I have been to this Mellow Mushroom several times and I believe it consistently provides the best experiences I've had at any Mellow Mushroom. The Trivia Nights on Wednesday are always a lot of fun and the frozen jack and cokes are delicious! During my last visit, I was immediately greeted warmly by their host, a nice young man named Philip. He took me to my table and made sure to immediately alert my server. The Waitstaff here is always pleasant and prompt, I never feel as though I have to wait to ask for something. The food is tremendous and the atmosphere wonderful. We tried this place for dinner on a Friday night. Although it looked crowded there was no wait for our party of 5. They have a really nice seating area outside and high ceilings inside. The decor is fresh and inviting. Our waiter quickly got us waters and we ordered. Our pizzas took a while to arrive, but the kitchen looked busy so we didn't mind too much. However after four of our pizzas were delivered, one still hadn't reached the table. It took a good while after that to finally come - 80 minutes by my estimation. It was good when it arrived but something must be not working right if a pizza takes 80 minutes. Our server was very friendly and apologetic and he comped the late pizza, which was much appreciated. Overall the pizzas were decent (but not the best I ever had) and filling. I hope and believe that tonight's service was an anomaly. Mellow Mushroom is a great place to grab pizza in downtown Blacksburg, just make sure you've got some time! They are almost constantly busy and there's usually a substantial wait time both before your seated and after you order. The gluten-free pizza is pretty good, although only some of the toppings are apparently gluten-free. The wings, surprisingly, are absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend the Holy Shitake Pie or the House Special. I just tried using their online ordering system for the first time and it worked perfectly! In six years of living in Atlanta -- where there were many MMs I never went to one. To me a pizza chain like this is the equivalent of a papa johns, dominoes or Pizza Hut. Thankfully MM is better than those. Pizza was decent. We enjoyed it. A chain is never my pick but I'd go here again in a pinch. Service by Meagan was fantastic. It may not feel like it, but this place is a chain. The gimmick is a trippy Beatles-like decor and plenty of out of the ordinary specialty pizzas. The food tends to be really good, though be prepared to wait for it. Get the Shitake Mushroom. It's Amazing! We've learned that the best approach is ordering ahead and picking it up. The cheese pizza and various sides are all mostly good for kids. We just did a round and heard no complaints as everything was devoured. Good place for the whole family, minus the long wait time. I have been to Mellow Mushroom a handful of times as a student at VT and have had mixed experiences. Overall, the food quality is very good, but is a little on the expensive side for what you are getting (it is like this at every Mellow Mushroom location). The service at this location has always been hit or miss; therefore, I tend to just order pickup unless I am out with friends. I really liked this trendy pizza place. My waitress was great. She had a cheery attitude and was a really good sales person. If she didn't like the place, I would not have picked up on that. We ate there based on a recommendation from VTech. We ordered the pretzel bites and a large pizza with sausage and pepperoni. Thick crust and very tasty. I had a local pale ale from the bar. We were there before 6pm so the men course and the beer was discounted. The wait staff was very good and checked on us. Overall a very good experience. They weren't very busy since VIRGINIA Tech was on their summer break. But I understand it is a happening place when school is in session. I would recommend this place. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. This is by far the worst service I've ever received at any restaurant in my life. I am a server myself as well as everyone I was with when I ate here. I understand it is stressful on gameday, but I don't understand the attitude and disrespect I was receiving. We sat at the bar to begin with and was told they weren't doing pizza. Understandable. We ordered appetizers and drinks and put our name down for a table. After waiting 45 minutes for a table we were sat. Waited 20 minutes very understandably and later went up to the host stand to let them know our server still hadn't greeted us yet. After another 10 minutes we went back up to the host stand and finally received our server, Hana after 30 minutes. We immediately ordered pizza because we understood that our server was slow and stressed because of the gameday. I understand that gameday is stressful, as myself has worked gamedays in the past. We put in our food orders and drink orders all in one. Waited 20 minutes for drinks.. honestly forgot I ordered one at this point and was surprised when it showed up. After 1.5 hours our food decides to come out. Finally. At this point I wasn't even hungry. After everything and no check ups to see how we were doing our server brings us our checks and one of my friends check was wrong. She informed him when he was ordering that his woodford Manhattan was $12 and if he wanted a double shot is was going to be $17. I understand woodford is an expensive bourbon but if you are told it is $12 it should be $12. She brings the check out and charged him $19 for his woodford Manhattan. He informed her of the miscommunication and asked if she would check it. She agreed and came back to say "this is so weird it shouldn't be that much I didn't put in a double shot". He said okay and asked for a manager. She was hesitant and immediately had an attitude. Bigger than the attitude she had before. After 10 minutes the manager finally came over and argued with him about the price that was told to him. Eventually she says she will fix it and leaves. She comes back and throws the check at him almost hitting his face. He says "thank you" but she is so far gone at this point she didn't even deserve a thank you. Absolutely rediculous and uncalled for. I do not appreciate the blatant disrespect and disgusting attitude that was given towards us because of things that were out of our control, therefore I will not ever be returning in the future. Those are all good places to start. 5 minutes waiting for my late takeout pizza the takeout host told me it "was in the oven and would be right out." 15 minutes late and I asked to speak to the manager to make sure someone with the power to improve their takeout process knew my order was so delayed. Unfortunately, the manager barely apologized, didn't know why it was taking so long, and didn't want to engage in a conversation about how they might fix what I have experienced on multiple occasions as being a disorganized, slow, and inconsistent takeout process. In the end, my pizza was was over 30 minutes later than promised and when giving me the pizza, the manager never acknowledged the lateness or even had the decency to apologize. Too bad their pizza is so good, because the service here is really bad. **Edit: I just got an email long after leaving the restaurant, that my online takeout order was partially refunded because it took so long. Server was very friendly and attentive. Service was average though; ordered our children's pizzas 20 minutes prior to my husband and mine, but it came out a couple minutes after ours. When we told him our distaste for the food he did apologize, but then justified why it was that way and that it was his favorite. Food was below average. Pizza was all bread and grease. The hoagie was ok, but didn't have much flavor and just felt greasy. Children's GF pizza's crust was overcooked. All this to said and the food is WAY OVERPRICED. 12.99 for a small GF pizza and 4.29 for one topping. RIDICULOUS!! Mellow Mushroom saved me from a sad Sunday!!! Originally went to Macado's on UCB for some wings, but after some non-existent/terrible service, we made our way here. I signed up for the e-mail list, which got us a free appetizer (pretzel bites w/ beer cheese). We were helped by the hostess right away, and our waitress (Micah?) was awesome! Super nice, accommodating, and very talented (we got pictures on our takeout boxes). Thanks to her and MM, my friend and I weren't hangry/annoyed from Macado's. We started off with an appetizer (pretzel bites w/ beer cheese). The pretzel bites were good, just a little too crunchy for my liking. The beer cheese tasted like it was made of real cheese, not some "cheese product", and it wasn't too salty; went well with the pretzel bites. We also got a sangria pitcher for half price (normally $22) and it was very good; I wish I had let the fruits and wine marinate a little bit more before drinking. The best part was obviously the pizza! We ordered a Cosmic Karma and it was definitely worth the wait; crispy outside, soft and chewy inside, cheese pulls for miles, it was perfect. Was I slightly tipsy from the sangria? Yes. Did it enhance the taste of the pizza? Probably. But it was some pretty good pizza, and I've had pizza from MM before without alcohol. My favorite things on the menu are Cosmic Karma (pizza), Holy Shiitake (pizza), White (pizza), and their wings. I would also gladly buy their beer cheese. Speaking of alchohol, they have a large selection of beers. I came a time before this and didn't know of any beers besides the typical ones like Blue Moon, Miller Lite, PBR, etc. My waiter helped me pick something based on what I described to him, and I was able to choose something different from the more mainstream brands. Everyone I had spoken to said they had waited a long time to get seated since they just opened, so my dad and I decided to go check it out on a Monday afternoon. We were sat very quickly and met by our waiter in less than a minute. My dad is not picky so we decided to split a pizza. I picked out the Funky Q. Chicken pizza which has BBQ Chicken, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, caramelized onions, and apple wood smoked bacon, and finished with a bbq sauce swirl. The pizza was offered in 3 sizes personal which was about $12, Medium which is a 12in and costs about $20, and then a large which I believe was about $25. We went with the medium. While waiting I was checking out the décor which was very interesting. The pizza arrived in slightly less than 15min later and the server did a good job making sure we had plenty of refills on our drinks. All and all the experience was good but definitely pricey for a pizza. read more

When we placed out order for 2 pizzas, our waiter told us to expect 30 minute wait. After over an hour, the food we ordered shows up. Buffalo chicken with no Buffalo or ranch sauce. The last time they did refund our order but since it was after closing when we discovered we were not able to get it corrected. Waitress took the order but came back a little later saying the keg was just switched out. OK. Ended up getting a higher abv beer which was good. I tried 3 different pizzas; the shitake was excellent (had some sort of mayo on it that put me off but the overall flavor was nice), Kosmic not so much, and another (forget name) was good. Pizza was very expensive but well cooked. Ceasar was quite nice. Main negative for me is the beer list. How can you have such a long list without having much interesting? No sour beers of interest, no interesting hopburst true session beers (they had Founders All Day, but I can get that in Kroger) no Berliner weiss style, no Pilsner Urquell or Budvar on tap. I noticed this place was getting some awful reviews, so I had to throw my two cents in. I think this is, by far, the best pizza place in Blacksburg. Sorry, Sal's pizzas aren't good. As far as cons go, there is often a considerable wait. And even once you get seated, pizzas can take anywhere between 30-45 minutes to be served if it's busy. It's also a bit on the pricy side; small pizzas start around $12. Their beer and mixed drinks are far more expensive than other alternatives downtown. That said, it's still one of my favorite restaurants in the area. They take your number when you arrive and text you when the table is ready (we often walk around downtown or just leave and come back if there's a wait). I have never had bad service there and the food has always been good. I have tried nearly every pizza on the menu (except the Hawaiian pizza; screw those) and all are tasty, though I like some more than others. The appetizers, soups, sandwiches, and calzones we've tried have been good too. read more

I was sorely disappointed by Mellow Mushroom. I am dairy free and came along for the ride with a friend who wanted to try it. I order tortilla soup which was fairly decent and a salad with pecans, apples, and vinaigrette dressing. I asked for no blue cheese on it and it still came out with cheese on it! The waitress was super apologetic and returned back with the fixed salad. When my bill came I was charged a dollar to remove cheese! Seriously?
