This restaurant is still one of my favorites! The service is always on point, the food is fresh and delicious, and they have a lot of healthy options on the menu. Whether you dine in, have a drink/meal at the bar, or order out, you won't be disappointed. This most recent time I went there, I had the veggie harvest bowl, and it was very tasty with just the right amount of sauce and seasoning. We lost our NYAJ near our house 2 years ago. We finally made the trek to this one for happy hour. The food was amazing (as always) and the foccia bread was to die for. But, the best part was Ezra, our server. He did a phenomenal job! We were the only table seated outside and he was constantly on top of the service never leaving us thinking "I wish out server would come by." Best service I have ever had at NYAJ! We had a good walk in brunch experience on a Saturday! Breakfast burrito was excellent but the chicken for the chicken in waffles was definitely dry. The garlic oil for the bread appetizer was a little unbalanced as well. Overall we had good, attentive service and it's a standard American restaurant. Came for Happy Hour and it was amazing! I got a few drinks and got a few happy hour apps and they were so yummy! Our servers name is Dakota and he was absolutely amazing and funny! Stopped in on a whim after taking care of some errands nearby--I'm always up for trying something new, and this place seemed promising after a quick look online. From the outside, it looked like we were in for a good experience, even though it was still early, just before lunch. We were welcomed right away by a friendly host who seated us in the bar area. He mentioned there was a specials menu for the month, and when we didn't have one at the table, he quickly brought it over and walked us through the options before returning to his station. From our spot, I noticed a full bar, a pizza oven, happy hour menu with tons of options, and lots of seating. The bartender came by soon after to take our drink order and happily answered questions about the menu. I ordered my go-to Appletini with cherries, and was thrilled when he brought extra cherries just like I asked. It was delicious--refreshing without being too heavy on the vodka. Like the host, he was also kind and attentive. Someone who seemed to be the manager stopped by briefly as well and was equally pleasant. We started with the bang bang shrimp appetizer. It wasn't quite like what I've had at other places, but it was still decent--I liked the unique touch of the seaweed and sesame seed garnish. My husband got the pulled pork mac and cheese, and I tried the mustard chicken pizza. While I appreciated the flavors, I wasn't a fan of the focaccia-style crust. Who doesn't look for comfort when the weather forecast is dismal? So, I decided to pick up dinner at Not Your Average Joe's. They have a great selection of meals to go, from their mustard chicken, to Caesar salads, to burgers and more. The front desk was very nice and helpful. It has a great vibe with the lights, large bar area with large tv screens, the comfortable booths and twinkle fairy lights are all really lovely. Kudos to the manager for throwing in this delicious focaccia bread and oil and cheese dip. The bread was tasty and freshly made. The olive oil, cheese, and peppers complimented nicely. I ordered the Caesar salad with steak tips. Usually, when I eat there the salads are gigantic. This one was very filling and delicious. The steak tips were a bit past medium, but they were tender and well seasoned. I had plenty left for another meal. I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely go back. Went here with my kids Sunday night and it took 10 minutes just for the server to come over. Turns out there was a medical emergency before and she apologized and we thought all would be fine. We put in our drink and food order right away...and didn't get anything for another 10 minutes. We got our wine, but still hadn't gotten any water and had to ask for that again. Then the food came out and my youngest's order was wrong. We told the food runner, and also asked for water again! When our waitress finally came to ask how things were, we updated her and also asked if a drink came with the kids menu order and she said "yeah, but you didn't tell me what you wanted!"! Ugh, what?! We told her, also asked for water again, asked for the fruit for the kids menu (instead of the fries we didn't order), and the green beans that still weren't out. By the time the side of beans came out, I had already finished my meal. So for the food, I ordered the scallops and while it looks like a big order, it was a lot of couscous and 6 very small scallops. It was very sweet and not very good because of that. Also, it was $35 which is very high considering the quality...could've had a much better quality dish in a nicer restaurant for that price (or less)...and I have! My daughter got the chicken piccata and said it was good. We had to flag down the waitress for the bill and when she dropped it off, she didn't even say thank you or apologize for all the delays and mistakes. We definitely will not be back. read more

Ordered a French Onion Soup and the Fish and Chips. Soup was fine, but the fish was absolutely terrible. Smelled very off and tasted like it was fried in a JiffyLube's garage trash can. Fries had a similar aftertaste and a cold center. When I signaled my waiter and told her "this isn't good", her first response was to ask "it's the oil, isn't it?" I hadn't even mentioned the specific problem. She took it back immediately and told me that she "finally got them to change the frying oil" as she handed me my check. This is clearly a known problem and a serious health code violation. I absolutely do not recommend this place whatsoever. read more

I got the spinach and feta omelette with home fries. It was good as well. It was a little on the BBC side, but I enjoyed it. This would be five stars without exception if the review was only on the stellar, attentive service offered by a very charming lad named Shey. I have acquired a new food allergy and made a special request in ordering from a special and excellent menu only offered on Mondays and Tuesdays. I would strongly recommend it unless you have a food allergy. My request seemed similar enough even to our very caring server, but the manager refused to serve an option of a chicken dish without the breading/crusting although there was no difference in price. This seemed very disrespectful to a customer's health concerns and my only encounter with restaurant any where in the world that just did not care. I thought it was good especially considering there was 1 person working the bar and servicing most of the tables. Good diverse menu for food and cocktails. Have been coming to this location for a few years, I enjoy an occasional beer after work. The beer is good and cold, but it always smells like sewage in here. Kinda push through it, but a few diffusers wouldn't hurt. Feel like all the employees are just used to it cause it's incredibly noticeable every time you enter the restaurant. Surprisingly this was my first time here. Had a pretty solid experience. The staff were friendly and the food came out quick and was hot. I got the vodka pasta I believe with chicken but next time I will opt to not have the chicken on it or switch to shrimp as I feel like the chicken did not add much additional flavor. It's been a few years since we have had dinner here. I live a mile away. The good: Our server, Eleanor W was an excellent, caring server. The crab cakes appetizer was good. The rosemary scallops were ok, but not a good value for $35.00 A few scallops did not have the abductor muscle removed, some were chewy. The bread was very good. The bad: The table was 90% cleaned with crumbs still on the table. I resolved. BOTH sets of napkin wrapped silverware had old food and debris still on them. Server resolved. The Crab-Stuffed Flounder took a long time to come out. When it finally did come out, it was badly / obviously undercooked. I sent it back to the kitchen, permanently. The night manager/supervisor expressed their apologies for the deficiencies in our dining experience. The head chef came to our table and expressed the same concerns and owned up to the issues which we appreciated. We weren't charged for the Crab-Stuffed Flounder. 15% was taken off the bill which we appreciated. We asked for and were provided take home bread & cheese/olive oil @ courtesy. read more

I had an unfortunate experience with the ahi tuna poke bowl. The tuna had no flavor - was missing the ponzu sauce, had oxidized so it was not fresh, and was warmer in temperature than my other vegetables. I do NOT recommend ordering this. I did not discover this restaurant until I moved away from the area, but have eaten here several times when in town to visit friends or family. I have always had a good meal here. I typically get a sandwich or a pizza and they have all been great. The service is good, the food is great, and the prices are in line with any other restaurant. I recently ate here on a Friday night and was surprised it was not busier. I will definitely come back here the next time I am in town. read more

This place served up not your average dinner but it's nothing fancy. My jambalaya was good, and the crab cakes are the way they're meant to be. You have a generous ball of crab meat, not much filler compared to others. The meatloaf looked great. My friend said it was good. The "peanut butter thing" dessert tasted like an Oreo cookie infused with peanut butter. The size makes it a great sharable. We put it to the test by my peanut butter-loving mother. She said it was good. Great job making our food and thanks to our waiter for good service. I appreciate him splitting my order so I can share it. It wasn't that busy on the evening we came. It located off the intersection the Old Georgetown Rd and Democracy Blvd. it was at the corner of the shopping center building. We were standing inside for more than three minutes, then a staff finally came up to greet us. When I looked around, there were less than ten tables seated. It then took another five more minutes for another staff to take our beverages. Ten more minutes to take orders. Twenty minutes to serve dishes. Their staff had no intention to earn our business. The pizza was very dried to chew. The sandwich bread was slightly burnt. The grilled chicken was blackened. The jambalaya was too salty. I would consider this restaurant as a casual sit in restaurant with decent food. I would pair this with other chain restaurants such as Chili's and Applebees. You will get consistent service and food with an overall casual dining experience. Venue: I say it's a smart mix of casual restaurant with a section of a sports bar. They have plenty of seats and the place is very clean. The hosts are pleasant and the washer rooms are kept clean, if that matters. The high glass windows adds a spacious feeling as well. Food: Now this is might be contentious because their serving size however the food selection are not quite adventurous for the price they introduce. I understand Bethesda is an expensive area however for me if you deliver unique and adventurous selections, I would not care about the price. From my last meal, I had the tomato soup; it was more thicker than I would've minded. It had more filling (probably cheese or bread crumbs) that made it more of a sauce than a soup. I do not complain but the concept of a healthy tomato soup was lost a bit. For the main dish I had the Cobb salad. I truly enjoyed that actually., The charred white meat chicken was perfect. It complemented the salad, which was not overly sauced/seasoned. Again it was a big serving I had to take home as left over. Misc: They are located in an outlet so they have plenty of parking so that is not a worry. A+ for that. Conclusion: My only reason for not giving them a 5 stars is because the price vs uniqueness vs quantity. For the price I was hoping for a venture outside of typical American food. We have had 2 visits to this location and both have been great. In both cases we had the kids and out of town guests. The restaurant is designed really nicely and feels like a place that you want to hang out and have a good time. The staff there was friendly, helpful and attentive on both visits. They do have a kids menu that has Pizza, Mac & Cheese, Mini Hamburger, Chicken Tenders and one of two more items. Our daughters (11 and 9) got the hamburger and chicken tenders which they both enjoyed. For us adults we tried the Crispy Bang Bang Shrimp and Ahi Tuna Wontons and both were really good. For one of my main courses I had the Sirloin Tips and it was just ok. The 2nd time I had the Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl and that was amazing. Their drinks are really good. We had the Silver Cadillac on our last visit and served in such an unique and interesting way with black salt on the outside of the glass and Grand Marnier floating in a inside-out half of lime. This was one of the best margaritas that I have had. Overall we have had two great experiences here and will definitely be back. read more

We dropped into Not Your Average Joe's over the weekend with a small group of six people. The menu has plenty of options, including a gluten sensitive menu. Service was lacking from the start. It took over two hours to eat lunch. The waitress seemed less than knowledgeable about the food and allergens, so beware if you have dietary restrictions. The food was good when it was accurate. Our group had burgers and sandwiches. We ordered a kid's gluten free Mac n cheese that came without cheese. Mashed potatoes are actually garlic mashed potatoes. Not your average Joes is like airport restaurant minus the airport. Unambiguously boring but somehow ridiculously overpriced. I've been twice thinking maybe something had changed because the food was ok the first time but the service sucked. Came back for the second time, 6 months later, slightly better service (the bartender rocked but the food still came out slow even though the place was relatively empty) but the same ok food, just more expensive. Happy hour (M-F 3-6) no longer includes food. Just 30% off their ridiculously priced drinks. $16 for a G&T? During happy hour? Blasphemy. I mean, it was good, with freshly muddled cucumber but still.
