Really wanted to like Mean Queen but service was slow and made for a less than ideal experience. They were out of a lot of seafood items. Our food came out at different times; by the time my friend got her cheesy rolls, I had pretty much already finished my lunch combo. We kept having to flag down our server who seemed to be taking care of all the tables upstairs and bartending at the same time. Seems like a cool spot but we were disappointed.

We were in Sitka, AK between Christmas and New Year's and this was one of the only sit down places open. We had a couple substantial meals that were pretty decent. Loved the atmosphere. They are located upstairs so you get a bit of a view too. Service was stellar.

Overall kind of a dive-y vibe. We stopped by on a cold and rainy day in late May on the recommendation of the captain of our small-boat whale watching tour. It was cozy and my grilled cheese + tomato soup was perfect for this day that felt more like November. My husband had a couple oysters which he says were pretty good, and maybe a BLT but whatever it was clearly wasn't very memorable. He said he'd give it 3.5 stars, which is about where I was hovering, too. The servers were a little awkward, like maybe they were brand new and hadn't ever worked in a restaurant before? They didn't seem to have developed any of that "server's intuition" yet. I'm writing this six weeks or so after the fact and unfortunately I can't remember what made me think that, but i do know it was more than a vague feeling, and more than one thing, and with more than one of the staff. You have to walk up stairs to the second floor and I didn't see an elevator, so points off for inaccessibility. It smelled like an old building, which isn't necessarily bad, but for me not the most appetizing aroma. The view was incredible, though, and the location was convenient. Between that and the solidly decent food, we didn't regret our visit.

Horrible interaction with the waitress. We asked if she minded if we could take the window table, she replied no. We took that as no she didn't mind. She then screams through the restaurant, I SAID NO!" Because of her attitude/response we just walked out. Waitress with the glasses should not be working customer service. Will make sure every one I know coming to Alaska won't eat here.

The food here is always good and the vibe is very relaxed. This is a good place to bring the family for a meal and a great place to sit at the bar. Staff is very friendly. Pizzas are great. I like to order oysters as a starter. The fish and chips are good. I like the chicken sandwich and choosing a wing sauce to go with it. I got the garlic last time. This is def our go to spot.

This place was packed when we walked in. We ended up getting a table for 4 rather quickly though. Our server was very friendly and let us know it was probably going to take longer for our order which we were fine with. We ordered our deep dish pepperoni first and then she came back to get our drinks and appetizer order. The drinks were delicious, adult lemonades and Bloody Mary's. The cheese curds came quickly and were hot and yummy. The Queens Crown appetizer was AMAZING! As deep dishes go, it was good but those appetizers were so good! Definitely come to this little hole in the wall place for a great meal and friendly service!

We just had a margarita and appetizer here. The margarita was really good! The combination appetizer was pretty nice size. I really enjoyed the deep fried green beans. Our server was really nice too!

Service was hilarious. 4 bartenders that only catered to their friends. Had to ask 4 different times (all while sitting at the empty bar for help) then left early to go elsewhere. I understand it was Thanksgiving Eve, but it gave us the impression, unless you are a local here, you're not that important. Pizza was just ok, but after the service, I'll pass coming back.

The ambiance was kinda busted with the smell of Pinesol on the way up the stairs. At least they're keeping it clean. Caesar salad said shaved Parm, but that was a shredder blade used; plenty of Parm! Shaved is shaved large shredder is shredded. That's okay though, certainly not a show stopper. The single malt rocks was very well poured. Not sure if the tip was included. The half salad was Plenty for one; maybe two! Instead of croutons, seasoned pizza crust wedges. Nice touch. "Zero" evidence of anchovy in the dressing. They get an "A" for doing their own dressing. Worth the price! Woulda been enough for my dinner but I got a pizza too. A Margherita or so I thought. Lack of culinary training creates experiences like these, I think. I don't want to be rude and ask to see their fresh Mozzarella. It was imperceptible on the crust. Oh! They got it! Shaved Mozzarella! They must've shaved the Mozz instead of the Parm! Oh well. The tomatoes were cherry Tomatoes cut in half. The basil chiffonade, however, was perfect. These seasonal places lose so much to the tourist-trap/Cruise-Ship economies, it's really the best one can expect in these remote places. Definitely a good place to go for pizza. Stick to the combo though! The crust is perfect! I'll give 'em four stars for creating something like this in Alaska. I've spent a little time in AK and fresh veggies are hard to come by at times. There seems to be a core if individuals who really care and then there's the seasonal help. What did I expect? .......the diamond in the rough. This one is CZ for sure. Good food at a moderate price. If you're there in Sitka, stop by and don't get fancy! read more

Pizza was perfectly cooked and offered delicious gourmet options. Salads are no joke and loaded with quality veggies and add ins. Drink menu had a unique variety to choose from. Friendly service on a busy Friday night. You can tell it's a good choice for visitors when the place is full of locals! Definitely recommend for an above average but casual dining experience read more

We ordered dinner 4 of us meal came out in stages my meal came out in about 10'mins.. first pizza came out 45 mins later was told the next 2 were on the way after 30'mins we left... super sad hopefully it was a one off Sad I was hoping for a better experience but I will never be back .. super slow on drink refills as well read more

I'm not a pizza fanatic by any stretch. Usually if I have a choice between pizza and anything else, I'll pick anything else. But this place is outstanding! I got the Angry Jester Stromboli and it was incredibly good. The margaritas are exceptional. The service was excellent and friendly. And the prices are right where they need to be for food this good. I highly recommend Mean Queen. read more

Locals know this place is legit... And then some. Tourists stop into Sitka, see the small town, blue collar feel and aren't so sure. LISTEN!!! This place is as good of a pizza joint as you'll find. An interesting dining experience in Sitka. The pizzas are huge and the combos are interesting. The pizza was surprisingly good to us NYC pizza snobs. Drinks were reasonably priced and the salad was enormous- share those. They have a good beer selection, wine not so much. Service left a bit to be desired because our waiter, who seemed new, kept getting lost. I'm pretty sure he was stoned out of his mind. On the plus side, he directed us to the best dispensary in town. read more

This place was recommended by a fishing guide while visiting this town on a cruise. Some of the best pizza I've ever had. Seriously. Had to have a second piece. Thin crispy crust. Perfect. If you like margaritas and lemontinis try the Super model margarita. Very good! read more

Mean Queen has good food. The manager Mary however ran us off. She told us an hour wait. We walked through the restaurant just to see if if would really be an hour. We did not talk to customers we did not stand over a table. We simply just walked into the restaurant to see if a table was getting close to finishing or would it really be an hour. Our group was there 3 days ago and tipped 50%. We tip beyond good. She ran us off when we simply walked into the restaurant. I come to Sitka once a year with a large group. Mary at the mean queen just lost our business with her rudeness. If she is the owner I'm sorry to the staff because we tip great. We were there a couple nights ago and tipper 50% of our bill for 8 people. read more

Love the MQ. It is my go to place as a local. Simple menu but everything is great. Good pizza and wings that pass my wife's standards (she is from Buffalo). Love all the salads. The drinks are KILLER. Love the Margaritas. Two puts my wife behind the wheel. Art Deco type of decor. Great vibe at the bar. Locals drive the place all year and we share we visitors in the summer. Delicious fresh oysters with an offering of Puri Puri sauce that was amazing! The pizza - jalapeños and big pieces of bacon on a flavorful thin crust topped with a cream cheese sauce - outstanding! Very enjoyable bar/pizza/sports bar environment with good wings, pizza, and salads. The pretzel app was super solid and the salads had very fresh veggies. Get your dressing in the side as they are generous with the dressing. A wide variety of pizza options compliment the personal service and attention. This has to be the most crappy excuse for a restaurant in Sitka. Party of 8 arrived we seated ourselves and waiter brought menus and had a waitress bring us water. 20 minutes later still waiting with no service, went to the bar and asked if we could get someone to take our drink and meal order. Again no one came to take our order, saw the original waiter talking to kitchen staff the whole time. Packed our ass out of there and went elsewhere. Save yourself. From a lousy staff and go elsewhere. read more

I was told this was the best pizza in town. I would sure hate to eat the worse! I was not impressed as mine was burnt and had so little toppings on it, it was hard to recognize it as a Hawaiian. The drink was VERY expensive and VERY small. It was a margreta and was about 95% tequila and 5% mixer. Didn't care much for it either. I will not be back to this "Local Favorite." read more

Great pizza - a long variety of options - and delicious cocktails - check out the Sitka 75 made with Sitka Spruce tips. Open later than most restaurants in town which is great if you get hungry after 9 p.m. Whether you choose to sit at the bar or at a table, the servers and bar tenders are all very nice. There is pool but the table was always occupied the few times I came here. read more

Delicious thin crust pizza. The "Her Royal Highness" was the best and most interesting of the three pizzas we ordered - crispy crust, great roasted garlic in the topping. The "Fortress of the Pig" pizza was also good - nice amount of toppings, but the crust wasn't as crispy. The third, a plain cheese pizza, was ok but nothing special. Staff was very friendly, pizza was prompt, beer was cold, and view was great. All in all, a good find in Sitka. read more

Really great food. Their salads are huge. Joe, our waiter, recommended getting the 1/2 salad for my girlfriend and I to share, and he was right! We also ordered the Hawaiian Pizza. Loved the crust and marinara sauce. The pizza was excellent. Would recommend it! Service was fast and constant. Love it! read more

Tonight it was the Mean Queen for pizza during our stay in Sitka. Pizza, salad and beer. It was great. Wedge salad loaded with bacon, tomatoes, red onion and fresh lettuce. Perfectly dressed with the right amount of blue cheese dressing. Think crust pizza was good, wold have been great/out of this world if I would have asked the server to make it crispy. Definitely a Sitka must visit. read more

Nice little pizza spot- open later than many of the restaurants in Sitka. Love that you can "make your own pizza"- as someone who is lactose free, being able to put feta on my pizza was a wonderful change that gave me more options! read more

I don't know, did this place hire a new pizza cook? Our large party came in on a slow night and were seated immediately. The wait staff was friendly and accomodating, but it seemed to take a while to get drinks. We ordered a few half portions of the salads and they were very generous servings especially considering they were only half portions. The 6 pizzas we ordered were over done and black around the edges. They were thin crust, but ridiculously thin crusted to the point of being tasteless burnt cardboard. We had a couple members of our party sit at the bar and they paid for their drinks even though the staff was aware the table was going to be paying for everything. I'll believe all the glowing reviews this place has, but we really must have come on a bad day because the pizzas were incredibly disappointing and a nice staff can't make up for that. read more

A great place to grab some really decent food and a beer. A local beer is always on special for $4 a pint and the food is always hot and fresh and very very tasty. Grab a big salad to split for the group and enjoy the FREE FAST WI-FI to download all of the days fishing pics while you wait for your food. read more

We are Sitka's premier cocktail spot with freshly squeezed juices and a premium wells. Now open for breakfast 7 days a week. After 11:30 we offer thin crust and deep dish pizza, Stromboli, chicken wings, and a variety of freshly tossed salads with house made dressings. The Mean Queen is family friendly before 9:00pm and rocking until 2:00am for 21 and over 7 nights a week. We are a non-smoking establishment. History

Established in 2015.

Our Bar is located at the former VanWinkle and Sons restaurant location, upstairs near the bridge. After a complete remodel we opened the doors in January of 2016. Our goal is to provide the best in pizza and drink service to Sitka along with breathtaking views.

Meet the Business Owner: Patrick and Mary O.

Patrick and Mary, co-owners opened the Mean Queen to give Sitkans another year round choice for cocktails and casual dining. Patrick is a Master bartender and both bring many years of experience in hospitality. Looking at the building we realized the location is ideal, downtown with beautiful mountain and water views. Being near the bridge we have a lot of boat activity and see whales spouting daily. We are happy to showcase Sitka's natural beauty.

I think the price could be lowered in exchange for a smaller serving because we felt bad wasting so much food. My fish arrived warm and was served with hand-cut fries. The batter was a little different from anything we've tried before. It was good, but I think there may have been a bit too much pepper added. It wasn't bad, just a different flavor profile, so keep that in mind. Overall, if you're looking for a place with beautiful views, we would recommend it. I ultimately decided on a 4 star rating rather than a 3 star rating because the scenery really added to our day in Sitka.

We used one and kept one as a souvenir. Also there is a liquor store connected to the bar where I'm sure locals come to stock up on their alcohol and tobacco. Back to my favorite casual spot in Sitka. The Kids and Grands love this spot, fantastic salad and pizza. Very much appreciated the mandatory mask policy since there is a lot of Covid here right now, lots of signs as you come in, they offer them if needed, saw a very stern manager kick a guy out that wouldn't do as the signs said, you must wear a mask if you are not at your table. Missed the oysters, they were so good last time we will have to come back when they have them again. read more

This establishment carries it's like a fiefdom, the service is arrogant if not discriminatory (towards straight men)..lazy, and the food is generally not worth the cost$. but their $ is made on transient tourism..they don't have to care. even about open discrimination. read more
