The concept of this restaurant is really brilliant - one menu, you get a salad, fries, and the steak (with seconds of fries and steak if you want it). We were confused the first time we went in, but after going there 4-5 times now, it's actually kind of relieving to just walk in and know what you're getting! We come in, we know exactly what to expect, and they run like a factory because it's all they do all day every day. The food itself is generally delicious. My wife wasn't a steak eater, but somehow this place turned her around. I think it was the smaller thin slices that got her + way it matches the sauce to melt in your mouth. It's also a nice fun atmosphere which I'm sure helps. The fries are always nice and fresh as they're walking around dishing it to tables constantly, and usually the steak is very very good. There were a few times were it was a little bit tougher than others, and that's where it loses a star for me. Since this is the only thing the place serves, I expected the same level of tastiness over and over but a few times the quality dipped. The Bethesda location delivered Thanksgiving meals to seniors over 70 who would be alone for the holiday. What a gracious gesture to those who are home bound due to the corona virus. The food was a wonderful traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cooked carrots, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, and original children's artwork on a Thanksgiving card. Came here for Mother's Day and it was PACKED. All of Bethesda pulled up to this joint fr. I applaud the waiters and chefs for not losing their sanity. I watched them indefinitely chop pieces of bread and steak DIAGONALLY and delicately portion out eggs on a spoon from five feet away. I witnessed a plate of fries fall to their death due to an unfortunate (but inevitable) miscalculation of space. The meal itself is small (by American standards) if u just get steak frites. Don't know what the hype is all about? Went for brunch today. Had to ask for drinks 3 times before they were finally brought. Fruit salad, melons was under ripe and lacked flavor. I have been to the Medium Rare for Bethesda location 3 times, once at the Ballston location, and Cleveland Park at least 4 times. I have to say there's a significant difference between the quality of the foods in the locations, which may need some attention. I came here for dinner with one other friend 2 times, and it has been the same. The sauce isn't as generously poured or given, and the quality of the meat seems lacking for some reason. The service was fine. My most recent visit was for Brunch. First, I want to say that I personally wouldn't go to brunch for Medium Rare again. The items on the menu seem somewhat limited and aren't great. I came with a group of 6 and we ordered the french toast, the regular steak frites they serve for dinner, the benedict, and the steak and eggs. The french toast was fine, but rather an oddity in the menu since it didnt' have anything else. The benedict's appearance looked rather sloppy, but my friend actually enjoyed it so perhaps it's not a bad choice. The steak and eggs were mediocre according to my other friend. However, my biggest disappointment was the steak frites. For some reason, it was a bit cold when it arrived...and there wasn't much sauce given with it. But worst of all...they didn't serve another serving of the steak frites like the usually do. I'm a bit confused as to why that's so...but I have to say I felt robbed from the usual experience. If you want to have the true Medium Rare experience, I would suggest going for dinner. I still love Medium Rare, but I think the Bethesda location could do better. read more

We had an amazing Saturday night dinner. Steak was perfectly cooked and the sauces, fries, salad, add bread were all top notch. Our server Max was attentive and friendly. They don't mention it in the menu but they bring out a second portion of steak and fries for you which is an incredible value. My partner is vegan and the vegan "steak" made from mushrooms was the best vegan option they had ever had. Apple pie for dessert was a perfect finish to the evening. I never go back to any of Medium Rare restaurants. I will tell you, those who are leaving positive reviews about the food, your taste buds are dead. As soon as I had the first bite of the meat, I was 100% disappointed. Nothing special. The meat from Costco and Whole Foods are way much better and cheaper. I did not realize how small the meat portion was from the pictures. Take a close look. You see how thin the meat is. I guess it's 3 oz for the most while the typical "steak" served in the restaurants is at least 8 oz. Not enough seasoning if they did any, that "secret sauce" is just gravy anyone can make at home, just regular fries (again, Five Guys' are much better), and too runny poached egg (the preference is totally subjective though, I used the spoon I got for my coffee to eat them). They don't charge much, however, $24.95 is still too expensive for what you get. Also, I did not get the second piece of meat. Was it because it was brunch? Furthermore, the service was not good. The server did not refill my coffee until I asked (three times). And this is why I don't trust the reviews for the restaurants. read more

Decent beer selection as well as several dessert options (at additional charge). Six of us ate for about $200 with tip. The food was delicious, the waitstaff helpful and friendly, and the environment casual without being raucous. The dining space is small, so call ahead of make a reservation (though we were able to get our table on Saturday night at 1830 with no problem). They do have a weekend brunch, but I haven't tried that, so can't comment. This is a clever addition to the multitude of Bethesda dining options. That said, your host and one of your management members were highly unprofessional. There was no call for rude and even aggressive treatment my friend was given. She asked about being seated and though we had a large group (16 people), all but 2 were there. (They were parking). She was spoken back to in a manner unbecoming a manager. Very short and in a manner that you should never talk customer. Especially when that customer was being very polite. We found the hostess to be very unprofessional as when she wanted us to move, she instructed us to " go wait over by the bar" by waving her hands up over her head and point behinder her. After hearing all the hype, I decided to check out Medium Rare on my last trip home to Bethesda. This innovative concept in the DC region boasts 4 locations, with the Bethesda one being the newest I believe. I was able to snag a 7:15 reservation on OpenTable at the last minute, which was somewhat surprising for a holiday weekend evening. We were running a little bit late, and after calling the restaurant​, they were very accommodating​. When we arrived, we were seated immediately at a table adorned with white butcher paper stamped with the Medium Rare logo emblazoned in red. As it was my first time, the server gave a brief overview of how their pre-fixe menu works. For around $20 bucks per person, you get bread, a salad, and two servings of steak and fries. The initial serving comes pre-plated, and about 10 minutes later, they return to your table carrying additional steak to put on your plate as well as a pan of fresh fries. They definitely have their system down pat--they use a grid diagram they draw on your table with a crayon to denote how each member of your party would like their steak cooked. The service was quick, almost machine-like. We enjoyed the fresh bread, delicious salad (good size), and steak prepared medium. The steak comes sliced and covered in their "secret sauce," which tasted kind-of mushroomy to me. I thought the steak was quite good​ but didn't know the sauce was going to be put on the steak in the kitchen. I was misled​ by seeing the other tables who had a metal container of sauce and ladle, which they bring out when they give you seconds on the steak. Next time, I would ask for sauce on the side from the start, as I wasn't a big fan. The fries were good​ but no better than those that I have had at other steakhouses. At the end, we were offered the dessert menu​ but decided to pass as we were stuffed. My take on this place is that it is a great newer addition to Bethesda. Come here for the value, but don't​ expect the most amazing steak frites you've​ ever had in your life. You won't be disappointed​ by the food, though. I will definitely be back to try the brunch, especially the yummy looking french toast. The one main downside is that for dinner, all they really have is the steak option. I have a lot of friends and family members with dietary restrictions and preferences that I wouldn't​ be able to bring here. Watched them way way over serve a group kids at brunch. I say kids because they may have been 19 at most. Girls were growing up. Could not stand. And I watched one fall on the floor several times. Honestly, I wanted to have so much fun but the manager would not let us. She was so rude as she told me that I had to "sit down and enjoy my brunch" after my first drink at a "bottomless brunch." However, all of my guy friends were fed with champagne bottles, while we were met with eye rolls after every order. Both are prix fixe menus, but I prefer this place for steak dinner because I'd go elsewhere for bottomless brunch. The steak is really delicious and portions are huge - as others have said, during dinner they'll give you a giant slice and then follow up with another equally sized portion after you've finished. If you're still hungry after that, you can get a third portion for an additional $10. They will also bring by additional helpings of frites. Yummy! I've had this place bookmarked for quite sometime now. Just never had the chance of visiting until their Bethesda location came around. Location is good. Parking's not to bad. The menu is preset for around $20 which includes warm rustic bread and sea salted butter, a house salad that's fresh and aromatic from the mustard and steak with frites. The way this restaurant works is QUITE similar to the famous, "Le Relais de I'Entrecote" in Paris, France! What a pleasant surprise! Brought me back to Europe. You get half your steak and frites first time around and then they'll come back around with the 2nd portion. The plus side to this way of serving, food comes out hot the 2nd time around instead of getting to it when it's cooled down. Overall, the food was delicious and you can't beat the price. Downside, the sauce is a little too thick for my liking. The one is Europe is a little bit runnier and flavorful in my opinion. Oh and as far our waiter? He seemed very rushed. This sauce is excellent! But it's much different than the Le Relais de l'Entrecote restaurant in Paris. I think their sauce was heavy in tarragon because it was mostly green not brown. However, this has a wonderful rich taste that includes (I thinkonly guessing) chicken livers, red wine, cream, butter, some tarragon, onion and a touch of garlic. We used to love coming here once a week. Service, food, desserts, drinks were all great. But this time was very disappointing. 1 hour before we got our food. Cold stale bread. Wilted salad. The meat quality and quantity has gone down. My MR was cooked rare. Ordered a diet code but got regular coke.
