onion rings and they came out sort of warm but there was only a total of 9 small onion rings and 2 glops of onion covered in batter but not very chewable. The worst thing about them was for this very small not very good side it was $14, crazy! you can get a heaping plate full of hot crispy, tasty rings at the Ringside for $12 what the heck are they thinking? The veggie burger was ok but she asked for some extra pickles and she was charged $1.25 for what turned out to be 5 pickles, they had 3 pickles on the regular burger so it worked out to $1.25 for 2 pickles, WOW! As I said they must be understaffed because our waiter, a nice guy named Conner was running all over the place and trying to take care of a large part of the downstairs so other than when he took the order and later delivered the food it was about all we saw of him. I finally waved him down for the check and a couple of boxes ( our dogs don't care if there burger is too well done). He never asked how the food was and why we hadn't eaten much of it, so did not get a chance to tell him. I noticed that they have a very small kitchen and it was really hopping so maybe it was just an off night but we probably won't be going back anytime soon. read more

On a rainy cold night relaxing by the fire or sitting by the pot belly stove with a hot buttered rum are priceless moments. On a warm summer night sitting outside with a cold cider or fun cocktail make my day. Sitting outside by the fire or by the portable heaters on a cool night keeps me warm as we enjoy the fresh air at this off the beat location. The decor is awesome with so much to look at surrounding you giving you a warm comforting feeling. We have caught occasional live music nights and really enjoyed it as well as other nights we seek a quieter relaxing evening. The second floor has Moore seating and some shuffle board games. Prices have creeped up over the years and spiked especially after the pandemic. The Cajun tots are always a must starter with the peppercorn ranch along with a seasonal choice. The bayou salad is my favorite or just a pub salad add blue cheese crumbles. This will continue to be our go to hide away spot. read more

The ambience here is amazing. It's a great setting, and has the kind of adornment that you'd expect on the walls of a McMenamins. Unfortunately that's where things stop being fun. The price no longer is worthy for the food. The fries which used to be hand-cut, now seem to be frozen. A burger shouldn't be $19, but it is. Scooby snacks 9.2/10 they were alittle burnt but otherwise delish with mustard and ketchup. Pretzel sticks. Pretzel sticks and fondue came cold so we asked it to be heated and i felt the fondue was not flavorful but my partner enjoyed them and rated them 6/10. Cajun tater tots. Absolutely delicious 10/10 perfect flavor ranch was great. Then... the burger. This was my partners burger no veggies and double patty. and it was VERY pink. we told the waiter she was apologetic and got us a new one however the new one had veggies and no double patty so we asked for the double patty to be taken off since we didn't get it. Mackenzie was great it seemed like she was working by herself but she was still able to check on us timely and was very nice to us the whole time! You'd think people are joking when Mcmenamins has a reputation for slow service. When we arrived, we waited for a host. Finally someone came. Despite a lot of tables being open inside and outside, we were told there was a 15-20 minute wait. Got it, you are understaffed. We finally got seated. Our server took 10 minutes to bring a drink menu, then another 10 to come back so we could order drinks. Then took another table's food order first. We didn't get silverware. We didn't get refills on water (we asked). We waited what felt like 40+ minutes for food that came out barely luke warm. One of the beers ran out during a refill. She brought the half full pint to see if our friend wanted it and then said would bring him something else. He didn't like the beer, didn't drink it. Was still charged. We were there for over 2 hours just to have dinner and one drink. Exhausting slow experience. Do not recommend this location. Only giving a second star because my husband liked his burger and I enjoyed my beer. My food was mediocre. read more

My cousin refers to McMenamins Yelp pages as "their defense mechanism": It's their means of placating their perpetually disgruntled, dissatisfied West Side patrons who, despite seemingly loathing the experience, keep packing locations like this one. I'm going to make an observation: Everything that's wrong about this location is their hick, hayseed, plowboy, backwater, near-fossilized clientele's fault. From the geniuses who keep pulling into the tiny dirt lot in their extended cab dualies to the brain geniuses who are shocked that they can't be immediately seated at 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday and have to have a drink at the bar, where the gaggle of minors they brought with them (for reasons unknown) can't be served. Otherwise, a McMenamin's is always what you expect: It's a full tap list with some notable favorites and about eight beers they rotate in and out. It's a decent cider selection and constantly improving cocktail list, and it's a food menu filled with staples and a few surprises the location's chef throws in to aid with post-Covid survival. For the most part, people have their cajun tots, communication breakdown burger, Terminator or Ruby, enjoy the fireplace, the Hippo Hardware fixtures, the antique signs and the Grateful Dead decor beside the country road. They might even sit at the deck and marvel at the moss that's made the place look as if it has a thatch roof. But McMenamins' sworn enemies--the folks who've plagued it throughout its existence--are the overall-wearing slobs who walk through the door and decide they're suddenly the head critic for Food & Wine. Each server is a servant, each dish a potential insult. They walk in with their lottery-bar budget and expect the world to be laid at their table. When it isn't, and they're treated like the assholes they are, they have a tantrum about it online and take it out on the servers, bartenders and cooks who haven't done anything out of the McMenamins ordinary. I have absolutely loved this location since the family moved out to this corner of nowhere more than a decade ago and I've spent post-Christmas dinners, peach-picking days, wine-touring afternoons, tree-fetching weekends and long summer nights here enjoying many of the features these people seem to love to bitch about. How do you have time to care about cole slaw? It's basically a garnish. Most people don't even eat it! I give the Rock Creek crew a lot of credit for putting up with not only the area's tourists (of which I was basically one for many years), but the local Hee-Haw cast that carpet bombs the place with complaints. The service here has always been tremendous, especially if you go into it with eyes open and realize that a packed house likely means slower goings. Enjoy your beverage, enjoy the conversation and, if you don't enjoy either, don't take it out on the person who's preparing three tables' worth of food ahead of yours. read more

McMenamin's Rock Creek Tavern is a little out of the way, but totally worth the drive! Stumbling onto this moss-covered cabin in the "woods" (despite being alongside a country highway) felt like discovering a woodsman's longhouse from the early 20th century, or walking into The Green Dragon from The Lord of the Rings. I half-expected to encounter lumberjacks, hobbits, or both, drinking and singing inside. The covered patio outside had several firepits and propane lanterns, although the latter were mostly defunct. I'm starting to suspect there is a worldwide shortage of propane, thanks to COVID-19 and the transition to outdoor dining, to keep struggling restaurants afloat. Still, we were fortunate enough to be seated adjacent to one such firepit, so we were able to enjoy our Moscow Mule and Bloody Mary, warm and content. We also split a Cannonball of Fire: a sourdough bread bowl filled with hearty chili (made perfect with a side of Secret Aardvark sauce!) and subbing the salad out for some truffle fries (one of our favorite McMenamins offerings). The fries at any McMenamins are always perfectly cooked and salted, and the chili was spiced lightly to accommodate all palates (hence the added Aardvark for us capsaicin addicts!), not too heavy on beans or beef - a solid blend of all ingredients, with shredded cheese and onion on top. Between the two of us, it made for a somewhat-light, but completely filling lunch, before heading out to run a bunch of errands. Both my wife and I are looking forward to returning once COVID is a thing of the past, to dine inside and experience the rustic decor. McMenamin's used to be my favorite restaurant. My husband and I don't eat out much, but when we do we would always come here. I ordered the Aztec salad and there was no cheese, no beans, and maybe two pieces of corn. The full size was no joke half the size it used to be, and this was the avocado... for reference this is like the size of a small slice from a normal avocado it's pewny. I asked for another and the waitress said "this is the best we have" with another small slice and I literally couldn't cut it with a knife, it was rock solid. When leaving she apologized but didn't offer any refund. Very sad to not be coming back anymore. read more

This is a great stop on your way out of town toward the coast. It's off the beaten path but a good number of us know the way there. This older building was rebuilt in recent years after a fire gutted the place. I'm certainly happy they rebuilt. It has standard Mcmenamins fare but I love the chill atmosphere here. They always have a fire going which is a nice touch. They have an upstairs and a deck off of the upstairs as well as the one out front. The upstairs is also home to a shuffleboard and a pool table. All in all a good stop out in the country(ish). I'll be back again. read more

The Rock Creek Tavern is one of my favorite McMenamins. The structure, decor and lighting all make me feel like I'm stepping into a Harry Potter film. I go here whenever I want to get out of the city and away from the masses or just to enjoy the setting on the rainy days when it feels extra magical. The food is always good. The margaritas are surprisingly the best I've ever had. I would give 5 stars, because I love this place so much, but the quality of service varies greatly with each visit. Probably like a 10 minute drive from the city of Hillsboro. They seem to play live music here on most nights. Upstairs they have billiards and shuffle board. The staff is amazing. Our 2nd time here and both have been bad (this location only). First time was during pandemic so we gave grace but today there was no excuse. Ordered a burger and 1/4 way in i realized I was eating the paper that separates the cheese slices. I mean come on, take pride in your food, folks! Probably our all time favorite McMennamins! A little "country in the city," effect... a perfect combo for my city-slicker husband and his small town wannabe country girl wife! Good live music, many/most nights after 7(?) Also a historical landmark... believe it used to be on either pony express route or other significant route.Just ask your server for little of its history. They did a nice job renovating and adding a layer (or upstairs) after it nearly burned to the ground year's ago! It's stone fire place, main survivor: iconic, mesmerizing and adds both ambience and warmth. Go early if you want a spot by the fire on weekends, (or most nights:). VIBES: Fall feels, evening time, fire roaring, old school cabin vibes, really nice and cozy and takes you to another place. Randomly located, not near anything else, free-standing wood structure. FOOD: I split the sausage w/ fries and hamburger w/ tots, everything was average or below average, except the tots, those were excellent. If I ever return (which I will, for the setting), I will probably legit order just a plate of tots. COVID practices: excellent, per CDC guidelines, felt comfortable and safe, adequate outdoor seating area, well-distanced. I went during off-hours on a Tuesday night, so cannot comment on distancing during weekends or more peak hours. read more

We stopped in to celebrate a special evening after driving by one afternoon. Safe to say this place is on our favorites list for a cozy date night or outing with visiting family and friends. The food is outstanding & their seasonal specials are creative: including the 'Hogshead Crispy Chicken Sandwich' & the 'Hammerhead Cheesesteak'. Quaint & intimate atmosphere large enough for a family meal or celebratory graduation dinner. We were served by Adreanna, who provided high quality service despite being seated in the second level (order at the bar only). She made a lemon drop per my request, but added strawberry as an optional add-on, which I gladly accepted. I will be visiting again! read more
