I was told by another doc that I had severe cataract's and needed both of them removed the next month. When I explained that I had no symptoms, he smiled rather patronizing and again insisted I needed the surgery. In the meantime I was taking my patient to see Dr Raphtis. My patient had a severe eye inflammation and after watching how well he cared for him I made an appointment for myself. As I had suspected, I do not need cataract surgery, furthermore Dr Raphtis explained that I would tell him when it was time for surgery because I would have symptoms! I was very impressed with his honesty and explanations and his willingness to listen and answer my questions. I am thankful he was my patients doctor, I am confidant that I and my patient are in good hands!

On April 1, 2025, I was told my cataracts were "ripe" enough to do surgery. I was put on the waiting list. 3 months later, I had my first surgery. Before that I met with the surgeon and the "insurance expert", Fran. During a one-on-one meeting with this so-called expert, I made it quite clear I did not want my eye drops prescription called in to Walgreens. She assured me she would call it in to Henry Ford Pharmacy, my preferred pharmacy. She called it in to Walgreens! After 4 phone calls, I straightened that mess out. After the above, I spoke to the office manager, Kathy, about Fran's actions. She assured me that Fran would be "written up". While on the phone with Kathy, I inquired why I had to pay the $35 refraction fee before they would do my surgery. Her response, "that's our procedure". BTW, that refraction didn't occur until August 21, 7 weeks later. But, of course they processed my payment immediately. After the 2nd eye operation, I did a follow-up appointment to see how the procedure went. I had some swelling, so Dr. Vanderhoff suggested I return in 2 weeks for another evaluation. When I got to the front desk, I was told there was nothing in 2 weeks, so they set it at 3 weeks. A week later, they called me and said they had to push my appointment out another week, or a month after my surgery. I ordered my glasses through Costco and finally picked the up today. My entire summer was blind-sighted (forgive the pun). Why can't a cataract patient be given a schedule of appointments so that the final outcome can happen in a reasonable timeline? There seems to be a disconnect between the professional staff and the people at the front desk. Why does a patient who knowingly has numerous appointments have to use the card reader to check-in every time. "The system" has all your insurance information and your driver's license stored. I will be seeking additional vision care at a different facility.

Finally called Billing (the only dept that answers their phone) and they transferred me to C. who is now on vacation for 2 weeks and her voicemail says she won't listen to any messages until then. No way to talk to *anyone* in the office! Finally, I called the doctor on his personal cell phone (!) and he says he'll take care of it personally. If C. would have looked at the fax machine after she "faxed" it she would have seen the message on the fax machine that had not gone thru!

My eyes started bothering me, i figured i needed some drops (since they felt dry) and figured it was from smudges of mascara i got on my contacts! As i started to drive, it became almost unbearable. I was driving and realized that i shouldn't be. I couldn't keep my eyes open and the sunny bright day was painful. Instead of driving to the hall for the funeral, i called my mom and begged her to grab me eye drops and went to her house. The drops killed. Nothing was making it better. I couldn't close or open my eyes, the pain was excruciating. That is when i decided i needed to see someone and ASAP (as it was nearing end of work day about 2:30pm). Since i don't live in town the first place i called was my Mothers ophthalmologist who unfortunately turned me away (they don't see new patients for emergency's) and told me to head to the ER or urgent care. I knew i needed a specialist and did not have hours to spare! So i came across affiliated eye surgeons and Kristy answered. She asked for my insurance and told me i needed a global referral from my doctor and gave me all the information to give my PCP. She said we will get you in, don't worry. She was amazing and helped me sort everything out! Now i get there and everyone of the staff is extremely nice. I did not wait long before they took me to the exam room where a super sweet lady (sorry i don't recall her name but she was great) did a preliminary exam. When she completed, she took me over to another room. There walks in the sweetest Doctor! Dr. Lindsay Rubin asked me if i was okay and did not scold me about anything but actually sympathized with my pain. She and her assistant Ashley were wonderful. She took a look in my eyes and there it was... a dreaded corneal ulcer in both eyes!!! She told me how important it was to catch early and put me on antibiotics ASAP (1 drop per eye every two hours). She told me to notify her ASAP if it doesn't get better. She told me she would call me Saturday morning to confirm that it was healing. She even suggested to give my info to an ophthalmologist in Ann Arbor to follow up. Since we need to do many visits in a short period of time to stop it from doing long term damage. I refused the polite transfer. She was incredible and caring and her bedside manner can't be beat! Plus she knew what was going on and i wanted to be in the best hands, so i will be driving from Ann Arbor to see her for my follow up bright and early Monday morning. They all did such a wonderful job and i am so thankful to them as i could have lost sight in both eyes!! I will never go anywhere else! I will be going to the practice from now on for everything! Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart! I actually felt well enough today to look at my phone and write this book on how amazing you all are! It's all thanks to you!!!
