So this was an AWFUL experience! Love being verbally harassed by men who think they can talk down to women. We were seated 30 mins late for our reservation, totally reasonable on Easter Sunday and expected! We were enjoying our brunch, but were rudely rushed by the staff as they said we only had an hour and a half to eat. It was awkward, but understandable again given the busy day, so we wrapped up our brunch as we were seated for only an hour and 15 mins at that time. However, this was when a very, shall I say pleasant couple, approached our table and verbally harassed us. This couple claimed we were seated at "their table," rudely confronted us, pushed chairs at us, and yelled at us until we left. Apparently the staff had threw us "under the table" (got em) and told this really intense family that we were taking up their table. Didn't know people owned tables there! We loved this place, especially the simplicity of the menu. You have to keep in mind that they have a fixed menu and the entree is steak. So...you only have to let them know how you like your steak cooked and the dessert. You start with bread, salad, the entree and then dessert. They serve you twice. 2 steaks and frites (fries). I have zero idea why I hadn't visited this restaurant before. Perhaps it was the odd menu (which today made perfect sense), or that I thought I needed more choices on a menu - it doesn't matter - I was completely satisfied with my first experience at Medium Rare. As others have mentioned, the starter salad is refreshing and lightly dressed. The steak was cooked just as I ordered (medium rare!). I can sometimes get picky about French fries, but I nearly inhaled these. They're very good. What is it about the combination of French fries and beef gravy? I had no room for dessert, but my friend had the apple pie, which was devoured before I got a chance to ask for a taste. I guess it must have been good. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with a casual style. I felt completely comfortable, and the great service contributes to that comfort. It is rare that a night out with my lovely wife for a lovely dinner ends up being NOT a lovely evening...until we experienced Medium Rare in Bethesda. The night of horrors started when we arrived five minutes early for our reservation. It ended up being another twenty minute wait before we were finally seated. We were then escorted to a table in a dark, back corner of the restaurant. The table for two was, and I am not exaggerating, considerably smaller than a folding TV tray. The restaurant was so loud that the server taking our order had to lean all the way in for me to hear her and for her to take our drink ad apppetizer order. While we understood it to be Homecoming for several local schools, that evening several other patrons had complained about the noise as well, but still nothing was being done. So now, seated in the dark, crowded, loud restaurant, we had to wait approximately 15-20 minutes before our drinks appeared. Shortly after getting our drinks, our appetizer and salad and entree arrived all at the same time. The young, inexperienced server was busy NOT paying any attention to doing his job but was instead busy staring at all the girls in their homecoming dresses. When he got to our extremely small table, still NOT paying attention, he managed to serve me by pouring my entire entree upside down into my lap successfully ruining my irreplaceable silk shirt which was left to me by my deceased father. NOT ONE wait staff came to my aid so I stood in that dark back corner of the restaurant wearing my dinner for nearly 20 minutes before the general manager came to apologize. And even though they had sent me on my way with a cold carryout meal after I provided all my personal information, still NO ONE bothered to reach out to me about how they would handle the situation the following day. After I waited 4-5 days with no contact from the restaurant manager or owner, I finally reached out to the restaurant and was told that one of the owners, Mark Bucher, who was away in London, would contact me in 2-3 days upon his return. Still, after 3 days, I never heard from him. So I called the restaurant yet again to speak to the owner. Mr Bucher said that I should bring the shirt to him and he would take it to their "expensive" dry cleaner to be cleaned. I informed him that I had already taken it to a very reputable dry cleaner because the incident occurred over a week before. Unfortunately, even after considerable effort by my dry cleaner, there were still residual stains. I told Mr Bucher that if he really wanted to make it right, he could. I think that having had the horrible experience of my entree being dumped on my lap, having my shirt ruined and the fact that I had to contact the restaurant...all of this was more than enough of an inconvenience for me. Why should I have to run back and forth with my shirt, make attempts to contact the owner when no effort whatsoever was made by the owner himself to apologize or fix things had been made until I called him? As a business owner, I definitely would have contacted the customer immediately and made every effort to make it right by the customer - either by offering to cover the cost to replace the shirt or even by giving a voucher for a free dinner. But that NEVER happened. Even weeks later, NOTHING has been done. NOTHING has been made right. Based on my personal experience, everyone should know that this is one restaurant that should be avoided. My real rating is ZERO or negative stars and the REAL words I wanted to write for this rating could NOT be written here. read more

Not Welcomed. I just moved to Bethesda and wanted to visit as many restaurants as possible. I heard great reviews about the food and atmosphere at the DC location. So my girlfriend and I visited the Bethesda location - since it was within walking distance from my house to experience the food and atmosphere. We walked in, hoping that we didn't need a reservation. We did not - that was a plus. However, as soon as we walked in, the waiter looked at us as if we were lost. We asked for a table for two. He said ok, and walked around the entire restaurant looking for a table for two. Now the restaurant wasn't crowed so we passed several tables. At first I thought, maybe the tables he passed were reserved, but the look on his face was not of this table is taken, but this isn't the right spot for them. Now, if you ever been to this Medium Rare, you would know that the place is small. It made me feel really uncomfortable - but I thought it was just me. We finally sat down and my girlfriend looked at me and said, "Is it me, or do you feel like we are not welcomed?" With that being said, we gathered our things, left and went to Woodmont Gill. The place we know has great food, atmosphere, and most importantly - makes everyone feel welcomed. Will not go to this location again. I will try the Medium Rare in DC - just to compare the two management styles. read more

Seems a lot of easily impressed people reviewing here. We went for dinner. Outdoor seating nice. Service OUTSTANDING. Food, just "meat & potatoes". Fries were so cold we had to ask for replacement. Wine just mediocre. I wont go back. This is Bethesda, MD. Market here demands MUCH MORE. A menu with just one item is not the norm, nor acceptable given that the one item is just "so-so" taste wise. Worst display of management I have ever seen. I visit this bar at least once a week to unwind with the bartender and a few beers. Not only did the manager on duty cut me off while in the middle of my sentence, what she had to say was disgusting and shocking. She interrupted me by saying, "seriously? I cannot with you guys." I felt embarrassed that I may have been speaking too loud. Either way, the news that I was sharing was amazing! I was offered a permanent position at my law firm as an attorney! I wanted to share this news with the bartender! The manager then reprimanded the bartender for speaking to me. She then announced that the bartender's friends were no longer allowed to sit at the bar. I am not just a friend of the bartender, I am also a paying customer and would have been expected to be treated as any other paying guest at the restaurant. This made me feel uncomfortable and even embarrassed. I closed out my check and left, as I no longer felt welcomed. I am not sure how this company expects to expand their regular clientele when the bartender and their regulars are made to feel uncomfortable when forming a connection. My husband and I live in the building above Medium Rare. We decided to try both their dinner and brunch. Both experiences were either lacking or absolutely horrible. Brunch: We were one of about 4 tables for our entire meal all cramped into one corner of the restaurant. My husband ordered the eggs benedict with steak and portabella. I've never seen an egg white that under cooked. A runny yolk is acceptable for a benedict, but not an egg that looked like it was cooked less then 2 minutes. His steak and portbella consisted mostly of portabella and very few pieces of chewy over cooked steak. I ordered the french toast with sausage. My sausage was slightly warm on the outside and stone cold on the inside. I'm sure that's safe! The french toast tasted like it had been cooked in a vat of steak grease. My husband's fruit bowl came out with a dead fruit fly at the bottom of the bowl and a few more following the waiter from the kitchen. My parfait consisted of cheap sugary yogurt, no fresh fuit, and liquid syrup. I basically picked the granola and didn't eat the rest. I also couldn't eat my french toast seeing as it tasted like oily burnt steak. Dinner: It didn't matter what temperature we ordered our steaks at, because they both came out well done and chewy. If you're going to open a steak based restaurant at least bring in a chef that knows how to cook a steak properly! I could have shrugged this off as the chef just being super busy with mutliple orders, but No! Once again, we were one of only a hand full of tables. There was seriously no excuses. Basically, this restaurant's chefs didn't know how to execute the two most basic cooking skills... poaching an egg and knowing how to properly cook a steak. From hearing what other people in our building are saying about this restaurant, this place needs to fire all of the cooks and managers, and rehire properly trained individuals. It has a great location, beautiful interior and could be doing so much more business if it hired knowledgeable indivduals that checked food quality before serving customers. read more

This is my second review of this location. I went to brunch and I was really disappointed!!! First, I didn't like my dish but that's not a huge deal breaker, it happens. I asked for something else, apologizing profusely bc I didn't wanna be that guy (girl). The waiter said sure and about 15 min later I saw a busser bring out what looked like my order (I had asked for the sauce on the side)... and drop it on someone else's table. Ok oops her bad whatever. BUT THEN... my waiter came out, saw the mistake, took my order, beelined toward the kitchen, TURNED AROUND, AND PUT THE SAME FOOD in front of me. Gross!!! Pretty sure that's a health code violation in at least some states. I'm sure he knew he was wrong bc the manager came out about 5 min later. I told her and she brought me a new plate. He continued our service with minimal contact. They should've probably given us a new server and comped our meal from a customer service standpoint. But they did not. They didn't take off one dime in fact. Bonus, some dude unapologetically backed into my car while I was sitting outside eating. Two stars because the parfait was really good and the service was ok until our food came. I won't be going back to this location even though it's closest to my place. Guess I'll have to give brunch @ Cleveland Park a shot. read more

It pains me to give such an awesome restaurant 3 stars. I've been coming to this location since it opened in Bethesda. Pre COVID service was amazing!! My spouse and I come often sometimes 3 weekends in a row lol currently the service is just as good as TGI Fridays Which is very sad as we came here specifically because our waiter/waitress's were amazing better than the locations in DC in our opinion!!! Very attentive , I mean I couldnt Take a sip of water without it being refilled. Now you go , your server comes, rushes your order , writes on the table and leaves you be until the salad arrives. im not sure what happened service wise for this location but I really hope it improves. oh , food is ALWAYS amazing regardless of service. My only complaint was the service, after your initial order they aren't good about checking back on their tables. This has happened the last two times I've been to this location. Medium Rare's menu is limited to one item -- Steak with a "secret" (and delicious) sauce, fries, bread, and a salad. I've never dined in-house at Medium Rare, but I am a regular, if infrequent, delivery customer via DoorDash. Given the narrow focus of the restaurant and that it has chosen to avail itself of ever-proliferating delivery services, one would hope that some thought would be given to delivering their specialty under absolutely optimal conditions -- i.e., as hot as possible. Such is not the case. DoorDash, it would seem, delivers its orders as presented by the restaurant. Medium Rare packages its orders in plastic containers, boxes and bags. Without insulation, your food is going to arrive tepid at best. Upon reheating, the fries become soggy and the sauce separates. I don't expect Medium Rare to provide relatively expensive insulated packaging for each delivery order, but I would hope they would insist that the delivery service provide at least the same level of heat retention packaging that many pizzerias seem to manage. We tried to go again over the weekend and were basically laughed at by the hostess who said "they were about get 150 people coming in the next hour" so we'd just have to wait...while we stared at 4 empty tables. I'm not sure the restaurant even holds 150 people! What a pretentious brat! I'll probably try it again because their food really is good and the other 3 times I've been either to this one or their other 2 locations have been great. I am on a strict diabetic diet and emailed the owner, Mark Busher, in advance, to see if the restaurant would allow me to order champagne (instead of mimosa at the bottomless brunch) and he responded quickly indicating "Yes, for Sure", so I gathered some friends and made the trek from Northern Virginia to Bethesda. We arrived to find the venue was about 1/2 full, late in the Brunch hour (1:30 PM). The restaurant was very loud and acoustics seem bad as we could hear every plate clink even over the din of classic rock music. The waitress was friendly and enthusiastic and educated us on how brunch worked. I requested a glass of champagne and she stated that was not possible as the drinks are pre-mixed. I explained that Mr. Busher had assured me the restaurant would accommodate my request. She spoke to the manager and told me again, it was impossible. I asked to speak to the manager and showed him the email from the owner and after a long and awkward conversation in front of my friends, he begrudging indicated he would give me one glass of champagne but only one. If he had offered me bottomless 1/2 pours or even 1/4 pours, I probably would have ordered only 1 - 2 over the course of Brunch - I am very limited on how much alcohol I can drink as well, and I was also the driver on this outing. It was not that I wanted a lot of alcohol but the priniciple - I paid for bottomless and outraged that the restaurant would break the commitment of the owner on a seemingly reasonable request. It ruined the spirit of our girls' brunch and made me feel cheap and embarrassed in front of my friends. However, it got worse from there - I had researched Medium Rare on Gluten Free websites and all the websites indicated Medium Rare was 100% Gluten Free except their bread and French Toast. I ordered the steak benedict from the menu and nowhere on the menu did it mention that it was served over bread. My steak was served completely covered in the "secret sauce" (the sauce was quite good) and the steak was very tender so I didn't need a knife. However, after a few bites, I discovered something soggy and mealy underneath the steak. I lifted the steak and found a grey spongy mess of what appeared to be some type of toast soaked in juice and sauce. I do not have Celiac's disease (gluten allergy). I can't eat bread because it spikes my blood sugar, but if I had Celiac, it would have been enough to cause a significant allergy! I take responsibility - I should have verified with the waitress - my fault - but I was rattled from the champagne disagreement. And the bread was so soggy and disgusting, I don't understand why the restaurant would think it added value to the meal. I emailed the owner about the fact that the restaurant would not honor his promise to me and received the standard "I'm sorry we didn't live up to your expectations..." from Mr. Busher If I owned a restaurant and promised a patron something and the restaurant refused to fulfill the promise, I would have had a much stronger reaction than a generic "mea culpa." I had heard great things about Medium Rare before trying it. But if a restaurant can not honor a simple promise made by the owner, it reflects very poorly on the restaurant and the owner. read more

I came to this location with a party of 16 for a birthday brunch and the service was impeccable. The staff was very kind and accommodating. They even added two more seats for us at the last minute. The service is fast and our waiter was constantly filling up our glasses. The food was nothing short of amazing and everyone was very happy with their meals. Highly recommended! read more

The portions were OK, but I'd have preferred more bread and potatoes, and the option of sauce on the side for my fries without having to ask. The steak itself was average in flavor.
