Martina Major at Dark Horse Tattoo is a single tattoo away from being responsible for more than half my tattoos (I have seven; she's done three of them and they've all turned out dope as hell). I should probably make her a little punch card and plan to get her some kind of gift for if we ever hit ten which honestly seems fairly likely at this point, I can't stop going back to her. The space: Perfect, cozy, a little deranged in the exact right way, actually really home-y (I mean I guess that's dependent on your home, my home has a lot of fake taxidermy in it), absolute chef's kiss, 10/10 would straight up move in and live there. Comfortable waiting area, squeaky clean, everyone is friendly, individual stations feel both private and also like, collegial, great location, easy parking + walking distance from a ton of stuff. Martina: Wildly talented and really fun to work with. Her own artwork is gorgeous -- check it out on her personal website and see if it's your style -- and she's great at taking on outside ideas and images, helping you figure out the perfect placement, tweak an existing design, whatever you need. Throughout the actual tattooing part she's that perfect balance of quiet/focused & super interesting/funny/easy to talk to. All three of my tattoos by her healed quickly and beautifully. And finally, T H E M U S I C at Dark Horse: Literal psychic bliss. I don't know how they do it but every time I've gotten a tattoo there they've had different playlists on, each of which has just absolutely nailed either the mood I'm in or the mood I wanted to be in. One of the best tattoo shops and experiences I've ever had! My dad and I made appointments with Darkhorse to get tattoos when we stopped in LA while on a California road trip. The appointment process and communication was simple and friendly. Shop was clean, well decorated and had a really cool vibe. I had specifically requested Martina for my tattoo and my dad worked with Candi. Speaking on my tattoo, Martina was AMAZING! Her style and ability to transfer your ideas into her style truly wowed me. Candi did an equally awesome job on my dads tattoos as well. His ideas and her artistic style matched perfectly. I got my brows done here by Shannon, and I'm so happy with the result! The environment is super clean and had a really great vibe. Shannon is incredibly nurturing and was willing to answer all of my seemingly ridiculous questions ! I felt super safe and like she understood exactly what i wanted. As much as I would hate for my favorite tattoo artist to be booked making it harder to get an appointment..... I HAVE to rave about Adam Warmerdam! Aside from fantastic artistry, Adam is sweet, gentle and patient (especially with my uncontrollable twitching while getting my stomach tattooed). This is a review for Candi Kinyobi. I'd heard about a lot about Candi through friends who've gotten tattoos from her up in San Francisco at Tuesday Tattoo. I was just visiting LA and stopped into Dark Horse for a walk-in and was soooo stoked to see that she was working. This was my 3rd tattoo - 3 different shops - and this was BY FAR the best experience I've ever had. Candi is so warm and friendly it kind of catches you off guard. While my tattoo was simple, she was still incredibly accommodating - making sure the size and placement was right, willing to make tweaks because she seems to genuinely care that you get exactly what you want. And getting the tattoo was a breeze because the conversation was so easy. Maybe this is a testament to both Candi and Dark Horse as a shop, I just felt like I was hanging at a friend's house. Even if you're not trying to get a tattoo, you should stop in and check out her merch and the other artists' merchandise. They let you turn in the deposit over the phone using a card or in person. I went in person and made my deposit in cash so I could check out the space. I came here about 5 years ago. I didn't write a review then, but as I'm looking for another tattoo parlor to fix the mistake that was made here, this listing shows up. I came in to get a simple black ink wedding band tattoo. It was flat, filled, again simple. I took really good care of it, used the black cat stuff. But it just didn't look even. When it pealed it was horrible. I should have know when the guy free handed and had no real direction. I don't know if that guy works there anymore. I would hope not. Bryan was easy to work with and answered every call/email/text as I set up the appointment and we figured out the design. He was friendly and polite, but his skill really speaks for itself. Just got my first tattoo here, literally 2 hours ago, and am so excited that I couldn't wait to review it. Candi Kinyobi--see her! not just for her work, but her positivity, warmness and professionalism. She made my first tattoo experience calming and enjoyable! I was originally going to see Martina, based on the recent 2 or 3 glowing reviews about her. I wanted to see Bryan who seems like the main guy, but he was not available today and I wanted to get a last minute thing done as a birthday present for my cousin. So since Martina had some positive reviews, I decided to go with her. Thank God it didn't happen. From the get-go she seemed uninterested, apathetic, unfriendly, and unwelcoming; as though I had burdened her with my presence. She drew up a sample which wasn't what I wanted, and then told me she wouldn't have time to do my tattoo because she had plans to go out with her friends, although I had already stressed to her the importance of getting the tattoo done today. Mind you it was about a 30 minute tattoo, and I was there by 7pm, 2 hours before closing. She didn't explain the particular urgency about going out with her friends, or why it was so urgent that she absolutely couldn't be a few minutes late so she could accommodate a new customer. She looked like she was in her 20s, and had this petulant, childish vibe that was really disgusting and unattractive. Anyways, I don't want to dwell on the negative, because Candi was everything Martina wasn't. I would go back to Candi any day. She was thoughtful in explaining the process, patient, accommodating, and friendly. She even stayed a little past closing time to finish with me, even though she had a friend visiting from out of town who was waiting for her (unlike another person, ahem...).
