There is zero chance anyone is choosing mediacom over competition. The ONLY reason people "choose " mediacom is because of no actual choice. Also Don't be fooled by Mediacom "Total Care". This is a department that seems very trained in "legalese" and are depending on customer ignorance to push service problems back on the customer. The only reason the "Total Care" email is spammed all over social media, reddit, Google/Yelp reviews, etc is to give the illusion they are fixing the customer issues. They simply aren't. tl;dr - In my opinion (and others), this department is a waste of time. My advice is to avoid Mediacom if you can. When I moved into my house 3 years ago, I had Mediacom Internet service. Everything worked fine, however, Imon came to be and had a $70 per month 1G plan available, so I switched. Only to find out that my Apple Mail would not work! My email provider, Spectrum, could not verify my credentials, so I could not add my account to Apple Mail. After 2 years of arguing and using Webmail, with both companies blaming each other and Apple, I couldn't take it anymore! I switched back to Mediacom, so now I'm tearing out what little hair I have left!! The service was installed in mid-May, and the cable is still not buried!!! I have called, texted, emailed, chatted, and even went into their Iowa City office! All I get is apologies and excuses! I'm willing to give Mediacom 2 stars because our internet service generally works. Since they switched to those Xtream boxes for TV, however, watching TV is more irritating than relaxing. We NEVER get to watch a show without the box freezing at least once. Usually it's many times per show. The second my area gets fiber optic, I'm done with Mediacom. After 20 years of Mediacom I was forced into subscribing to Xstream television/cable. After a mere 2 or 3 weeks the remotes for both my living room and bedroom ceased working. I called and all the agent seemed able to do was send me 2 new remotes (I can't believe both of the ones I had stopped working at the same time) and set up a tech appointment (for 2 weeks in the future). Negative 5 stars! Negative 5 stars! Mediacom's customer service makes Comcast look great! I moved into a building that comes with cable and internet already set up. My landlord sent me photo of business card with contact info for our building's rep, Buck. He was absolutely no help and was only interested in having me automatically sign-on to an upgrade package. I was not interested and expressed that I would try the basic service first. He tried to intimidate me with "if you need to do important work from home, you will need to upgrade." I held my ground and said how can you expect me to pay for an upgrade without even trying the basic service. At that point, he lost interest. He said he would text me information which was not helpful. I sent him photos of my modem/router setup and said it looked correct. then he finalized his end by punting me to the service number. After multiple calls over the last two months, I am finally up and running. Two calls out of at least a dozen calls let to this success. The first call that was useful was a representative who realized that my setup was wrong. Unfortunately I was at work and he gave me his tech ID # to reference when I could call back before 5pm weekdays in order to complete the setup. Tonight, I called service number despite it being 9pm. It was again a 20 minute wait, but the service rep tells me the activation is the last 9 digits of the apt's account number. It was that simple. I could have been told this by the lazy, self-serving, representative Buck. My work office's IT guy happened to work with me recently on my office computer. I asked him about the basic mediacom package and whether the bandwidth whatnots would be adequate for when I connect remotely from home to work. He said he's never had difficulty working from home and he also has the basic package from mediacom. Shame on you Buck, for trying to pull a fast one on this Yelp customer. MEDIACOM, your company needs to think about its customer service and a more customer friendly service protocol. read more

11/2017 Update: Now the speeds are in the range of 1-5Mbps which is nowhere near the advertised speeds. Also the equipment you rent from mediacom cant even cover a 2 bedroom apartment range wise, when there's literally less than 50 feet between the modem and your bedroom. Great. Looking for alternative providers. I should also mention that the "$75 Gift Card" for signing up has yet to show up even though all documentation required has been sent in. Worse than Comcast? Shaping up to be. Would rate 0 stars if available. 08/2017 Previous: Special sounded great. Except for the fact that there's so many extra charges added after the fact .... literally take their quoted price and multiply it by 1.35 and you'll get an approximation of what your bill will actually be. Also had to pay for installation.. which is a total waste as the building was already wired and I had to re-run my own wiring anyway just to reach where my TV was supposed to be. Terrible. Mediacom is proof that a company can offer a subpar product at an unreasonable rate and have no customer service to speak of but stay afloat. Growing up in Iowa City my parents had Mediacom. We had a landline, cable and internet. I kind of feel like my parents' generation was just so happy to have those things that they didn't think customer service really applied to these "new" and "high tech" services. (I mean our internet was dial up there for a hot minute.) Then in college, Mediacom was just who you went through and you got that super rad one year deal that made every hoop you jumped through with them seem worthwhile because you were on a budget. I mean... we bought lesser quality beer in thirty racks to save a few bucks. So, I think that explains that. It wasn't about quality in college, it was about price. (After a year you'd move and get a new deal at a new residence OR you'd cancel and have your roommate sign up to get the bargain.) After the storm Monday 8/10/2020, I was without power until Wednesday morning. Mediacom had restored my internet Thursday evening around 6 o'clock. I had to call and have them reset my modem to which I was informed all should be working correctly moving forward. Flash forward to Saturday and I lost internet again and they insist it is because of Monday's storm. I was under the impression that was resolved so for them to then state that as the issue is already irritating. Then trying to get any information as to what is causing the outage and how long it will take no information is given other than an outage is occurring. As an electrician, I find it extremely unprofessional for them to 1) turn on my service if their systems are not at 100% and ready to provide the service. 2) to insist that it's being worked on without any detail as to what is being worked on and leaving all of Oi customers in the dark is ridiculous. 3) when confronted with the fact that I am an electrician I was informed the person(s) in the customer service department don't even know what is going on. How can you expect people to trust you as a company when you can't even tell them what is wrong and pretty much to "sit tight". I wish I had another service provider in coralville where I live but I don't so my only option is to wait around for them to get get their heads out of the clouds and actually fix my service. Also according to their twitter page 3% of the people in my area are without wifi. With that being said I live on the complete opposite side of town from where I go to the gym and they also don't have internet. Nor do any of the people in my surrounding area which leads me to believe the 3% without service is also a bold faced lie. I wouldn't trust mediacom as far as I could throw my modem. Mediacom does give decent internet when it works but when it doesn't your left in the dark so far you have no clarity or peace of mind. Individuals who are working from home due to the COVID-19 are stuck losing money because they can't possibly do their jobs. Not only are they way behind from what every power company is, they have no urgency and I have yet to see a single mediacom vehicle in my area which tells me it probably isn't important to them because they know they monopolize my area. Worst Company ever. According to them I have used over 750GB resulting in extra Service Charges. For those of you who don't know, that is about equivalent to 40,000 Hours of Online Game play, or 400 Hrs of Video Streaming. Apparently, I as one person I am capable of breaking the laws of time and space. There aren't 40,000 hrs in a month and I don't play video games or download. I basically only use Facebook, Youtube, and other social networks. These people are con artist and refuse to provide me an over view of how they calculate this use. At one point they told me I used nearly 60GB in one day. These people need to be take to court! Also, I get billed what seems like every 2 weeks. Somehow I always owe more, and even when I pay the full amount I get a bill saying i am past due. They even argued with our bank when they verified we had payed them. I currently am paying over $200 a month for cable, internet, and phone. Actually, I think my last bill was around $260. You would think for that amount of money a person could get decent service. Each time they gave us some lame excuse why they couldn't do it. "you didn't sign an authorization form so I can't hook it up today." Finally they came, and before even looking at our house, told us that they are only allowed to hook up two jacks. Anything more than that, we would have to pay $$$. The trend seems to be every day- around mid day- the internet service likes to shut off. It will stay off for about 5-10 minutes then come on for 2-5 for a couple hours. This drives me nuts since this is the only cable company in the area. We started using Mediacom 2 years ago. We have Basic cable and Internet. It is for my college student. Our rate has gone up now $49 more a month than when we started. Our mediacom bill is now higher than our Comcast bill in Chicago. It is now $132 for basic internet and cable. I asked if we could get a package that was less. The only way we could get a less costly package was to go to their DSL quality speed for internet. The operator did not suggest that. After long combative discussions with technicians at their 800 number I gave up and decided to pay the local office a visit this morning. The line was very long with people with broken equipment and cancelling service. I brought my modem in since the last tech I talked to last night said it was the modem that was faulty. The guy at the counter was very nice and helpful and sent me on my way with a new modem and some new technician numbers if I still had problems. Well, I got home and it still didn't work. I called the number and went through the same bs from these technicians. I'm certain it's the filter or trap on the line and had told them that, but we have to take the long way to find the easy solutions with this company. I now have to wait an additional 2 weeks for what will translate into more crappy service and non working equipment and most likely another month of no service for a 10 minute job that should have never happened in the first place but did because of the inept employees at their call centers and crappy lowgrade equipment. We really need competitors here. And Mediacom needs to get stuffed!! I actually feel sorry for the people who have to work at our local office for having to deal with so many irate and unsatisfied customers. read more

I have been with mediacom for I don't know how long . I work construction so I travel to most states and I always use them . I left in March to Texas for a 10 day spring break trip but due to the covid 19 school was canceled and I ended up staying in Texas since March . I call yesterday to pay my bill bc I accidentally missed last month . So in order to turn it back on I have to pay past due balance .. ok no biggie . Then they tell me since it was connected I have to pay 49 reconnection fee .. once again I get it . But then they tell me that I'll have to pay past due reconnect and then pay first month on the new plan I have to get now . I explain I've been out of town I've been paying and the pandemic kinna has everything out of wack if they can just work with me. They tell me they had options to keep it on when the pandemic started but now I guess they don't . I guess they don't realize that the pandemic is still going on ! So for being a customer for I dunno a decade. I now have to switch to a totally different company in the midst of my kids starting online schooling in the next couple weeks . They were not sympathetic in anyway and was not willing to work w me at all . I told them I have been paying even when not being there . So good job mediacom! I have had two amazing experiences with mediacom customer services. The first time I was house sitting when the cable went out and I called and immediately copped an attitude about how they probably couldn't even help me because I had none of their account information and long story short, they rebooted the cable for me after I gave them the address of the house. I was so happy the the people I was dog sitting for after a loooonnnnng flight home from Ireland did not have to deal with no cable right when they got home and could finally put their feet up. The lady was so respectful and patient even tho I initially was being a real rip. Thanks mediacom! Today I was frustrated because the line up of channels listed first online didn't match up with my digital channels. The lady kindly informed me I needed to scroll all the way down to the bottom and said she was putting two hard copies of channel guides in the mail for me . advice for ppl who live in IC: don't sign up when all the students arrive in September. They promised us coverage anywhere in Iowa City, but when we moved to a location they didn't have cable set up for they tried to charge US $3,000 to pay to install the cables! Then they made us pay for services we COULDN'T USE for 6 months! Finally was able to cancel the contract at that point, but wait... Just got a bill for 5 months of service for the period AFTER our contract was cancelled! The biggest scam and joke of a cable company I've ever heard of. If Mediacom's not careful, they're going to find themselves in another class action lawsuit. The cable wire came down during the August 10th wind storm. First time in 20 years the cable has came down. Not Mediacom's fault. However, When they reconnected the cable a month later it was way to low. I told the tech that but he assured me it was high enough. So 3 days later it was torn down a 2nd time when a truck drove under the cable that stretches across the busy road from the pole to my house. Weeks later it was hooked up a third time and torn down a week later from traffic below the cable line. Still to low. After it was reconnected for the forth time a week later 12-8-20 it was torn down again. Not sure how this company stays in business when they are obviously incompetent. I have an estimate for siding damage for $1400. This company is worthless and if you have any other options for cable or internet I would Highly recommend you do business with another company. I would give ZERO stars if that was an option. read more
