As someone born and raised in Louisiana, soul food isn't just food to me--it's home, it's family, it's love on a plate. I've been living in Arizona for almost four years now, and I haven't had real soul food in all that time... until tonight. Mel N Libby's showed up at my apartment complex, and I knew I had to try it--but I'll admit, I was nervous. If you're Southern, you know what I mean. I asked where she was from, because a real Southern cook just knows. When she said the Carolinas, I felt that nervousness melt away. I ordered the Mel Special, and let me tell you--this was a feast. Ribs, tenders, baked mac and cheese, collard greens, fried shrimp, cornbread, and banana pudding. The portions were generous, the food was hot, and every bite tasted like it was made with intention and love. My first bite honestly brought me to tears. It reminded me so much of my mom's cooking--comforting, rich, soulful. It healed a part of my homesick heart that I didn't even realize was still aching. Mel N Libby's isn't just serving food--they're serving memories, comfort, and a true taste of the South. The first words out of my mouth after taking a bite of my wife's fried fish: "Now my breff stank!" My wife's initial assessment: fishy taste with a lack of seasoning. No salt, no pepper, tasted like flour on fish... mostly fish. You expect a certain quality when you attend a Food Truck Friday event. Was this the best they could do for $12? No Soul in this Food. So I ordered the Fried Shrimp with Macaroni and Potato Salad. The Shrimp was cooked okay however it wasn't seasoned at all it's the same for the Macaroni. For the price I'm disappointed with the flavor. This isn't soul food it's just food. read more

The food is definitely homemade with love and deliciousness. Ingredients used take me back to my grandmas home-cooking. It seems the food has even improved since the last time we came. Amazing food, got the Mel's special and it was very good. Ribs were some of the best I've had ever, the bones were even soft and I could smash them with my fingers. The meat was perfectly tender and juicy with a good mix of seasoning and sauce. Fall off the bone doesn't begin to describe, I glanced at them across the table and the bone slid out of the meat. Mac and cheese with that lovely baked crust on top. Chicken breaded to perfection. Potato salad like grandma makes. Peach cobbler to die for. Mel n Libby's has some great soul food, which we had at a Food Truck Friday event. We wanted to try everything, but had the following...bbq ribs (hands down the most tender fall off the bone ribs we ever had)...fried chicken wings (their seasoning is amazing. Would love to see other options besides the wing because it was so good)....mac & cheese (pretty good), potato salad (pretty good), cornbread was great & we tried the banana pudding & peach cobbler for dessert (both very good). Wow, where do I start! I had the Mel Special which comes with Ribs, chicken tenders, corn bread and choice of 2 sides (I picked the potato salad and collard greens). The ribs are juicy and cooked perfectly, and the sauce is just right. The potato salad and corn bread are wonderful. Now here's the crazy part, the chicken tenders are so fresh and good, I wasn't expecting that. And last, you have to try the COLLARD GREENS! I've lived on all over the US and have had collard greens many times and Mel & Libbys are the best! read more

I found them by requesting a quote through Yelp and Jewe'l got back to me in about one minute and talked me through the menu and quantities. Within the hour I was invoiced and done with the planning! The food was delicious and plentiful. The fried chicken wings were crispy and perfectly spiced, the ribs were amazing and the banana pudding should not be missed. Absolutely delicious. I had Mel & Libby's cater dinner for a focus group I held in Brooklyn. Jewel was professional and arrived on time, actually early. She beat me to the venue lol. Everyone kept asking where I ordered the food from. The seasoning was perfect. I'm from the south and I know cornbread... that was some of the best cornbread I've had in New York. We used Mel & Libby's for a private backyard party. We had about 100 people in attendance and Mel & Libby's could have handled more than that easily and efficiently. We used their suggestion for food based on the type of party we had and the number of people there. 100% of our guests loved the food, and,in fact, raved about it. The truck was clean, and the servers were friendly and warm. As a matter of fact, our guests went out of their way to tell us how much they appreciated the amiable servers. Tonight was my 1st experience with their food truck. Everything was absolutely delicious. My daughter had the fish (Whiting) meal with mac & cheese, my son had the shrimp meal with potato salad and I had the bbq rib meal with mac & cheese and potato salad. Greens were on the menu as a side bit they had run out. Both Miss Libby & Miss Mel came over to see how we enjoyed the food. Both were very humble and appreciative of any comments or critiques. Delicious Food & Excellent Service! Mel & Libby's catered our Women's Day Program at church last fall for 200 people. We had a traditional Southern cuisine meal of barbecue chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese. The dais had extras including fried chicken, skillet corn bread, potato salad, banana pudding surprise cake! Chef Jewel even made special vegan dishes with a southern flair for our Pastor! Walking down a Brooklyn Street. Seeing some Great BBQ happening, I stop and comment "Damm those look good" and the awesome Chef (Ms Hardy) says "you want one?" Jules is AMAZING! She was incredibly accommodating in a last minute request to help me cater an event in two days when I was all the way across the country. She was incredibly professional and give me guidance on the best choices for my party size and the type of event we were having and her suggestions were spot on.
