I spent my time on Yelp one night to find a local tailor, as other brides had recommended to me. I came across Melfy, who had amazing reviews, plus, conveniently located in Queens! Melfy is a humble lady who is beyond talented, has an eye for attention to details, thoughtful, and very honest in her recommendations. I had a mermaid gown that needed to be hemmed (I'm only 5' 1''), bust and hips taken in, and added cups to go bra-less. She even sewed in the cups with blue thread for my "something blue." Melfy is very sweet. When I first arrive to her home, she had a full body length mirror up and a red carpet rolled out in front of it. She treats you like royalty, and makes you feel like a queen. Throughout the whole process, we chatted, and I got to learn a little bit more about her and her humble beginnings. Melfy is nothing short of amazing! I had my Ramona Keveza sample sale dress that was at least 3 sizes too big fit like a glove after going to her. I fit about a wedding dress 2 or 4 and it was originally a 10. She also did the bustle and added cups. She has a lot of experience in designer wedding gown alterations. She has worked for Pronovias in the past. Melfy pays attention to detail and has a lot of knowledge. She's always on time and on target. She only needs 2 fittings but if more are necessary she will accommodate. When everything fits, you come back another time for pickup. My dress and veil were ready to go upon pickup; steamed and clean. She also gives you very helpful tips and suggestions for undergarments, to veils to how to sit and walk. I brought her a dress that I was worried couldn't be tailored - it's made of a very fine lace with lots of buttons and embellishments. I couldn't zip up the back. I had about 4 fittings because I forgot to bring my heels with me and I did a bustle on my mermaid gown. You couldn't even tell where the alterations were made and you won't notice the clear buttons for the bustle on the day of (which I was initially worried about). My mermaid gown had many many layers and she hemmed it perfectly. She sewed foam cups in my dress and I didn't have to wear the undergarment. Also, she was very reasonably priced!!!!!!! Words cannot describe how wonderful and talented Melfy is. I had purchased my wedding gown off the rack and it required a substantial amount of alterations. Melfy knew exactly what needed to be done to the dress, and was upfront about which alterations she could and could not perform. The dress had a lettuce hem that, although she knew how to move it in order to shorten the dress, she did not have the equipment to do so. However, she was able to take in the chest (which required moving intricate beading and boning), add a bustle, and even correct some mistakes that the other seamstress had made when shortening the dress. I first worked with Melfy when she was my neighbor in Jackson Heights, Queens, in 2019. She did wonderful work on a relatively simple alteration of a gown that I wore to a friend's wedding in Tuscany. Based on that experience, I contacted her when I was getting married this year to see if she could put her years of bridal alterations to work on my Made With Love lace dress. As expected, she did a fantastic job rooted in her true devotion to her customers and her work. I did a total of four fittings with her, as I was 16 weeks pregnant at my wedding and my body was starting to change a bit as we did final fittings, but Melfy took it all in stride and didn't charge me more despite this taking more of her time. I wish I could give Melfy more than five stars! Can't recommend her highly enough. She worked at Pronovias alterations for 7 years and has been altering wedding dresses for decades now! Not only did she clearly know her stuff, but she took personal care to give important tips and advice on how to get the dress exactly how I wanted. She was also MUCH more affordable than anywhere else I looked, and much higher quality work. She was honest about what she could get done in what amount of time, and I know for a fact that she won't take work she can't complete in the time. (She has a friend she refers to, who she says is amazing as well.) My dress (Pronovias' Taciana) was the right size for me, but had layers upon layers of very expensive and difficult-to-work-with tulle that had to be hemmed, as well a very heavy, complicated bustle, and I had a one-month timeline. I took it to two places in Manhattan and both seemed overwhelmed by the work it would take and quoted me very high prices, saying, "We will try to make a bustle but can't promise anything." I was not confident they knew what they were doing with the tulle and how to treat the different layers, to the point that when I left I was feeling a little despairing about getting things done in time at all. I brought it to Melfy and she immediately problem-solved everything: identifying a need to reinforce the back with hook and eye closures, showing me how she would cut in certain places to shorten the hemline more easily without losing the dress' shape, suggesting ways to shorten underneath so I could walk and dance easily, and suggesting a French bustle to preserve the beautiful waistline embroidery on the dress. She was willing to work with my one-month timeline, AND -- she was HALF the cost of the minimum price the others quotes me! (Probably helps not to have the Manhattan rent overhead!) She was very straightforward and efficient, but so so kind! It was clear right away that she understood more about the dress and how exactly it ought to be altered than either of the other places I went to. We finished it within two fittings and the dress looked absolutely perfect and was in pristine condition. On the third visit she showed me how to sit in it and even coached me on how to pose for pictures! ("You are princess and you must carry yourself like one!" she told me very firmly.) 5+ stars for Melfi's bridal alterations! Melfi is the real deal when it comes to absolutely top quality work. I reached out to her to see if she could take the work in the time frame I had. She asked about the date by when I needed my dress complete, had me try on the dress and discuss what I wanted to have done to the dress, and made suggestions on what else should be done - things that were necessary but I would not have known to ask for. I brought my mom to that first visit - my mom worked in this industry when we first moved to the states - and she impressed my mom. Hired! We agreed on the timeline and cost. Each time I was there we scheduled the next fitting appointment. Melfi was always ready with each set of alterations at the next appointment. During each visit she rolls out the red carpet, literally and figuratively to make sure you feel like a princess and there is no damage to the dress. Her work is high quality. She can explain in lay and terms what an issue with the dress may be, how she proposes to fix it and get your buy in before proceeding. Besides shortening the length of the dress (and the million skirts underneath) she had to do substantial work on the bust which was really screwed up by the company which made the dress. This took the most detailed work and the most skill. She rocked it. When I mentioned that I was having trouble finding a flat veil that wouldn't look bushy on me, she offered to make me one. It came out fantastic, absolutely what I wanted, simple and elegant. She does the work out of her apartment, which worked out great for me since this allows her to schedule appointments for the evening so I didn't have to take days off or rush. I discovered Melfy on Yelp - unfortunately there isnt much information about her on Yelp (the address is also wrong) so I took a chance and gave her a call anyway. Melfy is one of a kind - she is extremely honest about what type of gown suits your body type; she is able to predict the number of fittings required and can even predict if you will lose weight or not. I only had a total of 2 fittings from the time I went to her (December) till the time I collected my gown (March). My wedding was actually in April and I was worried that I might gain or lose weight and the gown wouldn't fit properly, but somehow Melfy tailored it such that even after losing 13pounds from the time I collected the gown till my wedding, the gown still fit like a glove! She is also very affordable and very honest on the tailoring and how the gown should look.
