I'm a frequent eater of smoked pig pulled and piled high. I travel the BBQ trail. My preference is Lexington NC style with red slaw. This wasn't that. But, for what it is, it was good. I had a big pork sandwich with white slaw. I ate it all. This was heavily smoked on real wood. If I had to guess, oak and apple. But I'm not sure. It had a nice smoke flavor and the ring was thick. I couldn't tell if it was shoulder or whole hog but it was plenty moist and tender. They do SC Gold (mustard base) sauce here. It is in SC. If you keep an open mind, it's pretty good. If you're only comfy with one style that isn't SC Gold, you'll not be happy. If you don't know much about BBQ pork - you'll probably like this fine if you don't drown it in a KC sugar sauce. I'd have liked this more with a western NC red slaw - this was a touch sweet for me. I've heard good things about their brisket too but this here ain't Texas, I'll stick to the smoked pig. Ma'am, would you like slaw, mustard and onions on your chili dog? Of course I would! And am I glad I did! I could barely get my mouth around it, but some foods are worth it. This place keeps reinventing itself to keep up with the times. They began this time by repainting the exterior. It went from red to grey. The menu had been changed as well. No other restaurant in the area has a condiment bar like this one. The beets were perfect. And there's so much more....peppers, lemons just to name two more. So you've guessed it. I got the chili dog with all the fixings. I started with the beets and my husband ordered the burger. The chili was so good I could have eaten it by itself. I love their steak fries. If you think this is good then I'd say try someplace else. It's quite expensive too. 2 meat combo with two sides, and 6 wing meal with sides was $40, no drinks no tip in that straight carry out. Ribs were large but very dry and a lot of cartilage, did I mention dry?, yep very. Pulled pork was very moist, tender and large serving but bland flavor. Very good sauces saved the day, highlight of the meal. Mac n cheese average southern style, sweet potato soufflé was good, smooth and sweet. Wings were also dry and over cooked, butter beans were salty to the point of being inedible. They packed up sauces, silverware, napkins etc, came with pickles and cornbread too. Wow, I dont know what to say... In the sand which area, they offer a three rib sandwich, it is three ribs, on the bone, with 2 slices of bread on the side. It is not a sandwich at all. My friend and I ordered the six rib meal and the sandwich so we could try them both. WHY would I waste my money on a sandwich if all it was is 3 more ribs. Yes, I am ranting on this because we spent a lot of money for being our 1st time here. I, also told them it was our 1st time. Okay, so on to the food, the sides tasted bland, we had the mac and cheese and it was runny and bland. The coleslaw was very wet, which some people may like swimming coleslaw but I dont. The bar-b-que was okay, I did have to add a lot of sauce to get some real flavor to it. I would not put this in the running with our other lowcountry bar-b-que places as we have some really great places. Sorry Melvins, you did not hit the mark for me and I spent enough money and not sure I want to spend more to give you a second chance. We choice Melvin's and boy did that decision pay off. I ordered a d2 meat combo with double ribs and 2 sides of collard greens and an extra side of max n cheese. I, also, ordered a 1/2 chicken meal (all dark meat) with sweet potato casserole and french fries. My family ordered a 2 meat combo meal (ribs and chicken wings) with sweet potato casserole, mac n cheese and 2 extra sides (fried okra and mac n cheese. All of the food was absolutely delicious. So good, in fact, that we will be returning another night while we are in town. This place truly deserves 7 outta 5 stars. Its that good. read more

We love Bar B Q, so a visit to the low country must involve a search for good BBQ. We were tired from our trip and decided to look for a place with delivery, drive through, or sit down. Melvin's checked all the boxes. It did not disappoint! I wanted brisket, but they were out, so I had the pulled pork. It was delicious! There is a long list of sides & I tried the sweet potato soufflé & it was full of nuts, which I LOVED! The hush puppies were a little over cooked. This restaurant has become our favorite go to BBQ place in S. Mt Pleasant. The ribs and pull pork are the best here. For sides, we love their slaw and onion rings. They have an additional dining room that is pleasantly decorated and away from the crowded main dining room. Service is speedy. read more

I used to own a bbq restaurant so i appreciate what they are trying to do here. The beef brisket was so fatty i couldn't eat it but i know many people like it this way. The sides were really good. The cole slaw excellent and freshly made! Excellent sweet potatoes and good cornbread. The ribs were very good. Spare ribs not baby back but still good. My husband had the pulled pork. Good flavor but if you dint like a vinegar based sauce you'll be in hog heaven but if you don't theres no options. Totally out of mac and cheese and no pie. I know we came late on a Friday night. In SC from Florida and was so excited to try Melvin's. Ordered delivery as I am here with my elderly grandmother. There was no option to order lean on the brisket sandwich on the DoorDash app so I called the restaurant and spoke to someone who assured me that I would get lean brisket. She took my name, I placed the order on Door Dash and the brisket came with tons of fat. And was dry. We also had the mac & cheese that was very dry like it had been sitting around for hours. The barbecue beans were good, the pulled pork was good, the hush puppies were good. But overall Melvins was a big disappointment for us. read more

This place had amazing customer service - first and foremost. We appreciated that part. Unfortunately, the meats were dry. My husband and I both got the 2meat/2side meals (both had brisket and one each: ribs/pulled chicken) and sadly, we both left most of it on the plate. I liked the Mac n cheese but the Cole slaw missed some flavor. It was a great atmosphere and the options for BBQ sauce were fair - but I think this just made me realize I like a juicier meat with a savory sauce, of which this had neither. The cornbread was a different texture and quite flavorful. We enjoyed our visit to the "best BBQ" but it didn't live up to our hopes. You can either fork over cash or credit at a quality restaurant like Tavern & Table, Grace & Grit, or Graze; or you can assemble a fine dining quality meal yourself, using trusted purveyors of excellent local food and drink. As long as you have a kitchenette of some sort in your hotel room or at least a sink, mini fridge, and table or bar space, and access to wine glasses and ice buckets, you're good to go! How to make a Michelin starred meal from scratch right in the privacy of your own hotel room? Sounds like another job for the Ten Easy Steps!! Step 1: get some seriously good smoked meats from Melvin's. All their meats are hickory smoked by a seasoned Carolina style BBQ pitmaster. The chopped pork with "Golden Secret" mustard sauce, plus an order of lean sliced beef brisket, is a great way to go, but you could add ribs, chicken, or turkey if desired. Stick with to go orders of the smoked meats and pass on sides, for now. Step Two: Plan on a return visit to Melvin's for dine in service. Enough said. Step Three: Walk or drive to nearby Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. I prefer the latter. Get European artisanal cheese, fresh greens, Persian baby cucumbers, fresh bread, crackers, antipasti, and throw in some smoked trout or wild Sockeye salmon for good measure. I ordered uber eats from this restaurant tonight to be delivered to the Marriott, clearly a hotel. I paid $50 for brisket with NO bbq sauce despite the 3 I requested and a salad with NO dressing AND NO UTENSILS . Lazy, lazy lazy!!!! Stopped for lunch today. Hubby has ribs, butter beans and hash/rice. I had the brisket chopped and mixed with Mac and cheese and onion rings. We got there before the lunch rush and our order was taken quickly. Our food came out quickly. Hubbies ribs were a bit over charred but were still moist. He loved the butter beans. The hash was another story. It is some meat made into a hash and served over rice. This was our first time trying this hash. The flavor was meaty but the texture was very off putting, tasting very mushy. I ordered the brisket chopped and a mix of lean and fatty. It was good but a bit more char than our last visit. I had Mac and cheese which was delicious. I was excited to try the onion rings, but was disappointed. The breading was so thick and the onion so thin. It tasted like a funnel cake the onion was totally lost in the breading. We'll use up our gift card and then won't be back. read more

First of all I will admit the food is great except the mac and cheese it was way over salted. Oh and the majority of the soft drinks were low on syrup. My main issue is the service. We placed our order and everything seemed fine. The food was then brought out and one of the orders was wrong. It was a simple mistake we were missing an appetizer and instead of having it the appetizer was a side. So we were missing one of our sides and in its place was the appetizer as a side. We let the employees know what was wrong and an employee who did not take our order came over and said that was what we ordered. I'm not sure how this employee knew what we ordered as they did not take our order. We tried to explain the issue and they continued to say "this is what you ordered" when it simply was not. Eventually the employee who took our order came over and apologized that they did not input the order correctly. Anyway nothing else came from it no offer to get the missing side or bring more of the item that should have been the appetizer. I mean really when you're dropping at least $20 for each person in your party the least they can do is bring out your missing side and not adamantly argue with you. read more

We were very pleased with Melvin's. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The only time our table was visited was when our food was brought out. I'm not sure if that was SOP or not, but it took the experience down a bit having to get up for refills, especially for those who were dining outside. No complaints otherwise. read more

Instead of making them move the cashier had the entire drive thru line wait until they completed their order. By the time I returned to my office, 2 miles away, my food was room temperature. VERY DISAPPOINTING! I understand being nice and taking their order, but maybe next time do like so many others and have them move up. I tried calling several times, but no answer.
