We were looking for a new bbq place to try and stumbled across Melvin's. The reviews were all over the place but we figured we would give it a try since my husband is a huge fan of smoked turkey breast. We are so glad we didn't listen to the negative reviews. This place took me back to my childhood (raised on a farm and the butter beans are the closest to my grandmas I have found so far). We started with the onion rings / so good, sweet, doughy and HUGE!!! Wow. For our meal we did a 3-meat plate and upgraded to Brisket. Love that they give an option of lean, fatty or mixed. It was tender and flavorful. The pulled pork was great. My husband loved the turkey. We had the macaroni and cheese and beaked beans and also added on an order of the butter beans and potato salad to bring home for a bbq later in the weekend. The spicy gold sauce I could put on EVERYTHING. My goodness was it good. My husband loved the OG Red and took home a bottle of that. Overall we loved our experience and will be back in the future! Walking in the place has a pleasant atmosphere, TVs in a few corners for entertainment if talking to your family if it gets boring. The menu was well made and had plenty of options but not overwhelming in anyway. The employee who took our order was efficient and helpful, unfortunately he did not have a name tag on or I would have shouted him out. The appetizers came out quick and the food shortly after, we were a party of 5 with a decent amount of food ordered. Just so so. The onion rings(2 Giants) were stale tasting to me. I gave one away and only ate part of the other. I got the chicken sandwich as my main and it was decent. Not great but good. My husband and I love to support local businesses, so we decided to go to Melvin's on James Island. We knew it offered nightly specials, so I looked up the specials on Melvin's website. Thursday night is senior night, and we are seniors. The website stated the dinner deals are offered both through the drive through and inside the restaurant. We opted for the the drive through even though we have experienced very long waits at this drive through. So we waited anout 15 minutes to place our order in the middle of a drive through line. When quoted the price, we reminded the clerk that it was senior night and, we were entitled to the 20% discount. He said the discount was only offered inside. We told him the website listed the drive through as an option for the discount. When we finally got up to the window, about 25 minutes after getting in the line, we showed him the website from my phone. He came back after speaking with his manager and said the discount was not valid for the drive through. I called and spoke to the manager who said the sign on the drive through ordering area said the senior discount only applied to dine in orders. The problem is once you are in that ridiculously slow drive through line to see the small print which contradicts the restaurants own website, you are stuck and out of luck. The manager said he was sorry that the website was wrong. Me, too....good food, but very annoying experience. To top off the annoyance, there was a 10% surcharge for using a credit card. read more

My first job was at a BBQ restaurant and this experience was trash! I ordered BBQ Chicken with BBQ sauce on top with a side of sauce. The chicken came barely warm with NO sauce and was dry. Lima beans and green beans were mid. Maybe it's better inside the restaurant but I would NOT recommend ordering to deliver. And maybe it's just this location. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but this is a definite must go to you like barbecue. This place is beyond words from the sandwiches, which are really good cooked to perfection. Hamburgers are out of this world. I can't even describe the onion rings, except for Four mouthwatering and fantastic. Friday lunch deal is bomb when I came here with my 3 buddies. Last time I was with one of these buddies, we went to go eat chicken. Instead of getting chicken at the chicken place he got red snapper and ate the eye and had cold sweats that night. This place doesn't do that, but he did order the brisket. And the young lady at the drive threw Tiffany was absolutely amazing. Because she offered the best customer service I've ever seen I will definitely be coming back. This particular Melvins is my favorite! It is always busy, not too long, but worth it. Super friendly staff and radical customer service to boot. I ordered the big pulled pork sandwich with collard greens. And let me tell ya, their mustard sauce is some of the best compliment to pour over that sweet, smoky and moist pulled pork sandwich. This is just good Carolina barbecue. My family have gone to Melvins and the sibling restaurant Bessingers (very similar food, some unknown family disagreement led to the formation of two separate restaurants I think). I've had their barbecue many times and it's awesome with a good Carolina mustard sauce. The baskets come with fries and an onion ring which I usually get and love. This most recent visit I got a bacon cheeseburger on a whim and was super glad I did, it was delicious and hit the spot! I gave only 4 stars maybe in a selfish way in that it all still tastes like a restaurant and I can reach that 5th star with barbecue if I make it at home. But for those lazy days or when company is in town and you can't cook, Melvins is a great place to go! It's a cool environment inside and it's usually packed for a reason. Food is pretty good, I love my pulled pork sandwich with a Mac and cheese side, and their other items such as the burgers are great too! Have had some subpar experiences with drive thru orders and communication but it's never something to worry about. Good food and good times, a great blend between quick food and fine dining. The Nachos are BACK! The fact that Melvins is one of the oldest BBQ restaurants in SC shines through with all of their meats and dishes. The staff is almost always exceptionally friendly.
