After spending whole morning and some afternoon at the zoo, we were hungry and were looking for a place that had a good cheeseburger. The place I originally wanted to go was way too crowded, so I yelped quickly to find out Mel's diner wasn't too far away. We got to Mel's diner around 2ish, and we were seated right away. Our friendly waitress greeted us and took our orders quickly. I ordered Mel's classic cheeseburger and fries, and my kids ordered kids cheese pizza and kids cheeseburger. When everything came out, I was surprised at how big the kids cheeseburger was! I think it was actually same size as my burger, without the fixings. Also the cheese pizza was big and awesome looking. My cheeseburger was good, nothing special, but it was good old cheeseburger. The menu did say kids would get small ice cream, but the waitress did not bring them out. Have had breakfast, lunch and dinner and am not impressed. The place inside needs refurbishing even as a diner. Lunch turkey bacon club was good as turkey is the real deal but unfortunately they were out of root beer for floats. Breakfast was horrible, coffee tasted really bad even after they brought me a second fresh cup of coffee. Believe it or not you can actually get good tasting affordable food in Naples, Florida. Now, don't get me wrong, the restaurants on 5th Avenue South and 3rd Street South (Old Naples) are all excellent quality, but the prices belong to those who live in the mansions that the tour boats brag about. It was really a nice surprise to find excellent food in a restaurant that was affordably priced. That's Mel's. I had a very nicely done Prime Rib dinner for $18 and my wife had a strawberry quinoa goat cheese spinach salad for an equivalently low price. Nice variety in the menu too, and our waitress Anna was very friendly and lots of fun. Easter dinner was a fiasco yesterday. My mother in law called our meals days earlier and prepaid for the food. We were called and told to arrive at a certain time to pick up our order and to call on the phone and they would bring the order to our car. Here's what happened. We called the restaurant from the car numerous times and they never picked up. We sat in the car till somebody came out that worked there and I gave her our name and a list of what we ordered. She assures me she will be right out. Half an hour goes by and she's bringing orders out to every car but ours. So I venture towards the restaurant to retrieve our order. About 20 people are on the lawn in the heat griping about waiting so long and more people inside the restaurant waiting. Some people are cutting in the front of the line because they obviously thought they were better than the peasants waiting in line. The employees did not ask peoples names or when their orders were scheduled to be picked up. They took one person at a time and very slowly. They had no idea what people ordered and were slamming orders into bags without verifying contents. I waited close to 2 hours for my order which when I got home was missing one ham dinner, 2 desserts and 3 soups that we paid for. The ham was salty and tough, the green beans were watery and mushy, it was like something you envision people eating at a pententiary. People were asking for refunds left and right and one woman in line was losing it because she claimed an employee kept scratching her head and did not use hand sanitizer. I did not see this, but she assured me it was true. There was no water offered to people waiting in line, no sense of order or planning for how many orders they had to have know they took because many were prepay. I would have to say the worst experience in a long time and it would have been better to not be open then to run things understaffed, disorganized and without apology for the bad service. read more

Not the experience we expected. Good portions but my "world famous Mel's potato's " we're bland and lukewarm at best, my eggs the same. We were referred to Mel's Dinner by a very nice couple we met on Fifth Avenue, Keev & Cecil (aka the Colonel). They also told us to look for Adrianna. We were seated in a large booth and immediately admired the USA decor, flags and nostalgic signs (see photos). We had Eggs Benedict with home fries and a Belgian Waffle with lots of fresh blueberries on top! Everything was delicious! When I asked our server her name, I had a feeling she was Adrianna because she was such a pleasure! Adrianna is so very friendly and profession - a top notch server! We were at this Mel's last week. The service was horrible. I know staffing everywhere is short and usually I more than understand. But I never imagined a diner visit could take 2 hours. We were seated right away but waited a long time for a waitress. When Eileen our waitress finally came over she told us she was called in 4 hours early and complained about her job. Each time she came back to our table she retold us the story over and over. She was too busy to take our order so that waited. Once we finally placed an order we waited. Eventually 2 of the 4 people were served. The other two were not served for another 10-15 min. We only got that food once I got up to ask. We gave up on ordering dessert because we had been there so long. We were sitting in direct eye sight of the manager who did nothing to help the situation along. Ok this is NOT another drive by kinda Diner Joint! This is my second visit! Shame on me for not writing the first one. Although this trip was better ...here's why. Mind you, they are " under construction". All good with me, as I enter stage Left. There's the hostess, to greet you with a smile and a " don't you look lovely ". I was sold again. I grab a cozy spot at the " counter", nestle my purse on my personal rail and snuggle in. We were in town to see an eye specialist for my son. They only allowed one parent up which left me outside. I looked around for somewhere close with good reviews. Mel's popped up and it was about a qtr mile walk away. I walked down there and ordered up the three egg omelette with potatoes, and cheese grits! My meal did not disappoint! It took less than 5 minutes for my order to come out! They were busy which made it even better! We have to come back in a couple of months and I look forward to eating here again! Those of you that knew the San Carlos Park original location (alas, closed in '08) feel the original vibe lingering through this Mel's and most likely the other remaining ones in Ft. Myers. At the hostess stand, you see the seating options (booths/bar) and - when I'm breaking the fast solo, I always mosey on over to the deep red naugahyde bar seats (non-swivel seats, not stools) to take in the whole back-of-the-house operation. Why Quirky? To wit: - Those immobile red bar seats - Liquor line-up - Broadest spectrum of patrons (many regulars - who surely have their usual tables / loners, twosomes, foursomes, etc) from all walks. - Enormous menu options - not limited to the tried/true diner fare. - an inexplicable aural balance between the din of diners' conversing, the pots/pans of the kitchen, the subtle music piped in and the orders placed and received between the front and back staff. Mel's is TOO nice to be slotted as a greasy spoon, and nowhere chic enough to be on the "Taste of Naples" guide - yet too uniquely non-corp to be put in with the likes of national chains. We did not have our bearings in Naples yet and were directed to Mel's Diner for a early lunch. Social distancing was being maintained and we were seated away from other people. The menu was extensive here so we took some time to look over the menu. My friend ordered an iced tea and I got a cup of coffee. She ordered breakfast and I ordered the shrimp tacos which came three together and were excellent. I wolfed those down pretty quick and they were great. It is very reasonably priced. Went to Mel's Diner for Mother's Day. They where friendly and only waited about five minutes. Seem to be serving food up fast people were moving in and out no long waits. Lots of booths different sizes for small to large groups. Waitress was friendly. Have a pretty big menu. Prices seem fair. My son got steak and eggs and that steak was a good size and thick steak. Eggs and hash browns are fine little on soft side. Drinks were tasty and I was glad soda didn't have that bad water taste like most places in Florida. They have breakfast drinks that looked good. For a diner in Naples, this place is okay. Not one I'd plan to visit on purpose, but usually just as a convenient comfort food stop in a pinch. As you walk in, you see the historic decor that reminds you of an old time diner and that's kinda nice. And the menu with all the options is a plus. From breakfast to full out dinner style entrees, you'd be hard pressed to not find something to eat. My three star review comes from the service and the fact that we both weren't feeling great later that night. That didn't stop me from eating the leftovers the next day because the country fried steak was so delicious, and my moms hamburger and onion rings with special sauce were also yummy. The waitress was less than friendly, and just seemed annoyed to be working that day. You ever like a place so much that you go there twice in one day? Well, we ended up doing that on our recent trip to Naples and Mel's diner delivered two quality meals for us. We started off with breakfast. It took me 10 minutes just to go through the menu as it was humungous. Our food came out in no time and was very satisfying. The portions, quality, service and the price points were really good. Fast forward to later in the day, and if you're like us and not from Naples, you don't realize that basically everything in this town is either closed on Sundays or closes early on Sundays. Mel's was open. We called in our to go order and it was ready 20 minutes later. I got there and was showed our order assuring that everything was correct and the staff couldn't have been nicer.
