I had my hair cut at Mary's downtown Long Beach salon. Parking was easy, two hours free in the structure. The street and venue is very chill and pedestrian friendly. I arrived and she let me into the Salon Row, which is a collective of creative beauty studios. I have naturally thick black Asian hair, kind of straight, with unruly wavy/frizz texture AND went in with super oily and unwashed hair (I'm so so sorry Mary). I was somewhat indecisive but shared some pictures of shorter blunt hair cuts/bobs. Mary was attentive while we went back and forth a little bit about what I liked and she got right to work. After researching for a very long time about hair stylists to go to, I really looked into Mary and asked some of her past and current clients about her work. She's patient and will work with your hair type and anything else that's unique to you as long as you're understanding and patient that what you might want, won't be possible in one session. I can't express how utterly fantastic she is and how gorgeous my hair always comes out. I went in for a free 30 minute consultation and we talked about my end goal and how long it might possibly take to get me there. I went in with long blonde and orangey hair from a bad experience from someone else. It looked worse than it sounds. I had waited a long time before choosing to get anything done because I wanted my hair to be virgin to at least my shoulders when I went in for the hair cut and future appointments. At the time of writing this review, I've visited three times and every time has been honestly filled with informative talks, fun casual conversations, and LOTS of snacking. She's very meticulous about her mixtures for your hair and will do the best she can to get your hair to where you want. If you want a super drastic change in one session, it's probably possible and Mary will tell you that, except she will tell you how it would affect your hair and suggest a better time period to go about it. Mary is great! Perfect for Asian hair especially. I've been going to her for almost a year now. When I first showed up, I had hopes of doing an ash blonde ombre on my dark Asian hair. I'd already gone to 3 other colorists in the LA area and wasted hundreds of dollars while none could get what I wanted. I showed up with a combination of orangey-yellow base color and awkward/unnatural highlights, and Mary was very transparent with her evaluation of what was needed to get my hair to where I wanted it to be. She didn't over-promise and set my expectations for what was realistic for my hair. Three ~5 hours sessions later, we finally got to my goal! Ashy blonde that is texturized and not brassy. I also love that she sells product that she swears by and can provide many tips for hair care outside of just color preservation - from health to growth to what oils to use so that I maintain the non-brassy look that I want. mary is a pretty cool chick. #1. she cut and dried and styled my hair in one hour. yup. one hour. and i have long, thick, terribly self-managed hair, and she made me look like a champ in 60 minutes. i have never been to a stylist that can do my hair that fast. EVERRRRR. it usually takes 1.5-2 hours for others to figure out WTH is going on. #2. she is super fun to talk to. that record 60 minutes felt like 30 b/c we talked the whole time. unlike past stylists where you force conversations and then drop to radio silence for the last 30 minutes as you text on your phone while they finish up...awkward/rude. not here. #3. i'll be honest. this is also the most expensive cut i've ever had (starts at $90) but i've also received the most compliments on how great and healthy and shiny it looks. and this is not on the day she styled it, so that's worth some extra dollars for the expertise she has. her salon is one of many in a place called "salon republic" so if you're a first timer, look for this. each studio is numbered and there is a placard at each studio. hers is #4. i'll brave the drive into downtown SM for mary again! read more

As someone who has been led to horrible stylists who don't understand my hair, its texture, volume, that have completely destroyed it, Ruby is a GODSEND. She nurtured my hair and made sure not to keep on the bleach too long to ensure the healthiest result. I appreciate that because my hair (before the color) was completely virgin dark brown from root to end.
