Fuck MelroseMac, and fuck Apple, while I'm at it. I'm not gonna do anything crazy like give up my iPhone or my MacBook, but I will complain on Yelp about some bogus customer service. So take that, Steve Jobs' ghost (though I loved you on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)! Matt B. and I bought a brand new iMac for my parents, a combination birthday and Christmas gift that cost a pretty $1,700. My dad had been using an unbelievably old desktop, and took some time transferring files and enlisting my husband's help in setting up the new computer. Like a day after he started it up, he got prompted to run a series of software updates. He clicked OK, and somehow, this totally wrecked his just unboxed iMac. Matt spent about an hour and a half on the phone with Apple's customer service, learning that he couldn't exchange the iMac for a new one (we were just outside the return window), and that he couldn't even ship it to get fixed. He had to take it to an Apple Store or affiliated shop. Since he wasn't planning on carrying a 27" desktop across the Century City mall, we made an appointment with MelroseMac, where the risk of dropping this defective fucking brand new machine at our own expense would be lower. MelroseMac is an Apple store, with a lower-case "s", that also does repairs. It's on Melrose, next to the Mozzaplex, with easy meter parking as long as you get in before the parking lane closes at 4 on weekdays. I wrapped that stupid computer in a fuzzy blanket (my neat freak dad had thrown away the box, in the mistaken belief that a pristine Apple computer would work) and drove it super carefully to the store. I asked if I could get help carrying it inside, and someone on staff did it for me, which was helpful. Most of the people here seemed nice enough, but I ended up having a full-on passive-aggressive fight with the guy who processed my drop-off. It was supposed to be quick and easy--we'd already told them the issue over the phone. This guy took the computer, had me fill out paperwork, then asked if the hard drive had been backed up. I wasn't sure, and said so (my dad is a weirdo who deletes everything, and had already gotten rid of the old desktop), and he informed me that we'd be out of pocket for any data recovery. I was already in a bad mood, and I commented, off the cuff, that it seemed perverse to charge us for anything, given that this was a $1,700 machine that broke before anyone could use it. Instead of politely saying nothing or, you know, sympathizing in the least, this dude decided to tell me why the policy was reasonable and fair. When I pushed back, he dug his heels in. We had a fucking five-minute argument about the fucking Apple data recovery policy for no fucking reason except that this IT asshole thought I was an idiot, and could not let me go uneducated. He was trying to explain the rationale behind the policy as if I didn't even understand that there was a rationale. I mean literally every customer service policy is about drawing the line where responsibility shifts between corporation and customer. I know when a policy favors the corporation, and don't care if there's a reason for it (the reason is money). He told me if someone stole CDs (CDs???) out of his car, the car company wouldn't be liable; I countered that if I drove a brand-new car off the lot and someone stole my CDs because there were no locks on it, I would absolutely hold the car company responsible. At one point, I asked why he was arguing with me when I was just grumbling about Apple Inc., the multibillion-dollar company. He actually said, "I'm not arguing. I'm having a friendly conversation." Anyway, I went home. A week later, Matt asked when the computer would be ready, as we hadn't heard a peep since shortly after my appointment. I emailed to follow up nine days after the drop-off, and didn't hear back for another three days. It took them twelve days to fix this straight-from-the-Apple-Store iMac. At least pick-up was easy, and the whole thing was free of charge (it's a good thing we didn't need data recovery, because that would've been $150). Unfortunately, I don't trust this computer anymore, and would be hesitant to buy another desktop from Apple. I'd certainly like to avoid MelroseMac in the future. I got told I can return some headphones and turns out I can't now that I'm here. Last time I was here I was told other misinformation. Better off going straight to Apple or a different store. Last time I left a bad review for my first encounter they messaged me and gave me a sob story about being a flagship store so I took it down but anybody reading this should think twice about going here because it seems their money is made being shifty and not upfront with costs. Matthew, one of the repair men, talked with me for an almost an hour after he took a thorough assessment of all the happenings in my computer. After a full diagnostic review, I went home to complete my to-do list of things given to me by Matthew and went to work on preparing my computer for drop off. BROUGHT IN LAPTOP FOR TEST, NOW WONT TURN ON. I had to bring my laptop in because it was running slow. They took a look at it and suggested I get my RAM and SSD replaced/installed. Awesome. A few days later, I come in to pick it up. They started up my laptop to show me what they did and it was exactly how I brought it in - SLOW. "That's not right," he said. Whatever, fine. "You guys didn't try to start it up yourselves to see if everything was working faster?" "No. We're gonna probably run a diagnostic test and see what the deeper issue is here. It'll be $xx to run the test." I gave them the green light. Then a few days later, I get an email saying, "Hey, it looks like you have a failing logic board. It'll require us to ship it out for further repair." So I told them, it's fine. I'd rather them put everything back to how I brought it in, compared to spending $xxx for the repair. I didn't get a reply until four days later, "Sorry for the delay. We can do that for you!" I come in to pick it up and the guy at the desk hands me my laptop, saying "You don't owe anything! We won't charge you for the diagnostic test. We put everything back how you brought it in." Odd - especially how he didn't try to start it up and show me the work they did. I get home, try to start my laptop and it starts beeping. This can't be good. I bring it back in and they tell me, "Hey, sorry. There's nothing we can do. You need a new logic board." The fact that they didn't run a diagnostic test prior to removing and replacing parts of my laptop is unacceptable. The fact that they dumped off my laptop to me either 1.) unaware of the damage they did because they didn't try to start up the laptop OR 2.) hoping I would take my broken laptop and leave - is unacceptable. The last thing I tried to do was save my files off my laptop, but they were going to charge me for it. I said, "Do you think you could waive that fee since my laptop won't even turn on after you worked on it?" So they checked with their boss and declined my request because they already cleared the diagnostic test fee. So now, with a broken laptop, I wish I had never brought it in in the first place. The frustrating part isn't even the fact that my laptop won't turn on, it's how they handled the whole situation. Super sketchy, super unreliable. Wow, reading the current reviews, looks like pretty much everyone notices how this place went waaay downhill. Too bad. This was my go-to store, because it was fast and cheap. Now it's neither. And, sadly, that's not even the worst part about how bad things are at MelroseMac these days. It took 2 weeks(!) for them to diagnose and replace a simple power supply part in my desktop Mac. When they gave me my computer back, I went home but now my back up drive wouldn't migrate to my computer, because unbeknownst to me, they had changed settings on my computer, and never told me. When I called to say, "hey, I just picked up my computer from you guys 30 minutes ago, and I can't get my back up drive to load onto my computer you juuust fixed. Can someone give me 5 minutes and walk me through this", they said "Sorry, we don't offer technical support over the phone, you'd need to bring you desktop back in"....whaaaat??? Of course, once I explained to the MelroseMac customer (lack of) service guy over and over and over again that they just sent me home with a computer that's not working properly after I brought it in and paid over $300 so that it....works properly, they reluctantly gave me the literally 2 minutes needed to fix the BS they created and I fixed the settings they altered without my knowledge. Also, the $50 diagnostic fee they've always charged? It used to be applied to the bill if you got the work done. Yeah, they don't do that anymore either. Shame. This place used to be run much better. Just picked up my hard drive after paying $50 for a diagnostic check and being told it failed. I knew that already, that's why it was there. Asked for a report, but not given anything. What I did receive was an email, confirming that it failed with the option to pay $100 more for further testing that may or may not lead to a repair at the cost of $300-$900. Payed $50 for nothing, and starting again from zero to fix or recover data from a 1 TB external hard drive. Here's what you get for $50.... So here's the thing; I used to work at Apple and I know how their repairs work. MelroseMac is a an Apple certified repair company, and thus they are required under contract to follow Apple's protocol for repairs. Apple's protocol is often to replace (very expensive) parts instead of fixing the part. There are a lot of other computer repair businesses that will simply fix instead of replace. If you want to educate yourself on it, YouTube Rossmann Group. If you simply just want to get your computer fixed, then go to Rossmanngroup.com (especially for liquid damage), and they'll often do it for much cheaper. I am in no way affiliated with Rossmann Group, it just makes me frustrated and angry how Apple operates, and I think they should be exposed. They also misdiagnose often; I've seen it first hand. All that said, everyone at Melrose mac is knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. read more

I wouldn't schedule repairs here. I booked an appointment through Apple to have my Iphone's battery replaced, detailing the repair needed. When I arrived the shop informed me Apple schedules reservations without checking the stores inventory and they didn't have the battery in stock. This could have been avoided if the store checked their inventory prior to the reservation and called customers to reschedule if the component was out of stock rather than waiting for the customer to drive in. read more

MelroseMac was such a painless experience; I'm so impressed. Booked a same-day appointment, and was given a 2-3 day diagnostic turn-around time, which they completed in a day and a half. Then, they quoted me a 2-3 business day turnaround for them to *receive* the parts they ordered for my laptop -- but instead got a call that my laptop was repaired and ready before the third day. I have noticed that everywhere I go, that handles Apple™, doesn't seem to care. Apple™ makes sure when you buy, you'll get the same price at any vendor. That may be as such but there is one store that is head and shoulders above the rest. That store is MELROSE MAC!! Myself and my roommate went to MelroseMAC, we had a screen repair to do and a hard drive upgrade. The sales staff provided us wit no help. We were told to go an order a new hard drive online and fit it ourselves, and for the screen repair I was told it would be 7 days until it would even be looked at, to which I suggested booking it in which was not an option. Only to leave it there for two weeks to be fixed. We left and visited macHORIZON who said they would repair my screen in one day and booked in a new hard drive no questions asked. They're an authorized Apple service center so your warranty and AppleCare are honored here, but beyond that, there's no attitude, no crazy lines, you can schedule an appointment, and they go above and beyond to be helpful. This place is great! My Macbook Air was making a funny noise. Panic ensued. On an Apple enthusiast's recommendation, I took it here. I didn't need an appointment. On listening to the noise, they thought it might just be the fan (fingers crossed). To diagnose it was $75. The next day they called, saying it WAS the fan, and gave me a quote to replace it. They thought it could take as long as 1.5 weeks to fix, but it only took 3 days! And they applied the diagnose fee to the repair. Happy happy! Super professional. read more

If you are an independent small post house like us. I highly recommend you be very very careful in dealing with Melrose MAC on computer purchases because they are very sneaky in how they want to get you for any angle possible. I purchased a 2013 12core Mac Pro "trashcan" that has served me well. That along with Apple display monitors, countless hard drives for companies like believe media, fm rocks, squeak pictures, a band a part and dozens of other companies over the years. I've spent well over $35,000+ at Melrose Mac, in Burbank and Hollywood. It may not always be under my name but I am the person who makes the decisions where the equipment is purchased from for my jobs as the lead supervisor, and I send the runners to Melrose Max for the purchases. Well it so happened just recently that I landed a very intense post production emergency on pumping out 16k of final VR content captured from 80k of helium RED footage. This was such an intense process that my 12core trashcan was not cutting it fast enough. Biggest challenges I wished to improve was to transcode red cine x files and render out of AutoPano faster. I'm well aware there are other solutions with PC but we have the approval to buy multiple work stations and we are looking at upgrading our macs. I visited multiple Apple stores in order to get expert assistance but time and time again that was a failure. SantaMonica Mac store was helpful in allowing me to try to do some actual render tests but their system was locked from installing software so harsh that it was hours lost with no progress. They recommended I order a 10core new iMac pro and I have 2 weeks to return it full money back if I don't like it. Well I checked in with Melrose MAC to see if they have a 10core I can test I was informed by Jacob Ferguson that they have one I stock configured ready to go. $12,000 investment. He assured me this was the fast system with the right sweet spot best bang for your buck and it will be a much greater upgrade. It was clear I'm looking to upgrade from my 12core 2013 trashcan to a 2019 imacPro 10core. This new IMac improved transcodes in Redcine X by 1 second per minute or transcoding. It was unable to render in AutoPano video. So there is an actual step back in upgrading. This computer is useless for our needs. To spent $12,000 on a computer that is 6 years newer than my previous work station. And not gain any improvements on these software and at these resolutions. Well there's really nothing this computer does for us. So I returned it within 6 days of purchase. Not 1 week nor 2 weeks but 6 days. And they went for charging an exceeded restocking fee. Let me make this crystal clear. I spend and create well over $35,000 in sales to this company with all the gear we use in the industry and as a Union DIT the hard drives we purchase from here. I buy $10k computers from here and they sell me a computer that can't even render more than 1 second faster than my trashcan per 1 min of video content and they are charging me a restocking fee. That's how this company supports indie post houses. It is dismissive to just promote and push s product that does not perform at-least somewhat better in commonly used industry Hollywood rendering software. For a computer 6 years older to achieve very similar results is not an upgrade that's a burn sale: you should not do that and then says well your stuck with that system or pay us a restocking fee: the item is over $12,000 that restocking fee is extreme. And for a product that cannot perform. This is an Apple product for crying out loud. Not some down-town ally purchase. This bothers me so much. read more

My MacBook pro had been malfunctioning for a few weeks ( screen acting funky, restarting on its own, etc.) until it finally broke down. I took it to the apple store and besides telling me there wasn't any water damage, they couldn't do much. A friend suggested I check-out Melrose Mac and with little hope, showed up expecting that they wouldn't help me that much either. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with smiles and knew that this place was different, that they cared. Josh, who works the tech desk, saw how visibly fraught I was and how I was at a loss and worried that all of my files were gone with no hopes of getting them back. He walked me through the process and told me that he'd do whatever he could to help me, and he did. He described what the data retrieval process would be like and even gave me specific tips on how to move forward after my data was retrieved. Great service , I have to say I am 100 percent satisfied with eh work they did. The tech who helped me out, I think his name was Josh, was totally professional. He apparently used to work for Apple and really knew his way around my macs. He fixed my mac pro and installed some upgrades on my 15" MacBook pro. Upgraded my ram to 8 Gbs, new 1TB HD, and got the latest software updates installed. All in one EASY visit. Lots of friends had recommended I went to the Apple store at the grove, which I did, but because of company policy they couldn't help me install off brand ram that I had purchased. So I was referred by the business team to go to Melrose mac, they said they were a certified apple reseller or something like that. Glad I came here, no giant wait, just really professional nice and patient people. Im going to bring my other devices here from now. Conveniently located by highland and melrose. Parking was a bit of a pain, but it was because they had a temporary no parking sign. Oh make sure you backup your devices and computer! I had to go home and do that before I did any updates, they can just transfer it for you but its really a great idea to backup your own files first you never know what could go wrong.
