After seeing Mel's listed as #3 on our hotel's suggestions of local restaurants, we checked it out for lunch. Entering, we heard loud shouting of Fbombs, over and over. Should have taken that as a sign that maybe this was not a great vibe. But we persisted, always up for a new experience. The bartender was friendly and nice and all was well until I noticed ash trays at every place. Shortly after we were joined at the bar by a woman who immediately lit up and shared her cigarette smoke with those of us at the bar. Since we had ordered already we felt we couldn't leave. Soon came our food, not exactly what I ordered, but OK. Not great, unmelted grilled cheese & Ok Reuben. Definitely a place for locals, as everyone seems to know one another & knows it a smoke welcoming environment. read more

Wings are excellent. But VERY unfriendly staff especially if Not a Local. Waitress was SLOW Never returned to check on food or take another drink order. Asked for take out box Big sigh like how dare we. To bad!! read more

Stopped at this place on a road trip a year or two ago. This year, on another road trip we talked about this little dive bar we stopped at and "what was the name of that place?" Turns out we stopped at the exact same place. If that doesn't say enough, I don't know what does. Please note that if you sit at the bar you will smell like smoke afterwards. read more

Typical dive bar.... But with REALLY good food! I got the mushroom burger and it was very good. My husband got the wings which were excellent and the "small" calzone that was big enough to feed a small army. Heal prices, and good food! The only con for me was that they allow smoking. Luckily we went for lunch so it wasn't very busy or Smokey. read more

Noone under 21 admitted, refused service. Tried to order takeout and would have been twice the price. Restaurant was very smoky, even staff was smoking. Not sure what the food is like but wouldn't recommend. read more

Hot spot for travelers and locals! This place has recently changed hands, and it shows. It's so much cleaner and more welcoming. The staff is nice and has a great sense of humor. They get super busy some nights and they do a pretty good job of being everywhere at once. There's often live music and DJs. If you are in need of a lively night out, it's a must. There are quite a few interesting characters that seem to be regulars but the staff keeps everyone in line. Overall always a good experience. I've only eaten the food a few times, their wings and pizza, but everything else looks delicious as well. read more

Coming through town on a Sunday and most places are closed except for chain restaurants. I love to discover hole in the walls with great service and good food. This place does not disappoint. The waitress/bartender was super friendly and anticipated our needs. Service was quick. We ordered salads which let me say that the problem with salads Is you don't get fries. Not here! Fries are served on top of your salad. The menu has many unique items including a 'window licker' wing sauce. Wish I had tried it. The salad was fresh and tasty. The beer was tasty and cold. Other thAn the smoke smell, which can be expected for bar. That said, it's a bar with the local customers and dark interior. For me, it was an experience. For my adult children, it was 'an adventure', not a hipster hang out. I would return and try another menu item but they might not though more from atmosphere than food or service. read more

Update: I have to say that this place has changed --- and for the better! Sam - bartender and part owner of this establishment - has been really working hard to clean this place up and it is apparent that his efforts have paid off. The food has always been decent here in spite of the drawbacks the place once had. Now - the food is fantastic and plentiful portions will guarantee that you don't leave here hungry after eating! The prices are good as well. And it's one of the few remaining smoking establishments which in itself is surprising. Praise to Sam for the hard work he has put into this place. Mel's is establishing a new and much better name for itself and I am a very satisfied customer who will be frequenting the place as the urge for great food cold beer and good conversation comes to me! read more

Mel's is an amazing establishment if you give it a chance. New management has stepped in and they are making excellent changes. The bar may look a little rough on the outside, but they'll treat you like family if you give them the chance. Give this place a try before you completely write it off. Food is good, and the alcohol is reasonably priced. read more

If you are looking for a cold brew and top rate bar food, don't pass by Mel's. A local favorite; they have the best tacos (on Tuesday) and the taco salad is phenomenal (everyday!). The bartenders are super friendly and although it might be a detractor for some- you can smoke at the bar. read more

Was a little iffy going in to Mel's, but had heard good things about the new owners. So we tried it. We went on Wednesday for stomboli it was delicious. We had great appetizers and the drinks were good as well. The owner waited on us and he was great. Bar was busy! Overall a great experience! read more

This is you quintessential dive bar. This is a local hangout and as someone from out of town and passing through this was a great find! Stopped in for a quick bite and stayed all night, listened to the band and had a great time with several of the locals. The staff was extremely warm, inviting, and friendly. The food was very good and there is a good selection of wings on the menu. One warning about the wings, they serve the whole wing! Next time I'm in the area I'm heading straight to Mel's! read more

If you want a truly "Somerset" bar experience check out Mel's. Their food specials are pretty tasty - I recommend the chicken wings or Stromboli. The head bartender, Sam is the best in Somerset. If your idea of a nice bar/dining experience is TGI Friday's or Applebees then Mel's probably isn't the place for you. When coming to Mel's - leave your kids at home and enjoy some of the cheapest draft beers in town. read more

Mel's isn't a bad place...but sometimes one or two bad people show up. That happens in bars occasionally...especially in a "shot & a beer" joint! But, I'll tell you what...I've had a lot of good times in Mel's. The food exceeded my expectations, the live music is excellent, and the bar service is very "spirited". read more
