We just had an employee luncheon for a staff member who is returning to her home in India. We ordered a number of dishes from Mehak (which by the way we patronize as individuals all the time and have never been disappointed!) along with appetizers. we had the order delivered and the meal was beyond everything we expected. Our guest of honor said it was excellent Indian food and she was very pleased. She is quite a cook so we KNOW that is high praise. The to-go packaging is very careful. Containers are additionally wrapped to prevent leakage. All is labeled and packed very carefully. we like to eat there in person and find the staff very courteous, helpful and attentive. We are and always will be repeat customers. The Punjabi Chicken and Lamb Biryani are excellent. The cucumber salad also. read more

Everything has varying degress of too much salt. The Paneer dish we had was a little oversalted, and the Pakoras were inedibly salted. If I were to order from here, again, I would ask them to use a little salt, only. Girl at the register reminds of a dog you want to be careful of provoking--just RUDE, without any provocation. I greeted her, and she gave me a flat, empty stare. I asked her for an extra Tamarind sauce for the little-did-I-know-then unsalvageable Pakoras, and she turned to the man (owner?) and asked him for the sauce in a tone that was on par with "can you believe this bi**h is asking for an extra sauce?" I don't know Hindi, but, trust me, she wasn't telling him that I smelled like rose petals. She handed me the charge slip to sign, but no pen. She then gave me a pen, after I asked, sighing and handing it over as if to say, "you have got to stop being so demanding," and the pen didn't work. Uh-oh, she looked around for a bit for a new pen and then nothing. Finally, I bit off the tip of my finger and signed in blood. The onion nan was lovely. read more

This is my favorite place for Indian in Berkeley that I've tried. I got a paneer(can't remember which), dal soup(I believe it is called), and a side of raita for my rice. Everything was exceptionally flavorful and delicious. I've noticed some others here have commented on lack of flavor but I can only review based upon the items I tried which were truly the antithesis of lacking. The paneer I got was cooked in a cheesy curry with cashews. Very rich in flavor and a huge portion size. The dal soup had a very earthy vibe and taste which I loved. It was a lentil soup and reminded me of many delicious vegan soups I've consumed in the past(not sure if dal is vegan though, you'd have to ask about that). The raita was very much reminiscent of a Greek yogurt sauce. I poured it on my rice. I also got a chai tea. They gave me a huge amount of chai tea for the cheap price in comparison to other Indian places. They also iced it for me and sent it to me that way in my to go order as per request. Another thing I have never seen an Indian restaurant do. It went great with the spicy Indian flavors in the food. What I love on top of all of this is that I paid only 19.00 to have all of this delivered to me and I got 3 meals out of it. Check out grubhub app to see if you are in delivery range of their establishment. Anyways, their food is to die for so even if your first experience wasn't what you'd hoped, I still recommend returning and trying a few other items! read more

mehak is awesome. i just ordered from them and felt they needed a review. i live about six blocks away but i ALWAYS use their free delivery option. their food is always tasty and filling. i have not been disappointed by their food yet. we always order too much and that's never a problem because i loooove indian leftovers. their prices are pretty decent. i haven't actually ever eaten IN the restaurant but i hear they have a killer $6.99 lunch buffet. if i ever got out of bed before 1:30 i'd try it out. they have some good coupons in their take out menu, like buy two get one free. they are pretty tight on their coupon usage though. once my bf ordered food and i picked it up on my way home and said i had the coupon at home and tried to swing the discount anyway. pizza places always do that! but he wasn't having any of it. boo. it's okay because i'm using the coupon tonight. maybe they'll give me another menu!! read more

I love this place so much - a total hidden East Bay gem. The value is amazing - I honestly feel a little guilty when the check arrives because I feel like I should have to pay more for that much delicious food. So far I've tried lamb vindaloo, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, aloo saag, chicken malai, veggie kofta, and lots of naans and there was not a single mediocre dish in the bunch. Rice is unlimited and included. The service is very friendly and attentive. Honestly, I was a little put off by the exterior because it seemed a bit run down, oldish sign, oldish building, and the interior decor is very simple and understated but clean; however, don't let that deter you. While it may not be the restaurant you try to impress someone with on a first date, it is the restaurant you'll eat out at more than once a week after you're married or while you're single! They do great delivery too! Given that dishes are all under $10, I can afford to eat there as much as I do! The food always tastes fresh and their flavors of the dishes are very distinct, complex and nuanced. This place is the bomb. Their CTM is great and their saag paneer was perfectly creamy/spicy, too. But, most importantly: BEST. SAMOSAS. EVER. Oh my god, I have dreams about these samosas. I've been a customer for years and I've never had a complaint. Delivery is always speedy and the food arrives very hot. Take out is always very quick (and they always give me a glass of water while I wait, which is gracious). I don't eat in very often, but when I do the service is always excellent. My favorites are the bangan bharta, the saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, and naan -- all are excellent. Medium spicy has a good kick to it, so if you are on the fence, go with mild! The portions are very generous for the price. My beau and I can get two meals out of two entrees, two naans, and two orders rice (rice is included at no extra charge in the take-out, which is normally how we do). Highly recommend. read more

The place isn't the most attractive looking inside or out, maybe that's why it was completely empty inside. The white cloths on the table had stains. The food was decent . The chicken in the tikki masala was a little hard , but it tasted ok . The cheese naan was also just ok , I wouldn't recommend it . The best for me was the lamb vindaloo, the lamb was so tender , and perfectly spiced . If I had to pay full price for the food , I would not come back . It's been years since our last visit. Glad we came back. We ordered in advance, pick up to go. It was already packed to go. The man who answered the phone was very efficient. Took the order, repeated it, gave me the time it would be ready 30 minutes. What we ordered: - 1 each CTM, Lamb coconut curry and Aloo Gobi - 2 containers packed with rice - 1 order of each, plain and garlic naan - 2 orders samosa with dipping sauces - 1 order veg pakora with dipping sauces Grand total $48 for all that food! Each container was packed full to capacity, no skimping and very well sealed so no spillage. Even 1/2 hour when we got home unpacked food, the tin foil containers were very hot to the touch. Their dining room is clean, tidy, spacious. They remodeled and it is inviting. The gentleman who greeted us, I think is who took the order and he was perfectly polite. HORRIBLE!! This place is an absolute disgrace, and we never even got to try our food. We ordered delivery at 7 pm on a Friday night. We understand that this is a busy time for restaurants, so we waited patiently. When we still hadn't gotten our order after more than 90 minutes, we called for the first time. They told us our delivery would arrive in 20-30 more minutes. 40 minutes later (2 hours and 10 minutes after we ordered!), the food still hadn't arrived. We called again, and were again told that our order would arrive within 20 minutes. That would have been 2.5 hours after we ordered, and they never once offered to give us the meal (or even just part of it) for free. At this point, we told them to just cancel the order, since we would not be paying for food 2.5 hours after ordering. I don't think I have ever encountered customer service quite THIS bad. If you are thinking about ordering here, do yourself a favor and don't. read more

Been eating Mehak's food for a decade now. My Malaysian kids swear by the Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, and samosa.

I've looked at this place a bazillion times and never had a good reason to go in. Groupon convinced me, and I'm really glad. Had the fried paneer appetizer which was delicious. Paneer chunks with stuff around them dipped in batter and deep fried and sprinkled with some green flavorful powder... it was delicious by itself and even better dipped into the different chutneys and sauces that came with the other dishes. The lamb saag was superb as was the malia kofta - I know I spelled that wrong -- the vege balls in tikka sauce... the naan bread basket was actually too much for two people, so we had plenty to take home. It was all chewy and delicious though I wouldn't get the one with cherries again... something about it irked me and I'm not sure what so I'll trust my intuition. The servings were ample, the food was reasonably priced and with the Groupon unbelievably cheap. The gentleman who appeared to be hosting was gentile, gracious and very professional and our waitress was really pleasant. The mood in the restaurant was happy, and aside from the draft from the door opening, it felt good to be there. The decor was drab and beat-up looking but it's a neighborhood restaurant not the Four Seasons, and there is a charm to it. There is a painting that is unintentionally racy, and my friend and I had a good chuckle. I couldn't help but compliment the host on how wonderful everything was, and he came back shortly after with a gift certificate for our next visit which was exceptionally nice. I would have gone back without the added incentive, but I think he was genuinely being kind. A great evening with great food and wonderful hosts. If you are worrying about the bad reviews - don't. Most of them seem to be about the delivery service. I saw the delivery guy patiently waiting to pick up some orders to deliver, and it looked to me like he had to wait until there were several orders ready before he could leave, and with a complex menu I would think that people ordering delivery would give some latitude on the delivery times. The garlic naan is always amazing. The reason for one less star is that they should include a but more meat or dumplings with the meal. I almost didn't go here because it looks kind of run down and not so inviting from the outside, especially if you look at Breads of India across the street. However, the food at Mehak is good and cheaper. Plus, the people who work there were SO nice to us when we came for dinner. In fact, they completely doted on me as a new customer, and then when they found out I was new to the neighborhood, gave me a discount on my meal and some great tips on things in the neighborhood. It's a shame, as I think people often overlook this place because their ambiance is just not as nice as Breads of India. So, if you are looking for good Indian food in this neighborhood, and find BOI isn't your thang, try going across the street. The first time I ordered from them, delivery took much longer than they told me it would, but the food was good so I let it slide. Tonight I decided to give them another shot. After I had been waiting for an hour and a half, I called to ask if my food was on its way. They asked for my address and told me the driver was on the way and it should arrive any minute. When two hours had passed since I placed my order, I called back. I was put on hold for several minutes before being told that they had "misplaced my order" and that they couldn't cancel it since I ordered online. The lamb korma dish here is amazing. The chicken naan and cheese naan are also really good. Service was attentive and nice. The only thing that is a bit distracting is the lighting - every few minutes the overhead lights will dim for just a moment, but it seems like the power is going out or something.
