The 2 stars are for the boys who help load the hay, grain or anything else you need - always a good experience with them. I've been purchasing hay from here for almost a year. I've had a few questionable issues but none to this degree. I typically purchase 4 or 5 bales of the grass/alfalfa blend at a time. Yesterday, I was shocked to discover how much trash and garbage was in one of those bales. I'm not talking about a piece or two, I'm talking about several brown paper towels, pieces of brown paper towel, what looked like wet wipes, small and large pieces of hard plastic, small and large pieces of cardboard, candy wrappers and some sort of fuzz/lint. I sorted through what I could and pulled out a few additional pieces of trash before pulling it for concern of my horse's health. I called Wheelers immediately and was told there was no one in to handle that kind of issue but she'd take my name and number and I'd get a call in the morning. No call. I called the feed store today when I had a chance and received a rather nonchalant response/apology. I was told I could bring the rest of the bale in and they'd replace it. I do not have a truck and explained it was a huge inconvenience for me to find someone to go pick up a picked-apart hay bale, take it back to Wheelers, grab another bale and deliver back to the barn. I asked if someone could come get it/deliver a bale and she asked me if it was originally delivered by them, which it wasn't, so that wasn't an option. She also failed to take much (if any) responsibility on behalf of the company in that they are selling hay of this quality. She said they have no control over what is in their bales - could've been a dead animal and that it happens. I am totally understanding in that things happen (even dead animals) but when you are in any sort of business selling whatever type of product, that's your reputation. You hold some degree of responsibility in backing-up the product you are selling to consumers, especially when it can negatively impact an animal's health. Pointing the finger at whomever Wheelers purchased the hay from seems like a lackluster response as ultimately, it falls on Wheelers shoulders. Wheelers has always been convenient, which is why I've purchased from them, but this issue has been so inconvenient I'm just going to take the loss, toss the rest of the bale and hope the other 3 aren't the same. At $19/bale, I have a higher expectation and for all of the inconvenience to fall on me when I did nothing wrong was extremely frustrating. read more

I love coming to Wheelers on the weekends to pick up my feed and buy treats for my dog who is loved and welcomed to with open arms by Mona. Mona is an amazing employee with animal/product knowledge which helped me to decide what items to get. Wheeler's is good at their pricing. Usually when I come into the feed store other days I feel like a bother to other employees to ask questions but Mona is super friendly with great customer service. read more

Pros: -They help you load the hay - large variety of grain for variety of livestock -Open 7 days a week -can pay with card -Avid animal rescue participation Cons: -customer service is consistently bad with cashier/front desk -some of front desk personnel seems to be related so tension among them is obvious and awkward -hay can be pricey even when quality is poor -Call to double check what they have available as far as hay, they may not want to sell some to you -a bag of grain that was half MOLDED inside, got very little concern when returned, said would discount replacement bag. When rang it up they took a whole $3 (10%) off, nothing done to get first bag replaced. -never returned calls when asking about quotes for hay. asked for price for a whole truckload and they pretty much shrugged it off. They must have though I couldn't afford it. -supplements and accessories in store are overpriced, drive to a decent tack shop or even tractor supply for better prices This May be a close and convenient place for grains. I love this store! I am involved with animal rescue and I have received help on multiple occasions from both Mr. Wheeler (the owner) and Jolene (the lady who sits at the front desk). They both care about animals deeply and do what they can to help our furry friends. For instance, Jolene just donated bales of hay to one of our local rescues when they were holding a Puptoberfest adoption event. Much appreciated! :) It's also just a really pleasant environment. Jolene has 2 huge but very friendly doggies, they look like dogs from some movie but I'm not sure which (Turner and Hooch??). They're big, red, super quiet...and if you ask you just might be allowed to feed them a treat, which I like to do because they "come alive" lol. Other than the occasions on which I've given them treats and the once when I brought in a tiny dog, they just sit there like fluffy furniture lol. When I brought in my tiny dog, one came to sniff her and she got so scared she peed on the floor :p. Jolene was great about it and helped me clean it up. It's not really a pet store so much as a feed store so they have some basic pet supplies and hay, alfalfa, and all the other feed you can't get at an ordinary pet store. I don't buy my dog/cat food here but I love to buy the horse bedding as it makes great cat litter that doesn't cost a fortune! Overall, it's just a really nice local business with nice employees who are both kind and professional. 5 stars for sure. read more

I wouldn't put a star at all but had to put at least one in order to give a review. I don't usually go to Wheeler Hay unless there's a shortage from my regular supplier. I will say that EVERY TIME I go to this place they mess up my order. The people that work loading the hay are not at all educated on what they're loading and they contradict what the office employees say. The girl in the tack store has Horrific people skills. Here's an example... I drove there myself to hand pick out a load of 84 bales of alfalfa. The kid that works outside showed me #1 and #2 alfalfa. I picked what he called #2 because I thought it was better quality then what he called #1. I went to pay Jolene and she said that the Hay I picked was #1 and more expensive. We went outside and discussed what the kid told me and all of a sudden she said there was only #1 alfalfa left, even tho it was VERY CLEAR that there was 2 totally different qualities and twine to determine that. I had no choice but to pay for top price for what the kid told me was #2. I informed them that my driver was coming with his retriever to pick up the load I wanted. When my driver delivered to me and began to unload and stack the hay, WHEELER/Joleen/ kid working outside slipped in 16 bales of some other kind of hay. I immediately called and complained and Jolene said that it was MY responsibility to make sure that the correct Hay was delivered. The thing is I DID PICK MY LOAD AND SHE AND THE KID PUTTING IT TOGETHER WERE THERE!!! So how is that my fault?? It's the responsibility of Wheeler employees to put together the load that the customers pick, that's their job and what they get payed for. The fact is they should educate their employees on what they're selling and perhaps send Jolene to a class on how to treat customers and not rip them off. read more

I've been to this store when I was kid and loved it then. But recently had a lamb that was weak on it front legs, thought it was WMD so I need Selenium & Vitamin E gel. BUT LET ME TELL YOU WHEN I CALL ALMOST EVERY FEED STORE IN MODESTO, TURLOCK, CERES,OAKDALE TO SEE IF ANY ONE HAD IT, NOT A SINGLE STORE HAD IT UNTIL I CALLED WHEELERS! I was happy to see that someone had it and the young lady who answered was so nice and helpful. As I entered the store I saw they had almost everything you need for your livestock and had some things that I had to go to many other to get there. And at good prices too! i wouldn't give them any stars if i could i give them negative ones. they gave my friends mom bunny food that was expired a year ago and now 7 of my friends bunnies have passed away. and my friends mom went back up and asked for the lot number and they got rid of the bags and now there is no evidence to prove it and they did it after she complained about it so they know they killed her bunnies and she didn't get the money back for the food and so she thinking about suing the place. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT YOUR ANIMALS TO LIVE!!!!! read more

Terrible customer service! I am very upset! I had bought a pad for my horse here. the lady at the register said try it and if it doesn't work bring it back and we can do a refund. it didn't not work out so I brought it back and there was a different girl Jolene . I gave her the reset and she looked at it and pulled a hair off like she was discussed and said I cant return it, I said why not and she said because there is hair on it and it looks like you put it on your horse I said I did, how else am I supposed to see if it fits? then she precedes to ask if I put my saddle on it and I said yes how am I going to see how it forms to my horses back correctly? she said I was supposed to put a sheet under and over the Blanket, I said I would have never thought of that and the other girl didn't say that when I bought it. Jolene kept repeating it like I was ignorant. ( I had not bought a blanket in years). the Jolene was very rude she didn't even ask if I wanted to speak to the manager maybe he could do sometime? no none of that I had to take it upon myself and ask. a week goes by and another lady calls and says the owner looked at it and said I cant return it, it has hair on it and the girl that sold it to me said she didn't not mean for me to take it and put it on my horse she meant for me to compare it to my other pad. so how do you get all that out of "try it out and see if it works and if not bring it back"? and another thing how am I suppose to compare when there totally different pads? I wont ever buy anything from here again!!!!! For those of you who didn't no, don't put a pad on to see if it works. read more

Had the worst experience at your place! The broad at the front Jolene was no help at all. I asked her a couple of questions on some dog food and said I have no idea what you're talking about. Now how can THAT be when you sit at a place where THEY sell dog food!! I suppose you need a d#%k, to get a reaction from Jolean. I absolutely love everything about Wheelers!! Each year when my kids get their market hogs for the Ag. Fest we make our bi-weekly trip from Tracy to Modesto. They always have what I need in stock, and the one time they didn't I had it the following business day. I love the sweet little four legged kids that hang out, and I think the young girl who works in the early morning,( I think her name is Jolene) she is adorable, and always so helpful. The guys are always ready to load the sacks of feed in my jeep and always very polite. I will continue to do my business at Wheelers for as long as so needed. read more
