The venue was very clean. At 11:30 on a Saturday it was dead. I was one of four people when I visited. The bartenders were nice that took care of me. Everything went smoothly until about 12/12:15 when I was trying to check out and I could not get anyone to come over and get me my check. One of the bartenders stepped out for a bit and the other was talking to his wife at the end of the bar. I tried getting his attention multiple times when he walked by and continuously walked to her. (It was me and her at the bar.) I just wanted to leave. I ordered the buffalo fried shrimp that used to be good but was honestly awful. If I wasn't starving and in a time crunch I would have sent it back. Overall I think The Shelter is not what it used to be and I won't be going back. It used to be a fun spot with pretty decent bar food but it fell flat today. Which I possibly could have excused if it had been busy but it wasn't it was dead. We had reservations for eight here on a Friday night with friends we don't see frequently. Unfortunately it was really hard to talk to them because we were seated outside right under a loud speaker. I ordered the pulled pork plate which was advertised as a lb of meat and two sides. Great, I thought, I'll have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. Wrong. The platter had 1/3 lb meat at most. I got it with the smoky barbecue sauce and it was pretty good. Sweet potato fries and collards were very good. Just not the experience we had hoped for and definitely poor advertising. My meat was burnt and a lot of it was not chewable. She on the other hand made a bee line to the ladies room after the meal with cramps and diarrhea . The table we sat at had no finish and raw wood is not able to be sanitized. The floor facing the bar was dirty ,not sweeped even though it was mid day and very few customers. and the check...sales tax in mount pleasant is 9% with a 2% hospitality tax. (we had no alcohol..there fore no alcohol tax rate) This placed charged 15.5% sales tax.... There is no way i will ever come back; nor do i recommend anyone else to waste you money here... We were a large party in town for a family gathering so I was happy the Shelter said they would be able to seat 12 of us when I called ahead. Unfortunately just as we arrived the host inadvertently gave our table to another large group thinking it was us. This meant we did end up waiting a bit for a table, but glad it was only about 15 minutes - unfortunately this was out on their deck rather than inside and for whatever reason there was a really powerful and odious stench out there. Whenever the wind shifted it was pretty awful. It resulted in most of our table squeezing to one side of the table to get away from it. Food wise - we were mostly all really happy. Our table ordered an array of items and were impressed with almost all of it. For apps we had boiled peanuts, hush puppies, fried pickles and okra and wings. All of which were really good. For mains we had the brisket melt - just okay, the shrimp and grits - really good, bowl of bog - good but small, and many of us tried to order pulled pork but they were out of it :( Service was pretty slow going. It took a long time to get plates and silverware and napkins. Then drinks and refills and food came out but two of us waited at least 5 more minutes before food arrived. Overall I would suggest sitting inside for fear of the smells outside and I would say the food was good enough to outweigh the other issues we faced. read more

The service and food here have declined over the last few years. Most recently we went for happy hour and they told us the wings were no longer going to be included on the menu, so we probably won't be back again. My drink was served in a very wet glass, which I almost immediately spilled because the glass was so slippery. They offered to bring me a new one (without mentioning they would charge me for the second one, typically this would be complimentary if you're offering, rather than asking if I'd like to order a new one.) When I asked about it on the bill the server disappeared and didn't come back for more than 15 minutes, I had to ask someone else if I could pay because I didn't want to walk out without paying. The food is pretty mediocre and you can find better service in mount pleasant for the same price or better, and I got sick from the shrimp appetizer. Save yourself the time and money and go somewhere else. read more

Friendly staff and decent food. Went there for brunch. Disappointed you couldn't make same day reservations as we had a large group, but the staff made it work. My girlfriends and I went to @shelterkitchenandbar at Shem Creek to watch some football a couple of weeks ago. We got there early and had nice seats at the outside-ish bar with tons of tv's around us. We decided to split some appetizers along with some mimosas and beers. We got the Fried Pickles & Okra that was served with a chipotle ranch, it was very good, and I loved the extra saltiness of the pickles! We also got the Loaded Shelter Fries, topped with pork, bacon, chipotle ranch, scallions, Gouda, Jack, and Cheddar cheeses. However, we substituted tortilla chips instead of the French fries. It was really good, and I recommended that substitution if you are craving more of a nachos type dish. And it was also nice little added bonus to be able to earn some rewards points through the Charleston Sports Pub's Loyalty Club. read more

Isn't it funny how the backdrop of a place changes your view and review? I cannot tell what kind of place this was I only saw pictures of the food and menu. Based on that I thought it would be more formal than a sports bar. So I came in with higher expectations. Especially noticing it is in the Shem Creek area. But walking in noticing immediately it's a sports bar they already had cool points for a great looking food and just being a sports bar. Changes everything. So I guess they were already working with house money. Bartenders are pretty cool social enough. Soon as you sit down and send someone over. I had my son look through my Yelp and he narrowed down to three restaurants. So we picked this one. For his birthday. The food came pretty quick that's always good. We had the egg rolls with collard greens and pulled pork. My son had the pull pork sandwich she said it was pretty good. I had the seafood. It was pretty fresh. They will definitely get a bad review for me if they had great value seafood and right across the street from a fresh seafood place. But it passed the test. Flounder was very crispy and tender. Fry's work cold and hard. But my waiter noticed that bringing the plate to me and immediately asked that I want fresh fries drop. Super cool. Pretty good atmosphere you can tell everyone's irregular. I'm coming back for brunch. I would give three stars but when I asked myself when I come back I gave it one more. The brunch menu looks super good. read more

Spent an evening here while on vacay in Charleston. First time visit and it seems to be a local sports bar and restaurant type of place. We were immediately seated and drink orders taken. Forgive me, but I don't recall the appetizers we ordered and I failed miserably on taking pictures of which I took none. I do remember that I ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT which I thought was pretty tasty. It consisted of Pimento cheese, bacon, green leaf lettuce, red pepper remoulade, fried green tomato, and avocado on Texas toast. If memory serves, no complaints from anyone in our large party of 14 that I recall. To top it off, it was trivia night which made for a fun way to spend time together as well. This is one of my favorite go-to spots. Their breakfast is great. I love the standard and their grits are delicious. You can get carafes of mimosa as well during brunch for a great price. Inside and outside seating, dog friendly, porch seating and a nice bar. It can get busy so on a Sunday brunch or nice day make a reservation ahead of time. At night they have live music occasionally too. Parking can be annoying. Street is available to pay in the area. They have a very small lot too but I've never been lucky enough to snag a spot. read more

The food isn't good l, and we were actually scared to eat it once we sat down and looked around. If the restaurant is this filthy, what does the kitchen look like? I try to find positives when I have to leave a bad review, but there were no takeaways that could actually shift my decision the slightest. Servers standing around when they should have a rag and some bleach cleaning this place! Paper bracelets from what apparently is the night crowd all over the outside of this place also (noticed on the way out since I wasn't paying attention on the way in). I actually made myself sick when we got back to the hotel bc I was scared I would be sick otherwise. The best thing this place could do is SHUT DOWN! Service | Potatoes | Game Day Service: Probably the worst opening service I've ever had at a restaurant. From the initial hostess to the second hostess to the waiter, the entire service from the workers was quite poor. 1) First, the initial hostess. To give context, I arrived at 12:15 with my girlfriend and asked to be seated and informed the hostess we are two of four. She asked when would the other two be arriving and I said, in 20-30 minutes. The waitress said, "you two cannot be seated because we are too busy." I asked why? and the restaurant is too full to seat you two and we have your entire party present to seat you all. I pointed out the variety of seats that were open and she said: "that doesn't matter you cannot be seated until all four of you are here." The amount of anger and defiance from her voice made it seem like it was something other than the fact that the other two in our party was not present. Maybe it is the fact that my girlfriend and I are an interracial couple? 2) Second, the second hostess. After going to get a drink at the bar we waited 15-20 minutes and the other two people arrived. At this point, the restaurant was 65-70% full. With multiple tables inside and outside and according to the "no-wait app" they were on a 5-minute wait. When we got to the hostess stand and said we had everyone they told us they were on a 20-30 minute wait. And she told us we could be on the list if we wanted. Again I politely pointed out that there were multple talbes of four that were open inside and outside. She said, "sorry sir, we are on a wait." Again, the tone and attitude made me think the fact that we were two interracial couples had something to do with the "wait time." After putting myself on the "no-wait app" I was able to shorten their "20-30 minutes" to 8 minutes. 3) Our sever while nice and attentive in person, was often forgetful. Every request: Drinks, mimosas, bbq sauce, waters needed two request for them to come out. While he was busy covering many tables on the patio, this became extremely frustrating. - if the food and prices were so good. This would be 1 star based on the service experience. Potatoes: I had the Fried Chicken Biscuits with potatoes. The Potatoes were top 3 all-time. They are cut extremely fine and have a variety of spices and peppers which make the flavor pop in your mouth. The Frid Chicken biscuits were delicious as well. I had the BBQ Mustard sauce which definitely gave it a lot of flavor you cannot get where I'm living in Chicago. Game Day: The set up is perfect for any College Football Saturday or Pro Football Sunday. They have a ton of TVs with live music going, with games like corn hole and pool to pass the time. It can get a bit loud, so it is not the greatest place to have a conversation AND watch the game. But, if the game is primary, this is your place. Pro Tip: Download the no-wait app. It definitely saves you time and "negative energy" from the hostesses. read more

The Shelter is located in a prime location in the heart of the Shem Creek restaurant scene. No marsh or water views, but easy walking distance to other bars that do. While prices are pretty reasonable, portions are surprisingly skimpy and service is indifferent. We last went on a Wednesday night and found a sparsely populated dining room and patio. After being brusquely shown to our table, it took a good 10 minutes to order drinks and dinner. I ordered the grilled grouper dinner with collards and something called "Bog" (seasoned rice with sausage and chicken--it was ok). The grouper that arrived was the puniest fillet I've ever seen--I laughed because it was hidden behind the sides and I missed it at first (see photo). Unfortunate, because the micro-fish was seasoned and cooked well. Other restaurants serve portions two to three times as large, so they must be trying to cut costs here. At $22, it's a rip off. The Smash Burger fared better. Again, on the smallish size, but tasty and with serviceable fries. In summary, I probably won't be returning here unless they start serving proper adult sized portions and at least pretend to care. Again, service was indifferent at best. The Shelter is a cute little spot in Mount Pleasant right near Shem Creek. I've been to the Shelter a few times now, once for brunch and once for dinner. They have an indoor area with a pool table as well as outdoor seating on the patio. Cornhole can also be played on the grass out front. I came here for dinner around 5:30 on a Friday with a group of 3. Now, the first thing I have to say is that parking is a struggle. The restaurant itself only has a small lot on the side which fits a handful of cars. If you don't fit there, you're left driving the side streets to find street parking. I eventually parked in a gravel lot a few blocks away which seemed to serve as overflow parking for quite a few places in the vicinity. My group was seated near the pool table inside, and we ordered some fried pickles and okra as an appetizer. This was a very tasty dish! The fry was good, and the sauce was tasty for dipping as well. I ordered the early bird burger which came with a fried egg and bacon on an English muffin as the bun. This burger was tasty, but the English muffin made it a bit harder to cut through and bite through than a normal bun. But I will say that the fries were very good. With the Friday rush, however, I found that our table was a bit neglected and after waiting a good while for our checks we did have to find our waitress to get things all done and wrapped up. I think going on here on a less busy time of day or day or the week would help to solve this problem. Overall, I think that the food was pretty tasty at Shelter, but how slammed it was and the difficulty with parking makes it personally very hard to justify visiting. They are currently building a new parking deck near Shem Creek though, so perhaps in the future I will visit again. read more

Total disappointment. We have been to Shelter a number of times, but it's been at least two years. The restaurant was dirty. I don't remember it being that way before. Our service was so slow. We watched three times as beers we ordered sat on the bar for at least six minutes. It was even that crowded. Our appetizers were okay. Our chicken tenders however were somehow overdone and barely luke warm. Oh Shelter also claims that their fries are hand cut fresh fries. The server confirmed this but they were clearly frozen. Paying was a nightmare. Both checks were wrong. Our dirty plates were never bussed so we just stacked them up on the far end of the table. Oh also, the draft beer wasn't working. Ugh. But we were there for trivia so we could overlook some of the disappointing things because we were there to have fun. To be clear, our visiting friends wanted to do a trivia night, so after verifying that Shelter had Team Trivia both on the website and with a phone call we went. Turns out they do some stupid Name that Tune trivia NOT Team Trivia (which by the way is a company name and exactly as Shelter puts it on their website so why would we think differently). It was an utter disappointment. I apologized all night to our guests. Anyway, Shelter used to be decent. Now it is not. But if you want a $16 bad burger or $15 luke warm chicken fingers, then this place is for you! read more

This is basically a local sports bar - TVs and neon beer signs - with a strong post-college vibe. Plenty of shots and burgers were in effect. All said, folks were friendly and the beer was cold. I really like shelter for the ambiance , live music and bar vibes. I always have a good time drinking mimosas in the patio so I am a regular Sunday visitor Drinks and bar: on point! Food: it's good but not perfect. Every time I come my food is good enough but not memorable. Example: for the steak huevos rancheros The eggs were cooked nicely But they were topped with a pico the gallo which was too watery and mushy and kind of ruined the dish for me. I will probably ask for the pico on the side next time. My one suggestion would be avoid styrofoam. They jumped into the eco friendly craze by banning straws but they still use styrofoam for takeaway. Maybe try the compostable cardboard boxes in the future? read more

Last night, my family come here for dinner. The food was incredible! I loved the seasoning on my Peel n Eat Shrimp! There were 12-14 shrimp in the bowl, and it was the perfect amount. My mom got the Seafood Boil, and her corn & sausage in it were amazing! Everything was priced very reasonable!
