I really enjoyed the appetizers at MeNamie. We opted for the corn kakiage and the fried shrimp. Both were delicious, crunchy, flavourful with some interesting sauces. For the udon, we opted for the spicy seafood udon and the tempura udon. Both dishes were good and flavourful. My only critique of the spicy udon was that the sauce was a bit runny. The dish would have been a lot better if the sauce was thickened so there is an opportunity for the udon to stick to the sauce a bit better. Because it was super runny, it was almost like a 'noodle soup' but a spoon wasn't provided so it was hard to really taste the flavour. The tempura udon was good as well, tasting very typical of a dashi broth you would find at japanese udon places. The service was okay - you really had to flag the servers down to get their attention. This has been on my hit list for a while now, so took advantage of the being in the area on the weekend to try it out. Dining on the weekend is 90min, but that was plenty of time for us. We had the chicken karage, the cheese oven baked udon and the tonkatsu. Each dish was well made and delivered on the expectations we had for the place. The chicken karage was a table favorite. Each was the size of a golf ball, crunchy and textured on the outside while being juicy and tender on the inside. I liked my oven baked udon as it was creamy, cheesy and had large pieces of shrimp. I've visited this restaurant a number of times over the many years that it has been around, and it has never disappointed. Whether I've come alone, with one other person, or in a small or big group, MeNami has always been a great restaurant with good food and solid service. My personal favourite is any and all of the udon dishes. The patio is nice to eat at in the summer, and the interior is well-decorated as well if you prefer dining indoors. The first time I had mentaiko udon was in Vietnam at a little Japanese restaurant that served it as an appetizer. It was so delicious that we ordered more to make it our main course, and the creaminess and taste of the mentaiko (fish roe) has stayed with me as a food goal to repeat. But it hasn't been easy to fulfill this goal since so few places offer it. I have been to Japanese restaurants during trips around the US, NYC and CA, in Guam on business, and in Europe... and you can always find udon in soup broth or fried, but the mentaiko cream sauce is rare. And so it was the memory of that first-time experience, coupled with a several-years-long search to find it again, that finally led us to MeNami, which advertises it on their menu among the other udon dishes. And though my expectations were high, I was not disappointed!! The mentaiko itself is tiny fish eggs in a blob that is added on top of the udon, which are bathed in a silky, savory, thick cream sauce. It's garnished with thinly sliced green onions, and you mix it all together and then eat it. The taste is not at all 'fishy,' but instead has incredible umami and a wonderful mouth feel between the chewy udon noodles and the velvety cream sauce. I was really happy with this dish, and now that I've found it I will be back! For the rest of this review, an explanation why only 4 stars, when obviously my food goal was met in a truly satisfying way.... On the night we arrived, MeNami was busy (as I gather they always are), but they do not allow reservations for groups under 4. So if you are alone or a couple, you have to take your chances and show up, get on the wait list and be patient. We arrived around 7:40 pm, were told the wait was an hour, but within 20 min we were called and got a table. Not bad, but the no reservations thing for singles or couples is a pain. Also, the night we arrived they were doing maintenance on their bar (on a Sat night during dinner service?!) and so they had beer, wine and saki, but no cocktails. Normally, not such a big deal, but we had read several reviews about the amazing, inventive and unique cocktails here, and were excited for this capper on our dining experience....but no. Anyway, loved the mentaiko udon, will definitely return, and definitely recommend the food! read more

The food was pretty good! We enjoyed the chicken karaage and the oven baked udon, but not the seafood yaki udon. The seafood yaki udon had a lot of dried bonito flakes which overpowered the entire dish. The dish was also warm and not hot when it was served. So sad because I was really looking forward to that dish. Our other two dishes were fresh and served hot though. I'd like to come back and try their other udon dishes. I tried their mentaiko cream udon as takeout a few months back and really enjoyed it! They have a really cute and cozy patio with a heater. MeNami was crazy busy during their winterlicious promo but they accomodated our group even without reservations which we really appreciated. The prix fix menu was a steal, at $25 for a 3 course meal. I got the tuna tataki which was to die for with their house made ponzu sauce, the cheesy udon which surprisingly light for a creamy dish, and the blueberry creme brulee. The owner was super sweet and came by to explain each dish and apologized for being too busy which I find crazy because they were handling the rush so well imo. She even made our friend visiting from the US feel welcome by asking about his stay and telling him that he shoud come back whenever he's back in town. The delicious food combined with the attentive service is a guarantee for us to come back! read more

One of the best dining experiences I have had in a while. MeNami's menu is filled with the classic udon choices, along with some fun and creative adaptions. We ordered the Okonomiyaki pancake, Potato Cream Udon, and the Curry Rice with Pork Cutlet. I LOVED the Potato Cream Udon, I was beyond words. The cream on top was surprisingly light and so delicious! It was truly an unforgettable menu item. In terms of service, I honestly don't even expect much from these hip Korean bars. I had 2 servers. The girls was fine, smiled and even thanked us after we paid. Then there was the guy, who gave off the impression that he didn't wanna work in the service industry and couldn't be bothered with this crap. It felt is if we were a huge inconvenience to him because we're eating there. I spotted his name tag said Minato(?), but he spoke Korean with the other staff. So Minato, why the crappy attitude? Service aside, the food was decent. I liked the spicy seafood udon sauce more than the cheese bake. Former was a nice fragrant blend of spicy and creamy. I was recommended to try the udon noodles here as they had a unique menu centered around udon along with the other Japanese dishes. We made a reservation as it is a popular place and were going around dinner time. Upon arriving, there were not many people, but by the time we finished eating, there was a steady stream of patrons entering. Looking at their menu, I really would have liked to order a cream udon or baked udon. However, I was quite full from a previous meal so I opted for something much lighter and added karaage to be shared. The udon was ok and there was a lot of veggies in the soup so I had my portion of veggies for the day and the karaage was nice and crispy. I've been to MeNami years ago and decided to go recently with some friends. Lots of large parties were celebrating birthdays during the time I went. The server was super nice, but the host was a bit rude. (**will let you know at the end of review why that was**) My friends ordered their signature udon noodles, which they enjoyed. I opted for the Tonkatsu pork. The wonderful thing about this dish was the fact that it was the largest portioned dish and the cheapest. It came with two tonkatsu pork chops, salad, rice and a side of udon. A couple of things I did enjoy about the dish were the pork chops. However, the rice was legit hard (**like leftover rice**) and the udon was way too chewy. Overall, the reason why I did not order the udon dish to begin with was the fact that most were covered with a thick cream sauce/cheese. And ya girl can't have cheese. :( So what caused the drop in ratings? When our bills came there was an 18% charge on top. Finally gave MeNami a try after always going past it so many times in the Yonge/Finch area! Ambiance is good for smaller, more intimate group settings. Food was really good. Yam salad was really generous and the curry udon with the pork cutlets was done really well. Service could've been better. The server that I had actually said "but you already have a napkin" after she spilled sauce all over my table and second napkin when I asked for another napkin. I personally like to have at least one extra napkin with me since one napkin isn't enough. I have never been questioned for requesting an extra napkin before so I responded that I like to have an extra just in case. That was when she gave me the extra napkin. Anyway. Minor but odd incident but that experience just rubbed me the wrong way. Overall, not a bad place to go to. The food is quite generous and good there. ft. Tsuke Udon with Tempura. This is a cold udon dipped in a light, sweet soy sauce with ginger, daikon and ground sesame but they have a soup version of it as well. MeNami's noodles are made fresh using a proprietary blend of flours (soft, medium, gluten) and water. They're rolled and cut using an udon-making machine imported from Japan. The tempura udon came out fresh and the battered shrimp was nice and crisp. For the price, it was disappointing due to the portion and lack of tempura. There were only two pieces: one shrimp tempura and one pumpkin tempura and both were on the bland side. The noodles were good but not remarkably so- very similar to the ones you can find at your local grocery store but a bit chewier. Similar to its Korean sister-bar, Han Ba Tang, MeNami's snack and bar menu caters to the area's late-night crowd. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy, rustic and modern. Second visit since last year, was going to try their famous potato whip udon but they told me that it is not available for now, I ordered curry udon with tempura and also corn kakiage, the waitress is extremely friendly and provides very good service. The curry udon comes with 2 shrimp tempura and a piece of yam tempura, I don't like the breading choice but it is indeed crispy. The curry has a fish-like taste which is pretty disappointing because I don't like seafood, the portion is very reasonable and overall it's not bad. The corn kakiage is as usual very good, I love corn and I love sweet mayo, it's a good combination. But it is indeed pretty heavy so it's more meant for being shared among a group of people. They also installed the dividers between each table, which I think it's pretty considerate, I enjoyed eating here and I'm gonna come back when they have potato whip udon. read more

I've seen alot of photos of this place on social media which drew me in, though the reviews were pretty short and not descriptive, we decided to give it a try. Corn kakiage: There was way too much batter, and the balls fell a part too easily (@imanishijapanesekitchen does a WAY better job at this dish) Taco Wasa: I'm assuming they didn't add the "bi" because it wasn't spicy at all which was disappointing, I enjoy the little "kick" from the wasabi usually Okonomiyaki: This had the right ingredients, however the pancake was far too thick (@okonomihouse specializes in these and they're ) Chicken Kara-age: The batter was too thick once again, the chicken pieces were too big and didn't have any flavor. Additionally, when we called ahead of time, they said there would be an autograt of 18% if we made a reservation. We agreed, but when we arrived it was half empty, yet they still charged the 18%. Restaurants usually autograt if they're serving a large party. But they decided to add on this "fee" for what? For the inconvenience of putting a reserved sign up? We generally would have tipped 18% based on service but for it to be mandatory just left a bad taste in our mouths. I'm just surprised at how many posts I've seen of this place. For being by Yonge/Finch there's SO MANY other options of actually tasty food, I would rather a $10 bowl of Gamjatang than any of their items tbh. Because of my food sensitivities I can't eat much here. What I was able to try I thought the food was okay but nothing special. The decor of the place is cool & all that but it's not enough to make me want to come back here to eat. During the dinner I had here with my friend I felt some cold air at my back & turns out they had opened the back door to receive their grocery delivery. Plus someone was outside smoking a cigarette so that odour (which I hate) was coming into the restaurant. I asked if they could close the door & shortly thereafter they did. The waitstaff here were okay. There was only two ladies who were working as servers. You can see part of the kitchen near the back & the cooks. The dishes we tried were the krokke (potato patty), chicken karage (deep fried chicken), pork belly, & deep fried corn niblets. The only dishes I thought were good was the krokke & pork belly. I love this restaurant so much. Their salmon sashimi was cold and fresh, it melted in my mouth it was amazing. Tired their potato curry udon back when it was hype. At the time, it was very delicious and I've always wanted to go back. However, when I came back to try it this time, the noodles weren't as bouncy and the whole dish just felt heavy. I went to Menami during stage 2 of Ontario's reopening. So there was no reservations and only patio seating. There was a wait list. I would suggest going early to add your name to the list, walk around, and they will text you when your seat is available. I'm not sure how useful this tip is given we're currently in stage 3. Good and attentive service from the servers and host. The food was good. I ordered the salmon cream udon. The salmon was over cooked, my partner ordered the tempanyaki udon and it was very sweet and flavourful. We also ordered the premium flight of sake and octopus wrap. The yuzu sake my favourite. I have heard of this place from my friends for a while and finally had a chance to give it a try. This place was more spacious than I expected and renovation was interesting. The music was a bit loud though. We ordered the smoked salmon, the curry tempura udon and the salmon udon. In general, the dishes were lack of flavour. The curry sauce was a bit too watery. The smoked salmon was not fresh and had almost no flavour. The salmon was cooked with low temperature, so the texture was tender. However, the sauce was again flavourless. The portion of the food was too small in spite that the noodle was chewy with good quality. In general, the food quality was quite average here. Eaten at Menami several times in the past and love their creamy udon. This is a review for my first visit post-covid. Decided to try different items and see what it's like eating outdoor. Masks worn by staff, diners have to check in for tracing, and they do temperature check as well. I didn't really like where I was seated. It was close to the garbage which I could smell during my meal, and there constantly were cars idling right next to our table with their exhaust fumes added to the mix. If you want to eat outside, I highly recommend you see which table they want to put you at, and opt to wait for a better seat like the ones on their built wooden patio in front. Food wise I enjoyed the Unagi don a lot. Very generous amount of eel and nice use of pickled ginger and plum to balance out the flavors. The spicy salmon on rice was OK. Could've used more salmon. Food: Ricotta Fries - I was recommended this dish by friends but found nothing special about it. Though they noticed the sauce it comes with has changed since the last time they had it. Curry Rice with Pork Cutlet - Not a huge portion of pork, but it was tasty. The curry was pretty standard. Salmon Cream Udon - Very yummy! Large piece of salmon comes with the plate and the creamy sauce is very flavourful. Tempura Udon - If you don't like soggy tempura, ask for it to come in the side! The tempura is placed in the soup (this is shown in the menu photo) and is very soggy even as soon as it arrives to the table. The breading just fell off the shrimp and became an unpleasant texture to eat and in the soup. Otherwise, the soup's flavours itself was very good. Overall: Their menu has been significantly reduced from what it was previously. There use to be many more creamy and soupy udons to choose from. Though many items written above the bar is not available - which was why I chose the tempura udon. I think due to this, I wouldn't go out of my way to come to eat here but would stop by if I am in the area already. read more

I would come back but would order more wisely next time Thai Iced Tea ($8) - bad idea Smoked salmon with parsnip sauce ($12) not worth it. Salmon was fresh but got a lean cut of it so it was kind of weird. The end pieces as well as the outer portion of the salmon was smoked slightly. Parsnip sauce was nice and refreshihg except some parts tasted like armpit or something. I liked how it came with cucumbers, pea shoots, and cherry tomatoes Corn kaki-age ($5.5) - get this! Tako Wasa ($5.5) - I think this is better than the salmon appetizer because the octopus tasted really fresh even though it wasn't as spicy as I hoped it wasn't any wasabi in there I believe but they were very generous with the seaweed not so much the octopus Oven baked udon ($15) - shrimp, bacon, Tex Mex cheese. We actually went for their sake menu which had a great selection. We ordered their sake flight to start then ordered more based on which ones we enjoyed. I was actually pleasantly surprised by their hot sake, and we ended up ordering another 9 oz. It was smooth with a slight sweetness which was perfect for my taste. Their plum sake was good as well, but too sweet for me. The yuzu sake was also a great change of pace as it was almost like a sour. Depending on your taste you may or may not enjoy it, but the flights were the perfect size to sample. I can't think of too many joints that claim to make udon noodles from scratch, so I jumped at the chance to check out MeNami and their homemade noodles. We arrived right at noon on a recent Sunday and were warned that the food might be a little longer than usual because they were still making the noodles. I am happy to wait as long as necessary for freshly-made noodles. First, though, we decided to start with the Ricotta Fries ("Crispy Fries, Ricotta Cheese, Black Olive, Cheese Sauce, Jalapeno, Parsley, Grape Tomato, Tomato Salsa"), because how can you say no to something like that? It's awful. The fries tasted like generic frozen fries you can buy at the supermarket, while the various toppings, including run-of-the-mill cheese sauce, did little to alleviate the dish's lazy, phoned-in quality. I mean, this felt like something I could've thrown together on a random weeknight. It's actually pretty offensive. Expectations were, as a result, pretty low for my main, which was the Cheese Udon ("Mozzarella Cheese, Old Cheddar Cheese, Pecorino Cheese, Shrimp, Bacon, Broccoli"). I was pleasantly surprised, however, at just how tasty this dish was. The various components all work really well together, and all that cheese is completely irresistible and delicious. The noodles are spectacular, too. (It's perhaps not surprising that it's a super filling dish, as I ate about half and took the rest home.) I would certainly return to MeNami to try more of the offerings, but I'd probably steer clear of their apps. read more

When I say cozy its quite tight but it worked because it was still doing capacity so there was tables unoccupied.. the lighting/atmosphere and vibes were there. -I believe you can eat up at the bar as well for a different experience all together.. -I believe the restaurant owner came around and check in on the table and wanted us to let her know how the dishes were.. she was super cute and sweet -something that lost a point was the washroom.. I believe there is one on the main floor and downstairs but I went to the one of the main floor and it just felt uncomfortable with all the cleaning supplies including the mop inside.. TLDR: Quaint, intimate patio to enjoy some creamy udon and maybe grab a bubble tea from the happening nearby Yonge/Finch intersection (Korea town!) (Slightly) longer review for those not in a hurry: Taste (4.5/5) : I got the mentaiko cream udon, chicken karaage, and shrimp tempura curry udon (photos attached!) Mentaiko Cream Udon My favourite of all time. I always come for it! The mentaiko seemed to be a bit more subtle this time around, probably because Menami just got back into the loosened-COVID groove, but by all means it was still delicious! Don't let the small-looking portion fool you, your thirst for creamy udon will be fully satiated by the hearty portion. The creaminess of the udon just works so well with the mentaiko (seasoned fish roe). For those that like asian-fusion food, carbonara, or something zingy in a fishy kind of way, this is the dish for you! I always get it whenever I come to Menami :) Chicken Karaage Each nugget was just divine. Perfectly seasoned and juicy, this is what karrage is about. To be honest, it is a bigger chunk than the karaage I usually eat, but I ain't complaining! If you like fried chicken, this big, boneless, juicy nugget is for you. Shrimp Tempura Curry Udon There were two large shrimp tempuras. At first I thought it wouldn't be enough, but the crunchiness of the deep fried tempura ended up being the perfect portion complement for the pungent Japanese curry udon. Any more than that it might have been too heavy! Place (5/5) : The patio is such a quaint and adorable wooden structure. This would be a great date spot or friends hangout spot alike (or for a good comfort zone when you decide to friend zone someone, idk, whatever you want, live your best life). They serve alcohol and are open until late, so it's a great spot for whatever mood and whenever! They don't take reservations though, so they always recommend I call before I go, just to gauge how long I need to wait. The owner lady saw that I was having this feast so she was so considerate to ask if I wanted some Korean pickles to go with the food - helps with the oiliness so it doesn't end up being too heavy on my tummy. Where else can you find such considerate service?! I was so moved by the little lady that we ended up tipping 20% hehe (more than what I usually do because I am a debt-ridden fresh grad). After this decadent, heavy meal, the best course of action for me was to get myself a refreshing boba that was a 3 minute walk away. That's enough exercise for the day! A nice fusion tapas place in North York. You must order the corn fritters! Must get it- ended up ordering it twice! Lots of choice with the Udons and they all tasted good. We actually booked a table via the app and it was quite convenient. Seating is kind of limited but we got a patio seat and though it was tight, we were comfortable. Service was prompt and polite making this a great place to give it try! read more

Finally got the chance to try this place at Yonge street, where it can be easily spotted during the night with a bright MeNami sign. Came here one night to try their famous oven baked udon and it did not disappoint! It was busy so there was a bit of a wait to be seated and that meant the service would also be a little slower, but nonetheless wanted to give this place a try after hearing good things about the food here. The dish itself is a decent size, very cheesy and filling. Also tried the okonomiyaki pancake which was huge. The decor and overall atmosphere of the place with dim lights and lively music definitely gives off a nice late night chill vibe with friends over drinks and food. Theres a lot of options to choose from the menu and the prices are fairly decent. I would likely come back to try more things, as I enjoyed my time and food when I was here! read more

My second time coming here but it's just not my cup of tea. The first time I was here I got Kama udon. It was just okay. This time I returned because I saw many people trying their cheese udon and I love cheese, so why not? My friend I decided to share the Oven Baked Udon which has shrimp, bacon and Tex Mex cheese and it also came with a house salad. LOVE LOVE LOVE the yuzu sauce and the udon was very cheesy and creamy. I'm glad I decided to share because it would've been too filling for me to finish. We also got the corn kaki-age which was honestly meh, as were the korokke. I did however appreciate that their water had orange slices making it take and smell refreshing! Would I come back? Maybe...but not in a long while... read more

Been here a few times and each time it's been pretty good. Their creations are tasty and well presented. Think of them as a kind of fusion Tapas place. They have interesting salad that include yam and deep fried onions. Their cold tapas is predominately raw proteins of fish and beef. My particular favourite was the beef tataki. In the hot tapas area, the corn and chicken karaage are on my personal list of favs. They also have rice dishes but the noodles are their signature items. Tsunami is a tidal wave or large tide. MeNami means little tide. Which they modelled their signature noodles - little tides of goodness. They start with their own masterful Sanuki Udon and dress it up in dozens of hot and cold dishes. My fav - the Salmon Cream Sauce Udon...so tasty but so bad for the spare tire. The dishes average around $13. If you are a big eater, bring your platinum card; especially if you like to drink too.
