I got my hair cut here for the first time tonight and could not be happier. I had grown out my hair to about the middle of my back and knew I wanted to cut it short. For such a dramatic change, I wanted to find the right stylist to cut it, and when I found out Effie & Co. specialized in "precision haircuts," I thought it might be the right place. And it was. Michael did an absolutely amazing job: he took inspiration from a picture I showed him, but then improved on it and made small adjustments so that it worked with the shape of my face. I appreciated the time and attention to detail he spent in taking my long hair to a sassy but classy new cut. He also gave me a few pointers on how to style it at its new length. Also, for anyone interested in doing the same: I went in knowing I wanted to donate the cut hair, since it was going to be so long. Michael was also great about going through those extra steps and making sure it was all banded together. Bottom line: I was glad I went and will definitely be going back here again. read more

This is a long-time, well established salon in Belmon Shore. They specialize in "precision haircutting" which is the formal training method of Vidal Sassoon. The wonderfulness of this method is that no matter how you style your hair... it looks fabulous. The cuts are precise and I feel are the best looking. The stylists are formally trained and its more method than, for lack of a better description, "personal cutting style". Cuts were $40! A total steal for a full hour or more of full attention. A co-worker who wanted to get her hair cut w me wanted to book her appt exactly an hour after mine...my stylist Elisa (who has since left), told me that she wanted to give me her full attention so she needed at least an hour and a half. Prices have since gone up to $45 and it is a flat fee (not more for longer hair). At first impression, the salon is small but newly remodeled. It's not artsy but more posh. I have been going there for 4 years but moved to the OC. I've been trying to find another salon that does precision haircutting but there are so few ppl that are trained! :( Effie's entire crew goes to hair shows on a bi-annual basis. They stay up to date on new cutting methods and I feel that's what makes a good hairstylist... always learning new techniques. I think about going back there all the time but I'm lazy about the drive. But its worth it. You haven't had a real haircut until you've had a precision haircut ;) read more

I came to find Effie & Co., because I actually followed Jenny D. from her previous salon. For a while there, I thought I had lost her and I was legit devastated. Because everyone knows when you find a good stylist, you hold on for dear life! After a little recon, I found out she moved here. Jenny does such a great job, it has been months since I got my hair done and I am still getting compliments daily! She is a consummate professional, and even keeps notes on the products and color #'s she uses on her clients. I walked by Saturday night and every chair was full : ) Happy to see business! I read all the excellent reviews on Effie & Co., and now I'd like to add mine.  This beauty salon in Belmont Shore was opened around 1974, by Effie, who hails from Cuba.  Effie always hired and trained her hair cutters in the Vidal Sasoon method of precision cutting.  Effie is terrific.  She's retired but works part-time there.  She is very dedicated to her clients.   I've been going to Sonja for 40 years.  She is an excellent hair cutter.  In fact, I have a friend, Trudy, who has travelled the world and had her hair cut at the best places, but she has NEVER once encountered a cutter who pays such atttention to detail as Sonja.  I'll second that.  I've commented in the past to Trudy that she has a nice cut - but she'll say "Sonja didn't cut this and I can really tell the difference." Once you sit in Sonja's chair, she will have a consultation with you as to what you'd like, and will take 1-1/2 to 2 hours to wash/cut/blow dry your hair.  She never short changes anyone.  Cost:  $45.  It's a real hair cutting experience to go there.   I wanted to add my comments because even though the new people do great work, too, I wouldn't want the mainstay of that establishsment to get overlooked - Effie and Sonja.  They are fabulous. You really get value for your money at Effie & Co.  No doubt about that at all.  They all have very high standards and stand by their work.  So, try Sonja, at Effie & Co., for a precision haircut.  Give yourself plenty of time for this.  You won't be disappointed. read more
