Menya Hosaki has been on my list for almost a year now, however I always heard it was difficult to get a table so it's veered me away from trying it. However, I just happened to be in DC on a Wednesday evening after work, and decided to stop by. Best spontaneous decision I have ever made! I put my name down, and walked around the block for maybe 10-15 mins max. We were then called inside for a table. So really the wait was not bad at all. The broth was incredible and truly unlike any other broth I have had. So deep in flavor and the perfect amount of heat/spice. The chashu pork was so tender yet perfectly browned on the outside. If i was being hyper-critical, I would say that I wish the noodles were a bit bouncier. But that's just a person preference. But honestly this is my new favorite ramen place. Very small menu and very small place We got the fried chicken katsu which was good I got the spicy ramen which was bland.i didn't like the broth much The bigger issue for me here was the service. Me and one friend and we were waiting for the third but they would not seat us so we were just standing in a tiny hall. The hostess even asked us if we were ok, as though she didn't know she was making us wait for a table until our other friend arrived. And when the other friend arrived then they sat us all down. Unfortunately it became closer to their closing time and then they started to rush us keeping the floors and making it painfully obvious that they wanted us to get out. I think the combination would have been avoided had they just sat us down in the first place so we could have at least ordered the chicken to start with. Wanted to try this ramen spot out since there's been a lot of hype around this lately. Went here somewhat early on a Friday night to try and get a table for my friends and I. We arrived at 6PM, put our names down for a table of 4 and got seated around 8PM. The Food: Went with the Spicy Tonkatsu as my main and the Chicken Karaage as a appetizer. The ramen was pretty good. Broth was very flavorful and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The chashu pork wasn't as "melt in your mouth" as I expected, but it was still tasteful! the bowl overall was pretty good but the main thing that caught my attention was surprisingly the chicken karaage. The karaage was fried so nicely. Not oily, the batter was crisp just right and the chicken pieces were thick! Honestly the star of the show in my opinion. The Service: Service was great! Staff were pretty attentive all around. The only downside really was the wait times. The Atmosphere: [[HIGHLIGHT]]Small space with an average amount of seating inside. I'd come back just for the karaage. The pieces were massive, well-seasoned, and juicy. The yuzu mayo was also phenomenal, like I could drink that sauce through a straw. The ramen was really good too! The best I've had in the DMV so far, but not the best I've had in general. I got the sunset shoyu and got to try a bit of the spicy tonkotsu. The broth is rich and the noodles were springy, but the pork served on top of each of the bowls was my favorite part. They were so smoky and tender, I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. If you're going to go here, I'd highly recommend getting there like 10 minutes before they open. I got there 5 minutes before they opened for dinner and ended up getting a table around 6:20 PM. On my search for the best ramen in the DMV, this place consistently tops people's list. For ramen we got the Triple Threat (a combination of all three broths) and the Spicy Tonkotsu. Right off the bat you can tell the ingredients they use are super fresh and high quality. The noodles were al dente, pork was flavorful and smoky and the egg had the perfect runny/jammy center. The broths were just ok the and were not my favorite. I was personally not huge on the smoky dashi broth as I felt it overpowered everything. I think this is a pretty good bowl of ramen but if you factor in the inconvenience/wait to try and eat here, I would say it's a bit overhyped and only worth coming once. I've lived just around the corner from Menya Hozaki for three years and today was the first time I went. Why? They're closed weekends and their dinner hours are limited. Me and one friend ordered the classic tonkotsu ramen. The broth was phenomenal. The rest of it was so-so. I was surprised there were zero other toppings beyond a soft boiled egg and one bamboo shoot. The pork was fatty and I like lean meat (I recognize that is typically the style for ramen and I am the exception in not enjoying it so don't hold that against them but do want other folks who see this review to know before ordering). This is probably the most hyped ramen place I've heard in DC. Upon arriving, I was told there would be a 80 minute wait on a Wednesday evening. We arrived at this restaurant right on 5pm only to find the wait would be 2.5-3 hours. Sadly we did not get seated until 8:30 PM. You might get lucky with no wait, but be prepared just in case. The menu is very limited (pretty much just chicken karrage and ramen), so please consider when dining. We started with the chicken karaage (4/5), which came out burn-your-mouth hot and very fresh. Some pieces were very large, too big to eat in one bite, which was my only critique. The yuzu dipping mayo was excellent however. What we tried: Classic Tonkotsu (5/5): Outstanding. Not heavy at all, perfectly firm noodles, amazing chashu, and a perfectly cooked egg. My only desire was for more bamboo shoots. Classic Shoyu (5/5): A very clean, flavorful broth with the same tasty firm noodles and perfect chashu and seaweed. Spicy Vegetarian (Veg Tantan-4/5): Mildly rich with just the right level of spice. The toppings were excellent, but the thicker noodles weren't my favorite. If the almond-milk ramen broth used a different noodle, I think I would've enjoyed it more. Overall, I definitely preferred the tonkotsu and shoyu over the vegetarian option, mainly due to the noodles and overall flavor. Such a popular place and you will immediately see why once you take your first sip of their incredible broth and ramen. The place itself is not huge, I went in on a Friday night and was able to get a seat at the bar. While I do wish that they had some more appetizer options, it also made it easier for me to know what exactly to get. I highly recommend the chicken karaage to start, it was nice and crisp and didn't have too many overpowering flavors. Left room for their yuzu mayo on the side. It's a big portion so definitely shareable. For the ramen bowl, I got the spicy tonkatsu. It's really hard to find a good bowl of ramen that has everything you want - tender meat, spicy broth, flavorful broth, and good toppings. This bowl had it all. I opted for extra noodles and then had too much for myself, but it was so worth it. This is one of the best bowls of ramen I've had and I've had a lot of ramen. The staff is super friendly, super attentive and the perk here is that you can order everything from a QR code. This is super easy for solo diners, couples or friend groups who want to order as you go. The service is fast, but also very intentional. They space out your meal just right. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon. My review is only of their Tuesday lunch, which was comprised of red snapper broth. When we first got here, there was already a line and we had to wait 1.5 hours. We decided to wait since we made a special trip out here just for their ramen, after hearing rave reviews. The ramen was good, but I wouldn't say it was the best I've had. We came in on a dreary day, and decided to sit up at the bar, which was a great way to see the preparation of the ramen. We ordered: +Karaage - served with yuzu mayo; the yuzu mayo was a great dipping sauce, but I found the super large chicken 'bites' way too big, and I like them more well-done; however; the flavor and the yuzu mayo is yummy +Spicy Tonkatsu ramen - with housemade chili spice in a pork paitan soup; the char siu was the highlight, as it was caramelized perfectly and had amazing flavor; the hubs really enjoyed the creamy broth as well +and, a Sunset Shoyu ramen - with housemade chili spice in a clear chicken- and dashi-based soup; this was soothing, and I recommend in asking for extra chili oil Don't sleep on the menma; we usually aren't fans of this, as it's usually ghetto versions at other ramen places; here, they import straight from Japan, and it's probably one of the best and only menma we'll eat! We've been eating at Menya Hosaki since the early days, back when they were doing pop-ups inside Junction Deli in what felt like a tiny office food court. At the time, we weren't sure what to expect. A small ramen setup inside a deli claiming to serve legit ramen? It sounded bold. And then we tasted it. Hands down, some of the best ramen I've ever had. The depth of flavor, the balance, the passion in every bowl -- it was obvious from the start that this wasn't just another ramen spot. I've eaten ramen all across Japan -- Okinawa, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo -- from Michelin-starred restaurants to tiny hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop shops. It's a bit deep into Washington but well worth the commute! The service was great we were able to put our name on the list and then explore the surrounding neighborhood and other restaurants along the strip! Once we were seated we had a great time! In every city, I try to find their best croissant, ramen and speakeasy. Menya hosaki is DC's tribute to ramen. The best food is often found in tiny spaces as there is something about cozying up to a bowl of hot ramen in a bustling joint that adds to the experience. It is in this little shop that I found one of the best ramen that I've had. I got their spicy tonkotsu and it delivered with its intense, buttery, sticky-lipped rich broth of a masterpiece. The best tonkotsu strikes a balance between its creaminess and its fatty mouth feel and I loved that broth so much I wish it was my child. The noodles are perfectly springly and the eggs gooey. I go for the bowl in spoon approach when enjoying my ramen and having the soup, noodles, chashu, egg and bamboo shoots in a single bite was worth the 30 mins wait. Definitely check it out. The hype here is 100% justified. Menya Hosaki serves the greatest bowl of ramen I've had anywhere. The broth is rich and velvety; aromas leap out of the bowl without ever turning harsh or over-assertive. They offer an immaculate dashi, a remarkably flavorful chicken broth that surprised me with how deep and clean it tastes, an S-tier tonkotsu, and a bowl that blends all three: an idea that sounds like it shouldn't work, yet absolutely does. Many parties came in while we were eating and were quoted wait times of 30-45 mins. We were seated quickly and ordered the chicken bites, the triple threat and the tonkatsu. The karage was reminiscent of a traditional chicken Karage and the yuzu Mayo was a great condiment. Tonkastu was pretty rich and heavy with intense porky goodness while triple threat was lighter and flavorful with datshi as the primary highlighting flavor. In all their ramens, the same ingredients - noodles, bamboo shoot and pork were extremely high quality. You can see the love and dedication they put into each ingredient. Very deliberate choice of ingredients. I like that they don't load their ramen with a ton of toppings. I understand why some reviewers lower their ratings because of wait, or limited menu, their hours or whatever, but me, personally, as a person who appreciates noodles and a menu that does not have 100 items - this place is absolutely amazing and gets a FIVE out of five. Due to the popularity of the restaurant, I recommend coming early and make sure that if you come with a group, everyone in your party is there. The tonkotsu broth is authentic. I've been wanting to try Menya Hosaki's ramen for years now, so I was glad to meet up with a friend for one of their Tokusei Tuesdays and give them a go. I arrived at 10:35 am and the line was already down the block. We were able to put our number down at 11:30-ish and were quoted a 1 hour and 15 minute wait from then. We were seated 1 hour and 45 minutes later and then got our food about 1:45 pm. Was the ramen good? Yes, it was very tasty! Was it mind-blowing or significantly better than other ramen? No, and for over 3 hours of waiting and a $24 price tag, it needed to be. I wouldn't line up again, and I can't fully understand why someone else would either, but I'm glad to have tried it once. I would consider giving their dinner a go without the waiting time. All in all, if one of their specials really, truly speaks to you and you plan to get there at 10 am and wait for the hour so you can be in the first group seated, I could see that being worth it. I don't think I have it in me, but I'm glad they're so successful and I'm glad to have given them a try! Finally got to try the 'best ramen in the DMV!' We arrived on a weekday around 4:50 PM, and there was already a line forming. If you want to avoid waiting for hours, I highly recommend coming before opening time. The place is small and cozy with limited seating, so plan accordingly! As for the food, the karage was crispy and delicious. It's pretty rare for the karage to not have to rely on some sort of sauce. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu ramen, which I'd rate 3.5/5. It started out great, but the spice eventually overpowered the flavor. I think I'd prefer the regular tonkatsu next time. However, the noodles had the best texture of any ramen I've tried in this area. Definitely worth 5 stars for the atmosphere and the quality of the dishes. read more

Menya Hosaki has delicious ramen and is worth a journey up to Petworth. They usually do dinner only, but offer a special ramen for Tuesday lunch, which changes every week. Get there early! We showed up about fifteen minutes before opening and a long line had formed already. On Tuesday, they only make one ramen, so there isn't much to ponder; put your faith in the chef and you will be rewarded with a warm and comforting bowl of noodles. It's an amazing place. Personally, this is the best ramen in the DMV area. My buddies always wanted to take me out to try this as Menya has much acclaim behind it. That said be prepared as most likely you'll be in for a wait as this is a very popular spot. The four of us waited for over an hour and a half on a Friday evening, till our group was finally called. Once inside the ambient was lively and inviting. Walking in I could see the kitchen team working hard as they were preparing ramen for the hungry patrons! Once seated the service was excellent. We started with Karaage for the table which came out to be in larger servings than we were anticipating! (No complaints there!) The Karaage was fresh, crispy, piping hot, and tasty! For the main course. I decided to go for the Spicy Tonkotsu as I was looking for a little kick for dinner. The moment the main course arrived i could tell that it would be good, but after the first tasting of the ramen, I was floored! The richness of the broth, the incredible textured of the ramen, and the Chashu.......unreal! I pretty much ate in silence just savoring each bite. Arrived at 1pm on a Tuesday. After 40min ride from union station with anticipation in crescendo thanks to reviews and photos, I opened the door and waited in line... Ineffably disappointed and hangry AF after an hour and a half of my day wasted traveling here and now back only for 'sorry sir, we're sold out for the day' ugh - bummer. This was my first time trying Menya Hosaki and I see why it's a fan favorite. First of all, they don't take reservations and the tables fill up super fast after opening, we waited about 30 mins for our table which isn't too bad but definitely plan to be early and wait if going at a popular time. We split the karaage which was delightfully crispy and hot out the fryer. The spicy tonkatsu was not spicy and lacked depth to me. The broth was just ok but the chashu was delicious. I would take a couple orders of that. I'm still curious about the truffle shoyu and the Tuesday surprise menus so maaaaaybe I'll be back but I don't think it would be worth the wait again for me. Unfortunately really disappointing ramen. I had heard that this place was good but came hesitantly because my brother said it wasn't good and I have to agree. Far from the best ramen in DC. I ordered the sunset shoyu. It didn't taste spicy and had a very light flavor. It wasn't offensive but to me, the whole meal leaned more on the bland side. read more

Totally worth the hype! You can't make reservations and the place is always busy to expect to put your name down and then wait a bit for you table. We waited like 45mins for our table, which was totally cool with us as the food is worth it and there's bars in the area to go and hang out in while you wait. The staff is lovely and the food comes out very quickly! It's a smaller menu but you can't really go wrong with anything you get. The Karaage is the only app they have so definitely start with that! Otherwise the Tantan is my fav ramen to order. If you get extra noodles (for like $4) it essentially doubles your meal; I had the rest of mine later that night and it was still perfect. Great local spot that serves really quality ramen! read more
