I was pleasantly surprised by this pizza joint... I call it a "joint" because it truly is a good representation of a psychedelic drug kind of place. With drinks like "dirty bong water" and a shroom decor, it has an interesting theme. The pizza was great. We had to stop in to see what all the fuss was. Every time we attempted to visit the place was so packed that we drove off trying to give the newness to wear off. All the staff was super friendly. Our server did a great job. I read the Yelp reviews and FB suggestions from recent visits by friends. My best choice would be the Kosmic Karma. My fiancé chose th Philosophers Pie. Since it would be 30 minute wait to prepare - we ordered the Artichoke dip. The dip and bread arrived within 5 minutes but sort wish they would have taken 5 more minutes to get the bread warm. The dip was ok but nothing great. The Kosmic Karma was pretty heavy on the toppings which was a bit too much for me. The crust was really good. We decided to try each others. Once I removed the olives, mushroom, and meat - The Philosophers pie was really good. So we are left feeling like the food was ok, but wished we hadn't spent $40 plus the tip on a Sunday lunch for something that wasn't great. Since my last excursion, I was pleasantly surprised to have not only great (and fast) service, but our food was delicious. I'm not sure if they got new management or wait staff or what but Mellow Mushroom has really turned it around. On my last (happy, life changing in the I-no-longer-hate-this-pizza-place way) visit, my friend, son, and I ordered salad and a pizza, which were all amazing. My son got double cheese (always a classic), and the adults had the Mighty Meaty, which is just so delicious. That crust is just wonderful, whether you get the gluten free or regular. So good. I love good pizza. The gargae they sell for $6 at other places is not how pizza was intented. Mellow Mushroom is how pizza was supposed to be eaten. I mean I seriously love Pizza. The Chicken Bbq is my fave and MM is perfect. Most places around here use BBQ sauce that is way to spicy. Your mouth is not auppose to feel on fire from Bbq sauce. In fact this is what led me to MM. I always order for delivery and have only ordered the Chicken Bbq pizza and veggie pizza havent ventured to much else on their menu. The BBq is my go to. Dont be fooled by the sizes or assume the sizes are like a major pizza brand. I order the small and it is usually dinner and lunch for me. The dough is chewy and soft and toppings you can actually see. They dont dice them up into tiny pieces like everywhere else. The quality is extremely obvious and it will ruin you ever wanting to eat at any other brand pizza place. It is like staying at the Hyatt and then staying at an airbnb that double booked your house and forcing you to reside with Fred who does not shower. But can you really expect mellow mushroom quality at a place that sells pizza for $6. They have a large menu which is probably good too. The food here is great, but what stuck with me the most was the incredible service. Our server, Kristen M., was the sweetest waitress ever. Her kindness and dedication to making sure we were happy and taken care of was refreshing and quite honestly made me very emotional. I was almost in tears at one point! Since visiting the original Mellow M in Asheville I have been a fan. However , this location is missing something. ( Total visits 5 over 2 years) Within weeks I sampled the location in Asheville versus this one and there is something missing. It just doesn't taste the same. The pizza crust is not delicious and garlicky and buttery like in the South. The vibe feels more corporate / franchise. I feel very aware that I am a source of income at this store and not really a customer. The food and beer has been good but not worth more trys. I will go when I am in Asheville only now. We'd been to an event at NKU, were on our way home and hungry. Decided to stop and check out Mellow Mushroom. Our server, Hillary, was pleasant and responsive. We ordered a pizza (think it was called the Pacific Rim) which was essentially a Hawaiian pizza. Excellent choice! The crust had just the right chew and was very flavorful. The toppings were tasting and plentiful ( we left off the jalapeño peppers). We also got a pitcher of red wine sangria. While not the best sangria I've ever had. it was very good and just the right balance of fruit juice vs. wine. We plan to go back and try the "build a pizza" and "build a salad" entrees. Let's face it, anyone who puts a dining establishment named "Mellow Mushroom" in somewhere called "Wilder" has an ironic sense of humor don't they? The biggest challenge to this place is finding it. It is set so far back off the highway and roadways it is entirely invisible to all passing traffic. You frankly HAVE to know it is there... and even then you need some kind of sixth sense to locate it as there is woefully inadequate signage to guide you to its 'back of beyond' setting crammed into the corner of another one of those godforsaken sunken 'developments' Kentucky has a nasty habit of building. I sure hope the owners bought or rent the space inexpensively as in terms of 'location, location, location' it is more descriptively 'crap, crap, crap' That said, and given Mellow Mushroom's somewhat 'stoner' vibe, their predominant clientele is more likely to be students from the relatively nearby NKU rather than tourists used to a Barrel full of Cracker. The place is bedecked in what I can only describe as 'Grateful Dead Chic', tie-died t-shirts and Alice in Wonderland imagery in abundance. When you walk in you are greeted by staff standing beside what appears to be a huge colorful mushroom that reaches to the ceiling... and that's BEFORE sampling any of their vast selection of mainstream and craft beers from all over the world! And just in case you were under any misapprehension about their 'core market' they call their appetizer choices "munchies". 'nuff said I think? Their food is great but runs a little expensive considering the market they're in and presumably trying to appeal to. Their 10" specialty pizzas - thin crust, thick edged - run around $12 each, whilst the 16" 'sharing' variety (I use the word 'sharing' advisedly you understand) can go as high as $24. They also do good looking calzones and an impressive selection of salads and deli/grilled hoagies, so there should be something there to satisfy even the most jaded of palates. On my most recent visit I tried the Hawaiian Pizza which came out hot and bubbling, the ham, mozzarella and pineapple toppings generous and very tasty indeed. It has duly gone on to my mental 'favorites' list for the future. For all my neggy remarks about their location, Mellow Mushroom evidently does something right as the place has never been less than half-full on any of the occasions we have visited. The staff have generally been friendly, fun and attentive and the kitchen-to-table wait has never been anything more than 15 minutes. I just wish the restaurant was located somewhere a bit more vibrant and exciting... if only to give us more than one reason to visit the place and enjoy its tasty treats. read more

As a MM fan from other cities (Asheville, NC & Knoxville, TN), I was so happy to hear one was opening up here. I went twice recently and had very good experiences both visits! The sandwich, salad and pizza choices are extensive and the portions are generous! The jerk chicken sandwich (got it in a wrap) was delicious. The smaller sized Greek salad is still big enough to share if you're having other food. The Hawaiian pizza was also very good, but so far my favorites are the Kosmic Karma (2 types of tomatoes & cheese, along with spinach and a pesto swirl) and the Gourmet White. As others have mentioned, the MM crust is very tasty! Wednesday night is Trivia night starting around 8, I think. Lots of competition in the first round (maybe 10+ tables) the Wed. I was there, but by the second round it was down to about 4. Turned out to be a great night as the wine prices were reasonable ($24 for a bottle of Sauvagion Blanc), the food was excellent, we had an awesome server (Ruth) and my friend Sandra and I placed 2nd in the trivia contest. The only negative I have is that there seems to be an issue with the seating. On my first visit, the host wanted to seat my husband and me at a tiny table in a corner of the bar area. We asked for another table and ended up in a nice booth in a much cozier location. On the second visit, I was first given a high top barely inside the front door. This is a chain... but that's okay because it's a great chain! Their pizza is super delicious and just the way I like it - not a super thick crust and not covered in gobs of sauce. The hoagies are really good as well and are a nice alternative to pizza if you just aren't in the mood. I haven't tried their standard salads, but I have done a Build Your Own and was pleasantly surprised as the size of the portion. It was a huge salad and a great value for the price. Surprisingly, Mellow Mushroom also has DELICIOUS hummus. I highly, highly recommend ordering it as an appetizer or take some to go to enjoy at home later. I was surprised that I like their pizza better than Dewey's since I am a Dewey's fiend, through and through. In fact, the two places are very similar, especially price-wise, which makes my wallet pout, but my waistline happy, as these establishments are rare treats. I would even go as far as to say that Mellow Mushroom is the stoner cousin to Dewey's. The service at the Wilder location was quite good on the night I was there (a Monday night, which seemed a strange night for the place to be packed, but packed it was. Might have been because it was also the first day back at school for NKU, which is relatively nearby, but who knows?) Moving on, glory be to a place that has Magic Hat #9 on draft. This is the beer that turned me into a beer fan/snob. Essence of apricot? Yes please! On the table tent (you know, one of those little cardboard pop-up things that usually has booze or dessert suggestions on it), it suggested pairing a #9 with a "Magic Mystery Tour" Pizza, which I did, and ooh, am I glad I did! It was a lovely pairing, jalepeno with a frou-frou girly beer. I was in heaven. (My one complaint was they seemed to have skimped on ingredients, but they were very busy, so maybe that is why.) If my current semester at NKU goes as well as I hope, I look forward to rewarding myself with another trip here to test out more of their extensive beer menu, and to explore other delicious pizza options. Also, you've gotta love a place that calls their restrooms "Flushrooms." I should have checked out the facilities, but didn't actually have to go, so it didn't occur until later that I should have at least peeked in to check out the state of the toilets. read more

Pros: Amazing pizza, from the toppings to the cheese to the crust. Can't wait to try more of their interesting specialty pizzas. Cons: Very crowded at peak times, they have a strange tendency to close up shop early if they are slow, and the wait times can be crazy since you have to wait to be seated then wait 45 minutes for your pizza, but damn, it's worth it. This chain was apparently dreamed up out in an old college town in Georgia, and now has become a successful chain. After eating there a handful of times since I have moved to Kentucky, I can see why. This has to be the best pizza I've ever had. The atmosphere inside is pretty cool, obviously has the stereotypical hippie vibe to go along with their mellow mushroom mascot fellow, but it works. I can somehow imagine this place to be a great place to be if you have the "munchies", but honestly if you just want to eat some great pizza that blows a lot of it's competition out of the water then look no further. The specialty pizzas are where it's at. I would recommend the Philosopher's Pie or the Mellowterranian pizza, you will not be disappointed. I absolutely love this place, but I'm still only going to give it four stars. "But Logan, you just gave it a glowing review! What kind of monster are you!?" I realize this! Look...it's the service. I don't require special treatment, but I have had a few experiences that lead me to believe this is a place they need to focus on putting some more effort into. I have been there twice before the place closed, only to be told that they are no longer making pizza. I first heard of this location thanks two Yelpers, Tom S. and Carla G., who were so enthused about the food that I immediately threw that on my "gotta-go-there-ASAP" list (Thanks, guys!). So my boyfriend and I headed out this past week to see just how amazing this place was. **We had a weird first trip I have shared near the end of the review - word of advice: don't run out late Sunday night to this place without calling first. Otherwise, it's fantastic!! Despite our weird first visit, we were determined to check this place out so recently we ventured back in well within the hours of operation and got the opportunity to try their food. Upon entering, I loved all the different artwork and sculpture going on. It is definitely rather quirky but very inviting and enjoyable. We were seated very quickly and within about 5 minutes our waitress came to take our orders. We decided on the Philosopher's Pie and holy cow - we were not disappointed!! The food itself is AMAZING. The pizza we ordered tasted like a slice of cheesy heaven - it was almost a melt-in-your-mouth experience. It had steak, onion, several kinds of cheese, and comes with olives (although we ordered it sans olives). The dough is, I believe, gluten-free and definitely tastes different than any crust I've ever had before. It's absolutely divine. The selections they have are amazing!! They have calzones, hoagies, salads, and pizzas as well as appetizers/desserts available. The calzones are around $8-11 and you can customize your own if you'd like (basic cheese calzone w/ $.50 per ingredient added). You can also build your own pizza as well. The fact that they have dishes prepared as well as a build-your-own option for entrees is a definite plus. The prices are rather expensive - it's around $20-25 for a large pizza (18" - 8 pieces) and the lowest is about $13.95 for a cheese pizza (not bad!), but this is one place we've been to where we felt the price was almost justifiable given the quality of the food. The service was adequate; I felt our waitress was very inattentive for the first half of our dinner, but by the end she had picked up both in attitude and attentiveness. They also have a beer club which is awesome if you like trying out different beers. You can try up to 100 different kinds of beer! Pretty amazing selection. **Note: Our first visit did not go well. In fact, it really didn't go at all. We ventured out on a freezing cold Sunday night after checking their hours of operation to verify they were, indeed, open until 12:00 a.m. We rushed there and made it by 11:25 p.m. or so and were hoping for at least some carryout. When we approached the door, we found it locked but two patrons on the other side let us in. We were a bit unsure of what was going on, as we were certain we'd made sure that they were open and there were several tables seated inside as well. Upon entering, we were approached by a staff member within about a minute or so and he asked how he could help. When we asked about getting some pizza, we were told they'd actually closed early for the evening and we couldn't get anything except a beer. We left empty-handed and were really unimpressed with that experience. I wish they'd have something to alert a customer before they waste the time and gas to get out there. I'm only docking this one star because of the "meh" service and our disappointing first visit - other than those factors, it is flawless and definitely takes pizza to the next level. Was there for at least 40 minutes, got a drink right away and asked for a menu (had to ask twice, the 2nd time met with disgust), did not even so much as get a hello, go to hell or anything in between. Maybe I haven't had cheese in so long that I've forgotten what it's like, but I don't know the difference when I'm destroying a large pizza with vegan cheese. The only negative is that it can get insanely busy during peak hours. You'd be wise to get that order in or show up early if you're planning on having dinner there. Also, they keep taking my money. Mellow Mushroom has a commendable amount of accommodations for restaurant-goers. From what I'm to understand, it's vegan-friendly. (in Kentucky!) They also offer a great selection of beer on tap. Neither of those things are really interesting to me personally, but it seems to fit the bill for a large amount of people. And especially if you're WITH a large amount of people. And yeah, it's nothing but hipsters that work there. But the service has always been acceptable, and never dropped below what a corporate chain would deem acceptable. (And the same goes both ways) But I've never had a waiter or waitress that couldn't recommend at least ONE personal favorite, and they've yet to bring me a diet coke, when I asked for regular. So I guess by today's standards, that's a good thing. As for the atmosphere, the decor and menu font are about as far as it extends. At the core, it's still a business trying to provide a product in exchange for money, so it doesn't have a very intimate feel. Especially if you're at the bar clamoring for a drink, as it gets unbearably busy on weekends and evenings. (So don't even bother) But once you get your drink, and a slice of their pizza, you'll understand that the food justifies everything else. I mean, that's why you're there right? The food? 'Cause if not you'll hate this place. But if you're hungry, and can point to at least one thing at their surprisingly well put together menu, you'll be fine. read more

After about about a 20 minute wait Ernie stopped by to say our pizza had been burned and the manager would be buying us another pizza. Hey No problem Ernie free is for me! Another few minutes passed and Ernie delivered a Half Mystery and Mellow Mushroom Pizza. Not what we ordered. Poor Ernie Apologized and promised a small Hawaiian while we went ahead and enjoyed the wrong Pizza. Loving you Ernie Two Free Mellow Mushroom Pizza's! Another Few minutes passed and the Small Hawaiian showed up. Delicious as promised. We had no place to be and at our advanced age my wife and I enjoyed the relaxing wait in the pleasant atmosphere of the Mellow Mushroom Bar area. Ernie was upbeat and attentive and kept us Hydrated While we did some fun People watching. We were a little surprised we didn't see a manager but we had a great time and delightful delayed meal. Seriously good pizza, a ton of salad options, and lots and lots of beer on draft...what's not to like? Not to mention it's right in my neighborhood...yay! It was their opening day today, so I was willing to cut them some slack particularly on service and speed until the kinks are worked out, and they did need some grace on that--particularly on speed. But that was really the only hitch and one I'm sure they'll figure out with a few more weeks. They could also stand to turn the music down a tad, but it was tolerable. The menu has hoagies and calzones in addition to pizzas, but we were looking to try the main event first time out and were not disappointed. The crust was chewy without being doughy and the toppings on their version of a BBQ Chicken pizza were generous and high quality. They have both specialty and create-your-own in the salads and the pizzas, with lots of options for both. Pretty good value for the quality too--about $20 (before tip) to split a large salad and small (10") pizza. Other things to note: they have a 'beer club' if you want to try all the different kinds and keep track; they'll be adding a trivia night at some point in the future, and there's no smoking anywhere inside (woo-hoo!). read more

I went here with my family on a Sunday for lunch. We had a Groupon so I was interested to try it out. It wasn't crowded at all when we got there and we were seated promptly. My husband and I settled on a medium veggie pizza and we got a small pepperoni and black olive pizza for our two kids. The waitress said it would be 20 to 30 minutes. I was getting nervous because I knew my 4 and 6 year olds would get squirmy waiting half an hour, but fortunately it came out in about 15 minutes or so. I bet if they were busy it would take longer. The kids enjoyed the crayons and activity sheet. The veggie pizza was loaded with veggies. We got it without banana peppers. The artichoke hearts were a little weird and I could have done without the feta. It was pretty good overall though. The kids gobbled down their pizza so no complaints there. The crust was very crispy. Service was good, so that was a plus. I felt that the pizzas were a bit on the pricey side. It was good, but not my favorite pizza ever. Go for the pizza! I know, I know...everyone talks about how great the pizza and beer list is - but honestly I was underwhelmed by the beer list. Maybe I am just too much of a beer snob, but the list didn't live up to the hype for me and what interesting brews they did have were priced higher than I have seen when compared to other restaurants around the Cincy metro. I couldn't even compel myself to try a flight. They even had a flight consisting of domestics - yawn. I was actually so dismayed I ended up just ordering a pop. Luckily, the pizza did impress. The husband and I ordered two separate pies, mine a vegan with roasted red peppers and his with sausage and pepperoni. We both enjoyed these along with their in-house pretzels that were recommended. Our server even made sure to point out that butter was left off the vegan items. While that seems like a no brainer - it is amazing how things can be overlooked. All in all, I'm sure we will go back for the good pizza and service...we'll see about the beer. read more

I've eaten at this location several times now, so it is long overdue for a review. I like the pizza. It isn't thin crust like I prefer, but it's a solid hand-tossed variety. I have tried several different kinds, but the Red Skin Potato is my favorite. In addition to a good selection of pizzas and other fare, they also have a good craft beer selection. That's always appreciated. The dining room and parking lot are both open and large; however, they are frequently full. This place gets busy! Just last week, we drove down on a Tuesday night only to find a 30 minute wait just for a table. On a Tuesday night? Wow. To make matters worse, the service is painfully slow and can be a bit rude at times. It's not unusual to spend 2-3 hours here trying to get fed all while the server fails to come back for refills, to check on the table, etc. For me, the food isn't that good, and for a relaxed pizza night with the family, that isn't what I look for. Overall, Mellow Mushroom is a good place to go once in a while...if only for the food and drinks. That part has been consistently good. Funky decor, and huge selection of beer (they take it very seriously here, I believe there are over 100 brands and variations), and some delicious pizzas make this a great night out. My friends and I started with some apps (Bruchetta which was average, and Parmesan and Garlic Pretzels -- which were hot, doughy, and very tasty). We followed this with a Philosopher's Pie (a pizza without a red sauce but loaded with olive oil, garlic, cheese, olives, and more.) The crust was very heavy and delicious, and a couple of slices fill you up quick. No matter what you want on your pizza, Mellow Mushroom is sure to have it (Anchovies, Pancetta, Advocados, you can even have Tofu), plus they offer a Gluten Free pizza. Trust me, your hardest decision will be trying to determine what kind of pie to order. The decor of the place is amazing, with live music, an awesome patio (complete with a fountain on fire and space heaters), and nifty little "deadhead" touches around each corner. There is even a space for live music -- which was a really nice addition. The service was friendly and spot on, and the food arrived quickly and hot. The price was inline for what you would expect to pay at a nicer pizza establishment (such as Dewey's). Apps, Pizza, and Beer for four will run you about $15 a person. I guess I will be first to start the debate of Mellow Mushroom Vs Dewey's and give a slight edge to Dewey's since I find their crust a little sweeter and thinner (which I like) -- but decor, menu selection, and service I give to Mellow Mushroom. really, you can't go wrong with either. One thing Mellow Mushroom exceed at is desserts, featuring brownies and homemade cookies topped with Cincinnati's own Greater's Ice Cream -- which were rich, gooey, and delicious. Interesting enough, most Mellow Mushrooms offer Ben and Jerry's (that whole hippy vibe thing they have going fits in well with their decor) but I guess they thought "While in Cincinnati...." and I am glad they did. If there was a complaint, it would be that between the crowd, the live band, and the piped in music, the place can get a little loud -- and it can make it hard to hear your server or even your table mates. But the food, staff, price, and energy of the place certainly make it worth returning! So, throw on your bell bottoms, blast some Jerry Garcia, and enjoy some high times at Mellow Mushroom. read more

Came here after the movie primarily due to the close proximity to the theater and we haven't been to a mellow mushroom in years. We were seated quickly and our salads came out fast. The enlighten spinach salad was really good and my wife enjoyed her Greek salad as well. We ordered some local beers and almost all of them tasted the same minus the cider one. Mellow Mushroom has the best pizza I've ever had and their crusts are to die for. They have a variety of unique toppings and combinations for their pizzas and the unique names add a touch of flair. We've also had their soft pretzels and bread sticks and have no complaints. Another part that I love about MM is their abundant Gluten-Free menu. This is a place we can go with my mom and grandma, who avoid gluten as much as possible. where I know they will enjoy the food. My husband and I even went with just my grandma once and split a gluten-free pizza with her. It was still delicious! "What are you!!!?" I shouted out the window of my rental car on a recent trip to Ohio. The graphic design and signage would have me believe its some kind of Cirque show. Yet, including the words "pizza baker" makes me think you're some kind of chucky cheese red headed stepchild that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. I didn't care - I had to find out. This pizza place comes with a large variety of great beers on tap, and is worth the visit based on that offering alone. Only having been there once (so far) I can't comment on all the pizzas, but the one we had was very good, and they do offer a wide variety of pizza types. I seemed to go there when everyone else decided to go, but didn't mind waiting at the bar for a table. I don't want to give the wrong impression, it is a family friendly place and there were many families with children there when I visited.
