    McVeigh's - Yes, I know it's a Celtic bar...
    Todd V.

There are some nights when you really want to be left to your own devices, find a quiet corner in a quiet setting, settle into a leather-upholstered armchair by a fireplace and sip quietly from a snifter. Go into McVeigh's looking for that and you'll leave disappointed at best and embarrassed for asking for such nonsense at worst. McVeigh's is an Irish bar. It is not tarted up with "deep oak wood" and has waitresses preening in tartan schoolgirl skirts. If you get a server that speaks in an Irish accent, it's authentic. Be polite. The décor is plain. The tap list includes a properly poured Guinness. All the usual stuff. The biggest surprise of the entire place is the food. The chef takes pride in the food he serves and it shows, with every dish hitting the table as if it were being presented on the Food Network. It's one of the most pleasant shocks you'll get there. Nightly entertainment is run on the weekends on the stage downstairs, and every Thursday, you can go upstairs and watch live stand-up comedy with a mix of amateurs and pros alike. A definite five-star joint. Why did I only give it four? It has Glasgow Celtic shirts framed above the bar. As a Rangers fan, you're lucky it's not a three.

This place is a dirty bar near a giant church. Take me home, Ireland. I had a bloody Caesar here and it was pretty nasty, but hey, I'm the fool that didn't order a Guinness. Tables are long and crusty, but the staff is sweet and saucy. PEPPER POINTS for some solid, soupy poutine.

Bar area. Fine selection of draft beers on tap.

Brilliant bar. The McVeigh's (three generations no less) offer the closest thing possible to the genuine Irish bar experience here in Toronto. Brilliant people. They've established a bar that is much more that just a bar as well, it is a cornerstone of the Irish community here in Toronto! The bar serves as a perfect remedy to homesickness as well (re. Ireland) if that is what are you looking for. Great craic aka fun to be had here. Music and food is good, but most importantly the beer is! Sláinte!

    Sheppard's pie

Came here on a search for comfort food. I ordered the Sheppard's pie. Sadly, I needed to add a lot of salt to get the flavor to pop. If there was more seasoning on the dish, this would easily be a 5 star review. The plating and service were great. I was very impressed with our waitress. There was about 15 customers and she was the only one managing the dining area and bar when we got there. Although there was a lot of customers, she was still very attentive.

Live music on Fridays and Saturdays, great old school Irish bar vibe. Good selection of food but the kitchen closes earlier than other bars

Place was great until we got followed out by a 7 foot guy telling us that we didn't tip enough on a $250 bill. Won't go back.

They have TVs all around the restaurant so no matter where you're sitting, you can still see the game really well. They also have pool tables and dart lanes, which are cool activities to keep you busy. One thing that surprised me was the $15 cover charge to get in for game day. I wasn't really expecting that, because they had no heads up on the reservation which I found odd. But considering how busy it was and how in demand the tables were, I guess it makes sense. Just something to keep in mind if you're planning to go for a big game. The atmosphere was definitely the highlight. It was loud, energetic, and everyone was really into the game. The service was good too. Our server was friendly and conversational. She was such a sweetheart and even moved our table so we could see the screen better. We had to wait a little for the food, but that's honestly expected when the restaurant is completely full. We got their wings and nachos to eat. Wings were decent we got their buffalo and the honey garlic. Both solid, didn't stand out much but their ranch was actually very yummy. The nachos on the other hand, DELICIOUS! Probably some of the best i've had at a pub. Very impressed! Super cheesy and full of so many toppings and sides, i'd literally come back just for them. Overall, cute spot! I'll definitely be visiting again.

I mistakenly came upon Town Crier Pub due to some marketing miscommunication on my part. I saw a lovely lunch special sidewalk sign and thought it was for them, but it was actually for the restaurant next door! However, I was already committed, and I always loved pubbing. Opened in early 2011, it was named after the historical role of town criers who served as the primary news source in medieval times. With the general theme of Belgian and German styles, its owners believed that European beers and news were linked. Would I be crying in my beer at this pub for entering the incorrect eatery in this town!? Innis & Gunn Mangoes On The Run Fruited IPA Beer 5.0% ABV 20floz Draft ($11.00CAD): Dark strawberry color, fruity mango tropical aroma, low body, fruity hoppy mango sweet flavor, smooth finish, and slight bitter fruity mango tropical aftertaste. He handed me a massive menu, supplied a glass of water, and soon enough I placed my order. My beers arrived quickly while the food took about ten minutes. He checked in often while we chatted throughout the time. It was a cool hang out for lunch - danke! Inside was very ornate of Belgian and German styles, while outside was casual and simple. Minimal natural lighting entered inside through the few windows and door opening and of course plenty outside while dim electric ceiling and table lights filled in both areas. There were no TVs nor any background music because chatter was everywhere. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=bYpvTBTNnDqaLvrEqNtYtA ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Town Crier Pub had me laughing, talking, and people watching for a relaxing afternoon and would gladly return. The number of beers available both on tap and in bottles was insane and I loved it! The food menu was expansive. The food was fine but nothing special, and the prices were relatively comparable. But, it was the service and staff that literally reeled me in for a good time. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $50.00CAD BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... Unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. One thing worth noting is that if you're provided with a menu, not everything listed is available as part of the buffet. Certain seafood dishes and desserts are reserved for à la carte service, which wasn't immediately obvious. The experience started a little inconsistently. Some tables received a welcome drink while others did not, and there didn't appear to be any explanation for the difference. The atmosphere also wasn't quite what I expected. It often felt as though the dining room was geared more toward content creation than enjoying a leisurely meal. Buffet lines became quite long at times as some guests paused to set up ring lights and film multiple shots before moving on. Throughout the afternoon, ring lights remained in use at several tables, and a few groups could be heard repeating their toasts to capture the perfect video. While I understand that's part of the social media culture today, it did take away from what could have been a more relaxed dining experience. As for the food, it was enjoyable but ultimately didn't stand out. Given the restaurant's reputation, I had expected a bit more in terms of quality and freshness. Toronto has no shortage of excellent sushi restaurants, many of which offer a stronger culinary experience in a more relaxed setting. One interaction with the manager also left me a little puzzled. While checking in with our table, he seemed surprised to learn that we were locals, mentioning that most guests he speaks with are visiting from out of town. Considering the restaurant's location beside one of the city's major theatres in the Entertainment District, I wasn't sure why that was unexpected. He then shared that he never leaves the city for anything, which made for an unusual conversation and didn't feel especially relevant to our dining experience. Overall, I can understand why the restaurant appeals to those looking for a lively, social media-friendly outing. For me, however, the focus seemed to lean more toward the atmosphere than the food itself. While I'm glad I gave it a try, I don't think it would be my first choice the next time I'm looking for a sushi buffet
