I was highly disappointed by the delivery. I bought it over yelp, and because I was super hungry I ordered the food at 5 pm which was supposed to be delivered at 8.30 pm. I waited till 8.45 and there was no sign of food anywhere. I called them up and they told the delivery person was on the way. I received my food at 9pm. At this point I am starving already and I open up the brown bag only to realize that they hadn't put in the spoon/fork for me to eat with. Next I open my shahi paneer, aluminum box only to find that it wasn't what I had ordered. I received something which looked like mixed vegetables with huge chunks of cauliflower and carrots (I am indian and I know how shahi paneer is supposed to look like). Needless to say I took a few bites and had to throw the food away. DO NOT ORDER from this place. read more

Speaking to the Mehak owners about a deficiency in their costumer service was my worst experience. Since COVID-19 restrictions, whenever I am out of town during meal times, I order my lunch or dinner in advance, pick up food and eat it in my car. Yesterday I was in Berkeley, placed phone order to pick up Lamb Biryani. I picked up order and went to my car to eat. To my surprise, there were no utensils or napkins in the bag. Came back and asked the owner that he forgot to put utensils and napkins with my food. He became very angry, abruptly and rudely he replies with no remorse that I have to ask for the utensils or napkins at the time of pick up. I was stunned by his response. He further adds, do you need napkin or utensils? I replied, give me what ever you have so that I can eat. He hands me over one fork and one small piece of napkin with his bare hands. OMG, is he offering best customer service experience or is he complying with COVID-19 protocols? Absolutely not. Good food, naan and rice complementary. Dishes limited but good.

The place looks a little shabby and is in a marginal neighborhood next to a liquor store. But, this is some really good indian food. We started with an appetizer platter with a samosa, some pakoras, and several pieces of chicken tikka, all quite good and fresh. For dinner, we shared aloo gobi, chicken tikka masala, and Baingan Bartha. My favorite was the tikka, big pieces of chicken in a thick spicy sauce with great flavor. Baingan Bartha was also really good with lots of spice and flavor. Aloo gobi was a little too spicy for me but looked fresh, my wife said it was delicious. The place is small, and they appeared to be doing a brisk to go business. We will be back when in town again. read more

Very bad service. We decided to give them another chance. We ordered for delivery. Three times before - different problems. No more! Tonight. We didn't get rice with our meals. We called after delivery girl left. The guy said "it will be another 15 minutes". I said "this food will be cold by then". The man repeated "15 minutes" and then HUNG UP on me. Very unprofessional, rude. No apology. It's been 20 minutes! Try another place for delivery!!! There are others. We are moving on! This place should not do delivery if they can't "deliver"!! read more

The food is tasty and overall great value for the price. Most of their vegetarian dishes are excellent and they can often make some dishes that aren't on the menu (such as Saag Daal, Spinach with lentils) and do make food spicy if you ask for it. to the owner: Just one negative that the rice they use is not the best (compared to real basmati rice that would be long-grain and more fluffy) and they give you one large rice container if you order 1 dish...and if you order 2 dishes they still give you 1 large container (and when you ask if they forgot the other rice, the say for 2 entree order they give you 1 large rice. i've ordered for 1 dish and 2 dishes, and they give you the same amount for both orders). Don't be cheap and use better rice. read more

This is my first review. I love Lamb Korma and order it at every indian restaurant with it on the menu. So far I like Mehak's the most. I'm picky about my Korma. I don't want one that is too sour (too much yogurt), or too tomato-y. This one is creamy from cashew. It has a great flavor. For the first time, I also tried the Aloo Gobi (not sure of name) --- cauliflower and potatoes in spices . Wow, I love the flavor of the cauliflower. I'm not a big cauliflower fan but ordered it because it is such a healthy vegetable. And couldn't get enough of it! My 9-year-old daughter loved it too. It had this special flavor, very fragrant, which the potatoes didn't have. I wish I knew what it was. Maybe it was roasted? It was so good! I ordered my lamb korma mild because of my daughter and it is really mild, so if you want spicy, get medium or spicy. Service is great, and fast. I don't pay much attention to decor so that isn't an issue for me. The portions were good, we have enough for another meal and half. It is also quiet enough to have a conversation, unlike Breads of India. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. Dal is kidney beans, chicken pakora a frozen entree from stouffers maybe, chicken tikka a chicken Breast that was so dry and nasty I imagine it was in multiple buffets, the raita smelled and looked rotten, samosas were also something frozen and when delivered were not even adequately microwaved. This place is just awful. I regret ordering delivery a place I've never been lesson learned - never again. Mehak is terrible. Ugh. I feel icky. read more

First time here and the food was great. From the bread to the entree, everything was delicious. I definitely recommend this place.

I got 2 chicken dishes, do piazzo and with mushrooms. I was happy that it was very spicy hot like I asked, but there were very few mushrooms. I found 1 piece of a bell pepper in the other dish. Luckily I was getting take out and could go home and add sliced peppers and onion/veggies to the 2 dishes. The prices are a little higher than other places (9.99 for chicken dishes,) so I would have appreciated a little more stuff in the sauce. I'll get delivery from them for sure. read more

This is a great Indian Restaurant. Kind of a hidden jewel and a little hard to find, but the food is great, really good, generous portions and very reasonable. Service is wonderful. I don't know why more people don't support this restaurant. It's so much better than some of the fancier Indian restaurants. It's quite casual, but really good food. In an area of Berkeley otherwise bereft of Indian cuisine, the intersection of Dwight and Sacramento is the exception: directly across the street from the previously reviewed Breads of India (BoI) lies Mehak Indian Cuisine (MIC). Inhabiting a small, old space with a plethora of red accents, Mehak has an ambiance that is less than impressive. Tacky paper placemats abound, as does tacky paper "art": posters mounted with scotch tape, and framed behind scratched plastic. The wall paintings are of very low caliber (the tigers are barely recognizable as such), and ye auld ornate wooden screen makes yet another appearance (who is the supplier). The agèd menu, replete with spelling errors, had an uncompelling statement of North-Indian supremacy, suggesting that the owners are (unsuccessfully) competing with BoI. The food, while decent, suggested the same. The punjabi chicken curry ($10) was heavy on the cilantro, but was well cooked and nicely spiced. The aloo gobi ($9) was more impressive than usual, with only slightly undercooked potatoes, good cauliflower, and a high level of heat, as requested. The mango lassi ($2.5) was nice and tart, and, interestingly, the rice was yellow (though it had no additional flavor). The naan selections were mediocre: the regular naan ($2) was greasy and undercooked, and the kashmiri naan ($2.5) had a fake cherry flavor, though thankfully it wasn't as offensive as the version from India Flavors Express. Unremarkable, overall, warranting three samosas, two rupees, and thus a samosa-to-rupee ratio of 1.5. Some nice flavors, but nothing outstanding, especially in light of Mehak's proximity to BoI, which, incidentally, sustained $100,000 worth of fire damage in March, 2012. Having had such a fantastic meal at Mehak's recently conflagrated competitor, we can't help but wonder whence the lighting match came... read more

The food is pretty good, a little salty sometimes, but their delivery leaves something to be desired. They missed my house, were reluctant to come up my stairs and expected me to come to their car. When they did make it up the stairs, they made no eye contact and made me bend down to meet them at the step they decided to stop at. I'm almost regretting adding a tip now. Even mediocre customer service doesn't take much effort. Maybe it's a cultural thing. I don't know but it surprised me how negative an experience I had with their driver. read more

This is my favorite place to get Indian. The food is to die for. Everything they make is thick and creamy. It's a place to dine in or take out. I've done both and enjoyed both. If you take out you get huge portions. If you dine in you get huge portions and those crispy chips to dip in those tasty sauces. The prices are below average and they deliver. If you're new to Indian don't be, just tell them mild and enjoy a whole new world of ethnic cuisine. I love the chicken tikka masala and the garlic naan. If you live in Berkeley your Indian take out should come from here. We've been here a couple times. Honestly, for the price this is a real gem. Serving size is generous and the chef knows how to blend spices for nuanced flavors. I don't care whether you choose a basic like chicken tikka masala, one of the biryanis, maybe a vindaloo or paneer. It's all good. Service is attentive and friendly. Pretty fast and efficient delivery, but nothing crazy to write home about. The "spicy" gives the food a bit of a kick, so if you're wanting actual spicy, ask them to make it very hot. Thought the chicken tikki masala had more sauce than chicken. read more

DANGER!!! I ordered Shrimp Tikka Masala and Mali Kofta. The shrimp was undercooked and mushy and while I only ate 2 shrimp that was all it took to make me very sick within an hour. I have been suffering from painful food poisoning for a full 20 hours after eating this meal. In addition my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Masala and it too was rubbery. This is a MUST. Once you try their food your HOOKED!!! The Lamb Korma with regular nan is very MMMMMMMMMmmm. Yummy!!!! A must try! And they bake their breads fresh. They are very nice and deliver and the food is just so good. When I use to slave drive for the city of berkeley job. I use to go there and eat thier Buffet at lunch. The price was reasonable and the Food was Sooooo good. For chicken lovers. The chicken korma is good also. I love this place I've eaten many of restaurants and none Compare or come close to the TASTE of this one. I wish I can eat their food every night it's so good. I ordered 4 dishes 2 appetizer-and 2 entrees chicken pakora and chilli chicken for my appetizer and for my entree I ordered Punjabi chicken chicken curry and shrimp curry and they gave me boiled lamb curry instead of chicken and the shrimp was not cleaned well. It is not worth it. read more

It is surprising to read some of the negative reviews and wonder if we are talking about the same restaurant. I have been going to Mehak for over twenty years and have always found the food well prepared; the curries are rich and complex, the service friendly. I have always picked up my food or ate at the restaurant with family and not called for delivery. We have ordered a range of dishes and found them to be consistently good. I am English and grew up going to Indian restaurants so know good from less good and in my experience Mehak stands the test of time which is why I see so many people going back and why they are still in business. read more
