I have a great story to tell. 30 years ago, when I was 27, Memoir Tattoo owner Kim Saigh did both my forearms when we both lived in Chicago. Let me start off by saying that I didn't know what to expect when I first started exploring for tattoo artists in Los Angeles. Tattoo shops are a dime a dozen and finding one that puts emphasize on perfecting each tattoo and customer service is even harder. So, when I came across Kim Saigh's work on Instagram there was no doubt that I found the tattoo artist for me. Her work is so incredibly realistic. She never fails to miss any details or produce crisp line work. When I reached out to Kim she was extremely prompt and answered all of my questions thoroughly. As the date got closer to my tattoo she sent me a picture of the mock up and got feedback on any further changes needed. Additionally, Kim reassured me that the shop was adhering to CDC and county guidelines in terms of COVID protocol. The day of my tattoo I was a ball of emotions. When I entered the shop a sense of ease rushed over me. Probably because Kim was so calm and understanding. Kim walked me through the process of getting the tattoo before starting which helped me know what to exactly anticipate. The tattooing process was done so meticulous. And, it was awesome to find out (and see) Shawn's portrait of Rick Walters, the old man who tattooed my arm opposite side of Kim's design. Kim paints too, her artwork was also displayed. Kim had a lot of input going into the decoration of this studio. I love it. Yes, appointment only, so just log onto the website and try to schedule your way through. If you want Kim or Shawn to work on you, you're going to have to schedule your appointment 2 months in advance or so, which I was willing to do and did. The studio is clean, her station is clean, and the atmosphere itself was inviting. I love the design, and we're not even done yet! Artist that did my piece - Christina Ramos I had an overall good experience at this place. I got my back done watching Zombieland. They always have bomb music playing in the background too. The studio is pristine. The art hanging makes it cozy and gives it a welcoming vibe I think. It was my first tattoo, and I have issues with passing out with shots in general (needle phobia lol) so she started off slowly and worked her way up with it. She kept checking in with me to make sure I was okay and/or needed a break. Originally, I was going to go somewhere else but before going I just googled top female tattoo artist in LA and she popped up. It takes a while to get booked but it was worth the wait. I had requested an appointment with Adrian during the pandemic upon the passing of my brother to inquire about having his portrait tattooed on me. Adrian was in contact within a few days and I sent some pictures to him via email. He said he was willing to do it, I left a tiny deposit and we were scheduled....Well, Pandemic and a half later and we were finally able to have minor restrictions lifted to get this tattoo done about ten days ago. All I can say is I will post photos once it's completely healed but it's exactly why I flew to LA from Boston. You find someone who matches what you're looking for, pays attention to every little detail, then slam dunks your thoughts. During the end of the tattoo, I felt like Adrian knew my brother better than me as he filled in details I never would have known. On to the Memoir Tattoo Shop/Gallery. Memoir entrance is located off a side street where you are buzzed in to approach what we in Boston would consider a "museum". We were greeted by Kim Saigh and Shawn Barber who were working on customers stories/tattoos. Sat on a couch awaiting Adrian and looked around studio to see all these paintings that were just gorgeous. Of course Shawn Barber painted them, is this a joke I ask myself? He should see my mean stick figures.....The talent amongst this group is completely insane but it's not just the talent, it was the people. You look at people as though they are stars or celebrity types when the reality is they are great people also. It was a really comfortable experience for an emotional tattoo and that comforting feeling made everything much easier. This tattoo would not have happened if I couldn't get to Adrian, there wasn't another choice. Choose one of Memoirs artists if you want to be comfortable, treated like a human, and have a sick tattoo at the end. Awesome experience and I hope to work with them again in the near future. Added an extra half hour to my bill after not honoring their price quote. Shady as hell

Just finished up my last session for a half sleeve with Kim yesterday and I honestly can't speak any more highly of her, Shawn, and Nate. I initially emailed her on a whim, knowing how busy she was and not really expecting to hear anything back from her (or her assistant) so it was to my utter surprise that I received a response from her not three days later, saying she was interested in doing the piece I had in mind. Kim was indeed very busy but I went in for a quick consult and left with a wait of a little less than a month for my first session; all without having to put down a deposit (Kim was very trustworthy which is something that I thought was just amazing). Once in the shop, I was immediately put at ease by everyone's genuine kindness and the no-bullshit attitude they all share, which put me at ease with it being my first large piece (On one of my longer sessions, Nate (also an amazing tattoo artist) even offered to bring me coffee/snacks when he was leaving for a break). Tattoos are by appointment only so you don't have a bunch of people coming in and out all day and they don't allow you to bring an entourage when you're getting tattooed, so the studio has a very personal and private feel to it, even if 2 or 3 other people are getting tattooed at the same time. Despite giving Kim complete artistic freedom with my basic design in mind, she always made it a point to check if I was cool with what she was doing and if I wanted to change anything. She also made sure to ask me how I was doing every hour or so, giving me an easy out to wimp out for the day without feeling too foolish or embarrassed to ask. The shop itself is a work of art--both Kim and Shawn are supremely talented artists and their art adorns every wall of the studio, giving you something pretty to look at while you're jabbed with needles for hours on end. On a side note, my final color session wasn't slated til mid March but something came up which involved me leaving LA for a while, unsure of when I would be back--I texted Kim letting her know about my situation and she shifted her busy-as-hell schedule around to fit me in as soon as she could, just so I could leave with a finished piece. I really can't sing her praises enough--both as an person and artist. In short, the shop and artists made this experience better than anything I could've ever dreamed of. Kim and Shawn are class acts and if you have the privilege of being tattooed by either of them, DO IT. read more

My son recently died, and I wanted a tattoo in his honor. I live in out of state. I reached out to Christina Ramos based on her gallery and reputation, and said that I would be in LA for two days. Here is what happened: I was given an appointment for May 2nd. I asked if I could email some ideas, and was told that would be helpful. I emailed images that I liked and wrote a description. The appointment was canceled shortly before my trip. Christina then had a cancelation and I was offered that time. I rescheduled other plans to make it work. I showed up for my appointment. Christina was working on a tattoo. She ignored me. I didn't want to interrupt and sat awkwardly on the couch unsure what to do. Another artist came in and was perfectly friendly, so at least it's not a systemic problem at Memoir. Eventually, Christina took me into a consult room. I showed her a tattoo I liked and she told me it wouldn't work. She said it would fade quickly and look messy. She didn't suggest any changes, or try to find another approach, but ok, fine. I showed her the idea I had emailed her, which she had never opened. It's a grandfather clock that's been in my family. Christina said, "That is not a tattoo." She offered no other explanation. Umm...OK. We talked for another five minutes or so. She was dismissive and not clear about her objections to my ideas. For example, she said that a detailed tattoo needed to be big in order to last. I said big wasn't a problem for me. She had no answer. I had the distinct feeling that she just didn't want to give me a tattoo. Maybe she didn't like me, I'm not sure. Our entire interaction lasted about 10 minutes. I felt that she wanted me to leave. Christina Ramos is good at what she does, but so are a lot of other artists. If you want to get a tattoo from her, I would suggest you go in knowing that there might be some issues. In retrospect, I wish I had not canceled my other plans in order to meet with her. It was a waste of my time. Update: I received this email from Christina today. Not only is it dismissive and condescending in exactly the same way that she was in person, it's also untrue. She didn't "explain how tattoos age." She just said, "this will age badly and look like a mess." And when I showed her another idea I had for a clock, she said, "this is not a tattoo" with no explanation. I am sad that you had such a bad experience on your consultation as to purposely write about it on yelp to damage my reputation and Memoir tattoo's I was just honest with you. Maybe other artists will do what you want and just take your money without explaining you how tattoos age. Or maybe I just care too much about the work I put out there as to give myself the right to refuse to do an idea I don't believe in. I think any business has that right. I did give you the option to come back with more ideas and gave you my personal number. Honestly what you showed me during the consultation had little to do with the reference you sent in the email anyway. I strongly believe everything that I said. it sucks that you have to be so bitter about it because it wasn't what you wanted to hear. Let me also remind you that I didn't charge you for my time and even though to your perception it was 10 min it was more like 15. It's my time too. I also pay my assistant to cater to people like you which it's also her time. Im sorry for your loss, I am sure you went through a lot and maybe you are taking it on us, I don't know. I don't think that justifies it. Best of luck to you. I'm not gonna be bitter about it but at least you need to hear that I stand for everything that I say. Memoir Tattoo is such a relaxing place to have ink done. It really feels like an art gallery as you get to admire the paintings done by Shawn Barber and Kim Saigh. Kim and Shawn are both very friendly and chill. As it is clearly stated on the Memoir website booking is done two to three months out. I sent my email request to the shop's email and to Kim's email and waited patiently. I waited eagerly the two months and finally got my appointment. In December 2010, Kim started working on an upper back piece, it will take multiple sessions and scheduling these sessions directly with Kim have been no problem. As much as I would love to give a great review, my experience was somewhat of a struggle with Memoir. It was very difficult getting an appointment set up with Kim and getting in touch with her assistant. I sent an email via her website and emailed directly. It took about a week or two to hear back. Kim's personal assistant emailed and left me a voicemail on my cell so I called back several times and left messages as well as email but never received a call back for a number of days. I was very eager so I continued to call until I got an actual person on the line. When I finally got someone on the line, I was able to set up my appointments. Unfortunately, a family emergency came up and I had to cancel indefinitely. I asked if I could get my deposit back and her assistant said she would find out if I could since it was "non refundable" (didn't see that posted anywhere on her site, nor was I told). I still haven't heard back about it. As far as I can tell Kim is a great artist and seems very nice. I was very much looking forward to getting something done by her. I realize she is very popular and in high demand. I have no problem waiting but the process does need to improve. read more

I followed my tattoo artist, Christina Ramos, here. She's PHENOMENAL and I will not ever go to anyone else. It's so serious that I won't even let someone else write a phone number on my hand with a Sharpie, because my skin has been inked by an angel and having someone else place a scribble on it would be a crime. Anyhoo - I love the feel of this parlor. It's beautifully decorated (those paintings and the furniture!), clean and all the artists are friendly and talented. I think it's appointment only here because you don't get folks wandering off the street and being lookey-loos, which I think is cool, and the atmosphere is just overall pleasant. I suppose parking could get a bit dodgy depending on when you go, but I've been fortunate enough to always find something pretty close on the street...but I wouldn't care if I had to walk 10 miles, jump through flaming hoops and do a dance routine with Alvin in the Chipmunks to get to there...I'd do it in stride because Christina is a beast. I have sent an appointment request 4 month ago, hoping that I would get Kim to do my second tattoo, for which I saved up for months before finally send out my email. However, I have never heard anything back from her (or most likely her assistant), NEVER. I understand that she must be busy because of her reputation, but I've been in contact with tattoo artists as popular as her, or maybe even more, and they all contacted me in a way promptly manner. If love meant being repeatedly stabbed with tiny needles, Kim Saigh would be my soulmate. Everything about my recent experience getting tattooed by Kim was perfect. I stumbled across Memoir Tattoo while searching for an artist who specialized in fine, detailed black and grey work, and was stuck by Kim's work. When I emailed her with my idea, I expected I'd be waiting a while for a reply and weeks, if not months, for an appointment. I was thrilled when she responded the following day and enthusiastically offered to do the work that same week. Normally, Kim is booked months in advance, so I know the speed of her response and the same-week appointment were thanks in part to cancelations. But even given the sudden opening in her schedule, I think it was Kim's personal excitement about my tattoo idea that led her to get back to me so quickly. That she was actually interested in and excited about doing my work is testament to her passion and integrity as an artist. It took me years to decide the subject and artist for my tattoo. I was familiar with Kim's work from the show, but I was also impressed with everything she did besides the show as well. I wanted somebody that does color well, so naturally, she was my first choice. So, willing to wait forever, I took a chance and emailed Kim about my tattoo. I heard from her about 3 days later! I was so shocked. We scheduled (and rescheduled a couple of times) a consult, which was mildly frustrating, but in the end it didn't bother me because I just knew it was going to be worth waiting for. I brought in ideas, and emphasized what I wanted, and she was a good listener. Also, she has been tattooing for a while so she was obviously very familiar with the subject I chose. I had to wait a couple of more months to get the tattoo, but that was fine with me. She confirmed our appt. a few days before and shared her sketch. I gave my input, wanted to change a few things; again, she was a good listener. I was so excited the day of. Her sketch was gorgeous, and on top of that, she was able to cover a small tattoo I previously had. The shop is clean, everybody is professional and straight about what to expect. The tattoo took six hours and she was so awesome about breaks and let me know that it was ok to tap out if I needed to. I survived, but the last couple of hours were rough.
