I appreciate that Mendocino Farms discloses the calorie count on all their menu items. Over the years it has helped me select food more wisely. I used to eat at their FiDi location in the early days (2005), and now here I was with Jamie W trying out their new Berkeley location two decades later. I just realized their proximity to the UC campus meant most of their customers weren't even born when I was dining on California Street. It gave me pause. Jamie and I decided to drop by and were greeted by a smiling employee whose main task was to welcome customers, a nice touch they've used since the beginning. Jamie ordered an old favorite, the $14.15 Avocado & Quinoa Superfood Ensalada, which combined avocado, roasted corn, black beans, jicama, grape tomatoes, red onion, quinoa & millet, superfood krunchies, kale, romaine, cilantro, and cotija mixed with chipotle vinaigrette (Photo 8). At 670 calories, it was still quite a flavorful deal. I one-upped him by ordering the 610-calorie $12.50 The Modern Caesar, which shared similar ingredients - avocado, grape tomatoes, red onion, superfood krunchies, kale, and romaine. Then added baby spinach, cabbage, Parmesan shavings, and of course, Caesar dressing (Photo 7). Pretty good, but then I didn't leave well enough alone and ordered the $6.25 cup of Lemon Chicken & Farro Soup (Photo 9). Only 180 calories, it was deliciously authentic avgolemono. We were pretty pleased with our lunch, enough for me to return solo for the soup and the $12.95 Vegan Banh Mi where baked salt & pepper tofu replaced the pork and pate and a panini-pressed ciabatta replaced a crusty roll. It was stuffed with pickled daikon & carrot, cucumber, jalapeno, Thai basil, and cilantro and drizzled with sweet chili sauce and vegan mayo (Photo 10). Good stuff for 670 calories. FOOD - 4 stars...healthy food well executed AMBIANCE - 4 stars...spacious enough with reasonable turnover SERVICE - 4 stars...an attentive culture here TOTAL - 4 stars...how many calories did I have? Another healthier option/salad spot to add to the slowly-growing East Bay list? Yes, I'll take it! How fun to now have a Mendocino Farms on this side of the EB tracks, and I'm sure a great new option for CAL students with this specific location so close to campus. A smaller Mendo Farms than others I've frequented, there is still plenty of interior seating while I can also imagine a decent to-go pull. Street parking on Shattuck is typically metered, and while not impossible, give yourself a few additional minutes to score your spot. We ordered: Chen's Crispy Rice Salad, Avocado & Quinoa Superfood Ensalada, the Grilled Turkey & Cheddar Sandwich (kids meals come with a kiddo bevvy and sliced apples, we added milk for the additional $2.75), and the star of the show for us..a side of the Spicy Curry Couscous. Yum! The service was incredibly quick and efficient, everyone was so friendly..especially to our kiddo. He was give a high chair and coloring page/crayons almost immediately, and the food wasn't too long after. I will say this was a super solid meal (and I have my specialty items from other fast casual salad joints in this immediate area), but adding Mendo for sure to the list. I loved the cashews in the Chen's Crispy Rice Salad, the avocado beautifully sliced atop the Superfood Ensalada, and the flavors of Mendo's signature curry sauce in the couscous. Well done. Mendo also has other menu items like soups, sandwiches, sides, and 1/2 sandwich combos. More deliciousness to come for future :))

I stopped by on a tough day, and Natalie's professionalism and warmth made all the difference. She welcomed me with a smile that felt genuinely uplifting. Beyond that, the food was outstanding: the vegan banh mi salad I ordered was amazing, and their guava mint lemonade was equally delightful.restaurant very clean and organized. Overall, an experience worth returning for! Thank you Natalie.

This review is based on an order we placed for delivery. I had the tomato bisque soup, the golden state cobb salad with rustic red wine vinaigrette dressing. I also had a bag of bbq chips. The salads are a good size, with lots of fresh vegetables, cheese, bacon...the soup was delicious! I will return and try other items from their menu as this was my 1st time eating here.

Amazing staff and food! I went to the soft opening and everything flowed nicely from the line, to the cashiers and the food coming out. drinks were self serve and tasty, my favorite was the guava lemonade and pomegranate mint lemonade. Salads are always great but I like the not so fried chicken sandwich & Peruvian steak!

Seasonal GOAT with pink lady apples salad

Came here on their soft opening day and let me just say. Everything was DELICIOUS. All the workers were so happy and so ready to help with anything we needed. Seating area was so cute and had great lighting and ambiance. Loved the giant "Eat Happy" sign on the wall. Great atmosphere overall, so many people found out about the soft opening! Seasonal GOAT with pink lady apples: This salad lived up to its name. It's truly one of the greatest salads I've ever had. The goat cheese gave just the perfect kick along with the pickled red onions, farmhouse vinaigrette, and hot citrus honey. Apples brought just the right amount of sweetness and absolutely loved the honey roasted almonds to give it a great crunch. It was everything I looked for in a salad and more. Highly highly recommend. "Not so fried" chicken sandwich: If you want fried chicken but want to be healthy too, this one's for you. Toasted ciabatta was so yummy, could've just eat that straight. But all the fillings worked super well together. The herb aioli was dripping everywhere and so much fell out while I was eating it, but it was so yummy. Dipped in some mustard remoulade sauce for a little spiciness. Pesto caprese sandwich: My friend swapped out the chicken for extra mozzarella cheese. Took a bite and it was just delectable. Loved the marinated red peppers with such a strong pesto and balsamic vinegar. Chicken parm dip sandwich: Also had a bite of this one and can say it was also very good. The sesame roll bread was a bit thick for my liking but the chicken was super flavorful. Basil pesto shells pasta: SO YUMMY!!! Came as a side but it was so good I could eat a whole bowl of it. Loved all the sun dried tomatoes, arugula, and feta cheese! Definitely gonna be adding these to my own pesto pastas too now. I also tried three of their housemade beverages and they had such fun flavors! Loved the get your greens, pomegranate mint, and guava drinks. Overall, great food, great vibes, will definitely be back to try more of their menu.

I had the not so fried sandwich and chicken soup. The sandwich was HELLA good. Just one of the best sandwiches I've had. Chicken was moist and bread was yummy. Soup was good too. Would come back again to try something else on the menu.

Good filling sandwich, big enough for 2. I substitute leafy greens for shredded romaine. Everything tastes fresh on it. One thing I noticed there small potato salad side in their cooler bin always has expired date, today was the 8th & the potato salads expired on the 5th. Always check their side salads dates. Clean restaurant an friendly staff.

FIRE sandwich and salad chain now in Berkeley! I was so happy Mendocino Farms opened last year on Shattuck because it's one of my favorite sandwich chains. I like how they have a good selection of choices to choose from, and they often have delicious seasonal items as well. My favorite thing to get is their "Not so Fried" Chicken Sandwich (in both sandwich ($14.75) and salad ($14.95) form) but I also really like their seasonal items which often include fruit in their sandwiches or salads. For instance, I really liked their Hot Honey & Prosciutto Sandwich from a few months ago! This location is modern and located in a convenient location in Downtown Berkeley. Service is fast and friendly -- would recommend this spot to anyone looking for a solid sandwich or salad spot in the area!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

Their food selection is also better than you'd expect from a coffee shop. In addition to coffee and pastries, they offer cakes, breakfast items, and a variety of other snacks and treats, so there's always something to pair with your drink. Their hours are convenient, making it easy to stop by throughout the day. The only area where I think there's room for improvement is cleanliness. I've noticed on several occasions that when I arrive shortly after opening--sometimes within 30 minutes to an hour--there are still crumbs on the chairs, tables, and floor, even when there haven't been many customers yet. First impressions matter, and the café should be fully cleaned and ready for guests before the doors open. Customers shouldn't have to wipe down their own tables before sitting. Overall, I really enjoy coming here and would absolutely recommend it for the atmosphere, Wi-Fi, seating, and food options. With a little more attention to cleanliness before opening each day, it would be an even better experience.
