Immersed in history... The Dental Corps picked this place for the site of their 112th Anniversary celebration. It was not a bad choice at all. The hotel is a living museum that served as a marvelous hosts tour event, themed past, present and future. The staff at the valet and the check-in were friendly and courteous. The food at the event was very good. I ordered the ribeye steak , which came with asparagus and potatoes. The wine was good. The bar was generous. The crowd inside and external to the event was friendly. The Menger staff was super accommodating in support of this event. As far as accommodations, it was fine. Our room was small, but clean and sufficient. Our room had the usual hotel amenities (soaps, shampoos, towels, etc.). It had a nice LED TV and a fridge. The room had a walk-in closet. If all you need is a place to crash, the rooms at the Menger fit the bill. Things to do: The Menger Bar is worth a visit. The bartenders are capable and the drinks well prepped. They have an in-house taqueria - Mengerita Tacos that is also worth a stopover. The people hanging out around the pool looked like they were relaxing as well. The key difference between the Menger and the other downtown hotels is its history. If you can appreciate its design, artifacts, (the chance for ghosts), proximity to the Alamo and the Riverwalk... it's a great place to spend time in. I'm happy to have stayed there. Staying at the Menger is a once in a life time experience. Definitely worth a try. read more

The Menger is an historic hotel, not a luxury hotel. If you keep that in mind, then you will enjoy your stay. Our room and a bathroom were on the small side, but comfortable enough for our four-night stay. Loved being able to look out our window and see the TR statue and nearby Alamo. For convenience, we had the breakfast buffet each day in the Colonial Room. Nothing to get excited about, but more than adequate. We did get a bit tired of the same menu each day. Our first night, we had drinks and a light supper in the Menger Bar. Truly a step back in time. The second night we met up with DH's high school classmates for drinks in the bar again. Then we walked next door to the taqueria. Good tacos! The hotel is full of history. Lots of interesting old furniture, photos, etc. Wish I had taken more time to explore. We stayed last year. It was wonderful. Since the State of Texas now owns it, it's gone downhill in a flash. Cans and trash left around from the night before. The floors were very dirty in the beautiful lobbies. They used to give you a welcome drink coupon when you arrived and now upon request they will give you a $10 food voucher for the colonial room restaurant which is closed. Valet parking is now run by a completely different company and the fees are $62 a night. No soap in the dispenser in the bathroom, the bed was absolutely horrible and we called for two roll away beds at 1:00 a.m. There's only one working elevator. The staff has been downsized tremendously, so be prepared to wait in line check in or check out for at least 30 minutes. I bought a rising dine package for a restaurant that's closed down. I asked the front desk about that and they hand wrote a note on the back of the hotel business card for the cafe attached to the hotel. When we presented this card, the sweet lady that worked there was very confused, as were we, but kindly and generously gave us a delicious breakfast burrito and coffee. We won't be staying there ever again. $400 for one night, and they cut corners every single place they could. Buyer beware read more

Beautiful spaces and lots of information related to the hotels history on the walls & through the hallways. Balcony rooms are large & can accommodate a roller bed, huge bonus! We loved our view of the pool & the sweet courtyards on property. Location is PERFECT if you plan to explore the Alamo & River Walk, 1min to Alamo & 5 to the walk. Lots and lots of shopping and restaurants are within minutes. We parked our car the entire time. The onsite bar was a happening spot and tacos next door $5 a plate. Walked in hoping to smell the signature scent of the Menger, and now there's nothing. Went to get breakfast and they no longer do a buffet-only about 6 options on the menu and priced high. Understaffed in the restaurant as well and noticeably less people eating there now. The staff was fantastic as always. read more

The birds chirping and the owl kept us up all night for two nights. if you are a heavy sleeper, this may not bother you or if you're further away from the window , but I got no sleep. The parking is $50 a day. The place is like a maze, finding the room should not be that difficult. There were some signs with room numbers, but not every entryway had them. it was close and convenient to the Riverwalk and not too expensive during the week. read more

This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Old and dirty. The shower mists you with water. It will take 30 minutes just to get the soap off your body. The hotel has control of the thermostat. They either decide if they want to heat or cool. My room was 76 degrees. read more

This is uniquely vintage San Antonio. If you choose to stay here its because of location and the nostalgic connection to old San Antonio and the river walk. Very charming. We stayed here the entire week. You don't receive room service so the trash piled up during our stay. The rooms are on the small side. Bed was comfortable and the vanity in the bathroom was small. No closers on the door. Shower head pressure could peal paint. Walls are thin so conversations could be heard by other guest. I've stayed in other hotels 1/2 the price but double the room size. read more

Loved staying here. First the place is breathtaking. If you appreciate fine architecture this place will wow you. I came here for the experience. Stayed only night. I love how welcoming this place is to ghost enthusiasts. We happened to visit Halloween weekend and I loved how everyone was respectful while curious. I did not experience anything supernatural but I will say this place was very very peaceful. The location is fantastic as well. Central to all the shopping and restaurants. The mall is next door, The Alamo is also next door right on the other side. Only one thing I would say is the smell that is pumped throughout what seems the entire hotel even the exterior is the smell that is pumped throughout it is pretty strong and overwhelming but I guess it adds to the atmosphere. I also want to mention we had our kids with us it's ages 7&9 and they both loved it here and asked to return. read more

We had horrible maid service, they made the bed and that's about all, couldn't even replace soap and shampoo and front desk asked for a credit card for incidentals and ended up putting 150.00 on it without explanation and when I saw charge I asked and they said it would be refunded upon checking out. Our son had already paid full amount due so I thought that was completely unnecessary, parking was 100.00 for 2 days I just feel that is crazy and the bathroom has not been modernized I know the hotel was built 1800's but the bathroom could be made a little more inviting in my opinion. Stayed there last month not by choice-with a group. It was a terrible experience. Would never go back and here is why: 1. The horrible smelling fragrance that is pumped into the lobby 24/7. It hits you as soon as you walk in. It stinks. I gagged every time. Smells like old lady fragrance mixed with febreeze (which is actually toxic chemicals). It is a very old hotel so they are probably covering an odor with an odor. If you have asthma, rhinitis, or any other breathing issue, beware. 2. Food at small breakfast buffet just average. Biscuits were dry, pancakes were tough, but coffee was good. 3. The pool area is not secure. Don't need a room card to get in. Anyone can walk in and use the pool-which happened two days in a row during our stay. First time, six people came in together and all of them swam in shorts and t-shirts and, of course, underwear. So the pool became a washing machine. Security should be able to recognize that they were trespassing except there was no security. They were jumping, and pushing, and yelling, but no one from security came into the pool area the whole time they were there-for the SECOND TIME THAT DAY. Another guest who saw them earlier said they were jumping off the ROOF of the small exercise room (approximately 7 feet high) INTO THE POOL. If you have children, would you want them in the pool when a man is jumping from 7 feet in the air? The second time it happened, it was four different people swimming in their clothes. I called the front desk to report the trespassers, then waited for security to show up. After five minutes, I called again. The person who answered said "ok, ok". She was bothered by the call. Security showed up 40 minutes later, coincidentally just as the trespassers were leaving. It looks like the trespassers come to swim regularly because they are aware of the LACK OF SECURITY (maybe because they are friends or relatives of employees?). When I told the manager, he did not express concern-another reason for thinking it happens regularly. 4. Very little/poor security throughout the hotel. Anyone has access to the lobby through the gift shops. You do not need a key card to use the elevator. Security does not respond when called. There are two gates for the pool but neither requires a room card for access. 5. The Alamo is under major construction for at least another year. If you like watching cranes, stay in a room at the back of the hotel (or better still, stay somewhere else). 6. If you want to use the(not large) pool and can do so when there are no trespassers, the pool will be cold in October; it is not heated until November. The days are warm but the nights are cool, so the water warms only a little and doesn't stay warm. This hotel does event and convention business. If you are staying for a vacation, there are many other options within a couple of blocks. If someone offered to pay me to stay there again , I would refuse. Hugely disappointing. read more

This is a comfortable hotel to stay in for vacation or work. I've stayed here many times for both and have always enjoyed my time. The pool area is fantastic. However, the pool needs some tile repair. There is spacious area around it, well enclosed by the hotel. The original side of the hotel rooms have unique "features" like steps up into the bathrooms. The breakfast in the hotel is delicious! The Menger is close to everything: The Alamo, The Riverwalk,  the convention center, dining, the mall. In the evening, you can take carriage rides that are found across the street. I've never seen Sally, but a friend saw something in a window, and the staff indicated was probably her; staff told him it was a window of a room that was always locked. Eerie! read more

My boyfriend and I were touring the Alamo during our stay at SATX and we passed by some questionable looking hotels nearby. We found out that two of the most haunted hotels are here at the Alamo (this one and the Emily Morgan across the street). Teddy Roosevelt used to recruit for the Rough Riders at the hotel bar here. The first time I passed by this hotel, I had no interest looking inside. After the riverboat tour, we happened to go to the Davy Crockett cabin store to check out what was inside. My boyfriend found a back exit door and holy smokes it goes into the Menger hotel. This place gives me the mega haunted hotel vibes. I just could not shake the bad juju that was emanating from every square inch of this place. I only felt better a few minutes after exiting the front entrance. I am 1000% sure this place is not only haunted, but has some unhappy occupants as well. Five stars for the haunting of the day! read more

I called on the phone many times and sent a number of emails trying to make it reservation for their thanksgiving buffet and have gotten no response from the one person in charge of the reservations. I even called to the front desk that transferred me to the restaurant where I was told they have reservations available but that I must make the reservation with the person who will not respond to my phone and email messages. I'm a sucker for historical hotels and was so glad hubby picked this hotel when we visited San Antonio. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The room that we stayed at was in the old wing and dated but it was comfortable. Second floor is supposedly haunted but we did not see any ghosts lol. My cellphone turned off on its own though at 80% while I was taking pictures so maybe that was them :D It's a walking distance to may attractions downtown, the mall and the Riverwalk. Neat historical value in this hotel. However, showing it's age and maybe not the best upkeep. Staff I was in contact with were not the friendliest. My shower ran from super hot to super cold in regular cycles. Lots of construction near Alamo plaza made for difficult Uber pick ups/drop offs difficult. read more

Stayed here for a business trip. Overall, my stay was okay. The rooms were clean; Outdated, but clean nonetheless. I did not like the fact I could not control the AC/Heating unit in my own room. If you get cold or hot...good luck! The hotel is right in the middle of Downtown San Antonio giving you easy access to the Riverwalk. In regard to other accommodations and amenities, I don't think this hotel has much to offer (unless you like hearing about how haunted it is...they have tours available). Their parking rates range between $35-$40, there is no shuttle that takes you to and from the airport, and businesses (retail, restaurants, etc.) around the vicinity open up late and close up early. read more

The staff was kind and helpful, and the common areas of the hotel are beautiful, but I had troubles in my first room and other troubles in the room I moved to after requesting a change. In my first room, the sheets had a stain, a bathroom bulb was burned out and housed in a rusted fixture, the fridge was unplugged and warm, the tv didn't work, and the tub constantly dripped. There was also hair stuck to the bathroom walls and the bathroom floor looked inadequately clean. The walls are very thin and I could hear the entire conversation being had by the next room, and they were speaking in a normal volume. I was quickly moved to another room, which I appreciated. The second room still had hair, a tub that wasn't thoroughly cleaned, and a dripping tub that also didn't drain during my shower. I don't love standing in water while I shower. I was happy for the working lightbulbs and tv and a cold mini fridge, but the heater didn't work and only blew cold air, and the light fixture was still rusted. The night was in the 40s, so I was chilly. Overall, I expect some trade offs for an old property (small tub and bathroom, thin walls, etc.) and the bed was quite comfortable. I do think they could clean bathrooms better and keep bathroom fixtures from looking rusty. You can't beat the location, though! read more

We made reservations asking for a quiet suite room for 3 nights as an anniversary celebration. The suite was facing the Alamo which was under construction. They could have put us in a suite facing the garden in the historic part of the hotel. The Menger Bar was cute but later found out it wasn't in its original location. The drinks were horrid. How do you mess up a gin and tonic or vodka cranberry. The wine choice was Kendall Jackson. The tea choice at breakfast was Lipton. I think a hotel of this caliber could do better. read more

I loved this hotel the second I set eyes on it and it was such a treat to be able to stay here! I loved every minute. The energy in here is WILD- it felt like we were on a ship walking the hallways! I swear I had to get my sea legs and finally had 'em by the second night. It's simply gorgeous in here and I love that old haunted building scent so much. It has so much history in it on display that it's like a museum. So many fascinating photos and tales! It hits all the regular run-of-the-mill hotel things on the head; service, cleanliness, etc. Be sure to eat in their dining hall. We had brunch and it was excellent! Great buffet and eggs Benedict. And the mimosas... oh! Mango is my new favorite mimosa flavor. They use purée and it's straight up heavenly. We walked all over the place at night and got so many beautiful photos. Didn't get catch any orbs or anything but it was still a wonderfully fun time exploring. Stay here instead of one of the boring chains. San Antonio is full of charm... the Menger is its capital gem! read more

This hotel doesn't get enough credit. It is like going back in time to a long lost era. The antiques, the Victorian lobby, the bar, just a gem. We love our stay. We spent an evening in the bar and saw a ghost (guy in a Rough Rider hat walked in, looked at the photo of Teddy Roosevelt walked out and disappeared) Saw this twice and we hadn't even been drinking. Bur the bar was great--good drinks and great service. Food in the hotel was up to 5 star standard. We never made it to the pool or the tropical garden. Something for the next stay. I understand this is a historic hotel, but the mattresses should be from at least the 2000's! The mattresses were awful, springs in our backs all night. The hotel itself is beautiful and we love history so we booked a balcony room for my birthday. The staff wasn't rude but everything was very transactional and impersonal. The "infamous" bar is TINY and was disappointing. Again, I understand this is a historic building but I expected there to be some modern upgrades. The pipes popped and woke us up throughout the night, the floors had holes in them when walking you could feel them under the carpet. The water temperature would go from hot to cold within seconds. It was just ok and I wouldn't stay here again. The best part was the balcony so we could people watch. read more

It's a beautiful place, for sure but if you want a good nights sleep, pray to god you don't have noisy neighbors. The walls are so thin, I can hear the guy snoring in the next room and when people go to the bathroom, it sounds like they're right in your room, with the door open. I had a noisy couple next to me that were yacking it up at the top of their lungs until about 11:00pm so I called the front desk and they responded graciously. But when they came up the couple had just left to go party somewhere for a while. The couple came back around 2:00am and started all over again shouting and laughing it up. Then finished their evening off around 3:30am with one of the loudest porn scenes ever. I'm glad my kids weren't here! Beware, this is an old hotel with thin walls! read more

Even though this is the oldest hotel across half of America it sure didn't feel that way during our stay. This hotel has personally and charm, in the good sense. We were worried that we wouldn't have air conditioning because we stayed on the "historic" side, but our room had air conditioning and a fan. We stayed nice and fresh throughout the night. The hotel staff were super friendly. Sometimes, as a person of color, you get treated or looked at differently in some environments. I didn't get that sense at all at this hotel. An example of their excellent customer service was when my fiancée forgot her glasses in the room we stayed in. She remembered on the way to the airport. They found them and were kind enough to mail them to her house. Her glasses almost made it home before we did. Talk about service! In case you were wondering, we did not see any ghost during our stay. read more

My husband and I stayed for New Years. We were so excited to stay in an iconic and historic hotel. Check in was easy. Although we were charged an extra $75 for "incidentals". We were also "invited" to a happy hour at the bar for nachos, tacos and drinks. At the bar the staff were absolutely rude. We asked if we should sit and be served or do we order at the bar. We were told by the bar staff that "this is just like any other bar. Order here and go where you want." Then he proceeded to walk past us. As he said "excuse me, I need room" I tried to move but I guess not fast enough as the bar was a little busy, he rushed past me and bumped me pretty hard. He didn't even acknowledge it. We ordered 2 beers and an order of nachos that cost $34! And let me say the gas station style nachos and gross warm beer was not worth it at all. When we asked what was close by to get dinner we were told "you're downtown. You can go anywhere". The rest of the night went well as we were not just staying inside our room but exploring downtown. In the morning about 8 am we can hear the ruckus of housekeeping in the hall outside our door talking so loudly. We decided just to get ready and check out. We went down to get our car and we were never asked for a ticket or id. They went to bring our car about 20 minutes later. And we were charged $47 for that.. as I returned home I realized I left my AirPods in the room. I have called every single day and left messages for housekeeping (because I was told they're the only ones who can help me) and exactly 2 weeks later I still cannot get a response. I would not waste my money again on a name (the hotel). There was nothing extraordinary about this place. The staff needs better customer service skills. read more

ONE COMPLAINT :NOT ENOUGH NIGHTS ! We absolutely loved our stay . I took my daughter and granddaughters to see spurs game and chose this hotel . I hadn't stayed here in 20 years. So , so glad I chose here . This historical 160 plus year old hotel has everything you need . My granddaughters and I went exploring after game . We fell in love with the beauty all around us. Shout out - MARTHA IS A GREAT ASSET to this. Hotel . So helpful and friendly . We were able to check in earlier w our lil 3 year old we had .. this was truly a blessing . Will definitely be back. Valet - not expensive at all and u get in /out privilege. Room service - dinner for kids after game was great . Burgers/chicken strips ( kids) salad for us adults . Btw, we ordered our room service while still in traffic at game . It was late and by time we got to hotel we knew they'd be closed at 10! With 3 year old we didn't want fast food or going into a place to eat. We had a beautiful view of Alamo from our two rooms which we loved . ROOMS : great view from room #5108 /5110 The beds were comfy and we had double beds ( out of queen size at time of booking ) our rooms were adjoining so, we were able to move back and forth without going out hotel room each time . The decor was beautiful and baths were updated and clean. I was concerned about reviews stating hotel was hot or cold to them .. we had no issues . I did have fans delivered to room just Incase it got stuff or hot. I like cool settings . First time there, always wanted to visit! Decor inside is awesome, if you are a history buff! Lots of old pictures, exhibits of old RoughRiders items, Teddy Roosevelt memorabilia! Room was nice for as old as the building is, bathrooms were updated, but small. Big guys like me need to be a gymnast to use the toilet! LOL. The bar was nice, but needs better A/C, especially when people come and go out into the outside from the exterior door. Valet was decent, until they lost the keys of our friends we were traveling with. Seemed to be kids running the Valet, someone had their bags gone through and electronics missing out of their bags that weekend also. All and all, it was a very nice hotel, across the street from the Alamo, and close to everything! read more

Such a big disappointment I can't wait to go back home and forget I even stayed here.. thank goodness its my last night. It started out Valet was great. Service at the restaurant & bar was hit & miss. Had request for our room to be cleaned when they did they only changed the bedding. No refrigerator or microwave. Had to ask for towels and soap. The AC drain pan emptied on my head, face & clothes as I walked in the room today. I hope I don't get sick from who knows what! No one contacted me with apologies or to make amendments. Old hotels that have a deep history are always worth a visit, but staying at them can be hit or miss. It's a great place to visit, grab some drinks, and have some mango ice cream, but staying here leaves a lot to be desired. Our room was clean, but the room/bed is not exactly comfortable. The temperature was difficult to control and keep at an ideal temperature, but I can see where this would be very unpleasant in mid-summer (we stayed here in March). Our tub also didn't drain well and it's never fun splashing around while trying to take a shower. We were also hopeful for some paranormal activity given it's haunted history, but the most we got was some flickering lights that was probably more indicative of old bulbs/wiring (anything else would have been a bonus!) The Menger is in a great location as it's right near the Alamo and the Riverwalk is right there as well, but given that it's not a comfortable place to stay, I would stay somewhere else and just visit the Menger when you're in the area. read more
