    Black sugar boba
    Sho R.

I stopped by on a Saturday evening. There was a good crowd. Mango pomelo sago was the favorite thing I had here. I added a scoop of ice cream. Mango was sweet. I also had a Black sugar boba which was ok.

Came to Meet Fresh after eating dinner nearby. We were craving something sweet and cold and ended up getting the mango and strawberry shaved ice, coco sago special, herbal jelly with tofu pudding, and passionfruit sorbet to try. We were splitting between 8 people and this was the perfect dessert to share. Loved the tofu pudding and herbal jelly which is a great combo if you want dessert but something not too sweet. We enjoyed the shaved ice too which was huge! It's on the pricer side for dessert - portions are meant for sharing though so it's a nice treat.

Definitely a "leave half of it behind" kind of place. Unfortunately, most of what we ordered was pretty mid, and we ended up leaving a good portion of the food behind. The ordering machine asking for a tip before you've even received anything was also a little much. There wasn't really any customer service involved in the process to begin with. And then there's the 35¢ charge for a plastic to-go bag. I understand charging for bags, but when you're already paying for takeout, it feels a bit excessive. Overall, not a place I'd go out of my way to visit. There are plenty of better options for the price.

Good selection of food and drinks. Came here around 2:30 PM. Very slow, maybe like two parties inside. Three staff members at the cashier. It was very dark inside and pretty quiet. I saw lots of signs everywhere which felt a bit overwhelming and welcomed. Also there's a sign that's says no mask, no visit and another sign you see from the inside, infront of the door says vaccine. So that made me super uncomfortable just the vibe and energy. Also there way they gave us the egg waffles were just paper in a bag. We asked for the box that other places give out and they said they never gave out boxes. I pointed at their shelves that it was those boxes and they said it was decorative... omg... my mom and I are (wtheck) inside. The santa clara and cupertino and livermore hands out those boxes to put the egg waffles in them. I have no other comments after this....

Not really a fan of Meet Fresh. The desserts aren't really sweet enough for me. On Saturday night at 7:30 pm there was a long line. People were ordering at kiosk and counter but still slow. Plenty of tables. There was a slip hazard with water on floor. I got the chocolate waffle and it was fine. Nothing wrong with it just kind of plain.

I've honestly lost count of how many times I've been here. It's always lively, but the dine-in area is spacious, so I can usually relax without having to wait for a seat. Whenever I'm craving Chinese desserts, I love how many options they have. Since there are so many great restaurants nearby, I often stop by here after dinner for dessert. One of the best parts is that you can customize your dessert with your favorite toppings and make it exactly how you like. You can place your order using the self-order machines, but if you're unsure, there's also a staffed register. The staff are always kind and helpful, which makes the experience even better.

A large space to hangout, but food was subpar. I was excited to get the egg waffle (been missing egg waffle from Hong Kong), but once it was ready, not only did it taste stale but it wasn't warm and crispy. If you had an air fryer or toaster oven, it would have been easy to warm this up. I just don't understand what took so long for a 30 minute wait time on food & drinks. Drinks were obviously hard to mess up on and easiest to prepare. Tofu pudding was okay on taste, but bad on presentation. Instead of the traditional larger pieces of tofu, it's mashed up into smaller pieces. I'm glad it was served warm, but I was disappointed w/ the execution. Not horrible, but it wasn't great either. A lot of improvements needed on quality/taste/presentation for me to come back for dessert here.

Hot Red Bean Soup Signature Plus Almond Pudding

I usually love Meet Fresh locations due to the cafe seating and fun desserts we can try but this location did not compare well with other locations I've visited. I've been to this location 3 times so this is a review of my overall impression of the San Mateo Meet Fresh. The times I've come, there is never a cashier taking orders; everything is on a single kiosk. This makes the wait very long to even order because each party takes awhile to key in their orders (+ if they want to customize their bowls). Got a Hot Red Bean Signature Soup with added almond pudding. Almond pudding is always 10/10 imo. I knew the pudding comes cold and I keyed it in as a side order (not wanting it directly in the soup) but when we picked it up, it was floating in the soup...... We picked it up as soon as our number was called and the "hot" soup was cold due to the almond pudding. The other time my party got a signature shaved ice but the ice had no flavor at all compared to other locations that had a creamy taste to the ice. We saw multiple trays at the tray disposal with heaps of untouched shaved ice probably due to this reason. I still like the amount of seating space and the tables are big enough to study at/play games as well. But def not as great quality of food as the other locations.

    * foodie DEETS here * - 03.22.25's visit, review #211 Friend wanted tea instead of more alkie after din nearby. Thought it'd be a good idea since I've had lil cravings for boba lately from not having any in forever. We actually sat down at another spot a couple stores down, but he switched to check it out here instead. I've tried the chain in the South Bay b4 & at-home frozen taro balls. T L ; D R . . . Located in San Mateo Downtown, parking is plentiful but availability is limited. Noise level is loud. There was also a line to order at the self serve kiosk. Tofu pudding (5/5): portions are humongous. Toppings were generous. Flavor wasn't too sweet. The rice balls had a good balance of soft and firm making them quite chewy. Tap to pay is accepted. Service takes a while but the food is so yummy and generous. Overall, Meet Fresh is a good Asian dessert place.

    Icy Grass Jelly Signature
    Jackson C.

Meet Fresh offers a variety of Asian dessert dishes Tofu Pudding, Grass Jelly, Hot Red Bean Soup, etc. There are a number of locations across the Bay Area and the location in San Mateo is average at best compared to some of the other locations I've been to. For example, I think the location located at Cupertino is more superior. First off, the place is often empty. Not the best vibe for a hangout place. You start by using one of the self service kiosk to order. Second, the quality of the desserts is mediocre. Today, we ordered the signature cold grass jelly. You get some chewy mochi balls mixed with grass jelly and a sweet syrup. While the dessert tasted ok, it did not give me the impression desiring more.

Black Sugar Boba Milky Shaved Ice (Medium)

I'm not sure how it managed to happen, given how long they've been around and how many times I've…read moreeaten around 3rd Ave, but I had no idea Dessert Republic even existed, let alone been here. Presumably, never walking down their block of the Main St. alley had a lot to do with it, but who knows how much longer it would've taken if not for my friends suggesting we come here for dinner. Which is kind of ironic, considering the name of this place! While nothing about the outside of Dessert Republic really stands out, the decor inside is great. It may not be all that flashy nor have much of an IG aesthetic, but I like how it has a Hong Kong/Chinatown alley sort of look to it. As for the menu, true to their name, there's no shortage of desserts to choose from, whether it be hot desserts, like glutinous rice balls, sweet tofu, or egg pudding, cold desserts, like mixed fruits, sago, or ice cream sundaes, egg puffs, and crepes. In addition, they also have a bunch of regular food options, from snacks and dim sum items, to rice plates, noodle soups, and even lomo saltado. -- (#A03) POPCORN CHICKEN Not terrible, but not popcorn chicken either. Rather, this felt more like the salt & pepper porkchop dishes I've had in the past - the batter was thick, the chicken was unmarinated, it was seasoned with just salt and pepper, and it was topped with cut peppers instead of crispy basil. -- (#S01) BRAISED BRISKET & WONTON NOODLE SOUP Overall, this was a mixed bag. On the plus side, the bowl was decently loaded, the wontons were plump, and it had chunks of beef tendon, which were tender. On the other, while the noodles were fine, the veggies were way overcooked and the beef was chewy. -- (#M08) SUPER STRAWBERRY - Strawberry Freeze, Aloe Jelly, and Strawberries Topped with Strawberry Ice Cream Undoubtedly, this had a lot of strawberry flavor to it. Even though the strawberry freeze didn't do a ton for me, especially as it melted, I liked how well the aloe jelly, strawberries, and ice cream complemented each other. As far as service goes, I've seen some folks mention running into issues, but I've actually found it to be entirely unremarkable, for better or worse. Each time I've been here, the workers haven't really gone beyond the basics (take orders, bring out dishes, take care of checks, etc.), but I never really expect anything more than that either. Still, they do seem to be relatively friendly and get orders out decently fast, which certainly counts for something. Since I've clearly only had a small handful of what their menu has to offer, there's the distinct possibility (probability?) that I haven't had the best of what Dessert Republic has to offer. However, based on what I've ordered and my friends' egg puffs and sweet tofu that I've tried (both were fine), the desserts here definitely seem to be the safer bet overall. Which is handy since they stay open so late, especially on Friday and Saturday nights (until 1am).

Granted, my friends probably hyped it up a bit too much while we were waiting in line (I think it was already their second or third time going), but, regardless, I thought it was just okay. Fast forward all of these years later and I have to say - whether it's because my tastes have changed or because I found a flavor that I really liked, this place is so much better than I remember! With so many boba joints and dessert shops nearby, it's pretty easy to overlook Beard Papa's. Being located on the edge of downtown/3rd Ave certainly doesn't help, but, for something quick and convenient (and different), they're a decent option. While the menu may not look all that extensive, it has a fair amount to offer when you consider how you can mix and match your choice from their near dozen cream puffs/eclairs and handful of cream fillings. Add to that the occasional seasonal/featured flavors they'll have and their assortment of lava cakes and cheesecakes and there's plenty to choose from! -- ST. VALENTINE'S RASPBERRY ECLAIR - Raspberry Cream Custard-filled Eclair with White Chocolate Coating and Raspberry Frosting This was a seasonal offering (admittedly, an older one), but if they ever added this to their regular menu, I'd easily get this again. Surprisingly, this actually wasn't super sweet and I loved how well the raspberry and white chocolate flavors complemented each other. -- GREENT TEA ECLAIR WITH VANILLA CUSTARD FILLING Not nearly as good as the St Valentine's Eclair, but way better than the original Vanilla Cream Puff I had before. The frosting had a strong hit of green tea to it, and the custard was fine, but, this time, the cream puff felt a little stale/dry-ish. While I definitely enjoyed Beard Papa's cream puffs/eclairs more than I did before, I can't say I've loved everything about this location. Mainly, the service here has been a little uneven - the first time we stopped in, the guy behind the counter looked really annoyed with having to help us and seemed like he was dying for us to leave (FWIW, we walked in almost an hour before they closed). Our last visit, though, the workers were friendly and super fast, as they handed us our eclair before we could even finish paying. Even though my opinion of Beard Papa's has definitely improved, since I never really crave cream puffs/eclairs and limit my sweets to the occasional scoop(s) of ice cream or milk tea, I can't say Beard Papa's is on the verge of getting into my regular dessert rotation. However, given how much I enjoyed their St. Valentine's Raspberry Eclair, I'm definitely more open to coming back than ever before if/when should the desire come along, especially since they don't have those same long lines anymore! THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up for now.
