Located within walking distance of our hotel in Sitka Alaska. I had the $15 biscuits and gravy, a large portion with shredded potatoes on the side. They had some GF options, so While in port we decided to check it out. Service was a bit slow- maybe because they were not ready for the cruise season when we got there. We were a party of 2 and there were several tables open, but it took us about 15 minutes to actually get sat down. When we did get the table, it was not cleaned off and ready for us. We ordered the wings with 2 sauces- on the side, but it came covered in one and one on the side. The sandwich I ordered came with a salad, but instead I got fries. The food was ok. The avocado was good. I took a few bites and found two long strands of black hair in the food. That did it for both of us. Discover is an accepted form of payment. While looking over the menu, I sipped on a glass of Pinot Grigio for $9. My daughter had a Mean Queen Ice Tea for $7. Our table shared the Fried Cheese Curds for $11 and Ghosted Wings (qty 10) for $19. My daughter and I ordered an Oyster Shooter for $3.50 each. The mignonette was missing. We also ordered an Oyster Shooter for $8.50 which was served alongside a shot of tomato juice. We're from Washington and our oysters are served with pizazz. The oysters we received were lackluster and it didn't help that the mignonette was missing. I should have read the room better and ordered pizza like all the other patrons were doing. Really wanted to like Mean Queen but service was slow and made for a less than ideal experience. They were out of a lot of seafood items. We stopped by as part of an excursion and Brian and Ryan took care of us with champagne and raw oysters as an appetizer to our next few stops. The place is quite popular and has a very diverse menu with lots of seafood choices as well as pizza, beers and cocktails. Whatever you do don't ring the bell by the back wall as if you do you are buying drinks for the entire bar and if you don't the local authorities are called and you won't be happy. Overall kind of a dive-y vibe. We stopped by on a cold and rainy day in late May on the recommendation of the captain of our small-boat whale watching tour. It was cozy and my grilled cheese + tomato soup was perfect for this day that felt more like November. My husband had a couple oysters which he says were pretty good, and maybe a BLT but whatever it was clearly wasn't very memorable. He said he'd give it 3.5 stars, which is about where I was hovering, too. The servers were a little awkward, like maybe they were brand new and hadn't ever worked in a restaurant before? They didn't seem to have developed any of that "server's intuition" yet. I'm writing this six weeks or so after the fact and unfortunately I can't remember what made me think that, but i do know it was more than a vague feeling, and more than one thing, and with more than one of the staff. You have to walk up stairs to the second floor and I didn't see an elevator, so points off for inaccessibility. It smelled like an old building, which isn't necessarily bad, but for me not the most appetizing aroma. The view was incredible, though, and the location was convenient. Came by very hungry, left full. The place was busy when we got them and waited about 15 minutes for a table. The interior was nice and they had sports on multiple screens. Waiter told us kitchen was backed up and would be 30-45 minutes to get pizzas. We ordered fried cheese curds and fried pickles while we waited. They were both very good. We got both pizzas and they did not last long as we devoured them pretty quick. The one with the portobello mushrooms was marginally ok. Not a huge fan. The other pizza was exceptionally good. Been eating & drinking here since they opened a decade or so ago (100+ visits) Food is consistent, service is typically more attentive if you sit at the bar, as I have found to be the case at most establishments, so no offense at all to any of the wait staff! Although it's a pizza joint, I don't typically order the pizza, the queen's crown and deep dish are decent but the pizzas I have gotten the last few years are occasionally overcooked/somewhat burnt and the crust recipe is just ok. Almost every other menu item is worthy though!! Cocktails are good and probably the best prices in town. Open year-round, owned and operated by long time local Sitkans and they make us locals feel appreciated. If you are a tourist, don't expect special treatment or quick service, this is a no frills establishment and they don't have time for your entitled, rushed attitude. If that's your kink, maybe just stay on the cruise ship where there's no need to rush around. read more

I was in Sitka for 3 nights and I ate at the Mean Queen 3 times! Twice for dinner and once for breakfast. This place has some of the best pizza I've had in a while and they have fresh squeezed OJ for all of your breakfast drinking needs. You have to go up a large flight of stairs to get to the dining area which is decently sized. The wait staff was very accommodating to our large party for dinner (I'm talking like 18 people!) and they were equally friendly and attentive when I returned and sat solo at the bar for dinner the following night. It had pesto, mozzarella, feta, chicken, artichokes, olives and fresh basil. It was amazingly delicious! It took some time for our pizza to come out but granted, we were there at a very busy time of day and year. The Queen of Sitka Eateries There aren't a lot of restaurant options in Sitka, Alaska, but one is enough when that one is the Mean Queen. It merits a recommendation for the wonderful view alone. The second floor bar / dining room offers the towns best spot to take in the harbor and surrounding bay. The bar serves virtually any drink you can imagine, and the bar tender is extremely friendly and helpful. We enjoyed some of the local brews - all spot on. One speciality, Fresh Oysters, are sweet, briny and delectable. The 'Queen' also serves up a truly great Pizza. While we did not get to meet the Queen herself, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to her food palace. read more

The servers are very nice but not particularly good, easily confused and constantly getting orders wrong, nothing crazy but expect some frustration. The food is, well it's bar food. Don't expect anything to blow your socks off. I will say however the Queens Crown pizza pocket dish is incredible. Little perfect balls of Pizza, so if that's your thing, do it! In all, I can't bring myself to give her a 3 star review, but know what you're about when you go. If you want a few drinks, a beautiful view, and a relaxed atmosphere. It's the place! Unfortunately, I must amend my previous review. If you're looking for a place to party on the weekend, it still stands. If you're looking to get food in Sitka, you should probably look elsewhere. The menu primarily centers around pizza. The prices are VERY high, for pizzas that feed one. And the quality is...not very high. I ordered the Jester, and it took forever to come out. The server gets huge credit for confessing that the kitchen messed up my pizza and was going to have to re-cook it. She even gave me a 20% discount for it. 5-stars for the server, she is the only reason this review isn't much, much lower. Once it came out...it was just OK. It was more like an average, chain delivery pizza than something you'd get from a local restaurant for over $20 for a small. The dough/bread/crust part of the pizza was very hard, and had little flavor. The toppings and cheese were just OK. Tap selection wasn't that great. I wish they had some Sitka beer on tap. read more
