I seem to gravitate to the same menu items when I dine here. I had the Blueberry Shrimp Salad AGAIN tonight. I didn't realize it, but i ordered the same as I did this time last year! LOL! And again, it was delicious! Tonight I added a local craft beer,a Juniata Shandy Stone. Very good beer and @ $6 a pint, very affordable. Our server was busy but took care of us well. Amazing place! We stayed for two nights, and would love to come back. Did you tell my wife about it before we got here, but as soon as we walked in, she turned to me and said "you won". The atmosphere is authentic historical since it's literally from the 1700s. The staff were super attentive, and very helpful. A special shout out to Brady who went above and beyond to help us with our room and anything else we might've needed. This was by far one of the worst meals and mediocre service we have experienced. The green beans were so dry and nasty. They appeared to have withered on the vine, then served. I sent word to the manager that "I would be ashamed to serve the beans." He glanced over to our table and walked away. Very poor service and attitude. I would have come and given a sincere apology for failing in his duties as a manager. The chicken was dry and unseasoned. Don't order sweet tea if you like your tea sweet. There seems to be zero sugar. The only bright spot was the salad. The ingredients were fresh and nice and crispy. Our server started off good, but once the food was served, he never came back till he brought the bill. The chairs are hard and uncomfortable. What a waste of money. We will definitely not return. This Historical (older than "America") tavern has an amazing cozy vibe with a wood fireplace that gives a beautiful aroma. Candles are lit as you sit down and service is very friendly. I ordered the French dip which was amazing (beef sandwich with Au Jus dip). Trust me- get this! The surf and turf burger was alright- though we may be tough critics because we are from Maryland and love our lump crab cakes! The crab cake was a little extra fishy tasting but the burger and fries were good! Oreo cake was delicious and the Eggnog Martini was spectacular! We also tried the Hot Apple cider cocktail with spiced rum which was yum. Sadly women's bathroom soap dispenser was not working though. If you're there, check out the gift shop. This place is great! It's a very cozy and historical tavern that was built in the 1700s! It has kept its colonial charm with the decor, metal dishware, and large open hearth in the dining room. The food is also very tasty. I had lobster ravioli and the oatmeal pie, which were delicious. They also have a little gift shop next to the tavern, which has some very nice gifts and decor for purchase. I purchased a couple Christmas ornaments. Anytime we're in the Bedford area we always eat at Jean Bonnet. I can't say much about the food because I always eat the same thing. There's a bison ranch, (The bison corral), a few miles west of the restaurant, on route 30, so I always get some type of bison product. My friends and family members have their own favorites. I've never heard a complaint about anything they've had. The portions are more than sufficient the beer is cold and they have some great desserts. We like the Peanut Butter Pie, with Whipped peanut butter filling in a flourless peanut butter cookie crust topped with hot fudge. There are two indoor dining spaces and a deck outside, they have a gift shop and rooms for overnight stays. read more

For 2nd straight time we had to ASK waiter for buns & butter (listed on menu). We had prime rib & had to ASK waiter for that item specifically noted on menu. We had to summon waiter & ASK for drinks to be refilled. Waiter was clearly disappointed at 18% tip but I thought it generous given interaction (or lack thereof). 2 of us are significantly handicapped & despite a gathering of wait staff (6 or more) at cash register not 1 offered assistance especially at double doors. Gave us only a plastic bag to take home leftover! So miserably dark that we had to borrow a cell phone/ flashlight to read menu. Too dark to reliably cut up meat. The 4 stars are for excellent food well & flavorfully prepared (correct spices) and served as requested (medium rare). read more

Jean Bonnet is a very old tavern and Inn, the low lighting and exposed stone walls of the lowest level restaurant give a cool atmosphere. The tavern on the second floor is a really nice old place as well. They still have rooms on the upper floor, i bet it would be wild to stay here, i'm sure as old as Jean Bonnet is there has to be some good ghost stories. We live over an hour and a half away and make the drive every few months because it's so good. The service has been quick and fairly attentive. The food is wonderful, try the crispy pork (if you suffer acid reflux make sure you take your medicine!) we prefer the original, but the occasional special black and blueberry version is very good too. Also try the tomato bisque if it's available and both dips (shrimp & crab, spinach & artichoke) and if you're in the mood try the frozen piña colada. I had seen this tavern from the turnpike hundreds of times over the past 35 years of travel. I always wanted to stop here but never had the time, until today. On my way back from east to west I got off at Bedford and in less than 10 minutes, you can be at the tavern. I was really interested in seeing the history of this building. And they print the history on the menu and on your placemat to make it easy. They also serve their food on period dishes, meaning pewter. The tavern dates to the 1760's. They have a large parking lot. I ate in the actual tavern, part not in the dining room, and I sat at the bar. They do have a full bar and probably at least eight beers on tap. I had a Juniata brewing IPA & a Loose Cannon from Baltimore. I started with their crab and corn chowder, which was really thick like a stew and quite delicious and it came in a pewter crock. Next, I had the French dip sandwich and the meat was very tender, and it was quite delicious. Then I had their July special dessert, which was a personal Keylime mousse pie with the best shortbread crust! Service was friendly and efficient. They also have a dining area upstairs and I believe downstairs as well. They have some additional patio seating outdoors. It is also a bed-and-breakfast and you can rent a room upstairs. This restaurant is supposed to be the most haunted restaurant in Pennsylvania, although I had no encounters during my visit. There is a cure gift shop in a separate 1700's log cabin that sells artisan crafts, gifts & restaurant tee shirts. I would definitely stop again. My husband and I have stopped here a few times traveling north to Pittsburgh. The food is terrific, the people are so friendly. Beautiful structure and if you're lucky enough to sit by the fire in the cold months, it makes the ambience that much better. My husband had the steak with sweet potato fries and beets. On an entire campus, there's a little gift shop, three goats (kids under twelve get free for free to give to the goats), a tavern, and a restaurant inside a 1762 historic space. Our last night on the road returning from our trip to Louisville. This old tavern was recommended to us. Our first time here. The parking lot was quite full and there was a short line waiting for a table. We were seated within 5 minutes. Our server Brianna was delightful. We suggest that the Owner consider cloth napkins. Always a nice touch. How about monogrammed napkins "JB". The wine was not presented properly likely a training issue. The only fries available were regular fries. Just asked to leave them in for 30 seconds more I like them crispy. My wife got lobster ravioli I got the sea bass special and started with a cup of French onion soup. The soup was ok. The onions were hard and seemed to have been just thrown into the soup. The pinions need to be sautéed. The salads were uninspiring. Spacing between courses was poor. Also a training issue. My beets as a side were great have not had beets in awhile. My fish was also tasty and well prepared. My French fries were partially toasty and partially soggy. After passing this establishment over 100 times , we stopped in for dinner. This building had been here approximately since 1762 and was a French fort & trading post! If the food was good, it break the spell that has u convinced u just crawled in from a snowy battle, looking to hunker down w/ some cider & potted meat. I was ready to dry my breeches & waistcoat over the smokey cauldron when looked down & realized I'm in sneaks & yoga pants. Thick stone walls, candlesticks, wood burning fire, smoke in the air- it truly feels like another time. Don't expect a gourmet meal or even food that makes sense. I ordered a filet sandwich- they literally put a whole filet on a hamburger bun, then asked if I wanted a side of ketchup or mayo for it. And I ate it, along w/ the salad dressed in interesting vinaigrette of chopped eggs & beets. The Oatmeal Pie knocked my socks off. It was truly good, olde tyme, & melted my heart that staff shared the recipe. These are good people. If you're looking for a killer meal- go elsewhere. From research I've done on the Bedford area, I could tell that the Jean Bonnet Tavern was an institution, and now I know why. It's got long-term staff who enjoy working with each other, a standard Americana menu, and a charming location. When I stopped for lunch on my way from Baltimore to Pittsburgh I sat inside / downstairs, where you can see the original stone walls and fireplace, and there are beautiful quilts hanging up. I had looked at the menu ahead of time and knew I wanted the chowder + a side salad so that I would have room for strawberry pie for dessert. While I was a little disappointed that the pie is half whipped cream (my husband's is 100% strawberries), I overhead another patron asking the waitstaff to save her a piece, as she wanted to make sure it wouldn't run out before she got some! After I paid, the hostess invited me to take the winding staircase upstairs to check out the tavern and the outdoor seating on the balcony, as well as the inn rooms upstairs from that. I also wandered through the gift shop (too many pretty things!) and visited the goats. Although there's a big flat parking lot, the tavern does not appear to be handicapped accessible. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised with our visit to the Jean Bonnet Tavern. We went on the recommendation of a tour guide at the nearby Omni Bedford Springs Resort. The building is clearly historic, which you can read about on their website and at the restaurant itself. Sadly, we didn't get to explore more of the building or visit the gift shop, due to timing. We enjoyed the variety of specials the restaurant was featuring on a weeknight. From the features, we tried the mushroom soup and stuffed chicken. From the regular menu, we had the french dip (recommended by our server) and the peanut butter pie. Everything was very tasty and exceeded expectations. Our server Caden was extremely kind, helpful, and attentive. He provided great service despite dealing with a large party near ours that sent back all of their food for one reason or another, with the father loudly throwing a fit about it. The only mark against them is charging a fee for credit card users. If the difference that fee makes is the make it or break it for your business, there's a bigger problem that needs addressing. read more

Today I got an October special of "Vegetarian butternut squash ravioli tossed with a light brown butter cream sage sauce with chopped dates and parsley" and it was truly amazing! Perfect blend of sweet and savory. We also got some of the Butter Pecan Cheesecake and carrot cake which were both delicious, and washed it down with some hot spiced apple cider. If you've been to the place before you already know the atmosphere is in an historic house with lots of vintage decor on the walls and a rich history of the place. We had the October special menu that featured butternut squash ravioli. The cream sauce was wonderful and balanced out the sweetness of the butternut squash filling of the ravioli. Kayla our waitress was so sweet and helpful and gave us amazing suggestions for us for things to do around the town. The dinner entree was so filling we were able to take half of it home but of course their desserts are delicious so we got some to go as well. We were traveling back home to Indiana from Connecticut and were looking for a nice local food destination spot. We saw Jean Bonnet Tavern pop up on our map app and it looked like our kind of place. It had great reviews and it did not disappoint. It was only about 6 miles off our route and was worth the extra drive. I had a nice thick cut prime rib with a house salad, baked potato green beans and the French Onion soup. All served on very heavy metal plates that added to the ambience. The portions were Huge and I needed a box. It all tasted great and the historically significant building with its thick stone walls provided a great atmosphere.
