Great staff, amazing atmosphere and comfy beds. It's old so things may a bit ancient like the water pressure was ok and the bathrooms were standard. But it is the best location for walking and doing things. Even in the bitter heat. And the view we had of the pool was excellent. Neat shops attached to the hotel and even a bar/cafe that not bad. The parking is expensive so factor in about $50 for overnight valet parking. We got a deal where the parking was included so it was worth it. Make sure you walk all the floors in the older part of the hotel. Well worth it. We will be back. read more

Two stars because most of the staff is friendly, but that's about where the compliments end. If you're someone who likes sleeping in a room cooler than a baked potato, prepare for disappointment. The thermostat is apparently just decorative because the room goes no lower than 75 degrees. I spent three nights trying to convince myself that "warm and cozy" was a luxury feature. It wasn't. The room itself feels like it missed its renovation by about 20 years. The shower looked like it had seen multiple presidential administrations who, just like this shower and let's be honest, nobody really really liked. Continuing on, the ceiling, in the shower/tub mind you, featured a random exposed pipe with grease stains around it that looked less like an industrial design choice and more like a maintenance project someone abandoned halfway through. Nothing says "premium hotel" quite like wondering what happened up there. The paint job deserves its own review. I don't know who painted the trim, but I'm convinced they either skipped the painter's tape entirely or were competing in an abstract art contest. There are sloppy brush marks and globs of paint everywhere. It's one of those things you can't stop noticing once you see it. Housekeeping also seemed to operate under the philosophy that coffee in your room is a one-time welcome gift. After three nights, not once was the in-room coffee restocked. It's a small thing, but it's also one of the easiest details for a hotel to get right. And then there's the parking, oh boy, then there is the parking. Nearly $70 a night to park a vehicle is outrageous, and at that price, I expected my car to be washed, waxed, and tucked in with a bedtime story. Instead, it was just... parked. The hotel isn't a complete disaster, but for the room quality and the prices they charge, the experience just doesn't add up. There are too many better options in San Antonio to justify paying any rate greater than a hostile for this hotel that boasts dated rooms, a tropical indoor climate, and parking fees that feel like a second hotel bill. read more

Don't stay here. No wonder the price is so good here. It's a dump. Air condition doesn't work. Room 2100 is hot, humid, musty. I grabbed a fan from the hallway. Feels like they knew there was an issue if they're placing random fans in the hallway for people to use. I feel like I am camping. After researching. I found that the hotel belongs to the state (since 2025) and they've hired a hospitality company to run it. It's in transition with plans for renovation. For our room: Water leaks in the bathtub constantly and you can't turn it off. The tub is peeling and there's mildew in the grout. The room is humid and hot. Exercise room: Disgusting. There's nothing to wipe down your equipment, most of the weights are missing. The clock on wall doesn't work. You don't need your room card to get in because the entry pad maintained here. Pool: dark green for most of our visit. Even for the price we paid. Security: anyone can come in off the street near the valet and get on the elevator so there's not a safety program here. I feel like there's an expectation for a certain level of quality that's not being maintained here. Don't fall for their parking price. You can park down the street for $15 a day. There are no bellhops and maid service only when requested. It looks like a lot of the artifacts were removed from the hotel and now there are just copies or replicas. It's such a shame. It was once an incredibly interesting historic hotel. They say by next year things should be better so wait until the repairs and updates are made before you stay here. If you enjoy historic hotels, I definitely recommend the Menger Hotel. The Menger has a definite history within San Antonio and is well worth checking out. The Menger used to be an old hospital and has been re-conditioned to become a very nice hotel with absolutely beautiful Victorian style lobby. This place is really, really unique. It is beautiful and ornate in its style and fun to be in. The wing we stayed in was indeed an older one with a large step up into the bathroom with was unique. The room was clean and pleasant with a nice view of the courtyard. There are some great stories of the Menger being haunted and while we didn't see any ghosts, I can see how this could be possible being an old hospital. The hallway to our room was big and a bit eerie with the big mirror at the end of the hallway. We enjoyed our stay, the bed was comfortable but the three negative things through me a bit. The checking in and checking out was very difficult and the staff was not as friendly as I would have expected and the valet service to pick up your car was absolutely dreadful. 30 minutes to get your car? No, I don't think so. Over all, our stay was very nice and there were no other issues but the customer service was very poor which dominated my rating. The Menger is near a lot of activities like the Alamo and the Waterwalk which made thing extremely convenient. We loved our stay at Menger Hotel! The history, the nicely-maintained building and rooms, the beautiful bar, the lovely balcony and view, it was lovely. The front desk staff was fine, but I saw an area of opportunity to get to know why the guest had come to this historic hotel and give us a quick FYI about certain areas, relics, and fun facts as there is so much to read and learn. Checkout was also fine, but the person didn't ask about our stay, welcome us back in the future, or anything that suggests above and beyond. Our room was nice and well-maintained. The balcony view was worth the extra couple dollars, but the furniture out there was not super comfortable. The beds were comfy, and the room was in good condition given the age. The pool was nice, huge chess board and outdoor games for fun too. The older part of the hotel had a smell that only very old buildings have; it doesn't smell musky or moldy at all, but it has that comforting old building smell. The stained glass, chandeliers, windows, elevators, all were in very good condition. I loved all the relics and getting the chance to look at the wood carving details all throughout the buildings. The older part of this hotel is wonderfully maintained - preservation is obviously very important. I loved the bar. I loved the smell. I loved the dark wood, the history, the entire feeling of the bar. Beautifully maintained and while it was a small space, it didn't seem crowded. We would definitely come back again. While we had read plenty about the hauntings in the hotel, never once did we feel that vibe, but it was a very busy Saturday night with lots of people. read more

Had a recent 4-night stay at Menger Hotel. Loved the overall look and feel. An historic hotel that retains a ton of the old school feel and charm. Room was nicely appointed and comfortable enough. Only issue was a step-up to enter that bathroom area. Wasn't really an issue for us, but it could impact someone with mobility issues. Pool area was ok, maybe needed a little TLC. Had a drink in the bar, which was very cool. Did not eat in the restaurant. Lots of old memorabilia throughout lobby and public spaces. Location was excellent. Short walk to RiverWalk attractions and Alamo is literally right next door. Would stay again. read more

This historic hotel was built in 1859 by Willian and Mary Menger. As one of the oldest buildings in the city and the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi River, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Approximately thirty-two spirits haunt the hotel. The Victorian-era lobby is stunning, and the décor is gorgeous - stained glass windows, marble floors, ornate wallpaper, historic artifacts, & lavish Corinthian columns add to the elegance. I'd feel like a queen if I stayed here. We initially intended to take The Sisters Grimm Ghost Tour of the hotel but couldn't fit it in our tight schedule, so we wondered around the hotel ourselves. Piggybacking on Guy H.'s experience in 2023... I am happy to report that the Menger Hotel is indeed still "alive" and well. My girls and I stayed here May 25-27, 2025. I booked a package that entailed a classic two doubles room with a balcony ($583.96). Our package was called "Room with a Boo" and included: + Two tickets to Sister Grimm walking haunted tour (my 10 & 11-year-olds loved it) + One autographed copy of the Haunted History of Old San Antonio + Two complimentary adult specialty cocktails + Daily complimentary valet for one vehicle + Priority early check-in (which we used) and late check-out The beds were not comfortable in my opinion. There were some lesser maintained areas. The front desk didn't give me my driver's license back right away and I was distracted by the millions of questions my children were asking about the famous ghost hotel. We really enjoyed it, though, overall. Fast valet. Relatively fast elevator. Clean room. Clean bathroom. Friendly hospitality. Fast bartenders. Very cool, yet, loud bar. I called yesterday to see if they offer early check in and they said yes. The lady told me that there would be no charge if I arrived after 12pm . When I arrived today they told me that that there would be a 75 fee if I checked in before 1 pm . So needless to say I don't like being lied to or misinformed by a business. So I would not recommend this particular hotel. There are many other hotels in San Antonio. I recommend that you check them out first.After I finally check in . There is a leak in the room. The room was not just cleaned or the maid would have seen the huge leak in the room.So I had to go downstairs again with all of my luggage to get a different room . This is ridiculous. If I hadn't already paid I would leave. The room that I ended up with is not the suite that I paid for, it doesn't look anything like the Victorian suite. My husband and I have stayed at this hotel several times since 2023 and we loved it. This past time was probably our last time staying here. They did not advertise that their dining room was closed. They no longer serve breakfast which was one of our favorite parts of the hotel. No nice glasses for our mimosas, no robes in the room and the a/c didn't work. They did comp us for the two nights we stayed so at least they tried to make it right but we are still disappointed with the experience we had. It just isn't the same since the new owners took over. read more

Stayed here several times over the last 30 years, and had a very substandard experience last weekend. My small room never got below 77 degrees, and I found a cockroach on my shower curtain. I'm not necessarily peeved about those items individually (things happen), but I am annoyed at the complete lack of response from the management after I emailed them. There are dozens of hotels downtown to choose from, and there's nothing inherently special about the Menger. If the management doesn't care enough to address guest concerns, why not stay at the Palacio Del Rio or Crockett? read more

I was staying at the Menger for a Convention. The hotel was so dirty! I don't think they cleaned the rooms before we moved in. My roommate went to take a shower, and there was a wad of hair in the drain. When she moved the shower curtain, a dirty wash rag fell on her. When I showered later, I noticed shaving remnants on the shower curtain. There was only the roll of toilet paper on the roll. No extra. We had to ask multiple times to receive it. We were told they don't clean the rooms during your stay, but there was nothing written anywhere stating this. We had to call for clean towels. Also, the restaurant is closed. I've stayed in better hotels for 1/2 the price. Save your money! read more

If you are a fan of historic hotels, the Menger does not disappoint! I have lived in San Antonio for over a decade and have often brought out-of-town visitors to see the lobby, visit the shops, and have drinks in the quaint bar. This week, an animal died under our house, and we had to escape the odor for a few nights. My husband and I decided on a Menger staycation, and we just loved it! First, Eric at the front desk is the most attentive hotel employee that I have ever met. He is smart, helpful, and polite. He helped us extend our stay by another night when we decided we needed to enjoy more of our time there. He even helped me fix an error that I had made in my booking. The hotel remains under private ownership, which is rare these days. Most historic places have been bought by chains, but the Menger maintains its individuality. When I passed rooms that were being cleaned in the historic wing, I noticed that each was a different color and decorated distinctly. Our room was a lovely lavender, and the original bathroom tiles were charming. We had a comfortable mattress, convenient refrigerator, and large television. I highly recommend the room service because prices are very reasonable. We also tried the breakfast buffet. It wasn't spectacular, but the historic dining room was. It's worth at least one visit while you're there. The Victorian lobby is gorgeous, and it's especially fun to see it from the second and third floor. The shops are really fun to visit. I loved the Sisters Grimm and found many presents for family there. One thing that I noticed was that everyone working at the hotel seemed to be in a good mood. I imagine that I would take pride in working in such a place. The lobby and the gardens are great for lounging. Plenty of non-guests do pass through, but that used to be me, so I cannot complain. I'm adding the Menger to my list of favorite historic hotels. It's up there with the Roosevelt in NYC and the Palmer House in Chicago. As the Alamo Plaza is renovated, the space and views will only get more beautiful. read more

I stayed at the Menger Hotel many years ago during my university days--for a conference. This is a vintage hotel and historic landmark of sorts. What I remember most: the hotel's famous mango ice cream. We ordered it from room service. According to Robb Walsh, who has a recipe for the ice cream posted on his website, the hotel's old dining room hosted "...Presidents Harding, Taft and McKinley." I would like to experiment with making this ice cream, but also wish more ice cream parlors had a good mango flavor like this. On a different note, I enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would like to stay there again when I go back to San Antonio one of these days. read more

The beds are comfortable but cleaning leaves some to be desired. Why only 3 stars we found someone's very crusty socks behind the curtains. The shower is small so he had a big problem fighting the shower curtain when he showered, also could not keep the drain open on the tub so it would drain when you showered would have to hold it open manually when you got done(yes reported this problem and the socks to the front desk). For the price there is no complimentary breakfast and if you want room service from the kitchen be prepared to pay the extra fees. Also we used valet parking and we were brought the wrong vehicle, it took 30 minutes to get our vehicle after waiting 20 minutes to be brought the wrong one. We love that the hotel is so old, the bar has such character and the court yard is beautiful. Everything is pretty much walking distance. It just seems that more effort could be put into maintenance and cleaning. read more

I have never given anywhere a bad review. That's about to change. I called the hotel directly about 6 weeks before my visit to make sure I got what I wanted. I wanted a king bed with a view of the pool at The Menger Hotel. I didn't get that. What I got was a king bed with a view of the roof. Our room was very close to an elevator but it was broken. Instead we had a very very long walk (including up one level) to the closest elevator. The kicker was the door to our room. It stuck badly going in. We had to bump it with our hip to open it. That was the easy part. Getting out of the room was another story. It took my husband (6'-3" 200 lbs) and I (5'-7" 130 lbs) pulling on the door forever to get out. I ended up calling the front desk; they never answered. After about 10 min of pulling we got out. I immediately called the fire department because of the fire hazard. There are much nicer hotels in this area in the same price point. The good: It's a historic building, so uneven floors, exposed plumbing, and old carpet are expected and normal. The valet was quick and polite, there's a street level bar, an interior museum, the Alamo is across the street and the riverwalk is a 5 min walk away. The bad: -the building isn't well maintained. The ceiling tiles are dirty and broken, everything just feels dingy. The air smells odd, and nothing lives up to the photos (including the pool). -There's a $54/day valet fee or you can pay to park in a public lot and walk a few blocks. -The elevator was broken to my floor, so I had to walk the entire length of the building to a different elevator, ride up to 1 floor above mine, then walk the length of the building again to where the hallway just kinda slopes down to the correct floor. -The room was very small. The patio was scummy and molding (and inaccessible). I found someone's dirty clothes stuffed in a cabinet in my room. -The breakfast is $26+. read more

My husband and I have stayed here several times and always had wonderful experiences. Unfortunately, most recent stay under new management was disappointing. We arrived Wednesday evening to find the elevator out of service. We understand things break, but this seemed to set the tone for the stay. We also noticed the signature scent from the diffusers, something we always enjoyed, was gone. Once in our room, we found a half roll of toilet paper and no spare. I went to the front desk to request another roll, but was told it had to be delivered to the room, which took about 45 mins. The next morning, we discovered there was no bottled water in the room despite a sign stating it was complimentary. During previous stays, this had never been an issue. We left around 10:30am and saw housekeeping in the hallway. When we returned around 4:30pm our room had not been serviced. There were no fresh towels, the toilet paper had not been replaced, and the body wash dispenser was still empty. When I called the front desk, I was told guests must request housekeeping and bottled water! I suggested these policies should be explained at check-in, but received no response. The requested items were delivered within 20 mins but the overall experience lacked the hospitality and attention to detail we remembered from previous visits. We truly miss the experience under the former management. Also, the AC was not running well which is a must in Texas! Sad to say but we will not be staying here again! read more

A tale of two visits; same room. Mom who was born in San Antonio wanted to revisit her roots over last Christmas. We had to stick to surface roads because geriatric going south past 1604. We chose the Menger because of the history surrounding the downtown landmarks. I'm not going to name the room but it was charming even with malfunctioning heat. Next visit cold for spring heat. We had to snuggle hard wink wink on the first visit. Has built in shopping including an estate jewelry business with beautiful ($$$$) pieces. Lobby is charming; courtyard is beautiful and well kept. Not much left to chance with ample staff. Cool old touches like mail slots near the elevators that drop all the way down to the first floor. Obviously cool bar scene because of the many famous people that were patrons. Second visit and this is hilarious I didn't realize NOLA famous Pat O'Briens was literally across the street. Visited that bar several times and until this visit didn't realize it's that close to the Menger until the last visit. We closed Menger Bar for this visit and headed to PO's only to close it down too. Couple of thoughts here and it's typical advice for any property. It's not 5 star (or 3 star) dining so explore the food scene. Number 2 Texas Monthly steakhouse on the River Walk. For breakfast we chose Voodoo Donuts instead of the breakfast buffet. Finally, valet service was excellent. Most folks don't think about it but they instantly suggested sheltered parking because I arrived in a soft top. Big weekend for downtown SA and the Luke Combs concert including our group. Our cars was parked for the evening and I felt safe from weather and foul play. read more

This was one of the worst hotel stays I've had in the past few years. The biggest issue was the air conditioning. We visited during the Texas summer, and the AC in our room barely worked. Despite repeated complaints to the front desk, the only solution offered was a box fan because we were told the AC system was already at full capacity. Sleeping comfortably was nearly impossible. The room itself was poorly maintained and had a stale, musty smell, likely due to poor air circulation. Housekeeping was another major disappointment--we received no daily cleaning during our stay, and the room was never serviced. The hotel's historic location is excellent and is probably its biggest advantage. Unfortunately, the property itself feels very dated and appears to lack the maintenance needed to provide even basic comforts. A functioning air conditioner and regular housekeeping should be standard, especially in a hotel of this reputation. I would not stay here again unless significant improvements are made to the rooms and overall maintenance. read more

Wow, where do I start. When checking in, essentially no information about the property was given at all except where the elevator was. The furnishings, atmosphere and decor in the common areas were much what we expected, very nice. The location is fantastic! Unfortunately, that is where the good news ends. Upon entering the room, there was no information card normally found in hotels. I attempted to call the front desk to ask how to connect to their "Hi-speed Wi-fi" that they advertise. Unfortunately, the room phone was dead, so I walked back to the front desk. The attendant informed me that the internet was down right now, but they were working on it. It was working in the lobby. I also mentioned that the room phone was not working and he said he would send a tech up to repair it. In 4 days, that never happened. The internet never came up either during our entire stay. I went to get some ice in our ice bucket and noticed the liner was so small, I couldn't have even fit my hand in it, so it certainly didn't fit the bucket. Back to the front desk I walked to get a proper liner. They didn't have one, so the attendant brought up ice in the bucket wrapped in plastic wrap. The hotel is very old, so the fact that the walls were "thin" did not surprise me and we slept fairly well in spite of neighborly noise. After walking all day around San Antonio, I was a little surprised to find the room had not been serviced. Service people were working on a room just down the hall, so I asked when ours would be serviced and we would go back out while they were doing that. I was informed that our room was not on the list to be serviced and asked if I had called housekeeping to get on the list. Nothing was mentioned about this at check-in and as I said before, no information card was in the room. Rather difficult to call anyway since the room phone was still broken. So I made another trip to the front desk. I requested service for the next day since it was getting late and was told "Ok". Surprise, no one ever showed up to service the room the next day, I had to go to the front desk to request towels. Perhaps the hauntings just don't like electronic things like internet and phones. Oh, and plastic bags. But I suspect this is a management issue rather than a ghostly one. Be afraid! read more

I was not excited about staying at the Menger bc the last time we had this tiny room that we could barely move in. What a nice surprise when we opened the door and the room was nice and large. Of course we wanted to stay in the historic side and I highly recommend it! We loved the foyer areas plus the courtyard as well. The pool was heated and very enjoyable. So glad the bar allows children before 10:00 pm bc it is an experience in itself. We sat upstairs where we could see the craftsmanship, amazing. My mom and I have come to the Menger Hotel every year for 24 years straight as a mother-daughter getaway. I've seen this hotel over the years through my own life changes and through many management changes. I would give the Menger 5 stars every single year, at any age. It is a classy, comfortable, friendly environment. We love hanging out by the sparkling clean (and very large) pool and ordering the poolside snacks and drinks. Every year I look forward to sitting in the beautiful courtyard area in one of the rocking chairs with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The Menger Bar (original to the 1800s) is the perfect place to end the night. Over the years, the management has done things for us like a free room upgrade to one of their famous suites, surprised us with wine & fruit on arrival, comped our bar tab, and more. The Menger Hotel is great for any occasion - girls trip, couples getaway, family weekend. Not you mention, you'll be walking distance to the River Walk, mall, Alamo, Plaza, and more. If you're considering visiting the Menger, I cannot recommend enough! read more

We called at 11am before check-in to ensure it was clean.. we were greeted with piles of trash outside of our room, awful smell of rotting food and gnats flying everywhere...Our room was filthy, filthy towels and blankets in entry way closet, urine on toilet, long black hair in bathtub, used coffee cups in wet bar. Random fluid crusted stains on every tile. They no longer give drink coupons... don't bother staying here. So many fluid stains everywhere... smelled of urine so bad, I couldn't use other bathroom. Aug 20th my husband & I stayed at the Hotel. I just want to start off by saying this place is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. We wanted Room 2025 (Haunted room) but it wasn't available. So we got another random room, room 2042 thinking we weren't going to get any sort of Spirit activity. But we were wrong. So many awesome things happened that night that we caught on camera & audio. Aside from that, the staff every single person was awesome. From the valet to the desk clerks. But I have to say two people stood out the most One was Eric who was our desk clerk when we first came in. Very cheerful, smiled a lot, talked to us engaged with us and welcomed us. And then the best one of all was Tim the nightclerk. Not only did he take the time to talk to us and play little joke on us, but he gave us some pamphlets that y'all had behind the desk for people who like the haunted spiritual stuff. And we exchanged ghost stories, and he showed us the window that you could hear all the glass tapping. He was absolutely amazing especially for 3/4:00 a.m. lol Even leaving the hotel the desk clerks in the morning there are three of them and I believe one was a manager. We're all very welcoming and awesome. We're definitely going to come back again. read more

First of all, it's old. Vintage for sure. There is charm in that kind of thing. Old wood charm is found everywhere, but I don't think the hotel puts much effort beyond the first floor on that concept. Of course, we can accept with old buildings there are compromises to be made when updating rooms and hallways. It was weird having to step up or down about 8 inches to access the bathroom. The updated (20 years ago?) bathroom featured a sink that prevented one from closing the shower curtain all the way. The hallways are dimly lit with soul stealing bluish LED lighting. It was my idea for me and my husband to stay at the Menger Hotel while we were in San Antonio. I guess I wanted to lean into the whole Alamo thing, as this historical hotel is just around the corner. I enjoyed my stay. My partner had some issues with the room's shower and some of the hotel amenities like the gym not being comparable to a contemporary hotel... but I thought it was fine. What you give up with modernity, you gain with uniqueness and character. I liked the architecture, the history displays and suites known for where famous guest stayed, its ghostlore, and the Menger Bar. It's also close to the Riverwalk and the area around is very walkable. read more

Incredibly beautiful hotel. Very different than most modern chain hotels. Great location too. We want two things when we stay in a hotel: it's got to be clean and quiet. We checked into a small but adequate king bed room the other day. It was nice and clean. The hotel itself is really beautiful, staff were great too. Being a bit older than we look, we like a nap in the afternoon. We tried at about 3:00. Unfortunately someone was talking really loudly and we could hear doors slamming. After about 20 minutes we gave up and got up to wander around San Antonio. When we get out in the hall we found one of the cleaning staff walking around, talking at the top of her lungs. Her walkie-talkie type radio was the highest volume setting possible too. That was a surprise. There are plenty of rude guests who yell and scream in the hallways, disappointing that a staff member could be so inconsiderate. The other thing that we didn't like was how cold the room was and how we couldn't control the temperature (see one of the pics). The entrance light in the room didn't work and it was a pretty dark room in general. We did like the decent LG TV which allowed us to log onto our Netflix account and watch our own content. Glad we had an opportunity to see this cool place, but we won't stay there again. I'd have probably rated it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

What a magnificent intriguing hotel located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, basically on Alamo Square or Plaza. Apparently The Menger Hotel is haunted!!! Built in 1859 and is right next door to The Alamo. It is absolutely gorgeous with marble floors, 19th century architecture and numerous antiques. Jaw dropping. It's had many many famous guests from movie stars to presidents. It's listed on the hotel historic register. Cool spot!! read more

Avoid the Thanksgiving buffet and save your money unless you enjoy cold overpriced nursing home food. It was literally the WORST Thanksgiving meal I have ever had! If you must go, then use your $99 per person price at the salad bar and breakfast station. Some desserts were ok. The bread pudding was the highlight. read more

Old Properties like this go through a lot of ups and downs. Some good, some challenging. I'm happy to report the Historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio is alive and well. We have all been in those old hotels that are barely hanging on. The smell of grandma's house,uncomfortable beds...etc. Not here. South Texas has many historic hotels worthy of your patronage including this lovely lodging. This is the whole enchilada including, restaurants,gift shops and right in walking distance of everything you want to see and do in downtown San Antonio. This is a no brainier... Go! read more

One of the most unique and enjoyable hotels I have stayed. Rooms cozy yet large enough to move around comfortanly. Beds super comfortable. Very quiet. Lovely lobby in which to relax and visit. The Menger is close to everything. The Alamo is right next door, many restaurants of various prices nearby. The river walk is maybe 5 minutes away and the stuff is amazing. I had the pleasure of staying at the Menger for a work conference. I had special circumstances that made this a great spot such as not pay for parking as we took advantage of rideshare. However, there is valet parking and note that there's road construction, so access to the valet is on Bonham (something to notify your rideshare driver as well). The hotel itself is a bit of a maze, took me a second to find the quickest path to my room. My room was clean. The bed may be one of the most comfortable beds I've been on, or maybe I've just been exhausted. The pillows are more comfortable than the ones I have on my bed. I love that my room had a fridge, not many hotels have them in rooms anymore, so I appreciated being able to keep my complimentary waters cold. As far as noise level, either my neighboring rooms were quiet or the only noise I truly heard was the flushing of their toilets each time they went to the bathroom. Due to being at the Menger for a conference, we were offered vouchers for the breakfast and lunch buffet. Staff at breakfast were hospitable and quick to clear tables. Day one breakfast was sausage, bacon, biscuits, potatoes, fresh fruit & more. Our day one lunch was fantastic! We had salmon, chicken, rice pilaf, mashed potatoes, baked potato soup, a dessert assortment, and a salad bar. Everything was hot and fresh! I'm honestly going to have to find the recipe for their salmon/chicken because it was that delicious. The conference rooms were spacious with access to a bathroom. The pool was closed until the end of the month. They have a nice sitting area with rocking chairs in the plaza, a perfect spot to sit when you need some sunshine after sitting in the chilly conference room for hours. The bar is a nice little spot with two seating areas. My favorite part about this hotel is its location near the mall which it's nearly attached to and there is quite a bit of attractions (including the Alamo) & restaurants nearby. It also has a few stores located inside, I haven't had a chance to check them out yet, but my first stop will be Sister's Grimm (where they offer ghost tours, which the hotel is one of their stops ‍) read more

Immersed in history... The Dental Corps picked this place for the site of their 112th Anniversary celebration. It was not a bad choice at all. The hotel is a living museum that served as a marvelous hosts tour event, themed past, present and future. The staff at the valet and the check-in were friendly and courteous. The food at the event was very good. I ordered the ribeye steak , which came with asparagus and potatoes. The wine was good. The bar was generous. The crowd inside and external to the event was friendly. The Menger staff was super accommodating in support of this event. As far as accommodations, it was fine. Our room was small, but clean and sufficient. Our room had the usual hotel amenities (soaps, shampoos, towels, etc.). It had a nice LED TV and a fridge. The room had a walk-in closet. If all you need is a place to crash, the rooms at the Menger fit the bill. Things to do: The Menger Bar is worth a visit. The bartenders are capable and the drinks well prepped. They have an in-house taqueria - Mengerita Tacos that is also worth a stopover. The people hanging out around the pool looked like they were relaxing as well. The key difference between the Menger and the other downtown hotels is its history. If you can appreciate its design, artifacts, (the chance for ghosts), proximity to the Alamo and the Riverwalk... it's a great place to spend time in. I'm happy to have stayed there. Staying at the Menger is a once in a life time experience. Definitely worth a try. read more
