    McVeigh's - Yes, I know it's a Celtic bar...
    Todd V.

There are some nights when you really want to be left to your own devices, find a quiet corner in a quiet setting, settle into a leather-upholstered armchair by a fireplace and sip quietly from a snifter. Go into McVeigh's looking for that and you'll leave disappointed at best and embarrassed for asking for such nonsense at worst. McVeigh's is an Irish bar. It is not tarted up with "deep oak wood" and has waitresses preening in tartan schoolgirl skirts. If you get a server that speaks in an Irish accent, it's authentic. Be polite. The décor is plain. The tap list includes a properly poured Guinness. All the usual stuff. The biggest surprise of the entire place is the food. The chef takes pride in the food he serves and it shows, with every dish hitting the table as if it were being presented on the Food Network. It's one of the most pleasant shocks you'll get there. Nightly entertainment is run on the weekends on the stage downstairs, and every Thursday, you can go upstairs and watch live stand-up comedy with a mix of amateurs and pros alike. A definite five-star joint. Why did I only give it four? It has Glasgow Celtic shirts framed above the bar. As a Rangers fan, you're lucky it's not a three.

This place is a dirty bar near a giant church. Take me home, Ireland. I had a bloody Caesar here and it was pretty nasty, but hey, I'm the fool that didn't order a Guinness. Tables are long and crusty, but the staff is sweet and saucy. PEPPER POINTS for some solid, soupy poutine.

Bar area. Fine selection of draft beers on tap.

Brilliant bar. The McVeigh's (three generations no less) offer the closest thing possible to the genuine Irish bar experience here in Toronto. Brilliant people. They've established a bar that is much more that just a bar as well, it is a cornerstone of the Irish community here in Toronto! The bar serves as a perfect remedy to homesickness as well (re. Ireland) if that is what are you looking for. Great craic aka fun to be had here. Music and food is good, but most importantly the beer is! Sláinte!

    Sheppard's pie

Came here on a search for comfort food. I ordered the Sheppard's pie. Sadly, I needed to add a lot of salt to get the flavor to pop. If there was more seasoning on the dish, this would easily be a 5 star review. The plating and service were great. I was very impressed with our waitress. There was about 15 customers and she was the only one managing the dining area and bar when we got there. Although there was a lot of customers, she was still very attentive.

Live music on Fridays and Saturdays, great old school Irish bar vibe. Good selection of food but the kitchen closes earlier than other bars

Place was great until we got followed out by a 7 foot guy telling us that we didn't tip enough on a $250 bill. Won't go back.

I mistakenly came upon Town Crier Pub due to some marketing miscommunication on my part. I saw a lovely lunch special sidewalk sign and thought it was for them, but it was actually for the restaurant next door! However, I was already committed, and I always loved pubbing. Opened in early 2011, it was named after the historical role of town criers who served as the primary news source in medieval times. With the general theme of Belgian and German styles, its owners believed that European beers and news were linked. Would I be crying in my beer at this pub for entering the incorrect eatery in this town!? PURCHASE(S) Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold Lager Beer 5.5% ABV 20floz Draft ($11.50CAD): Golden amber color, aromatic malty aroma, low body, malty sweet flavor, clean smooth finish, and malty aftertaste. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=Oks3ELRLtUfkwpMwMfZ7YQ Town Crier Burger + Add Cheese ($17.00CAD + $2.00CAD): A simple burger made with prime rib beef patty, lettuce, pickle, red onion, and tomato on a lightly-grilled bun with an added slice of cheddar cheese, it was a sizable burger and did the job, but there wasn't anything special about it. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=XV6Yy6lwP5yngWkIFicroA [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 3.5 of 5.0 STARS] Substitute Onion Rings ($3.00CAD): A good side portion with many rings of generally uniform size, these were hot, lightly golden browned, semi-crunchy, and had a tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (not sweet Maui) pulled out at times. Although they were somewhat oily, they were good, and didn't come with any dipping sauce. Innis & Gunn Mangoes On The Run Fruited IPA Beer 5.0% ABV 20floz Draft ($11.00CAD): Dark strawberry color, fruity mango tropical aroma, low body, fruity hoppy mango sweet flavor, smooth finish, and slight bitter fruity mango tropical aftertaste. This was my favorite of the two for obvious reasons! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=_MZhEukjAcdC0Qfo4P2Kaw SERVICE I was happily greeted by a young host outside on the sidewalk who then directed me to a nice outdoor patio table perfect for people watching and the weather. He handed me a massive menu, supplied a glass of water, and soon enough I placed my order. My beers arrived quickly while the food took about ten minutes. He checked in often while we chatted throughout the time. It was a cool hang out for lunch - danke! PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): I was in the area all day for the start of the Toronto International Film Festival, so I simply walked. Otherwise, there were spots along the main drag of John St. and all surrounding streets, some nearby structures, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A cozy snug layout throughout, inside had a loungey warm feeling with a focal bar with a few stools https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=0&select=LZIKI_6GFVgLIPXXkbrICA and many closed-in tables; whereas, the outside patio was less formal but equally compact. Inside was very ornate of Belgian and German styles, while outside was casual and simple. Minimal natural lighting entered inside through the few windows and door opening and of course plenty outside while dim electric ceiling and table lights filled in both areas. There were no TVs nor any background music because chatter was everywhere. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=bYpvTBTNnDqaLvrEqNtYtA ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Town Crier Pub had me laughing, talking, and people watching for a relaxing afternoon and would gladly return. The number of beers available both on tap and in bottles was insane and I loved it! The food menu was expansive. The food was fine but nothing special, and the prices were relatively comparable. But, it was the service and staff that literally reeled me in for a good time. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $50.00CAD BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... All dishes were at least pretty tasty. Even the sushi was pretty good (this is not a sushi place) & the seaweed was the crispest I've had at a buffet. Roast beef was not the best cut but was tender & medium rare. At this price there's nothing to complain about. The biggest surprise was the roasted peppers which were really tender & had a great grill flavour. Potato salad with white balsamic dressing was good too with firm potatoes & a novel dressing. The fried rice was Japanese style so don't expect Chinese style. Stuffed basa had a good flavour & balance. The toppings didn't overpower the fish yet were not so weak that you only tasted the fish. Even the deep fried items (shrimp & wings) were good - not the usual buffet cheap crap. The only flaw was the desserts, eg the cream puff was a little dry. The tanghulu came out slowly but was not worth waiting for - the fruit was too big & the candy layer too soft & too thick.

I ordered the Steak & Prawns but it definitely lacked flavours. Where I know the server was not being attentive was when I had asked for medium well and it came out medium rare. The prawns were garlicky and flavourful but the steak was definitely underwhelming. We also ordered the Nachos with Chicken (chicken was extremely bland), Calamari (nothing special), Parm fries (probably best thing I had), and the Trio Dip (which was alright). Overall was a mid experience and not sure I would come back, after the way we were treated. 5.5/10 Recommend!
