I encountered a very pleasant gentleman who was very welcoming. The store is small and clean. I ordered the spinach and feta cheese pie and the beef curry pie. I also purchased Crunchie candy bars and a small bag of Flings which are shaped like cheese curls. The Flings have a unique flavor and I like it. The Crunchie bar is very crunchy with a buttery, toffee and caramel flavor. Keep the candy bar in the fridge for the crisp taste. The spinach with feta cheese is the best I have tasted. Meal in a pie ... more like LOVE in a pie! A friend of mine recommended this spot to me and I completely understand why he loves it so much! I should've came months ago when he told me because I've been missing out. My boyfriend and I popped in on a Sunday shortly after they opened and were immediately greeted by a smiling, friendly woman wearing a Florida Panthers (Go Cats!) shirt so I already knew I was going to enjoy this place. The inside is super clean, organized and really easy to order. They have some tables outside, however we were planning on eating them down by the beach. As we stood there trying to decide which pies we wanted, she was sooo patient with us. Then, along came another smiling, friendly gentleman and I asked them both for help picking my third pie because I simply couldn't decide. We went with the chicken curry, lamb curry and beef steak (having to refrain myself from buying more)! Holy molyyyyyy these pies are beyondddd delicious. This is probably the only time I'll admit that the more crumbs I had on my shirt, the better! I have never tasted a more flaky, buttery, perfectly baked pastry like that in my life! The filling inside of each pie was fresh, hot, and absolutely made with LOVE! Both the chicken and lamb meat were sooo tender it made it so easy to enjoy; each bite we kept saying to each other: "wow!! this is good!!!" I'm kicking myself for not going back for more on my way home, but I cannot wait to visit again and SOON. This spot is truly one of a kind and I'll be thinking about these pies until I get back over there to try more of the options they have. Found this place on google a few weeks ago and today we were able to come in for a quick lunch. The curry chicken and beef steak meat pies were delicious! The crust was buttery and flaky and the filling was plentiful and flavorful! We are definitely going back to try the other pies - there were so many. The staff is also so friendly. I told them it was our first time there so the young lady behind the counter walked us through the pies, pointed out some South African sodas to have with our pies and told us about Biltong, South Africa's similar version to beef jerky. She told us people drove hours for their in-house made Biltong so we got a small bag to snack on. I can see how the texture could be similar to beef jerky but it definitely tastes more meat-y and fresh/natural. It's an interesting taste to get used to, but it's still pretty good. They also sell some pantry items and South African candies (which he bought a bunch of). Overall, great cozy mom and pop shop which deserves support! We'll be back! read more

Ommg these are little savory heavens in your mouth!!! I had this place bookmarked for years and I finally got a chance to stop by! It's a small little shop. You have options to buy them hot or cold. There is a deal if you buy more than 6 frozen ones. You will fill out the paper and keep the paper cuz each symbol on the pastry tells you which one is which and the cooking instructions. Boy I did not know they are big!! I have should look at the photos ahead of time. I ordered 1 hot bobotie and 1 hot spinach and feta pastry. Bobotie has some interesting spices and favors. I don't know how to describe it. One of their popular flavors! Spinach and feta is really good. Melts in your mouth! Also, when they stated it's hot, it's really hot. Try not to burn your mouth! I used to live within walking distance of Meal in a Pie for many years when I lived off Floranada just south of Commercial and west of Federal Highway. During that time, I would pop in often for a Bobotie Meat Pie. These are life changing lt delicious, and such a unique combination of spices and chutney that it is probably unlike anything you've ever had. The flaky crust, mild spice of the curry, sweetness of the chutney. So good. I crave these all the time now that I live roughly 15 miles away. Meal in a Pie is a counter service takeout spot with a small market of good from across the Atlantic. The owner and operator has brought his culinary roots from South Africa and delivers with every item. 12 flavors of meat pies and 2 styles of sausage roll are available, either served hot and fresh or frozen for at home preparation. These are a little pricier than you might think, but it is worth it! They are stuffed with meat, huge, and delicious. All the styles I've tried are excellent, with my favorites being Shepherd's Pie, Chicken Curry, Chicken, and Beef Curry, but my all time favorite is the Bobotie. Hot pies are $7.59. Frozen pies are $6.59. Sausage rolls are $4.77. You can get a 4-pack of rolls for $12.99 or a half dozen pies for $34.80, or $5.80 each for any number more than that. These cook up at home as perfectly as in the store. Usually there is limited selection on display as they insist to sell them hot and fresh. However, calling before you come will result in them making any variety you want to be ready when you get there. My favorite part about the multicultural community in South Florida is enjoying the culinary delights of many places. There's nothing better than a Meal in a Pie! The food here litterally describes the name of the place. The portions are just as big as the containers itself. I'm disappointed that I never tried this sooner. I've been missing out on their pies all these years. Today I finally decided to stop by. The shop is small and stocked with dried goodies besides the pies they sell. Its nice to have other types of snacks offered that differ from the norm. As I walked in I was greeted with a lovely smile and told them it was my first time there. The person helping me was patient and explained every single pie in detail. They only had a few options available because everything was practically sold out. But the one's I wanted were already at the window. I asked for the pepper beef steak, curried chicken, and the pork sausage roll. I was told that after the afternoon rush, it is best to call and place your order 40 minutes ahead of time so they can prepare your pies if your eating them right after you pick them up. Otherwise they have frozen options where you can take them home and heat them up yourself. Its definitely a great option for lazy days when you don't want to drive. So upon taking my first bite of the peppered beefsteak pie I was astonished by the perfectly balanced flavors that hit my tastebuds. The texture of the beef was tender and the crust was flaky with a ton of delicious buttery layers. The pie was served HOT. So watch out for that first bite! The second pie I tried was the curry chicken. I honestly can't tell you which one I love more. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and the flavors of the spices left a nice aromatic aftertaste. The last thing I tried was the pork sausage roll. It was tasty and simple. The only thing I felt like it was missing, is hot sauce. The canned sparkling apple soda was sweet and tart. Personally, it was on the sweet side for me. The flavor tasted like candy green apples. This place is the go to place for a comfort meal on the go. There's no in harm in trying. One is too little and two is too much; what a predicament did I find myself in yesterday. I've been meaning to check out Meal in a Pie for ages now and I can finally say I have. Checking it off the list and marking it with an asterisk meaning must visit again soon. Agenda talk irrelevant, my boyfriend and I stopped by on our way back to Miami. Parking was limited, but we got a space. Went inside and despite reading reviews, I was surprised at how small the place was. Do not let that deter you though. There are at least ten or so seats available if you want to eat there. You have two options. You can either eat there and enjoy freshly made pies or you can get them to go. If you take them to go, you get them frozen and you have to bake them per the instructions they have on their flyer. Not a bad deal if you are in a rush; they have a special going on for six frozen pies at $29.99. There must be at least a dozen flavors. Not to mention that they have sausage rolls, chocolates, and a whole lot of drinks and sauces you can also buy. Owner, or who I think is the owner, is ridiculously pleasant. He let us eat first and then he charged us. I guess he must have known we would fall in love with the decadent flavors and would end up ordering more. We tried: -Spinach and feta pie: Got the last warm one. Had I ordered it and they hadn't had it, it would have taken about half an hour to bake. Anyway, this vegetarian pie was downright delicious. Cheesy and no skimping on the spinach. Loved. -Chicken curry pie: Boyfriend ordered this one. Since we both shared pieces of each other's respective pies, I had a piece and I enjoyed this so much with its tangy Indian flavors that I ordered a second one for myself. Ended up having to take it home, but who cares? More fun in the long run! -Sausage roll: Given that one pie wasn't enough for either of us, boyfriend who had been eyeing this, opted to get one, and well, he couldn't finish it, but he kept raving about its amazingness. I was stuffed by this point and abstained. We definitely want to go back and try some of the other flavors, particularly one of the meat ones. My boyfriend loved the sausage roll so much that it really did get us wondering about the meat pies. At any rate, everything we tried was spot on and oh so savory. Hmm, one last little tidbit - apparently if you call about 30-35 minutes ahead, they can start baking your pies, so if you're in a rush and/or don't want to wait and/or doing the baking yourself, this is a definite must! read more

Oh my god! Okay... I now get all the kudos about this place. I think I've found a last meal contender. As many times as I've been to doctors nearby, holy cross, and mom's kitchen (after fasting blood tests), I've never turned off Floranada (45th) onto 20th avenue... You're on the cusp of a good residential area and right near US 1/Federal Hwy. There is street parking right out front. On an early Tuesday, I was the only customer except for the gal sitting at the one table outside checking her emails. I decided on take out and got one chicken curry and one shepherds pie. As I was driving the smell of the curry wafted over, and I just had to open the box and tear off a corner. The pastry is so light and flaky it just melts in your mouth. I spent the next two traffic lights, picking out crumbs from my hair and off my clothes! When I got home I decided to try a piece of each pie. The chicken curry was packed with shredded chicken, peas and carrots all in a slightly spicy but very aromatic curry sauce. The shepherds pie is ground meat and peas and carrots in a touch of sauce layered with creamy mashed potatoes. Both are in that flaky crust. I decided I like the curry chicken one slightly better as there was more meat. You have to be a curry lover however to appreciate how good a flavor it is. Friday before Carnival I pick up a friend that decided to risk a hurricane to come party in Miami. She touches down and we hear soca music and her stomach growl. I laugh til tears threaten to fall from my eyes and check my bookmarks. My friend is originally from Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. When I tell her we are going to an African grocery store she's already waiting to criticize the place. Tiny shop that's been here for nearly 20 years supplying the area with African groceries and delicious bakery meals in a pies. With a Sparletta on the side of her pie, she had no complaints - besides some of the pies had already sold out. This seems to be common because a few others popped up behind us after we brought all their hot stuff. They all said, "I knew I should have called ahead." While I was snapchatting my Feta and Spinach, the only no meat option that was available hot, my friend has already started eating her pie. They reminded me a lot like Haitian patties, I was just shocked how big these things were. They are truly a meal in a pie. She took a bite of her meat and kidney and nearly burned herself. Even though we grabbed the last of the hot pies, those things were super fresh! We each grabbed two more frozen pies. As he packed up our items I checked out the products of this interesting store. Friend said they have a nice variety but thought the prices were marked up. We packed away our pies in a cooler in the trunk and hit the beach. After eating a pie all you want to do is lounge somewhere. They had 3 veggie options available. I tried the spinach/feta hot in house - 5 star! Flaky, soft, creamy, plenty of spinach and equal amounts of cheese. Several hours later I made the veggie curry. I followed the directions on the card and it came out perfect - 5 star delicious! The following Monday I make the lentil bobotie - 3 stars. That last one was kind of a disappointment. Friend got the traditional bobotie and she bit into her pie and I could smell the heat and spices. She hadn't been home in over 5 years but as she ate she started telling me stories or the last time she visited. But when I bit into the coconut curry lentil bobotie - it was just okay. My recollection of ones I had eaten in the UK were that they were just cold and blah. What makes the hot, fresh and delicious pies that come straight out of the oven even more desirable and extra special is the sheer love with which they are prepared and served by the very nice and sweet owners and their wonderful employee named Josue from Venezuela. This is a beautiful establishment that oozes with warmth. I walked in at 1:15 pm and did not want to leave. Love the simple yet beautiful display of genuine South African goodies and groceries that magically transports you 8000 miles East. It is $5.99 for a hot pie and here are the choices: Beefsteak Beef Curry Bobotie Chicken Chicken Curry ( ordered and enjoyed at the location) Lamb Pasty Lamb Curry Steak and Kidney Shepherd's Pie Spinach and Feta ( got one to go) Vegetable Curry ( also packed a hot one) Lentil Bobotie( thank you may I have another..!) Sausage Roll The other option is to take the frozen pies home and heat them in a conventional oven with specific instructions for about a half an hour. No microwaving!! The special is get 6 for $30!! They do a lot of take out here. They do accept credit cards. There is limited seating inside with 3 chairs, a small 3 by 3 table and 6 stools. The space may be tight for a large group. Meal in a Pie is a rather nifty cross or combination of what is a South African condiment/accessory food shop, a South African food take out and South African bistro. It's the only place I know of to get fresh, tasty well prepared South African treats like their namesake meat pie, bobotie or some decent strips of biltong. I've been stopping here frequently over the years, not only for their meat pies but also because they seem to be the only area source for various traditional South African condiments and generally hard to find assortments of chutneys. For those who have never tried a South African meat pie with its delicious minced meats, I'd highly recommend that they do. So I was dragged here and made to try a "sausage roll". I do not like sausage. Turns out a sausage roll is like the heavily seasoned meat from a Jamaican patty without the scotch bonnet pepper wrapped in a light, flaky, puff pastry. What's not to like about that?!?!? It's freaking delicious! Also had a lamb pasty, bobotie and curried lamb. Lamb pasty was better than the curry. However, the sausage roll was so flavourful that the other pastries seemed a bit bland in comparison. On their own, they are great. But if having a sausage roll, either have that last or have the others at another time. Bobotie was not my cup of tea but my husband loved it.
