Mel's diner is very aggressive with its pricing in the off-season. On the billboard, they had a whole Maine Lobster for $30. I was. considering the lobster, but our server was not enthusiastic about the lobster. I ordered the grouper dinner with their famous chicken soup. I also had two sides. I chose fires and vegetables. The server also brought out some butter for my veggies. This was a professional server, and she was on her game. Service - our server was friendly and attentive Food - I ordered the Chop Steak and a cup of chicken noodle soup. Both were served hot and were very good. The soup had ample bites of chicken and the flavor of the broth was great. The Chop Steak (I have no clue what happened to the picture I took) was a large portion and cooked perfectly. The gravy was very good and the mashed potatoes were like homemade. Overall - I love diners and this was a home run for me. Came in with my dad for an early bird dinner. I hadn't been here in probably close to 15 years and everything was great, just as I remembered. Menu is large and there's no shortage of various items to choose from. I went with the Grouper Oscar special with a crab cake on top, spinach and key lime sauce. Fantastic! Service was great as well. The menu is very extensive. We arrived at 3:00 pm for a late lunch. I considered having an omelet, a fish dinner or baby beef liver. I chose the baby beef liver with sautéed onions, Applewood bacon, mashed potatoes, green beans and a salad with blue cheese dressing. If you like liver, I highly recommend it. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a 1950's diner. The outside of the restaurant is very distinctive, it looks like it is made from bright shiny chrome. Hubs went with the country omelette and hash browns and I decided on the two eggs with potatoes. Both our breakfast choices were served with a biscuit smothered in country gravy. It reminded me of a breakfast my grandma would have made on the farm. The menu has lots of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The best thing about Mel's is eating real food, not fusion or trendy, but ordinary meals prepared with fresh ingredients. They offer a variety of options for breakfast like pancakes, omelets and interesting items like eggs Benedict with salmon. Their lunchtime menu has plenty of sandwiches and salads, and for the dinner menu, think pot roast, meatloaf and fried chicken. Prices are reasonable here and Mel's is right off Tamiami Trail. Sometimes "new" isn't better. We visit Naples once every year and have always had breakfast at the Mel's diner on Tamiami Trail (3 miles north of the current location). It is now gone and we dined at this spot. It Is bigger - but grungy and dated. Our server was very good. She was responsive without hovering. The food was a mixed bag: My Country Fried Steak was excellent, but the potatoes overcooked and under spiced. The pancakes were overcooked. The Vegetarian Omelette was overcooked as well and the veggies lacking. I'll try someplace new for our next visit to Naples. read more

OK, the food is good. The atmosphere is OK. The service is good. The complaint that I have is the owner he treats his employees like garbage yelling at them in front of customers I felt so bad for my waitress. There is no reason to treat your employees like garbage if they're not doing something that you don't like you bring them in the back with customers down here and you have a conversation with them he never thanks a customer. He is extremely rude and unprofessional. Please remember customers made you and we could break you start gaining some respect for your workers. read more

Two of us from our office decided to get hamburgers from Mel's. It was a late lunch and we were hungry. The service was good and attentive. Unfortunately, the mushroom Swiss burgers were both overcooked to our liking. One was ordered medium-rare and the other was ordered medium but they both were served well-done. I did a key lime pie taste test while in Naples. Of the three pies I tried, Mel's was my favorite. A local grocery store was third for both flavor and crust, a local bakery had a great crust but Mel's was both good crust and best filling. It was the right amount of sweet and tart and the closest to what I make at home when I make key lime pie. I also had a very positive interaction with the gentleman who provided my pie. I wanted to like Mel's Diner more as I generally enjoy retro diners, but my experience at their Naples location left much to be desired. It's an older building and didn't have that much retro diner theming throughout to generate much atmosphere, and the music didn't do much in creating a fun vibe. They did have some nice pictures, but they were in odd corners of the diner, and out of the view of most of the tables. We went with the Tuscan chicken pasta and the chicken parmigiana sandwich. Both were fine and huge portions, but neither were inspired with regards to recipe and were very average tasting. The pesto pasta was ok, and served with decently seasoned chicken. The chicken parmigiana sandwich was a generous filet of chicken much too large for the bun, but neither the bun, breading, chicken, sauce, nor cheese was particularly memorable. The Caesar salad was a run of the mill recipe, but was serviceable. The onion rings that came with the sandwich were tasty, but came out a bit saturated, leaving some unappetizing pools of oil on the plate they were served on. If the job is filling up your stomach, it's perfectly ok, but I would have preferred smaller portions of quality food over larger portions of average tasting and unmemorable food. Our waitress raved about the carrot cake dessert, so we naturally tried it, but that was mundane much like the rest of the food. Service was friendly, but our waitress forgot to enter an appetizer we ordered, so wound up skipping it (probably a good idea considering the portion sizes of the meals). They have a very varied menu, so perhaps some of the items taste better, but overall this was a very average (2.5/5) diner experience for us. Perhaps one of their other southwest Florida locations may deliver a better dining experience, but Mel's Diner in Naples would not make my food recommendation list. read more

Went here last Thursday, January 11th for lunch with my wife, daughter, 2 sisters in law, a brother in law and nephew. I didn't pick it, my sisters in law found it and wanted to try it. My wife and I thought it was mediocre, no one else complained. I had an omelette and my daughter had a chicken Cesar wrap, my nephew had the chicken parm special. Not sure what the rest of the group had, but no one was raving about it. We loved our waitress, who was hilarious. Ate lunch here with my friend after work one day. The place was pretty full around 130 in the afternoon on a Friday. Old school diner vibes when you walk in, decor reflects the same. I decided on a patty melt, since why the heck not. We also ordered fried pickles and she got a burger. Our server was Duli and he was pretty cool. He checked in on us just enough to not be annoying or ignoring. The food was served piping hot. My patty melt was ooey gooey cheesy onion-y goodness. The fried pickles were also very very good. My friend scarfed down her burger in about 5 minutes. It is what I expected of diner food. The only issue I had was that the fries and things are a la carte. I had expected fries to come with the burger and patty melt, but they were separate on the bill. I may or may not revisit in the future. Mel's is a classic diner. We came in for a Tuesday morning breakfast on our last day in Naples. Service was friendly and efficient. Angela chatted enough to be homey but never intrusive. Food came out very fast and hot. I had the French Toast and opted to add fruit. While it was an extra $1.99 per fruit, the amount of bananas, blueberries, and strawberries easily equalled the price. The French Toast was tender and amazing. My spouse had the western omelette that came out with plenty of ingredients and topped with cheese. A side order of the pork sausage made in house really topped off the meal. Coffee was fresh brewed and hot and truly bottomless. Tea was hot and served in a large pot. We wished we came for our first breakfast because we wanted to come back. We will return in our next visit. read more
