Second piece in case I happened to get one that randomly had little fruit. Two Tbs. filling; most just goo.

I bought a Mehaffies strawberry rhubarb pie at Fulton Farms today, and wow. What a massive disappointment. The crust is soft, yet tough & crumbly, tasteless, and too thick. There is very little filling. What there is contains almost no fruit. In one average-sized piece (3 1/4" across the top edge--about 1/8 to 1/6 of an 8-9" pie, depending on how you measure it), there are exactly four small pieces of rhubarb, and two pieces of strawberry. The rest is all just red-dyed, sugary, starchy-tasting goo. The filling has almost no flavor. It tasted very vaguely fruity, but the rhubarb was undetectable by taste. I think if you gave someone a bite while they were blindfolded, they would not be able to identify what it's supposed to be. I'd heard of this brand and thought it was supposed to be decent, but this pie is just awful. It's a rare treat for me to buy something like this, and I'll be throwing it away; it's not even fit to eat. Low-grade, industrial, tasteless. $13 totally wasted.

    Strawberry-rhubarb pie

If you like strawberry-rhubarb pie, try Mehaffie's. Soft crust sprinkled with a dusting of sugar and the filling was a great balance of sweet (not too sweet) and tart. If the other pies are this good, I think we've found our shop.

Called in the day of to get a pie order in- Pineapple with crunch top, and the owner made it happen! 2nd time coming here while driving through town and both times it has been great. Love coming here to get fresh pies. Our whole family loves it.

I read that Partial to Pie was voted the best pie in Dayton and best in Ohio .. i can only assume they have not had the pleasure of visiting Mahaffies. I whole heartedly recommend Mahaffies.. i have been a fan of theirs for years. Recently i met the owner and the family... he is as sweet as his pies. The whole family were so nice. I learned his son is responsible for the cheese cake.

Amazing service! Amazing people! Very friendly! They have an amazing collection of pies. We got plain cheesecake. No doubt it was amazingly flavored! But it was very rich. A little more crust would nicely balance the richness. I would love to try other flavors next time.

The food and drinks definitely lived up to the hype: * Coffee: Solid - I had a regular latte (breve) with an extra shot. * Caprese Croissant: Absolutely delicious. You can tell they use high-quality, fresh ingredients. * Matcha Croissant: The matcha itself was overly sweet which is part of the outer coat of the croissant. The inside was filled with cream and jam that balanced perfectly--you could actually taste the fruit and cream without it being overly sweet. A quick note on sweetness: I don't typically eat a lot of sweets. If you have a major sweet tooth, you'll definitely enjoy these.

I was even more drawn in by the fact that they specialize in Matcha drinks. I think we ordered about 1/3 of the desserts in the display case. One of my sisters is gluten-free, so she got a gluten-free cinnamon roll from a bakery they they partner with to supply their gluten-free desserts. I forgot to take a photo of the name cards, so I don't remember exactly what everything was called. We tried the raspberry Matcha croissant, the cozy croissant, a honey croissant cookie (basically a cookie made of croissant dough), a cinnamon roll, focaccia, a strawberry mascarpone croissant, a Caprese danish type pastry, a garlic cream cheese danish type pastry, a banana bread iced chai latte, and a strawberry Matcha latte. The pastries were all 10/5 stars-- truly. The Caprese one was topped with the best pesto Ive ever had. The garlic cream cheese one could be eaten for breakfast every day. The loxxy croissant was stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese and was so tasty that my sister who doesn't eat seafood, liked it and said she could eat a whole one herself. Everything bagel seasoning created a crunch on top that was just perfect. The strawberry mascarpone was a personal favorite for me. It just was so perfectly executed and the flavors we're all on point. It had strawberry cheesecake vibes, but the filling was lighter since it was mascarpone. The raspberry Matcha croissant was actually one of my least favorite items, though I did still really like it. It seemed like it was filled with both blackberries and raspberries, but I didn't mind. It was just significantly sweeter than the other desserts and maybe a bit much for me. However, I finished it the next day and really enjoyed every last piece of sugar. I'm thinking maybe in contrast to the other items, I just wasn't liking this one as much, but when it was standing on its own, it was great! The cinnamon roll was everything a cinnamon roll should be! It was even better because they warmed it up for us. The honey croissant cookie was simple and satisfying. I would eat those anytime. Sometimes it's nice to just enjoy a more simple dessert. The focaccia was some of the best any of us had ever had. I tried my sister's chai and thought it was really good, albeit too sweet for me to have ordered myself . Sadly my Matcha was too sweet as well, so I'm not sure I would order another. I was disappointed about that part since it's something the bakery is known for. The outside and inside of the bakery are both really cute! Everything is decorated nicely. They sell a little bit of boutique style clothing and some branded goods near the front. The staff taking our order were honestly not the friendliest, but I will chock that up to us being annoying, taking too long to decide which 10 items we wanted. We let everyone who came in after us go before us, but I'm sure we were still annoying. The staff who took over later in our visit when we went back up to order even more drinks and pastries were very friendly! Overall, a fantastic visit. I am sad to not live closer, but actually that's probably a good thing for my wallet and pant size. If you are in Dayton and considering a visit to Val's bakery, do it. Truly, no way you will regret it!

So we just walked in, and the host was kind enough to let us sit at the little bar area near the window. I like their ordering system. You have many options --- go up to the cash register and order there, order from the server who comes by your table (or in our case, bar), or use your phone by scanning the QR code. And if you use your phone, each person in your party can do it themselves on their own phone. Regardless, it all gets added to the same order for the same table. Pretty slick. At the end, when it comes time to pay, the app lets you split the check however you want, and you can even see the name of the person that ordered each item. The food was incredible. It's not cheap, and the portions are a little smaller than some might expect at an Italian restaurant. But for us, it was filling enough. I personally had the raviolo, which was delicious. Little did I know that in Italian, "raviolo" is singular while "ravioli" is plural. So I got one giant raviolo on my plate (see picture). I didn't care much for the runny egg yolk on top, but it was as advertised on the menu. All the other food orders were amazing, especially the desserts. I'd definitely come back once my food budget resets.

I don't really care for sweets (I even recycle Halloween candy from year to year!), but I dream of Ele's white cake with butter cream frosting. Last week I threw a party - I ordered the cake online on Wednesday for a Saturday pickup. The website is really easy to navigate and allows you to customize your cake. As this was a landmark birthday party, we wanted all black and gray frosting - weird, I know, but it came out perfectly (and was actually very pretty). I arrived on Saturday an hour before I had stated in my order, the cake was ready, and since you can pay online too, I was in and out in 90 seconds. Now, at the end of a grown-up birthday party, you're usually putting the extra cake back in the box and counting the days until the frosting is hard enough to throw the leftovers away and you don't have to feel like you're wasting food. Or is that just me? Regardless, at the end of this party, there wasn't a crumb left (anticipating this, I had already put a generous sized slice in tupperware during the Passing of the Cake Plates cake-cutting ritual - heheheh). I once drove through a massive snowstorm to get one of their cakes (for a party being thrown for me, in fact), because, although the roads were treacherous, they were open for business, my friends are apparently timid drivers, and the cake really is THAT good.
