I am giving this property five stars. With a caveat I will describe. The customer service at this hotel was incredible. The staff were absolutely amazing from the moment I arrived until the time I left. They were constantly checking on my family when we were in the public areas. The room was well appointed and spacious. Kept very clean. The attached restaurant (Nonna's) was also very good. Great service. Great food. Promptly delivered to our tables in a flawless manner. The lobby and rooftop bar was staffed by Rachel (sp?). Being blunt. The woman kicks ass. She is on it when you are at the bar. Waiting for any length of time (+30s) is not an option. Now the only downside. Which I have to believe can be easily addressed by hotel management and staff. No one could figure out how to control the HVAC system in our rooms. They were set very low. The room was freezing. The staff did not hesitate to bring more blankets for my 89 year old mother. But the more desirable wish would have been for a room at a comfortable temperature. Despite staff coming to my room and raising the temperature. The fan was constantly going. I was able to turn it off. Only to have it turn back on around midnight. If that can be changed. I would rate this an excellent property if one is wanting to stay near the Riverwalk without needing a view of it. Lots of other things to see in this part of San Antonio. This property is within walking distance for many of them. One last point. This is completely beyond the hotel's control. There was (at this writing) a significant amount of road construction on the street in front the hotel. It is accessible with detours that may not be obvious to a rideshare or taxi driver unfamiliar with this part of town. The value and atmosphere of this property warrant serious consideration if downtown San Antonio is a destination. read more

We stayed for 3 nights in a room with a balcony that overlooked the Hemisfair. Over half the rooms were booked - but walls are thick and it was quiet. Excellent location - walking distance to the River Walk, many restaurants, Hemisfair, Tower of the Americas, La Villita - and maybe even the Alamo (10 minute walk). Half the building was built in 1906 and restored. Has 2 restaurants inside, a full bar (staffed by the amazing Rachel), and a rooftop bar. All the people were friendly and helpful. We tried everything - after spending each day on our feet getting miles and miles of walking. Had a mini-bar in the room. Room was cleaned every day. The bartender, a waitress, and even one of the busboys really were helpful and shared ideas of things to see. Sleep quality was fantastic. We liked that it operates as an independent. read more

One of the best movies of the 90's was The ROCK with Sean Connery and Nick Cage. Once out of jail there's a suite scene at the Fairmont Hotel where Connery hangs an FBI chief off a balcony. Yeah, perhaps a play on words as this is the Fairmount. Storied old San Antonio building just off the Riverwalk. Not as easy access as some but the price was about half of the twenty story places. Two restaurants, lobby bar, rooftop bar, and plenty of charm. First mini bar I've seen in awhile. I did indulge on the way out with a morning Margarita while packing. Perhaps another sip too that's been forgotten. Our space was lovely with a door leading to a space where I could step out and smoke. Excellent service from checking in to valet. We did make it to the rooftop bar too. No issues with service there as others have noted. Delicious drinks with a view of downtown. Overall on my list perhaps a bit spendy but by far it's a bargain compared to other hotels. Especially when you're allergic to places like La Quinta. read more

We stopped in here for a drink at the bar and decided to enjoy some oysters from the rooftop lounge hoping to get better service than what we experienced at the bar. The MOD was chatting up the bartender so it was difficult to compete with her attention span. When the evening bartender came on, the MOD continued the conversation to include the daily recap and to highlight his recommendations around the menu...which i supposed would have been nice if the conversation remotely included the only two people at the bar but we were ignored. We headed to the rooftop bar to enjoy some oysters, at least we could do that or so we thought. Bartender upstairs was nice, we ordered half a dozen and they were delivered. Unfortunately, they were plated on large ice cubes which quickly succumbed to the Texas heat and before you knew it the oysters were swimming. Someone needs to instruct the kitchen on how to properly shuck oysters without stabbing the poor things. They were destroyed as was our anniversary cocktail hour. The bartender sent them back and returned letting us know the chef was shucking another batch. Fast forward 45 minutes and we decided to give up. We left, without oysters and paid the entire bill. Wont recommend. My boyfriend and I had a reservation at Fairmount on Thursday, April 3rd. We were super excited because we were celebrating a year since we met, and this area is special to us--we live close by and love finding cool local spots. We saw they had live jazz on Thursday nights, which sounded perfect. But honestly, the experience was a total letdown. We showed up right on time for our reservation, but things just dragged from the start. It took about 25 minutes to even get menus, then almost 30 more before anyone came to take our order. We waited 45 minutes and still didn't have our drinks. Meanwhile, the table next to us (who came in after we did) already had theirs. At that point, we decided to just leave. We were really disappointed--and kind of annoyed too. Like, why take reservations if you're not able to keep up? It also felt like they were super understaffed, which happens, but no one said anything or checked in with us. read more

The Fairmount hotel rooftop treated my friends and I well! The drinks were delicious and strong, and the bartenders were extremely friendly. We were branching out from what we'd usually drink, and they were great as asking us what our palate was, and what we wanted to try, and would personalize drinks for us throughout the night. Went from wine to espresso martinis to personalized drinks. The appetizers and a charcuterie board was set out. Super smart of them to have little fans to keep flies off the food, which I appreciate as a clean freak! The staff was also kind, welcoming us into the hotel and being gentlemen both at the valet and in the elevator. The view is also nice, and sets a great atmosphere if you're here on a date or with your girlfriends. Quiet enough to have a good conversation, plus it being outdoors is a plus during Covid-friendly times! read more

I've stayed here a few times. This time I stayed in room 215 which was a deluxe king plus. Comfy bed, expresso machine, complimentary Fiji water and best of all NONNA Italian Restaurant. You can dine in or they will deliver to your door.. there is a downstairs bar , fresh herbs in mostly everything they make. Sprigs of mint, basil, and a vast amount of liquers. They even have house made syrups. Thery are undergoing renovations in some areas. The whole modernism thing i get it, wood and metals. Warm nuetral colors accented by vivid hues...However the rooms before reconstruction were absolutely lovely. There is an upstairs bar outside ( patio bar) There is also Silo prime and Nonnas for the best rigatoni and carbonara youve ever tasted in your life. read more

My friends and I had a nice time at Fairmount. We got there right after sunset so it was a bit chilly, but the bartender was kind to turn the heaters on. For the table we ordered the Fried Asparagus Risotto, Akaushi Beef Meatball, and the Artisanal Cheese Platter, our favorite! However, everything was delicious. We had espresso martinis that were very tasty and a surprise drink. Everything was reasonably priced for the downtown area. The bartender was very kind and made the experience that much better. Wow! This place has incredible views!! We came soon after dining at Silos Prime. It was a rainy evening but this did not stop us from going to the rooftop bar. We went with their dirty martinis and beer. Because of the weather, seating was plentiful. I see myself returning to this bar on a nice evening. I was very much looking forward to staying at this historic hotel. Sadly, the hotel is packed with architectural charm, but sorely lacking in comfort and service. When we checked in, we were assigned room #202. It is not really a room; it is an adjunct to a suite and contains a kitchenette, a bed, a bathroom, a tv hanging on the wall and a 2-foot marble top table. Other than the bed, here is no place to sit; no nightstands, no dressers; no place, other than the floor and a tiny closet, to set your belongings. The "room" does not even have a telephone. We asked to be relocated, and were moved to room #314, Other than again having no place to sit except on the bed, it was fine. There was plenty of storage and the bathroom was spacious. I was so confused about the service comments I had read; I had read that the staff was friendly and excellent. We rarely saw anyone in the lobby, other than when the bartender was on duty in the late afternoon. We requested assistance with a 4:30 am taxi pick up reservation. The day before check-out we asked to confirm that a taxi had been ordered and had been assured there was no problem. Big problem, we went downstairs at 4:15 and the gentleman on service was extremely upset because he had never been told that we needed a taxi and none had been ordered. He immediately contacted a taxi service; but It took until 4:45 or 4:50 for the taxi to arrive. We just made it through security and to our gate in time to start our flight boarding process. My last comment has to do with construction. The streets are torn up and a building is under construction. Walking around and through the debris is an inconvenience, but not a problem. What is a problem is the fact that beginning between 5:30 am and 600 am you are assaulted with the associated noise of construction. The beep beep beep of the vehicles, the digging machines, the shouts and general noice from the cars and personnel makes it impossible to sleep. My recommendation is to stay away from this hotel for the next 6 months to a year. read more

Stayed here for three nights with my 11 year old son as we explored San Antonio. We had the best time. The room was gorgeous, as is the hotel overall. It is comfy and feels super fancy. Everyone we encountered who worked there was very nice. it is a very old hotel and has some quirks - for example, our floors were a little slanted, and the key to open the door had to be finagled a bit to unlock the door. BUT it was pretty cool to have a hefty, antique-looking room key instead of a plastic card. Everything (but the door lock) was updated, the linens were lovely, the temperature was comfortable and adjustable, the shower pressure was wonderful, there were huge windows with shutters that opened, making the room so bright and cheery, and the room didn't smell weird. The one thing that could've bothered us was the nighttime noise level. It was pretty noisy at night - car noise, people, footsteps above us. Luckily we just had white noise playing pretty loudly on each side of the bed and we were able to drown that out and sleep really well. This was a great home base for us. We ate dinner at the italian restaurant downstairs, Nonna, and it was delicious and the service was great. We ordered pizza from Dough about a block away, and it was very tasty and super fast. There is a really cool playground behind Dough with lots of ropes to climb. We had an easy walk to Tower of the Americas and the River Walk. We ate breakfast at Shilo's twice, which is just a few blocks away and was super tasty with good service (and very reasonably priced). It was also a quick walk to the mall thing that has Lego Discovery. Using the valet was easy and quick. It took about 12 minutes to drive to Toyota stadium, 30 minutes to Natural Bridge Caverns, and 15 minutes to Get Out of my Escape Room (which is amazing if you are looking for an escape room to try). Having the Fairmount as a home base really made our trip top-notch. read more

Second stop on our first annual Christmas Eve pub crawl. Rooftop bar accessed only by an elevator in the lobby of the hotel. Maybe you need a reservation? We didn't have one and there was no problem. The weather was amazing for this time of year, sometimes it happens! My husband stuck with an old fashioned and me the bartenders favorite...which also happened to be an old fashioned. WORST HOTEL. DO NOT STAY HERE! Let's start off with the room door was hard to open, I had to ask a couple staying down the hall to help. I understand that this is an older building but the decor literally looks dingy. Everything was dusty, the bathroom (sigh) the bathroom was disgusting. Rust, mold, dirty. The toilet barely flushed, the shower head looked like I was going to need a tetanus shot after, the sink handles were so rusted they wouldn't turn all the way, mold on the shower curtain. No mini fridge in the room, No pool. Their "free wifi" had NO SIGNAL. The TV kept lagging and glitching. Extremely disappointed and dissatisfied for the price I paid. I might as well of stayed at the Red Roof Inn, same experience for a 1/4 of the price. When everything around the hotel is so upscale and renovated I expected more. read more

Not impressed. This hotel is not only pricey, but the valet is almost $50 a night! They had one person valeting the cars and running the front desk. It was not efficient and made for a long wait. I got my room and went up the elevator only to find I had to go up a flight of stairs to my room. It was hard lugging my suitcase up. I got in to find a very old disgusting room. I love antiques, but renovated not old and disgusting! The room had no remote and no phone to call the desk. So I went back down a flight of stairs and then an elevator and waited 20 minutes for someone to come back. He ended up putting me in another room. I walked into the new room and it was like a heat wave hit me. So I looked at the thermostat and it was on the coldest setting. So I went back downstairs and waited again. The guy cane back and said he has to flip a switch because it runs on a water system. I went back to the room and it did cool off. However, the mattress is years old, hard and lumpy. See the pictures. I will never stay here again. The only positive is the front desk guy remained smiling even after running ragged doing the valet and front desk. It's such a shame they let a historic building fall into disrepair. The rooms are filthy and smell of mildew, smoke and unfortunately mine smelled of sewage. The windows do not even open to escape the stench. If you do try to open the windows your hands will be covered in the caked on dust. The rooftop bar is amazing and the front desk was very attentive and kind. Unfortunately it needs a total gut job when it comes to guest rooms. There were bugs of every assortment. Made a reservation at this hotel as we found a great rate for an old favorite for date weekend. We arrived during check in time. I reserved a king room online. I guess there was a glitch because when we got to our appointed room it was a full or queen bed. Plus it had a horrible smell. We went back to the desk and they quickly remedied and moved us to another room. Mind you it was cool on check in day and it was cold in the dark, old room. The heater did not work. Someone came in and had to switch the system from ac to heat. This did not work. After about half hour of this we were moved to room 200 off of the balcony. Beautiful room and the heat worked. But be warned. This hotel cannot run AC and heat in the same day or night. The next morning with the sun beating down on the big unprotected glass the room got hot fast. We could not run ac as it was set on heat mode. I could not get out of there quick enough and outside to a much more comfortable temperature. This heating and cooling system was definitely a turn off. The vents are dirty and need to be seriously cleaned. read more

This hotel is in dire need of a communications/marketing/PR plan. Most of the photos posted on Yelp are from a disgruntled customer who did not enjoy her stay one bit! This is pretty much all that is listed for this hotel...has the owner even seen this page? I'm pretty sure there are hundreds who land on this page and see all those horrible photos and keep going. I think there were only 4 people in the whole hotel when we stayed there...3 were in my room. The room I was fortunate enough to stay in was nice - It was a gold & black theme. The curtains were broken and would not close all the way, but after seeing all the photos posted of the mold, the torn wallpaper, etc., I think we were very lucky. There were oranges in the lobby for breakfast and cookies later in the day. The hotel restaurant was under construction, so there was no room service. Interesting place. Has charm and character, but seems that attention to detail may be missing in the day-to-day operations. it seems like this place was a once loved hotel that has been severely neglected over time. read more

The fairmount, Ahh the splendor. The fairmount is to hotels what Robert Redford is to entertainment: aging, but damn handsome none the less. The fairmount is a stones throw from the Alamo (always remember), the Skytower, and plenty of bars. Speaking of bars, the fairmount does not have one. Bummer central. Rooms are spacious, gym is tiny, complimentary breakfast is nonexistent, and the staff is both friendly and accommodating. read more

This hotel would be fine as a 2 star but it's billed as a 4 star and isn't even close. The rooms are old and musty. Our first room has mold in the bathroom vent and had peeling wallpaper. We toured 6 more rooms before finding one that was just acceptable, again at a 2 star hotel. They claim they are doing renovations. Stay FAR AWAY until they are done. read more

I came to stay at the Fairmount for a few days in October with family. My sister was in town for the child psychiatry convention, which was right across the street. The location is great and the building is quite charming. If you do a search online, you'll find a video of the hotel, which was moved from another location in San Antonio! It's in the Guinness Book of World Records as the "Heaviest Building Ever Moved on Wheels." It's fairly fascinating. The hotel is a stone's throw from La Villita, a shopping/arts village, The Alamo, The Riverwalk, shops, and restaurants. The building is over a hundred years old, and you can tell that it's been a while since they decorated. The fixtures are a little dated (brass bathroom fixtures and doorknobs, actual keys for the room door, very few outlets, internet modem in the room). I mean, things were clean, but everything could use a refresh. I think if they did that, they could charge a little more for the rooms. It's a charming little place, however, if you want to get away from the beaten path of chain hotels. They accept pets, and even have a storied past with Luke, a labrador who was their canine mascot. You could request him to stay in your room with you, and even take him for walks! Sadly, he passed away in 2012. In the evening, they stock chocolate chip cookies on the coffee bar, and all day you can fix yourself some coffee/tea/hot chocolate. In the morning, they have fresh fruit. The service is great, but just be warned--everyone is a "concierge" type employee, so the guy who valets your car may also be the bellhop and the person who checks you in/out. A little weird, but I guess that works for them. I think if they added a breakfast option (the courtyard in the middle would be great for it), they could really add value to their place. Also, a little refresh in decor and fixtures would help as well. read more

I know it is not easy to save, restore and running the old hotel of history over 110 years old. I can tell there are so many on going repair and maintenance they need to do. Some says, it is not a good hotel but I will say- if you want to stay at the historical site a good access to the convention center and a River Walk, this is a good one. It feels like being in a European Museum. Hope they will keep it in the good condition and remain the charm of the old days. read more
