Wow what a cool experience! Ended up here on a random Saturday afternoon because we were craving a sweet treat and my husband loves churros which led us to try El Moro Churrería. One step inside this massive market and we knew we had to check it out and explore every corner. It's the most warm and inviting place, designed with bright colorful artwork and great music playing throughout. It's also kept very clean and organized. We spent nearly 3 hours checking out every section, from cowboy hats and handmade leather sandals, to Mexican candy, artisan soaps and candles, paletas and ice cream, an Aguas Frescas bar, and a wide variety of food court-style restaurants. After picking up some produce, snacks, and a few baked goods from the Pastelaría, we discovered the full bar and patio and decided it was time to treat ourselves with a couple of margaritas from the bar. Who knew grocery shopping could be so fun? (Pro tip: Their carts have cupholders, so you can get your margs or cocktail first and then roam around and do your shopping.) I highly recommend checking out this market... but make sure to allow yourself some extra time to wander around if it's your first time. read more

In fact...I think I may move in here! Because of the size of the outside shopping center, there is substantial parking. How far you have to walk to the Mercado will depend on time of day and if you are going on a weekend. Upon entering you are thrust into a celebration full of Mexican puestos. It feels like you are on a guided tour vacation! I recommend taking a quick lap through before choosing...there is only so much space in your tummy! Coming here with a bunch of friends is recommended. It will allow you to try as much as you can, without committing too much stomach space. And you will need the space. It's my first time visiting this market! I live pretty far from this market but omg I was super excited to check it out!!! I went to Mexico City back in March and I've learned about what food is good. OMG their churro shop here is so authentic!!!! Apparently it's a chain store from Mexico!!! Their bakery shop inside the Market is also super amazing! It has the better quality type of pastries. It's very delicious!! I also got their chipotle grilled whole chicken and guacamole. Both are super delicious!!! I honestly feel like the ambiance made me feel like I just went to Mexico again!! I love this market so much!!! The people that works here also are all very friendly! A friend suggested coming here after a day at the beach, boy oh boy I wish I knew about this before going to the beach! After visiting nearby South Coast Plaza, I came to check out this market. A weekday afternoon is the best time to come because it wasn't very crowded and it wasn't hard to find parking in the large lot which is shared by many stores. This place is so festive, colorful, and impressive for both Mexican grocery shopping and Mexican foods/specialties/treats at the food vendor stalls. You will find a wide variety of items including breads, pastries, cakes, agua frescas, cheeses, salsas, guacamole, fresh tortillas, tamales, birria, tacos, ceviche, paletas, churros, etc. You definitely need to make several visits to try everything! Besides food, the store also has a great selection of other Mexican non-food items. It is definitely an interesting place to explore and is a must visit destination! read more

Not only are there fantastic Mexican groceries and made food items but layout of the market itself is quite fun with many little eateries inside including taco joints, a churros shop, and a bakery. I love grocery stores and enjoy checking out new local spots when I have the time. I never knew about this mega store, but glad it found me when wifey & I were exploring next-door at Homegoods TJ Max. Mercado Gonzalez is an amazing place and can't recall seeing a grocery store that compares. It's gigantic & spacious. It's very clean & organized. And every team member we engaged with were so nice & friendly. When entering the store, you can't help but notice 1000's of all types of tortillas being handmade and prepared by a team of people. I've never seen anything like this. It's like a mini factory. They're working so hard here and there seems to be an abundance of fresh warm tortillas at all times. Not sure if it's all day & night, but that's what I saw. There's a Food Court that expands throughout the entire store like a shopping mall. There's a full bar lounge that has some flatscreen TV's playing sports. There's also a fairly large outdoor patio connected. They have every type of Mexican & Latin food you can imagine...and there's even a sushi bar/counter, with fresh oysters too. There's a butcher counter/display case that's nearly a 1/2 a block long. The fresh fish counter is not nearly as large, but they have nearly every type of fish & seafood you can think of. Didn't inspect too much of their produce, but the Cherries were bright red and looked really good. There's a bakery department and was lucky to be there while they were passing out free samples. I forget what it's called...but it was really soft fresh bread/flat roll, with jalapeño cream cheese in the middle. It wasn't too spicy. It was delicious. Wifey agreed with me. There was so much to choose from inside this place, it was slightly overwhelming trying to figure out what to get. But since we love a good tamale, that's what we narrowed it down to at the tamale section station. There's every type you can think of, but we both chose to keep it simple with the (chicken) pollo to take home for part of our dinner. Their tamales are BIG & hefty and they don't skip on the pollo. The masa corn was very good and moist. Single tamales are only $2.99/ea. Will definitely be back in the future for more and to sample some others. And if that's not enough? There's a section with 3 people doing nothing but cutting up huge avocados, prepping & making fresh guacamole on the spot. I've never seen so many avocados and fresh guac in one place. Wholly guacamole factory. Forgive me for not taking photos but was enjoying myself so much I refrained from removing my iPhone from my pocket. But if you're still reading and curious? Heaven! Honestly why aren't ALL Northgates like this. I love all of the food stands. I felt like a kid in a candy shop until I saw they had a little area with all sorts of Mexican candies and then I just died! There so much to take in and discover there! They have so many different stands to eat at, a few bars, an ice cream shop and who can forget the famous El Morro churreria from Mexico City. The churros were so good! They're not super sweet like amusement park churros. I got the French hot chocolate which is thicker and not as sweet at regular hot chocolate. I was 'wowed' the second I stepped into Mercado! So much to see and take in! The colors are vibrant, the variety is plentiful, and vibes are fantástico! I especially loved the churros from El Moro. Wow, so delicious! They are made fresh, and you can taste the quality! These really are a 10 and make Disneyland churros a 5 because those are frozen and taste highly processed and just not as good. I got the combo and chose the Mexican hot chocolate, but that was way too thick and rich for me. We couldn't finish it, so I won't get that again. We also tried the torta, burrito, and cheese quesadilla from Tacos Los Güichos which were fine. I like the salsa bar complete with sliced radishes, limes, onions, and three kinds of salsas. They had a bakery section that smelled divine. They had fruit tarts, chocoflans, conchas, chips, salsas, fresh-made tortillas, produce, regular groceries, a food court, frescas, etc. I could spend a long time in there, lots to look at. There is also a patio section with more tables. Everyone was friendly, and there was live music from a traditional band on Sunday night. They even had fresh ice cream bars that I want to try next time, with my churros, of course! What is going on?? I'm so sad to put three stars but I have to be as authentic as possible. There used to be more quality food! Now it's all for the "gram". Honestly, the three stars are for the wonderful employees and workers. Always kind and friendly; you can always count on Latino people for their warm hospitality for the most. The food tastes very low quality now . And the drinks are unbearably sugary. Like come on! So many people have high sugar levels and these feel like they might put you on a diabetic coma. As a Mexican American who is well acquainted with authentic Mexican food from various states it feels a bit sacrilegious to eat low quality food. In terms of presentation, yes very cute and quaint. Mercado Gonzalez is not your typical market, it's a whole experience. I felt like I was at Disneyland when I visited haha. I really had a lot of fun and was happy to find a market that offered so many amazing things! First of all, as a market, it's wonderful. They have so many options for fresh produce, meat, fish, and anything else you may need when going grocery shopping. What makes this market so special, is that they have so many food spots inside to choose from. I chose to get some ceviche from Mariscos El Pariente and it did not disappoint. It was excellent! They also have aguas frescas and I chose the nanche and coconut. They were both really good but the coconut one was my favorite. It was flavorful, refreshing and had little pieces of coconut. It had just the right amount of sweetness. Inside, there are many tables where you can sit and enjoy your food. They also have an outside seating area. Other than the groceries and food spots, they also sell so much more. They sell gorgeous flower arrangements, boots, huaraches, candles, Mexican candy, plates, cups, and more. Their products are so cute and unique. I loved their candles such as their pan dulce candle! Everyone working there was very nice and the market is clean and organized. I love coming to this place whenever I'm in the area. This is a supermarket with lots of food stalls inside. It is absolutely huge inside. There are lots of tables to grab your food and find a spot to eat. Service was very friendly inside. If you do come here to shop, everything is laid out neatly and easy to find. Review is for los mesquites asados. I really wanted to like this place, but the experience was disappointing from start to finish. After ordering, it took nearly an hour for our food to come out, and during that time the staff seemed completely unattentive and showed little sense of urgency. At one point, a cashier looked directly at the long line of waiting customers, took off her apron, and walked away -- which pretty much summed up the lack of management presence. We ordered the "La Familia" platter, advertised as serving 3-4 people, but the portions were shockingly small. There were only enough tortillas for about one and a half tacos per person, and the chorizo looked roughly hacked up rather than properly prepared. For $50, the value just wasn't there. To make matters worse, we went back to ask for extra onions and cilantro just to add some substance to the meal, and that took another 15 minutes. Between the long wait, misleading platter size, and overall disorganization, the experience felt borderline like false advertising. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this restaurant based on this visit. I hope they improve their portion accuracy, staffing, and overall service because right now it falls far short of expectations. read more

This Mercado was referred to us by a friend. I now see the hype. This has something for everyone. Plus it has its own restaurant if that's what you choose, but definitely not needed. Love the vide and the outside patio. Very clean and the staff is very helpful. I enjoyed the many sample opportunities. The churros are a hit. Definitely return to try something different. My only very small complaint was the Cadillac Margarita could have been better but it made up for it with the generous amount of tequila Also, their rajas con queso tamales would be to my liking if made with roasted pasilla chiles instead of jalapeños.... Absolutely love walking around and exploring all the different vendors and products at this large market! So much to taste, see, and smell! The ambiance is super fun, vibrant, and casual, and service from the tamale shop and churro shop were both friendly and helpful. We tried the pork tamale and beef tamale and both were sooo good! They were flavorful and spicy, so it was hard to pick a favorite. I would recommend trying both unless you clearly favor one protein over the other. Didn't get a chance to try the agua fresca stand, but love that there's such a wide variety of options as well as a large selection of Mexican soda too. The churros are a must here! Currently there is a seasonal gingerbread one but we opted for the classic cinnamon with chocolate dipping sauce and it definitely hit the spot. On our way out, we also picked up some incredibly soft feeling tortillas that smell amazing. Can't wait to try making tacos at home! I LOVE this market. I'm obsessed. I've never seen anything like it. You want an amazing Mexican grocery store, coupled with a bar, restaurant, music, hangout, all different types of Mexican specialties and cuisines, it's just out of this world. On top of that, everything looks clean, organized, the food they make there is all very good quality and not greasy, prices are more than fair for what you get. They have a stand for birria, one for ceviche, one for burritos and tacos, another for hot dogs. They have other sections that is a whole panaderia/bakery and across from that, is a station that makes churros and hot chocolate! They have individual stations for EVERYTHING: Queso stand, fish market, salsas, guacamole, ice cream station, one that makes fresh juices, one that serves fruit. There's a stand with all these dried chilis and spices. They actually have a bar as well with happy hour, serving all kinds of tequila and mezcal, and I believe on weekends, they are playing music here also. They sell flowers, they have their own hand made shoes and bags, they have beautifully painted kitchen stuff and chachkies like vases and decor, they make their own tortillas and bread. It's literally a party and a whole vibe in here. It's busy as hell, so just be prepared for that. This isn't your low-key grocery store. You won't regret it. People were coming and going with a bracelet for hours while others stood idling on the side hoping to get in. People came and cut in line it was completely unacceptable and disappointing. This place was executed so well! The decor of the entire market is perfect, I love all the art and stands throughout the market. In terms of food there is something for anyone. I love that they have a bar and plenty of seating both indoors and out. I would totally go again and even recommended it to people. Overall, a really incredible experience. Walking in, we all felt like we were transported to the markets in Mexico City, and the smells of the bakery, spices, and delicious foods were a taste sensation. Do not come here on a Saturday at lunch time. What was I thinking? I had avoided coming since it opened but was curious so when a friend visiting OC said she wanted to go we went. The parking lot was so busy and it took a while to find a spot. Once you get inside you'll be overcome by how crowded and loud it is. It's a true nightmare for anyone with sensory processing issues because there's 80 types of different music playing all at one, there are random women with microhpones and speakers doing food demos or handing out samples. There are kids watching cartoons on iPhones and ipads with the volume up on their devices. Then you have someone randomlly shouting like they are being stabbed to death in a corner but what's actually happening is that they're shouting out people's names or numbers when their food is ready. If you decided to brave a line get ready for people to have zero spatial awareness. The lady standing next to me kept hip bumping me like we were in a 70's disco dance video and my friend almost had her eye poked out by another woman pointing at something with zero regard for other people's eyeballs. It's A LOT of chaos and can be overload for some of us. If this is your vibe, then run don't walk to the Mercado Gonzalez. Another perplexing phenomenon here is that the food is overpriced and the lines and wait times are super long. I'm not sure why we are all coming here when we can literally drive 2 blocks away in any direction and get the same, if not better food for half the price. If you're looking for recommendations try Tacos Madre on Harbor or Taco Mesa on 19th. Maybe someone has to tell me what I'm missing and what the draw of this place is. read more

Mercado Gonzalez is a feast for all senses! Decided to make a totally spontaneous visit one recent Sunday afternoon. Being that we live about 45 minutes away (on a good traffic day), we had to take travel time into consideration as we would need to take four freeways...the 710 to the 5 to the 605 to the 405...luckily, the traffic situation cooperated and we made the trip in a reasonable amount of time. The Mercado is actually a food/retail area attached to Northgate Market. Once you enter the building, you'll be transported to a bustling and exciting world. The actual Northgate market area is "within" the Mercado. I'm used to seeing a distinct separation between the two but here, the lines are blurred in a good way! You can even pay for some Mercado items at Northgate which makes it very easy and convenient. In the day we visited, we already knew that we wanted to get some aguachiles. After perusing the various counters, we finally found the aguachiles! It had been a long time since I had really good aguachiles so I was so excited. It was just a few minutes wait until we placed our order with the very friendly staff. Also purchased some tostadas and off we went! Yum yum yum! Currently $12.99 per pound for this fabulous dish. It's nice that you can purchase a small amount at a time if you want so you can try the various options. We also opted for some octopus ceviche for good measure! After enjoying our seafood outside, we decided to try the churros since they are made fresh to order. Yum yum yum! Nothing like a fresh, warm, crispy churro! Just the perfect amount of cinnamon sugar too. They also offer dipping sauces: chocolate, caramel and condensed milk. These were good "extras" but IMO the churros are just fine on their own. You know we had to wash these down with a steaming cup of Cafe de olla. This is my 2nd time having it and I really enjoyed the unique flavor...something different from a usual cup of drip coffee. Before leaving, we decided to get some to-go items for dinner. We settled upon more aguachiles(!!!), grilled chicken, agua fresca (so many flavors that I couldn't decide so I got two: strawberries and cream (Yummm x1000!!) and jamaica. Both were outstanding and the staff were so friendly and accommodating. We also got a big bag of tortilla chips (the crispiest/crunchiest chips I've ever had) as well as fresh salsa and guacamole to go with our chicken dinner. Can't forget the slice of tres leches cake for dessert! By the time we left, with our arms full of yumz, it was already 4pm. Did we really spend 2-3 hours in the Mercado? Time does file when you're having fun... Although it is a sorta long drive, we hope to be back very often. Not only because of the various vendors but also because of the outgoing and friendly staff. We were offered samples of various items and each team member we encountered was enthusiastic and genuine. It may be a small detail to some, but I definitely noticed and appreciated this most excellent customer service. It's a good and bad thing that this place is far away. Vibrant & wonderful food heaven! This place has groceries, fresh produce, housewares, flowers, many food stalls that offer a variety of specialties from tamales to tacos to aqua Fresca. They also have desserts including bakery with cakes & many baked goodies, Flans, and churros. There is also a bar and a large dining area with many tables. Live & festive music on the evening we were there (on a Thursday). Ample free parking in the open lot. Everything is very reasonably priced and the place is very clean. read more

Like - WHAT?!?! Best kept secret in the OC. This place is AMAZING!!! (For those east-coasters - it's like Wegmans, but Mexican food and products!). Disney-level themed murals, live music, and sooo many choices of fresh food from clean, open kitchens. Hubby and I had lunch here (tamales, rice, beans, horchata and a churro) for under $21. Yup. That's right. Yes, we don't eat a lot, but we left full and happy with a bag of fresh (and I mean still warm!!!!) corn tortillas to snack on in the car that only cost $2.50. I guess I should mention we had a few free samples of quesadilla, cornbread and fresh cheese. Did I mention that churro was $3??? A fresh churro for $3??? (Pro tip: skip the line all the negative reviews whine about and use their online order option. Ready in 3 minutes!!!) We will be back quite soon! read more
