The Southern Bar & Grill is a great local hangout in Mt. Pleasant. The interior has humorous things on the wall, dollar bills signed and stapled to the bar, and a great vibe in a very clean environment. We had to try the Apple Pie shots since everyone seems to talk about them. This is way more complex than some apple flavor liquor. The ingredients take some prep work, and the result is something that literally tastes like apple pie. If they bottled this, I would definitely buy it. They have two specialty drinks, the Freshy and the Orange Crush, both of which are made with fresh squeezed juice squeezed right when you order. I had the Freshy which is orange or grapefruit juice with your favorite liquor. I chose grapefruit with vodka and even though I am not a huge fan of grapefruit the freshness and tartness of the drink made it quite enjoyable. My wife had the Orange Crush with Deep Eddy's O.J vodka, Triple Sec, Sprite and some of that fresh squeezed orange juice. It was nice and sweet which was good since we were ordering a lot of savory options. The Potato Skins arrived first and they were truly impressive. Good sized skins with the perfect amount of potato, not too thick or too dry and definitely homemade. They had mixed cheese, bacon and green onions served with sour cream also loaded with green onions. As far as all the potato skins I have had these were a standout. Next came the onion rings with an absolute massive serving for just eight dollars. You could tell they were homemade and served with a chili garlic sauce. The best part was the batter coating which was crispy yet didn't fall off when bent or bitten. They reheated nicely in the air fryer. Next, we tried the Toasted Raviolis which were filled with Italian sausage and served with a house made marinara. They were nice and crispy, but the true star was the marinara sauce which was thick and chunky with parmesan mixed all throughout. I wish they had more dishes that used this sauce as it was excellent. On the advice of some regulars, I tried the chicken fingers which were all breast meat, dill brined and hand battered. It was good advice since the chicken was juicy and tender with a flavorful coating. Sometimes it pays to ask. My wife ordered the thing they are known for their Philly Cheesesteak. She decided on double meat, and they were super generous to the point she looked at me and said, "I don't know how I am going to finish this!". This cheesesteak gets nominate for a lot of best of lists and I could see why. I liked that the cheese was mixed in with the meat and not just poured on top. She enjoyed it but said next time she will order it as is. This is a great place to hang out and relax and maybe catch a band or some bluegrass and enjoy a great meal! read more

What can I say? My friends and I love this place. We are here more often than we are anywhere else. The owner-employee's friendliness and the feel of the space are welcoming. It's a bar but with many 'homemade' reasons to visit. Let me start with the freshly squeezed citrus. Sorry, but my powers of observation are keen, and I do not see many other places doing what The Southern does. They squeeze both fresh grapefruit and fresh oranges continuously -- as in, it never stops. They take pride in serving their signature cocktail, A Freshy, made with vodka, fresh grapefruit, and a splash of cranberry. It's $7 during happy hour, and the grapefruit juice alone is worth that price. I seem to always gravitate to the carbs when I visit. Homemade potato skins and homemade, hand-battered GIANT onion rings. The skins start as baked potatoes that are lightly scooped and filled with plenty of cheese and bacon. I make a point of saying 'very lightly scooped' because these skins are meaty! There is quite a lot of potato left here before they add the cheese, so it's a meal I can barely finish -- four to a serving with green onions and heaps of sour cream for $10. The onion rings are finished with the tiniest bit of sea salt right when they come out of the fryer. They may just be the best original recipe onion rings I have tasted, and you get quite a pile for $8. The service is great, and there are always bartenders hustling drinks and hustling food to all the tables. They are the hardest group of owner-employees out there, and the way they care about what goes out to customers shows. Again, this is a bar. But it is also a gathering place for locals. The cheeseburger from The Southern is one of my favorite burgers in town. It's a simple, no frills absolutely delicious burger. It's what a cheeseburger is supposed to be. I really love it (just as much as their cheesesteak) and is such a good deal! I was trying to be a little healthy so I got their house salad as my side. It was huge and I ended up taking it home to eat at work the next day. Also pictured are their onion rings which we ordered for us to share. They are sooo good, but I controlled myself and only had one. And of course, no trip to The Southern would be complete without a shot of their delicious apple pie concoction. One of the best cheesesteaks I have had that are not in the Philadelphia region. The place is definitely a dive bar, catering to the locals of Mt P, which is a good sign overall when it comes to a bar in a strip mall. It's a small seating area with a stage for live music. You order at the bar at least on the night we went. The beer choices were sold though there were a lot of the big names and not too many locals on tap. The cheesesteak was filling and made well. The key was the cooper sharp cheese as the option, which sent the authentic flavor over the top. The roll was not a roll of the north, but it held up well to my double meat sandwich. Do not get double cheese the roll just can't take it. The onion rings were a solid option as well, though if you don't like a blooming onion at Outback like my wife, these may not be your best choice. If we are back for a longer trip we will be back. read more

What started as a convenient place to grab a drink before or after a night out has now turned into our destination for evenings when we don't feel like heading all the way downtown. The staff is always great--friendly, kind, and really make the place feel welcoming. They live music is also a great addition! The food is another reason we keep coming back. Their chicken tenders are hands down some of the best we've ever had, crispy and perfectly cooked. And I have to say, their Philly cheesesteak (with extra cheese) is one of my favorite things to eat in Charleston, especially paired with their onion rings (and whatever sauce they pair with the onion rings)! Oh, and the apple pie shots? We still don't know what's in them, but they've become a staple for us every time we visit. We ordered off the brunch/lunch menu and it was a Sunday around 1:30 in the afternoon. I ordered the brunch burger with hash brown casserole, my son got lemon pepper wings, my friend ordered the Philly, and his son got an egg and bacon sandwich without cheese. Other that subtracting the cheese, everything was ordered as it was listed on the menu. The egg and bacon sandwich came out with cheese, and my brunch burger came out with salty fries instead of the hash brown casserole. I get that mistakes can be made but our order wasn't complicated nor overwhelming. After they corrected his egg and bacon sandwich the delay caused him to not finish his sandwich until after 2 pm which was the cutoff for the brunch/lunch menu. He was still hungry and wanted to order a second sandwich and they said he could not order it. Number one, anyone can make an egg and bacon sandwich and 2, the only reason his request came after 2 was because they screwed up his first order. Everyone liked the restaurant and the casual nature of the decor. My other beef was when we requested the check it took forever and when we were ready to leave to get on the road back to Charlotte, we had to take our checks and CC to the bar to get them to ring us out. It was as if he forgot about us after dropping off the checks. My son liked the wings and my friend enjoyed the Philly which is the reason for the 3 stars earned. Me and my wife stopped in for lunch today. Got there around 11:30 and they had just opened. Not sure if he was the manager or owner, but we were greeted right away, and he was super nice. They don't have a large menu, but what they do they do well. We've been twice, and I got the cheesesteak both times. It is outstanding. My wife had the wedge salad, and it was huge. Oh, my goodness, people! You need to eat at this establishment STAT! My husband and I ate lunch there upon arriving in North Charleston. The Philly Cheesesteak and homemade onion rings are to DIE for! The bread was so fresh, the beef was so tender, just the right amount of cheese and onions (not a fan of green peppers, so they left them off my sandwich. Now let's discuss the onion rings! 12/10. Homemade. The dipping sauce was fantastic. So delicious! We went back that very evening and ordered more onion rings to have with the remainder of our lunch sandwiches. The portion sizes are great. 1st It's a bar with food, NOT a restaurant with a bar, and that's OK...... I thought it was another location of a place we LOVED in Birmingham, but it doesn't appear to be. Atmosphere inside @2 on a Sunday felt a little like alumni weekend in college - older folks (25+) sipping on cocktails and talking. Limited tables, and not the cleanest place in the world (bathroom was gross) - it really did feel like a college bar..... Food: Order food at the bar, start a tab. (like I said, it's a bar with food, not the other way around) I was a little apprehensive - but it was EXCELLENT!!!! Wife loved the chicken sandwich, my Brunch Burger was out of this world, good fries, really good wings. Would we go back? The bartender I asked to serve me, refused me service and in addition to that, made rude comments to the people who were with me that were also trying to order. Decent local bar. I stopped by on Friday after a handful of people suggested checking it out, and I'm glad I did! It was clearly full of locals (almost the type of place where people stop and stare at you when you walk in) but everyone was friendly and welcoming. A guy at my side of the bar bought shots for friends of his at the other side, just as Tony was about to take my order. I said "I'd like to order a friend like that!" and Tony handed me a shot. That is service, people. I ordered the black bean burger which was a bit spicier than I had expected but quite enjoyable. I was not super excited by the tap offerings (two PBR taps, a Guiness, lots of non-local non-variety type) in a city where there is a brewery around every corner, but I found something that worked and stuck with it for the remainder of the Nova game. I don't know if this will be one of my regular spots, but I felt very welcome and would go back in a heartbeat. read more

Honestly I wasn't sure what to expect from The Southern. I mean, it's pretty nondescript, just tucked away in a strip mall with some of the typical neon bar signs you would find at any bar. But I heard through the grapevine that it was a great place to go. Some of my bartender friends frequent The Southern when they close out after their own shifts. And, of course, the reviews on Yelp were encouraging. So, I HAD to give it a shot. And I'm so (so, so so!) glad I did! We arrived around 9:30pm on a Friday night. Having already eaten dinner elsewhere, this visit was strictly for drinks. I am curious to check out the food on future visits, though. The entire vibe is laid back (t-shirt and jeans is fine, want to get dressed up? that works too!) and there was a buzz of energy from all the conversations and music happening all around. You could sense some longterm friendships among the people standing around enjoying their beers. Good stories and laughter was definitely happening among most in the crowd. Pros: Fun atmosphere Great live music Friendly patrons (its definitely a spot where locals hang out, but visitors or "new locals" won't feel out of place one bit.) Bar Games (shuffle board, pinball, foosball, oh my!) Cons: Had to wait for drinks (at times) People stand around the front entrance, where they have a few tables outside, to smoke cigarettes and the smoke filters back inside. Some tables and stools aren't affected, while others inside the bar will definitely get a whiff. I'm pretty sure we kept saying "how great is this place?!" and "I'm so excited we finally checked this out!" and "I can't wait to come back!" over and over and over again. So, its a definite win. Came here for a Meetup group with some friends for the first time. Note that The Southern Bar & Grill is different from Southerly's restaurant and The Southern grocery store. It is in the same shopping area across from Southerly's and The Southern store. That said, I thought the food was pretty good, standard bar fare. The service was also very good and we had a very nice waitress. We had the following to eat (5 is best, 1 worst) -Toasted ravioli stuffed with beef - 4 - light and crispy toasted ravioli served with marina -Pimento cheese fondue - 3 - I thought this was okay but the pita it was served with was limp and too thin to really dip. A crispier pita chip would have gone well with this. -Spinach dip with wonton chips - 3 - I liked the creativity of the wonton chips but the spinach dip was very mayonaissy -Potato skins - did not eat this one so can't rate it, but my friend was disappointed as the bacon was barely visible, and commented they were just potato skins with a ton of sour cream -Philly Cheese Steak - 5 - this was my favorite entree, very cheesy cheese steak served with fresh french fries read more

Great place to spend time and make new friends. The food IS wonderful, the staff is friendly and engaging. The atmosphere is pretty much laid back and it has a country feel which I find pretty interesting ( Being a City Gal from NJ). I actually got to sip wine out of a Mason Jar. I had to take pictures to brag to my friends and family back home. Overall, a very pleasant and Friendly place. The place is kind of a a weird layout, the music is way too loud for a conversation I feel like. I haven't gone there but only during the weekend and they don't have drink specials. A little expensive for just a regular little bar. I had a good time with my friends but we only stayed for two hours because it was a different crowd. The Grilled Cheesesteak is yummy!!! A must try! The music was off the chart rocking the house. Hans Wetzel and the Eighty Sixers. Absolutely gotta see these guys. Danced and rocked my flip flops off. Drinks were great and they are known for their Apple Pie Shots. Gotta have dessert!! Fun local bar with really nice people. Highly recommend you check it out. Outside seating outback and out front. Kiefer the chef also whips up an unbelievable Philly cheese steak... Last night was my first time going to the Southern. I met friends for drinks. We were able to get seats at the bar, and it wasn't too crowded when we got there. I started with wine, but then switched to a Cosmo. The bartender (whose name I can't remember) made one of the best Cosmos that I have ever had! It was strong, but not overwhelming. My friend had the grapefruit crush which she loved. It seems to be very popular. They were squeezing lots of grapefruits! I was starving so I ordered a Chicken Philly with fries. The Chicken Philly was delicious-loaded with cheese, chicken, onions, peppers and mushrooms. The fries were like shoestring fries, and were sooooo good! I would definitely go back for that again. It got crowded in there around 10, and the bar was packed-lots of people and loud music from the band. This is a great place to go for good drinks and good music. read more
